I'm not a teacher but I do have an adhd son who really never goes passed a tier 1 behavior (mostly stimming) has a new teacher who is just not equipped with any strategies like this. The few videos I've watched have been very helpful amd I'm bringing them to my meeting with staff to help me explain what I see as the breakdown in the class (basically my kid cam breath and get sent to the office, their is not strategies in place in the classroom other than you made a noise you're rude go to the office) which as an adhder my kid can't help. He doesn't even know he's making noise sometimes. So thank you for these videos. My hopes aren't high but at least I have something to bring to the table today.

I do hope you aren't just being defensive because it's your child. The teacher has an obligation to ensure all kids are learning, not just your son. Your son has to learn to work in an environment with others in a way that benefits him and the whole class, not just him alone.

It would be helpful to hear how you would address the kid who just cursed at you.

When the cursing is directed toward you, it's clearly an issue of disrespect. In the moment, if he/she has an audience, I may sternly say; "stop" or "not OK", then turn away. I'd detain the kid after class or in another area and have a conversation. In other words, hold them accountable without starting a power struggle when they are escalated. If there is no audience, I say and do the same, give them a minute and address it without escalation. It's hard, but I've found that when I can stay cool, it sends a bit of coolness message back to them, they unfortunately don't have the capacity to do this without help because they're not adults. Hope that helps.

I would send that angry kid to the office to cool down. Bad choice?

Yes it’s a bad choice it’s showing the whole class you can’t control the student
