Do I need a Box Spring? - Bunkie Board vs Box Spring

In this video, I explain whether or not you need a box spring or a bunkie board (or neither). Sometimes It can be very confusing to determine if you need anything -- but you have to put SOMETHING on your bed frame, right? You can't just put your mattress directly on those 3 or 4 crossbars, right? So what do you put your mattress on? How does a box spring or bunkie board fit in? Do I need a box spring for a bed in a box?
Here are 3 examples of Bunkie Boards:
Zinus "Gulzar" Bunkie Board: amzn.to/2sZXPl4
Zinus "Deepak" Wood Bunkie Board: amzn.to/2HMIA9j

Here are 3 examples of Box Springs:

Seriously, I've been watching so many videos and none of them helped me. I just bought a bed that has a frame built-in, then I bought a King size ghost bed flex with the foundation. It's so high that my sheets don't cover the foundation. I felt like something was wrong because it looks weird. Now I know that I don't need it. Your video was excellent. Thank you so much.

@dugroz
@dugroz 3 года назад
Hello Ylena! I hate to say it, but if your wooden bed is that noisy now, I doubt adding either would solve it (adding plywood or a bunkie board just lays something on top of the already noise bad frame) You can try to tighten all the nuts and bolts, which might help, otherwise, may have to start from scratch.

Hi Dugroz, Thanks for the review about box springs vs bunkie boards. Good info. My question: I have a beautiful queen headboard and footboard with frame. I would like to get a king mattress but worry that the headboard would look "narrow." My question: Would it be feasible to buy a king size bunkie board and attach it to the side rails of my existing queen bed frame rails? I know the king mattress is about 15.75" wider than a queen so it's 8" on either side -- but with the king bunkie board, the larger mattress would be supported. What do you think? Thank you. SK

I've tried some of these solutions for my c1910 heavy brass bedframe, so far they've all broken within a year. One of the issues is the narrowness of the metal side-rails, also there are no center support bars. At this point I'm about to give up and just make a nautical rope webbing for it instead. At least I know the frame is sturdy, lol.

Should I get a low profile box spring instead or should I get one of the options you mentioned? I don’t want to purchase something unless it actually works because my slats practically sit right on top of the side rail. Never had a bed like this before and I guess as a 23 year old I probably should’ve asked a bit more on this type of bed

If your slats keep coming out, I doubt a bunkie board would fix your problem. Note that the bunkie board sits on top of the slats. Sounds like those slats need to be screwed in place. Of course, it depends on the bed frame. There are some that have a "lip" around the edge the bunkie board could rest on. I don't think it matters much either way (wood vs. metal). The Gulzar would be a little lower to the ground since it adds no height. If you want some thing a little taller, might consider a 4" tall box spring like this one -- amzn.to/38CIn1I - just measure and go for it! :) Thanks for watching.

So why use the bunkie board, could you just add more wooden slats to the bedframe? We have a Sterns and Foster king mattress that is very heavy and when placed on box springs it’s too high off the ground. Thought about adding slats all the way across and removing the box springs, currently there are four or five slats and they have feet and are screwed into the bedframe.
@dugroz
@dugroz 4 года назад
You could do that; by adding more slats you are essentially just "making you own" bunkie board equivalent. Some people might feel fine doing that, some people may not be "handy" enough or have enough time so would rather just buy one!

Question: My bed is a sleigh-bed like yours, looked nearly identical when you had no mattress or another support level beneath it. What happened to mine, is the three or four wooden slats and the legs in the middle got all messed up, snapped apart, etc. So what I did was replace the wooden system with a metal system I found on AMZ. Seems to be good first level support, but now the bunkie boards I have on top (I say bunkie boardS because there are two on my king size bed, two twins I think make a king), but now those bunkie boards are squeaky. When I put my hand between the mattress and bunkie board and press down I can hear a pretty loud squeak too, especially if I press down where there are no slats. Sounds like the squeaking is probably in the bunkie board setup itself and not between the bunkie board and the slats. What's my best replacement option to make it stop? I'd love to hear a few options if you don't mind. You seem pretty informative.
@mrrobvs
@mrrobvs 5 лет назад
Also, what are the chances of the replacement (like a metal one) not fitting? I remember once going to the mattress store and falling in love with some sort of reclining/positioning bed base, but they said it wouldn't fit in my current sleigh bed. So are there limitations with support systems?
@dugroz
@dugroz 5 лет назад
If your bunkie boards are metal, one thing to try that is low cost is to get a lubricant with teflon (like this one) - amzn.to/2jJY9mK and spray all the parts that connect (all the joints). That really worked for me. If they're wood, then for a replacement I'd look at something metal like the one in this video. I doubt the metal ones wouldn't fit, but can't say for sure. Just remember, if you buy on Amazon, you have 30 days to return them if it doesn't work out!!!
@mrrobvs
@mrrobvs 5 лет назад
dugroz thanks. I’ll start looking into it.
@lesthomasson7220
@lesthomasson7220 2 года назад
More than likely, it’s squeaking because your bunkie boards were made with a piece of cardboard inside, stapled on top of your slats, and it’s squeaking in the empty space of the slats. Some people will say that cardboard inside a box is a sign of a cheap box. I disagree. I think it’s due to not enough slats inside causing the card board to sink and shift around. Also, king mattresses require two boxes. Width of a twin, length of a queen. A box doesn’t bend like a mattress, so a one piece king box would be challenging if not impossible get into some locations
@johnguercio6635

If there is significant distance between the metal slats of a platform bed, could non-bendable, thick, laminate flooring be used in the place of plywood or a bunkie board for supporting a foam mattress?
@dugroz
@dugroz 2 года назад
Honestly, I have no idea. Never tried it. Good luck!
@lesthomasson7220
@lesthomasson7220 2 года назад
The least amount of space you have between slats, and the wider the slat, the better. This is especially true for a foam mattress. The best thing in the world is to have a solid top for a mattress to sit on. But it’s more costly to produce, so you don’t see it. The cheaper the foundation, the wider the spacing and thinner width of slats. We build ours at about 31/2 “ spacing, 21/2” wide slat. Best we can do to be competitive. Spacing will throw your spring and/or foam all out of wack, and will definitely ruin memory foam if you have a double sided Matt. And, double sided is the way to go, no matter what a salesman tells you. There’s several reasons why on that subject

@DugrozReports

Well, that depends on the bed frame itself. Some have a "lip" around the edge that that whole box spring can go on. If not, then you need the cross bars. Thanks.

Hi Bethel! Thanks for watching. My "best guess" is that the problem isn't with the slats, and being 3.5 in apart is OK ... especially for an innerspring mattress. My guess is that the mattress is just not comfortable. How old is it? You could try a mattress topper such as this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jrc_Dm10Kz8.html

Maybe my body just needs to adjust from the change from a boxspring to a platform with slats. The mattress was purchased in October and its a beauty rest pillow top so its pretty thick. Waking up with some hip pain so I thought maybe i needed to add a bunkie board or something for support underneath. Hi there! I found your bedroom informative although I’m still in need of advise about my mattress dilemma. I have a traditional bed frame which requires some sort o foundation. Last week I purchased a 9in box plus a 15.75 (very high mattress) and my bed is dangerously high and looks ridiculous. I’m cannot return the mattress or box and paid over 3k so parting with it it’s not an option 1 week later. I’m afraid buying a bunnies board alone will still show a major gap from top of mattress to the headboard. Not sure what to do and hope you can offer advice. Thank you in advance!

I bought a metal platform bed frame from amazon(with metal slats) and a $150 memory foam mattress from Walmart. I added a mattress topper to it and it has made it more comfortable but I feel like it could use more support. Should I buy a box spring and put it underneath?
@dugroz
@dugroz 5 лет назад
Hi Matt, good question. I'm not sure, but I wonder if maybe the lack of support has more to do with it being a $150 Walmart mattress than the lack of a box spring. Here's a way to test it out: Take the mattress and put it directly on the floor (can't get anymore support than a flat floor!) and sleep on it there for 2-3 days. If that makes a difference in the "support feel," then yes! Get a box spring (There are some links in my description) or a flat board with some holes it in. If this test doesn't make a difference, then you know it's a problem with the mattress. Hope that helps!

dugroz thanks! I will try that out. I think it may have to do with the space between the metal crossbars.

I hope you have a solution....I just bought a Casper Queen wave hybrid. We got a bed frame at Ikea that came slanted slats, the Hauga bed frame....we feel discomfort, do you think it's the bed frame/slats? Should we change the them?....we just want to get an opinion...

What do you mean "came slanted slats?" Are the slats bowing downwards?

@@dugroz sorry about that....yes they are.

What I meant was the slats bowing upward, where if I were to lie down they support the weight, once I get off, they go back to the bow position

Great video, Just curious what was your motivation for creating such a detailed and thorough video on box springs?
@DugrozReports

Well, my channel is about mattress reviews, etc (which I stumbled into) and I saw a trend that the videos on bed frames were moderately popular. Honestly, before I started doing that I didn't even know what a bunkie board was, so I figured others would want to know too! Thanks for commenting!

I’m guessing when the box spring starts to move around it’ll fall between the bars idk how that would happen unless the frame is bigger.. This is my first time knowing what’s a platform and a panel bed haha
@dugroz
@dugroz 5 лет назад
Ok, I think I get it now. You need to make sure the main bars in your box spring are perpendicular to the cross bars on the bed frame, not parallel. And, make sure the box spring is the right size. If you don't have the right size, that could be a problem. Thanks!
