Hard to say. PR was my introduction to Tokusatsu so it'll always hold a special spot in my heart but after discovering it's Sentai equivalent, its hard to deny that sentai has more to offer but PR isn't without its own merit.
Even though some seasons of Power Rangers are better than the original, it's almost unfair to compare the two. Power Rangers simply do not have the freedom that Super Sentai have, both in terms of storytelling and filming budget. What they do is basically a stitching job, trying to make use of what they're given. And sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but at the end of the day it's still an amazing effort just to produce something like this, which is so much harder than simply picking up the action footage and put something in between.
Very well said! I feel like a lot of these comments about "ripping off sentai" and "sentai is darker" is piggybacking off others opinions of the eries. It makes it more sad when they don't know what rip off means either. Both shows bring a lot to toku and glad to be able to watch both without having to compare.
If you ask me the whole "Sentai is more 'mature' and 'edgy' than Power Rangers because they show characters bleeding, and have light swearing, and they actually kill off characters" canard sounds like another case of "People being too insecure to admit they watch a TV show geared towards children, so they try to make to make it sound more adult to justify their taste in TV shows." It's the same issue certain people trying to talk up Cartoons from the 90s and early 2000s saying "Man kids cartoons were hella edgy back then, way more hardcore than the stuff coming out in the 2010s, kids today are too soft, and don't know what they're missing." And to those people people, I say: there's no shame in admitting you like kids shows. You live in a free country, and as long as you're not doing anything harmful; it shouldn't really matter what TV shows you watch. Sure there'll always be judgemental people, but you really shouldn't let it bring down. All this to say, Both Sentai, and Power Rangers are still valid.
I don't see how this isn't the case of Power Rangers being embarrassed of what it's adapting. It feels the need to front with Americanization and self-awareness where every character acts like they know the show's totally dumb and no one could ever unironically take it seriously. And I know there are seasons that aren't like that, and you know there's even more seasons that are like that. I'd love it if non-children could unironically admit they enjoyed kids shows, I'd also love it if they made PR so that non-children can unironically enjoy it too.
@@Peasham could you name times where PR doesn't take its Japanese counterparts seriously? Americanization makes sense cause they need to make it for Japanese audience. Of course there HAS to be SOME americanization. Sentai really just is super Japanese.
@@rpmblack7892 I haven't exactly seen all of PR or Super Sentai, but last I checked and from what I remember a good chunk of PR shows just replaced the Sentai plot with a high school comedy. I remember SPD definitely being more serious, and I don't doubt there are some other serious PR shows, I'm just going off of what I know. Like, the shining example is the original series. Having said that, what I mean by Americanization is really the phenomenon wherein things are dumbed down and simplified to the nth degree and catered near-exclusively to American audiences, or rather changed in a way that corresponds with what media companies think American audiences want. This has absolutely nothing to do with Tokusatsu but an amazing example here is Oldboy and its American remake.
How I see it. When following a fandom that revolves around a children's property, I have the mindset of. "Keep the target demographic in mind." It's a kid's show at it's core. Sure you can say it's more "Mature." but Jetman is A LOT different from Hurricanger you can't just brush all of sentai as mature when you have a guitar playing cowboy ninja with a burger phone as a changer.
I love Tokusatsu and I've been enjoying in the past really getting into the originals. I do tend to prefer Super Sentai over Power Rangers, but I will never forget the wonderful time I had as a child with Lightspeed Rescue and Wild Force. They sparked a fire that has grown into a passion and I should give them another watch, even if I can't stand the original Mighty Morphing Power Rangers
I mean, I’ve only watched Sentai for a short amount of time, but I prefer it to PR! It just comes off a LOT more campy and goofy which I absolutely enjoy! I still love PR though!! I grew up with it as well, but idk! Sentai just hits different for me 🥰
Both shows have good. They have their strengths and weaknesses. People can like both or one more then the other but please don't be obnoxious about it.
I always loved that there's no reason for Sentai to cater to a western audience. I mean, I feel like there aways a chance that studios will try to reach world wide appeal. I travel between the US and Europe a lot, and most of them know Power Rangers and not Sentai. PR kind of cuts off the need for that, which is really cool in my opinion.
Yeah, theres no need for sentai to sell in the worldwide cause of the sucess of power rangers, unfortunatly not with kamen rider because masked rider was so awful that toei forbid saban from adapting it again except dragon knight which was made by another studio.
Both are pretty good PR introduced me to tokusatsu and cool action fight scenes with the use of spandex Sentai has fun shows like kiramager don brothers and king ohger Whats sad is that people still believe pr is a rip off sentai when the plots are completely different and thats the charm of both of them you can pick wichever one to watch and get to experience a different flavor of tokusatsu wether its the serious rpm or the light hearted go onger Both are cool and fun in their own way and both should be treated with the same amount of praise and respect
Finally someone said it! I got some much hate for saying both are good in their ways and vary from show to show. Sure I enjoy Sentai more, but I'm very open to PR and watch some of the episodes on RU-vid and they are great! Hope this stands as a wake up call to people who portray Japanese toku as this dark edgy rated R level genre. When in reality like you said, it's a kids show, that we watch and enjoy.
Power rangers didn't adapt dairanger they only adapt white ranger from dairanger which s stupid and what's more embarrassing they adapt kakuranger as a goddamm alien? 😂😂 Mf doesn't even make any sense an aline ninja? 😂😂😂😂 That's literally a ninja and they finna make it as aliens lol stupid ashell stupid ass adaption and they also use dairanger zord amd weapon power fucking ranger use sentai footage instead of making their own version suck ass power fucking ranger Super mega force is trash aswell mf include alot of sentai that didn't get adapt to power ranger and call new power 😂😂😂😂 stupid stupid stupid
Power Ranger RPM is both my favorite and, imo, the best Power Rangers season. Also, Ziggy Grover is the best boi, and I will not let any Ziggy slander slide.
I like the fact he is calling out to those explosions that is happening in the background, and those anime eyes on their RPM Zords.... And guess what, the production is equally as awesome for coming up with explanations for both.
as a child I def experienced power rangers (MMPR, the 90 Movie, and SPD) at an early age, but at one point I stopped either from not having cable or parents thinking it was too violent. it wasn't till I discovered Sentai at the age of 18, the vibe and energy it has was completely different from PR and I def vibed with it more. i respect PR for introducing toku to a majority of people in the west, but I honestly can't go back to PR especially when it comes to Story with the mix of the soundtrack (I'm a sucker for Trumpets man, Sentai music gives me goosebumps) i really hope PR can step up their A game when it comes to music, kinda tired of "Go Go Power Rangers" for the 13th time
I'm so tired of the whole "kiddy = lesser" argument cuz, one, even Sentai can get kiddy, and two, who's to say that's a bad thing? We're all watching adults in colorful spandex to have fun, aren't we?
Because Sentai purists are purists and they won't freaking stop being jerks just point out their hatred. Power Rangers. I'm not as big of a Sentai fan and it's again the fans that just won't stop.
Personally I just find the idea of these adaptations to be archaic and unneeded. Just like we don’t need 4kids tier of anime dub, I feel like we have outgrown the need to “Americanize” other countries products.
This is why I feel some type of way whenever a Tokutuber suggests an adaptation of Kamen Rider, it's like, no, that's completely unnecessary in the modern day lol
One thing I always loved is when Power Rangers goes it's own route and does original stories or characters like with RPM. Hell to this day one of my favorite 6th Rangers is the Titanium Ranger from Lightspeed Rescue and he's as western original.
Super Sentai the only reasons are "Characters" and the music is epic as hell . Power Rangers has to tone it down allot in storylines and Character backgrounds .
Here is the problem with these kinda comments cause they use the word adult themes to justify their claim which is inaccurate cause for a show toning it down for kids but that is entirely false but not entirely wrong
With the understanding that I'm someone who mostly watches kid shows, I have to say I think it's very important for adults to not exclusively watch kid shows. If you think superficial things like blood and swearing are all that separates kid's media and adult media, you have a very immature understanding of maturity, and probably a very limited and oversimplified view of the world. Super Sentai is very unambiguously a kid show, and I am concerned for people who can't see that. I don't mean that in a judgemental way, I am genuinely concerned for them.
Fun fact about Zatch bell or Gash bell. Theres a squeal to Zatch bell and its called Zatch bell 2 . It's been monthly made manga right now but I been enjoying as someone who has grew up with it so I want to spread the word. Also love you marcos for brining him up in your videos. Love seeing your work and all the Tokutubers as well
Both have their strengths and weaknesses. A lot of the discourse I see comes from sentai purist elitism. I watch both for different reasons, and at the end of the day, both are silly kids shows about costumed heroes made to sell toys. The whole “sentai is darker” thing is solely because of a cultural divide as to what is allowed to be shown in a kids show in Japan vs the west. Japan is just more lax about certain subject matter in kids shows. He’s completely right that it doesn’t matter which one is “better”.
My problem with PR is that... it doesn't feel like there's much there that an adult can enjoy, if that makes sense? Like sure, they're kids shows, but a kids show and a show only kids can enjoy are two very different things, and while I wouldn't say every PR show can only be enjoyed by kids, I'd definitely say that a lot more of em fall into that camp as opposed to super sentai. I don't even think that's a particularly unfair criticism to make since I remember being a kid and being a lot more interested in media everyone can get something out of as opposed to media only I could get something out of, although that interest was obviously subconscious. Basically what I'm trying to say is, Super Sentai is Bluey, Power Rangers is Peppa Pig.
True, Sentai targets all ages while PR only targets kids, theres a reason they pander to the mmpr crowd since thats when most people were watching power rangers.
@@justinarzola4584 Yea, exactly. I can't help but think it's disingenuous to say that super Sentai has kids stuff in it just like PR when the overall product is still obviously geared towards everyone being able to enjoy it. Sentai might have something to say, or it might have some creative or artistic thing the creators wanted to achieve, alongside just generally taking their story and characters more seriously. Yeah, PR takes itself seriously too... sometimes, very rarely, but you're not gonna tune into PR FOR the story or character development unless you're reading the comics.
Great video as usual but can you please repost or make new everything wrong or right with the duper sentai or kamen rider crossover you use to do we all really miss them and want them back.
If asked which is better, I will agree in saying that they both deserve respect and are good. But my personal preference in what i like more is Sentai for tending to be more liberal with there censership. Also, to my American ears, all the Japanese names sound so cool all though I know that they tend to be more cheesey if you know Japanese
I would like to recommend you watch Satria Garuda Bima, an Indonesian Tokusatsu series inspired by Kamen Rider Black. You may then do a review on it in near future. You can do the history on Bima, Dogengers and the Gransazer series.
do you have one on sentai vs kamen rider??? im really interested on the main difference between the two. Im mostly interested in the difference in tone or anything like that.
Both do things differently Power rangers was my first toku series It holds a special place in my heart But I also watched ryukendo and rescue force And some ultraman Tokusatsu is a really special genre to me its pretty unique No matter what series they do different things Also zatchbell goated
3:30 I saw a GIF of Tommy Oliver saying 'The way to be cool is to stay in school!' And 8:15 Zyuranger isn't boring. I just started watching it as my first Super Sentai and honestly, yeah. It is calm. And it does take its time with things. The first mecha fight was in episode 6 while it was in episode 1 or 2 in Power Rangers. But Zyuranger is still a masterpiece of a Sentai and I'm really enjoying it. Marco, at least give it a try. It will not disappoint. Lesson of the week: ZYURANGER IS AWESOME!
I really enjoyed your video. I do agree that Power Rangers does need more respect. because I couldn't even imagine trying to make a entirely new plot from a different show and mashing the scenes together and making my own story. I love the video I just didn't love that clickbait part. And maybe in the future what's the way Power Rangers is going we might even have to do this argument anymore what's Power Rangers doing their own thing
I’m thinking that maybe the Japanese suits, for whatever reason, leave a greater impact when using the final attack on Rangers or something. Hey, even the Power Ranger suits get smashed helmets, but not as often as Japan does.
Power rangers introduced me to super Sentai but for power ranger I look for more originality in America than the just a dumbed down Japanese version like samurai. Mmpr season 1 Vs zyuranger has both pros and cons. I keep up with the latest super sentai with the themes and creativity like the new one king ogher. Like power rangers anniversary 30th doing more originality Toku with CGI. Also legend of the white dragon is Toku inspired. We need more high quality American Toku! Like comparing Japanese Godzilla Vs American Godzilla!!
Both franchises have its positives and negatives. But one thing for sure is that the Super Sentai toys look way better than Power Ranger toys. The changers are way more show accurate than the morphers.
As someone who didn't really have any attachment to both(I only watched Kamen Rider and Ultraman the most as a kid), I would say I like Super Sentai more. First of all, I just prefer most of the Sentai show instead of the PR counterpart, some PR shows that I think would prefer over their Sentai counterpart would only be Zeo, RPM, Dino Charge and Ninja Steel(mainly because Ninninger is one of the worst toku I've seen lmao). Moreover, I just like most of pre-Zyuranger shows, I can confidently say that Flashman and Liveman is somewhere in my top 5 fav sentai shows, and I also really enjoy a lot of other shows from that era, it's just an extra icing on the cake. And finally, the fact that my first exposure to PR was Megaforce didn't help either lmao💀
Whenever I hear "Oh, they turn things down for kids!" I always point towards Engine Sentai Go-Onger VS Power Rangers RPM. Now this isn't me saying "Grrr, RPM is dark and EDGY and GRITTY GRRR!!" but I think RPM is one of few PR seasons that plays things completely straight.
Super Sentai is only slightly more mature lol heck sometimes even more childish with sped and cartoonier scenes,Dark and Serious is more like Amazons and Black Sun
not gonna get into how I got into toku but I will say I grew up not being allowed to watch Power Rangers, how I even found out about kamen rider is still unknown to me. I haven't started watching Super Sentai yet but I'm excited to simply for the fact that I can buy the much easier to find power rangers figures of the Rangers I like. starting with Goseiger after I finish kr build and ryuki, wish me luck, I hope i like it
I get your point that you’re pointing out that «it take a lot of work to adapt a serie» BUT!!! It’s more work to do all original and by them self! While Power rangers Watch over the super Sentai Season they Are trying to adapt, and choose on how and What they want the show to be! So Power rangers already have the work ready, just now they have to adapt it! While Super Sentai have to do it all over again each year🤨
I appreciate you having your own opinion. I actually respect it. However for me I'm just gonna be Blunt. I prefer super santaI far more than I do power rangers. Power Rangers feels like an adaption but it feels like a cheap adaption to an extent which is why people kinda feel it's a copy. (I mean even China puts more creativity in their Tokusatsu.) Regardless, PR has been innovative by creating their own lore and some times making some seasons more interesting than Sentai seasons such as, WF, MMPR. Zeo, In Space and LG. It's because of PR so many Western fans know tokusatsu. Though that might be true it does feel like Power Rangers has also give Sentai a a negative branding. Because of power not being able to be consistently dark and mature in some ways it allows a lot of audiences to see it as boring and predictable predictable making it lame. The best way to describe super sentai is that it's like an anime; it has a lot of goofy, quirky stuff that seems child friendly but when it gets serious it gets serious. Just look at Build. Darkest Kamen Rider show in the Hesei phase 2 era but goofy sometimes. Kind of like One piece. Hunter X Hunter and Naruto. Japan not scared in making their kid shows appealing but will make it dramatic. This is what most ppl mean by it's more "adult" it's for everyone. I don't hate Power Rangers I just don't like the level of cock sucking The mighty morphin era gets. That's not to say they shouldn't have any continuity but damn is that era overrated. Super sentai mixed references to previous seasons but yet let each season stands as its own specific series cause when you think about it that's what super sentai & kamen rider are, a series within a series
See i did love power rangers before super sentai but around when super megaforce was airing i was deeply interested on gokaiger cause the deep storylines and bigger climax.
I think for a lot of people the different feel comes from A) not knowing Japanese makes it tougher to tell when acting is bad (not to say I can judge!) or dialogue is lame and B) the cultural aspect makes Sentai seem more interesting than another American show. B is why Shinkenger is great and Samurai seems like a weird copy paste translation. Shinkenger is very Japanese and Samurai seems like a B-movie parody. IMO anyway.
Both are super nostalgic to me since I was one of those rare kids who knew about sentai and pr both I can enjoy a lot though I would be lying to myself if I said sentai didn't have the better Morden seasons.
I really do want Power Rangers to be treated with the same respect as Super Sentai. Both these franchises are the same with some different changes between them.
Still prefer Sentai more. Neo Saban really ruined PR for me, and while I've heard Hasbro's doing a good job Sentai's been on a roll from Kiramager onwards.
I think in general I prefer Power rangers (atleast of the bits of it I have watched, I am not a mega fan of either, I much prefer Rider) because its typically a more Straight faced Drama/more serious action focused show, especially in the few seasons I have watched, over sentai mostly being light and fun and not taking itself too seriously. but thats kinda the thing. depsite Power Rangers Reusing footage and suits from sentai, they are 2 very different TV shows which only on rare occasion can be compared 1 to 1. Power rangers is Mostly a Light Action-Sitcom Hybrid, while Sentai (especially in recent years) is much more comedy centric. neither is better, neither is worse, which you prefere is down to your taste in media, and thats fine.
Nice video dude. Even though I like Power Rangers so much in my childhood, Super Sentai is much more awesome than PR. Plus, Power Rangers skipped some Sentai series to adaptations in the US, like Toqger, Zyuohger, etc. Also Mighty Morphin never used Dairanger suit in Season 2
Well same. Both are great at their own way... It's good for PR finally try to go on original suit in cosmic fury... Just hope they not bring any nostalgia more over after cosmic fury ... It's good for a dino power rangers season without nostalgia mmpr sometime series best to stand alone even if they have similar concept...
i prefer super sentai and kamen rider nowadays. i kept watching Power rangers until the neo saban era on nickelodeon. i was getting bored. but if u like PR ok that's fine. not everyone is gotta like the same things. it's fine.
One of my favorite things that Power Rangers does is they give some underused characters from Sentai love. Like if it wasn’t for Power Rangers the phantom ranger wouldn’t be as cool as they expanded on them and gave them more relevance than vrv master. This is one example but there are definitely many more.
@@justinarzola4584That is also true. in fact there are a lot of things PR didn’t give a chance to that I think would have been really good. Like I would have loved to see a PR take on Lupinranger V Patranger
Adaptation not ripoff ok :D i bet most westerners wouldnt say that to Super Sentai because they know PR much more. But i do most of your point since most of us here share the same knowlegde on tokusatsu but PR coming from US give you the idea we are better :D because America! Haha
8:55 thank you for being controversial yet brave! Jyuuranger IS very boring XD It's funny how people still have that idea that super sentai is more "mature" lol Like, Jyuuranger imo is much more "kid friendly" than its Power Rangers counterpart, for example🤷🏽♀ I think this comes from people who mainly just watched the first PR seasons and then watched like Jetman, which, yeah, their tones are VERY different, but at the end of the day they are still both action kids shows with people in lycra beating each other up XD Also, PR in Space and Jetman totally can be compared to have the same level of silly, violence and darker themes in my opinion
Between Power Rangers and Super Sentai, there's something for everyone. I lean more towards Super Sentai myself, but there are great seasons of Power Rangers that I enjoy and recommend. To get the most out of it all, watch both!
but hey, PR is a lot better these days because they film their own choreographies and not being held back by yearly release of a new team in super sentai, PR id just doing its own thing now basically
To be honest they both of the ideas do the same thing in different ways it just mean you like presentations of one more. Personally it kinda a mix but I feel like just the ratio I watch more ranger than sentai so rangers but both are valid
PR is a relic of the 90s, look at Squid Game and Parasite, they didn't need to replace the cast and make a new story in order to bring them over from Asia. Toku adaptations outside of PR aren't happening anymore due to the fact that no one wants to make them, and there is no actual demand for them outside of adult PR fans.
@@malcomalexander9437 Yes, I agree for the first half, but for the adaptation part, it was just in some parts of the world from what I see. Some parts, didn't do adaptation like PR, but straight up Copying, or better, make their own franchise or show. If you ask why there is no one wants to adapt, I think it was because they using their time and energy to make their own, than adapting now. It's not limited to tokusatsu, but every other entertainment.
PR and SS has both pros and cons. I grew up watching PR and one of my fav is rpm. But as I grew older, I started watching sentai, specifically Gokaiger and Shinkenger. The thing that I dont like in PR are the opening, transformation and fighting. Their opening stick to the "Go Go Power Ranger" stuff and heavy guitar riffs (not all, but most), except Mystic Force, which is a banger. The next thing is their transformation sequence, where some of them doesn't even know the meaning or motif of the costume (I think). Then the transformation of PR are too much effects and unnecessary movements in the sequence, but the worse one is samurai, like wth, they are samurai yet in their transformation, they go from ninja outfit to their actual costumes. Lastly the fighting scene. While most of them comes from SS, but their is too much talking while fighting (r u guys playing fps or something). Like when you're fighting, like real fight, you dont have time AND breath to talk that much. But still, while they have the same materials, they have their own story to told. It's not fair to say that this side is the best because they different in their own right.
