6 months ago, I bought the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure (base model!) and made some bold claims. Was I right, or wrong? Also, I show the modifications and accessories I've added. #motorcycle #advrider #adv #dualsport #ktm

If I was (which is unlikely, I generally prefer larger bikes as I don't go off road much). Probably the Ducati Multistrada V2 S or Desert X, Triumph tiger 900, Honda Africa Twin, or Norden 901/KTM 890 in around that order.

I am down to two models to choose from - this one and the Tuareg. I rented the KTM 890 Adventure (S) in Colorado and rode all over the place, on and off road, and the bike performed flawlessly. I am still looking at the Tuareg - 1. because it's cheaper and 2. Its weight is lower down and it's the lightest of the middleweights. Ian - besides the suspension being better on the Tuareg, what's your gut tell you between the two? I am worried about reliability on both of them LOL.

I sold my 2014 120GS with 95K miles and bought a 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R and road it for 10K miles and sold it to buy another BMW 1200GS. I found the 890 suspension high speed damping way too harsh and had it revalved a couple times and still to harsh. Power and handling is was outstanding and no mechanical problems. buffeting was horrible and tried several options and cheap eBay deflector helped. Seat sucked and got a Sargants. Ultimately I'm 72 and found the 890 harder to pick up than BMW as the KTM lays flat and the BMW eats miles better. at 72 I'm not getting crazy off road!

Should have gotten the 2023 basic KTM 890 Adventure not the R version, or even better Husqvarna Norden 901. They are better suited for the road, better comfort and handling, while being behind the R on offroad.

I have a 2019 Husky 501 I’ve kitted for my dual sport rides. It’ll go 80mph on the highway and once offroad it’s so easy to go nearly anywhere. I also rode a KTM 890 on road in the Swiss, German and Italian Alps this last summer. Friend was on a GS and I had now problems keeping up with him. Now I’m considering an 890R, and your honest review is giving me the confidence to move forward on that decision. Thanks for this. I’m 63 and maybe I want to spend more time on roads and fire trails than the technical stuff. But I’m still keeping the Husky! 😮

Another great video as usual. Was worried you weren't going to post additional episode after you upgraded to the R. Thanks so much for the added insight. After almost endless turmoil reseraching my next bike, I kept coming back to the 890 for many of the reasons you stated, even despite the potential reliability issues. Was torn between the Tiger, Vstrom, Taureg, but ultimately chose the KTM. I am so impressed by the power, how it handles, the low center mass is awesome and just sticks to any surface I've ridden. I'm going to use the CRF300 as my project bike, still love riding it as well. Thanks Ian for expertise!

I'd get the left control cluster looked at by the dealer. Mine had a pinched cable, which affected the turn signal. My dealer was excellent and had caught this before I took delivery and changed it out immediately. I have 6000km on my 2023 890 non-r. It's an excellent compromise bike. Few cold start issues, but changing to midgrade fuel and allowing the fuel pump to 'click off' once keying the bike on, seems to have gotten rid of any issues with cold start. I'm using the Motoz GPS rear and Motoz Rallyz front. We do tons of gravel travel. My wish...KTM should make an adventure chassis version of the 690 with side gas tanks. Thanks Ian!

Hey Ian, I bought that bike at the beginning of the year, and my turn signals stopped working after a 20 mile ride home from the dealer. After much wasted time they ended up replacing the whole wiring harness to fix it. Also it has a loose steering head bearing. The bike is great when it works. I still only have 600 miles on mine. Thanks for recommending the Cool Cover Seat. I was a bit dubious about it but it really does work. Saved my butt on a 3 hour ride in Dallas this weekend in 110 degree heat! My only issue was the velcro straps were sewn into wrong location on my version. Nothing a couple of staples couldn't fix.

Which is a plus for the KTM as only major issue likely to leave you stranded is the immobiliser failure which usually happens within the first 500 miles of ownership if it's going to occur. Get that sorted and any other issues are just little niggles that allow you to carry on riding. ;)

The big "problem" with your theory #2 is that many folks thinking of getting an 890 are convinced they're the target market (expert off road rider) of the R model LOL. In the same vein, imo the standard 890 should come with a 19/17 wheelset. It will better serve the vast majority of owners better than the 21/18 setup. With ~ 280,000 miles of LC8 ownership, I think the reliability of the big KTMs has been excellent. Here's my TOTAL list of failures: - 950S- clutch slave, clutch- all within 30,000 miles. Clutch was my fault- got myself in a swamp situation that caused the wear - 950SM- clutch slave/water pump/shaft seal, fuel pump- all with less than 20,000 miles- no more failures to almost 65,000 miles. Easy/inexpensive aftermarket solutions - 950SE- fuel pump and water pump shaft/seal replaced before failure- nothing else in ~45,000 miles - 990 Dakar- clogged fuel filter caused rough running; otherwise faultless in ~30,000 miles - 990 Superduke- no issues ~25,000 miles - 990 SMT- no failures_ 34,000 miles (still have) - 1190 Adventure- weak starter and leaking fork seal replaced in under 15,000 miles- other no issues & currently ~63,000 miles (still have); I know/knew/ride with a lot (well over a dozen) folks who own larger KTMs- most pretty good on/off road riders- and their experience parallels mine. I get it- people have a compulsive need to bitch- especially in "public". I suspect that as aggravating as some things KTM does wrt letting design choice issues linger (950 fuel pump/wp shaft seal/clutch slave anyone lol), the underlying platforms are rock solid- especially when they're used to their potential. And for the record- my Ducati/Italian/Moto Guzzi , even my Moto Morin Camel LOL, ownership has also been very good. As has my Japanese mc ownership.

I have a 22 Ktm Adv R Here’s my short take Upon delivery my lead acid battery was bad, dealer replaced with upgraded battery no charge. Some people say the lead batteries were causing immobilizer issues, maybe true I don’t know. After riding for 1 year approx 3200 miles, I’ve had these problems… Cold start up. Dealer said reported problem goes away after break in period. I can confirm it has never gone away. These issues dealer fixed under warranty Rear shock leaking. Moisture under screen. Quick shifter. Hard down shift from 5th to 4th Dealer said needed a software update and no problems with that since. Overall I love my bike! Yes there are few somewhat small annoyances I’ve experienced , but if you can work with your dealer to get them fixed the 890 adventure bikes are extremely fun to ride! Great info, Ian. 3 years into a T7 & remain convinced it was the right choice for me. Yes, spent enough on aftermarket & getting suspension sorted to be in the KTM price range, but never wanted electronic wizardry & haven’t once worried about reliability. Software glitches on a motorcycle sound nearly oxymoronic to me & would definitely turn me off recommending any bike that has them.

You know that the only electronic wizardry that the KTM has could leave you stranded is also the same electronics that the T7 has. i.e. an immobiliser which unfortunately the KTM has suffered some failures (my bike included). Other than that none of the electronic stuff can leave you stranded any more than it can on the Yamaha.

Great video! Have done 16.000 kilometers plus (ca 9942 miles) with mine (-23 standard). Only had two issues: engine conked out in rally mode once, around 10 000 kilometers. Bike just died. Started again right away with engine fault symbol. Rode normally thereafter. Two starts later, engine fault symbol gone. 6000 kilometers later, no repeats (software glitch?). Cruise control doesn't like bike wash. CC cannot be activated for approx. 1hr. But then comes back. Clutch cluster replaced under warranty but it didn't help. Works fine when riding in rain. Else it's been fine. Considering the R but I'm less of an offroad rider than you. So might stick with it the standard, time will show. As for reliability well I am not so concerned. Before this I did 55 000 kilometers on a 2019 Super Adventure S with only one issue in 2yrs (starter clutch replaced under warranty). Had way more issues with beemers over the same period. The 890 is the best option I've tried in the segment, with a considerable margin. Cheers and thanks for all your excellent videos! :)

Great video, Ian. I had much the same concerns buying a KTM. Mine is a 22 model non-R. I’ve done around 2,200 miles and honestly it’s been excellent. The starting thing has happened on occasion but never more than a few moments before it’s running on both cylinders sweetly. It’s great on fuel with a safe range of 250 miles with my riding. I wouldn’t trust the range reading towards the empty mark, that said. KTM need to address seats (although I hear the later one is better (hardly difficult). I’d like indicators that show which direction which would help in bust towns. I hate the inability to save the headlamp on as a default instead the daytime light which, to me, isn’t enough to warn myopic drivers you’re there. It’s still way more fun that my GSA or ATAS, great bikes though they both are. Keep up the great work. Cheers, Ian

Thanks for explaining about the 890. Top-focused content, as usual. For people concerned about bikes with too much tech that may break, there is the DR650. It's about as pure and simple as a bike can get. The DR may still be competitive with modern bikes and not just the typical XR650/KLR the DR usually compares with.

I had an 890R. Made a lot of tweaks to it in an effort to make it a unicorn bike. In the end I sold it. I came to realise that for my abilities The 890R (and midsize ADVs) are jacks of all trades and masters of none. I found the bike to be just too big and heavy offroad. At the same time it wasn’t the most comfortable on road. I was fortunate enough to be able to sell it and purchase a 1290 super adventure S and a Honda CRF300L with upgraded Rally Raid suspension. For me the 1290 covers the bases for long distance and road touring with some light fire road riding and the 300 covers more adventurous (for me) riding and light weight touring.

I changed the screen to the r model and. Bought some rubber c shape extrusion and stuck it either side of the screen from top to bottom, this speed’s the air flow over your head.

We have had issues with the traction control on 2 of these bikes. We did a trip put to Colorado and rented one, and the traction control would "fail" and disable itself, a software issue that could sometimes be fixed by cycling the key. We liked the bike enough that my father bought one when we came back east, and have had the same issue. Another problem I had on my 890 out west was with the quickshifter, the bike would drop back into neutral after shifting into 2nd and sometimes third, which was alarming when passing traffic. It happened once while I was passing a truck and accidently banging off the rev limiter with no power was very scary.

I really wish a Japanese manufacturer would step up and make something comparable to the ktm 890. I refuse to buy a ktm with all the known reliability and tech gremlin type issues. But it’s also hard to buy a bike like a tenere or a vstrom 800 that doesn’t quite have everything you want in a bike. Frustrating. Basically I want a ktm 890 adventure r …. But built by Yamaha. I’d happily pay thousands more then the current price of the ktm just to have the quality of Yamaha on a bike with those features ,

Never had any start up issues even camping out well below zero. No other issues with the bike - at all. It is my dirt tourer always with luggage. Had the first valve adjustment and everything was sweet - the oil is always clean. I keep hearing the negatives - you seem to be hearing them more than me. It is a tough bike and an absolute hoot to ride - I see no real reason to get the 890R. I suppose you always need to talk up the bling to make your $. Mine has few mods and I don't see the need for almost all the stuff you talk about.

I always enjoy your Adventure bike reviews, well balanced opinions are a breath of fresh air ! However, I find it interesting when ‘reviews’ talk about the ‘Dark art’ of ‘suspension’. It’s a no-brainer to me that if a bikes suspension ‘bottoms out’ often then this is causing great damage to your bikes suspension, seals, steering head, wheels and tyres. What’s the point of forcing a ‘road biased’ bike to do ‘off road’ riding ? Because ‘off road’ trails pose such challenging conditions…..often ‘spontaneous’ conditions, which the rider is charging blindly at, surely it would make sense to have the ‘premium’ KTM 890 R suspension which can cope with all the big hits which otherwise can cause such extensive damage, so sort of like ‘preventative maintenance’ mind set.

I could never bring myself to trust it on a tour, just never knew what might glitch next. Something to try, I found if I cracked the throttle open about 3mm before cranking, and held it there until I saw engine temperature on the gauge, it wold start and run without stalling or running on one cylinder.

Hey Ian Great video and honesty Would love to see a detailed video on the suspension change especially the front forks, i have a 790 adv s which i ride hard offroad and to be honest find it very bumpy on and off road, i've been looking for a cartridge kit to for the front forks, i find the back shock ok because i'm pretty light. The big question arises if i should upgrade the suspension or trade in for a 890 adv r, which i have test ridden both the 22 and 23 models both where great the 23 is better on road feel and ride comfort than my bike the 22 was also bumpy I've owned my bike from new and done 21000 KM with very few problems only a little oil leak which KTM repaired for free as it was still under warranty Did you not void the factory warranty by changing the suspension ?

Nice review! Regarding reliability, I’ve been reading comments on the KTM 890 Adventure FB page, and it’s mixed. Many owners have no problems whatsoever, while others have problems most commonly with (1) the cold start, (2) the front tire leaking, and (3) misc. electronics issues that require a return to the dealer. Quality control issues at the factory? However, nearly all 890 owners I’ve seen on FB love the bike and vehemently defend it. For myself, I’ve decided to not buy an 890 this year and possibly wait until the 2024 model year, see if KTM can fix bugs on what looks to be an amazing ADV bike. Thanks again for the review.

I wouldn’t expect KTM to fix the issues in 2024. They stilled haven’t fixed some issues that came with the 790 in 2019. 😂 I’ll say it again; You either care about high performance and buy a KTM or you care about reliability and buy Japanese.

The cold start and warm up from cold is a lot better (not perfect) with a cat bypass. I put the Arrow Cat Bypass/remove on my R and I find it runs so much better, has more power, sounds better, and the cold start is so much easier. I find I only have to hit the start button once or twice to get her started in the morning now, before it took four or five times and it would quit a lot when it was cold. I do notice the unburned fuel smell now when it is cold though. Maybe that helps someone. It just runs so much better. Plus the cat weights six pounds and some change and the bypass weights less than a pound. I bet the titanium models are even lighter.

It’s just balancing between the speed and utility on and off the road, plus you can drop free as many parts available from almost anywhere. I say you can never go wrong with it just bare in mind that you know motorcycles stuffs and some mechanical knowledge so that you can get the best out of any motorcycle you own

FWIW, the XT2 has a different connector which is a bit of a bummer if you share the Zumo between multiple bikes (I do this). It is, however, a decidedly nice upgrade. The Tread app is pretty sweet and the syncing of tracks built in the app to the device is reliable and useful when out on the trail.

So no more KTM, Husqvarna, Gas Gas or CFMoto. Looks like its back to Triumph for me. I have 18k trouble free miles on my 2019 790. Checked the valves at 15k no need to adjust, all within specs. I have a 2016 KTM 690 so i figured why bother with the R. I figured if I’m riding off road (not talking about FSR or dirt/gravel roads) I have three other bikes, (two KTMS and one Beta) that can out do the 890 R with me on them any day of the week. Try the Shinko 705s. I’ve used them on a DR650, Super Tenere 1200, KTM 1190 and on my second set for my KTM 790. I get over 6k from the rear and last set I bought cost me $225 delivered to my door. I have the 2020 790R with around 20k miles. It’s been extremely fun to ride, even on street. It’s kinda difficult to have a chill ride offroad because it just begs to go fast. That being said, I’ve had numerous issues: no-start “immobilizer error” (fixed with new battery), air in brake lines, defective front brake rotor, and now just paid to diagnose and replace a faulty pulser coil that left me stranded. It’s been so fun to ride but it will definitely be my first and last KTM. As a brand they just feel cheap and I’d rather have a bike that starts and has less issues
