This comparison comes a couple of days later for me...But i've already watched your 890 adv, 890 R and Tuareg series videos . I almost purchase a 890 adv, but I was worried that the suspension was not adequate for me, my weight and short travel. Then I dislike the 890R looks. that high fender and seat is just ugly IMO. So after many videos watched and reading a lot, I decided for the Tuareg 660, which seems like a reliable bike, I love the looks ( I wanted an Africa Twin but decided againts big bikes) , good suspension and it has the conveniences I like: Tubeless, engine sound, cruise control, weight, etc. I like from KTM adv , that the design eliminates the need for high crash bars (weight and $) and the rear holding rack. I am having a difficult time finding a rear rack I like for my Tuareg

I currently own a 390 adventure, and I know it's assembled in India, but they should definitely make their QC process better. During the first 600 miles I've had a dead battery that had to be replaced, TFT flickering if you are driving and there aren't clouds covering the sun, quickshifter that works randomly and also goes into neutral on its own, which I've found to be a bit concerning when going downhill and using engine brake. There have been more issues, but those are the ones I can remember right now, and it's a bike with 600 miles / 1000 km. KTM should do better if they want someone to later upgrade to a KTM 890 Adventure, they might be build in Austria, but if there are products under your umbrella which are faulty, you should definitely step up your game. Additionally (and this will not be a problem for many people) in my country base models (890s) don't sell, last time I went to KTM to view one I had to order the bike before I could sit on it, and that is just insane. In the case of the R model, people aren't buying it either, today I saw the 2023 model was priced at around 17.8k USD, but last year it was around 24k USD (motorcycles are really expensive here due to taxes), but that is a really big discount, because simply people don't buy them. Sorry for the long text, but just wanted to vent a little bit, I'm sure there are people in countries where you can find good quality dealers who will fix every issue you have, but around here, if you break something it might take months to get a replacement, the technicians don't really know how to work on a bike with so many electronics (and this wouldn't be an issue, if things just worked). To summarize, I think KTM should work on their QC process on all of their motorcycles, someone who is buying a 250 or 390 today could be someone buying a 1290 in a couple years, but if they are disappointed with errors, they will surely look at other options. Greetings from South America

It seems people like to trash talk KTM and maybe sometime they deserve it. However I got 4 seasons and 30000 km on my 790R and one season and 12000 km on my 890 R. I love the bikes and would highly recommend them. For the price and performance it would be hard to find any other bike that would compare.

My son has a 2023 390 and zero problems. I had a 2018 1290 SAR with 5000 miles and zero problems. I currently have a 2023 Husky 701 with 2500 miles and haven't had any issues with it. I'm not saying other people haven't had problems but being the internet the way it is who knows whether all the complaints are true.

I just traded in my 23’ 890 base for a 23’ GS. The weight and handling of the 890 simply can’t be beat. I ride alone, and long distance. Right or wrong, I was always worried about the reliability . I never had a problem, but just couldn’t shake the concern. Great bike, I just didn’t trust it. I will say however, for your avg to medium rider- the base is plenty off road. More capable than the rider. Much better on road. I think it fits most riders better in fact.

I've had both 890R and a '17 1200GS and a '19 R1250GS. I think the BMW's are extremely reliable. You'll get an occasional fault message but rarely something that will end your trip or ruin your day. I sold the 1250 with 40,000 miles on it, with lots of off road time and it never missed a beat. But if you want to blaze througmh the tough stuff the 890 is hard to beat. Although my DesertX neck and neck with the 890R.

The 790/890 line of bikes are just incredible off road. I had the standard version, and was great on road as well. The 1250 will be used for longer travel and light off road. I really liked the 890 though, and was just fantastic size/ weight and handling. Plenty of power. Just a great all around package. I never had a problem other than the coolant leak- no big deal ( only about 3500 miles on the bike ) The real problem was in my head…. Couldn’t shake the reliability concern, which sapped the fun out too much. I hope KTM can outgrow this perception, bc their bikes are really good performers.

Very nice comparison! From reading on-line forums I know there are pros and cons to these bikes. Nevertheless, I was edging close to buying a 890S, when for the 2024 model year KTM pulled the 890S from the US market and reintroduced the 790S, with non-adjustable front suspension. I decided to buy a Tuareg 660, and got a good deal on a new 2023 model. Your Tuareg series has been extremely helpful to me, thanks!

Thank you once again for a very comprehensive, easily absorbed run down on these bikes. Your previous videos covering the new kTM390 intrigued me and after checking them out at Mt. Baker Motor sports, in Bellingham, I bought one. That bike us probably the most fun bike I have ever owned. I spent 20 years on Road Kings while also having various pre- 2008 KLR650s and pre-1989 DR350SEs. 8 years ago I bought an R1200GS Rallye and marveled about the technology, highway ride and performance. I still own the R1200, but after watching your video, am putting on my gear and headed back to MBPS to check out the KTM890. I have complete trust in your appraisals of bikes and gear. I want to thank you, quite sincerely, for your commitment to adventure riding community. Big Rock Moto us always the first source I check when searching for this type of information.

Hi Ian thanks for taking time to make these videos a huge help, dad and I are both looking for new bikes to ride to Norway, Nordkapp and Iceland 🇮🇸 been looking at alot of the Japanese stuff but nothings caught our eye had alot in the past. The 790/890/901 platform is really interesting both previously had 390s which we had issues with on the displays and stalling on one bike an pdi issues left a lasting impression though even though we got refund hence looking at the twins now, its a shame they hadnt got the new screen on the 390s yet. If you dont mind me asking whats your take between the 890 base and the norden 901 base now youve had both inc wind buffeting. Im 6'2 and 32" inseam an i was suprised when i sat on the expedition how much of a nightmare it was far to tall, the 890r i could get one foot flat or tip toes on both, then sat on the stock norden which felt sorta close to the 890r an the 890standard seat height was really good especially for my dad. We also looked at the new chinese built 790 over here looked decent an i liked the colour noticed quite a few grand off new ones over here stuck an insurance quote in hardly anyone was covering it, plenty on the 890 though an was about £500 or so difference in favour of the 890 even though it was more expense with more companies to choose from worth checking out for any uk readers before you buy one. At the moment id say im leaning towards the 890s, normal norden 901 or a older 890/790 from 2021 on

Greatly Appreciate your videos, always well a balanced, reasonable AND honest presentation! I'm seriously looking at the 2024 KTM 790adv or 890 Adv or 890Adv R. The main issue holding me back so far is the reliability issues I have read about since the introduction of the 790 a few years ago...now with the these '24 models I'm looking for rider reviews and user issues if any and so far have only found a couple of the Bike mag intros to the new model, which of course won't display any issues as the test models are all too new still.... Main reason for looking at these models aside from features is over all weight, which according to the spec sheets from KTM that I have seen to date are both within about 10-15lbs of each other, for the 790 vs 890! This is amazing if true, if it is? Why not go to the 890 or R version?...assuming no issues of reliability....well that's my thinking at least Hope you have a chance to review these new '24 series and point us in the direction of honest review decisions again. Cheers

Another great video Ian! When KTM announced the 2023 890 I'd already decided to let go of my 2019 1290 Super Adventure S. Primarily because of mileage, but also because I wanted to be able to tackle some more demanding high mountain gravel & dirt roads in the Alps (live in Scandinavia). So downsizing was the sensible route. While staying in orange. Did >55.000 kilometers with the 1290, almost fault free (just one minor niggle). So I'd not lost my confidence in KTM. But the getting there is, especially for (some) Scandinavians, a big part of the whole adventure. Having something street/road biased makes sense. That, and a friend's remark on the stiffness of the 2023 890R had me chose the base model. Never rode the R, but one can tell the stiffness just from sitting on it. Anyhow, 2023 season with the 890 base model (why can't they call it S for simplicity) ended around 19000 kilometers or ca 12000 miles. Just had some minor issues, else the motorcycle has been brilliant. And made me a better rider. To help people I've blogged about the whole experience, and will continue to do so. IF I decide to keep it. Which is where I'm at. Prior to choosing the 890S (see above :) I'd tested the 2023 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. I really liked it, but there were some things I didn't li. However, the 2024 model carries several improvements. So the question now is, one more season with the 890S, or the 2024 Tiger 900 Rally Pro. The Tiger is a far better long distance traveller, I've no doubt about that. But even with improvements I suspect the 890S is a better motorcycle offroad. And way more fun. Never owned a Triumph. Maybe it's time to try British. Or maybe stay Orange. One definitely could have worse challenges in life, cheers :)

Thanks for the video. I was faced with this question last spring and decided on the standard model because the R was taller than I was comfortable riding as well as almost all of my riding is on the road. The reason I wanted an adventure style bike is if the pavement ends, I would have a bike that could do an adequate job on gravel and dirt roads. I ride with a friend that has BMW RT and he kinda freaks when we unexpectedly come upon a dirt or gravel section of road.

Very happy with my “S” model. First adv bike, first time riding off road in 20 years so I’ve been slow and practicing my skills. I do ride about 50/50 on road/off road. Love how it handles on the street coming from 13 years of sport bikes and an 890 Duke before it. It really does everything I need it too. I’ve only bottomed out the forks once and it was riding across a V shaped ditch, my buddies 1090R bottomed out too so I don’t fault the bike at all. I’m also pretty short at 5’-7” with a 30” inseam so the shorter seat height was a big selling point. Feeling confident in hairy situations I think is more important than extra ground clearance for the average rider. Maybe someday I’ll advance enough where I notice the suspension but I think aftermarket upgrades will be enough for me at that point. Anything more serious off-road and I’ll buy an actual enduro, no reason to suffer with the wrong tool just because it can kind of do it, I’ll never be a good enough off-road rider to feel confident enough for that sort of thing on something this heavy.

Great video Ian! I think I would go with the base model because I dont have much experience off road but I dont really go fast off road because Im taking it all in. Now, I’ll set the asphalt on fire with stree riding so it seems like the base model has a great suspension for the street and a pretty good suspension for slow rides off road. I have sat on the R model and I liked it but I think if I were to buy one the base model would suit me best. The height doesnt really matter to me too much because Im 6’2” but the lower hight of the base appeals to me as well. Anyways, keep up the great work! God bless!

I don't know for USA market but for Canadian market... only 890 Adv R and 790 adv. Standard are available. I ride more on dirt road , but not like single Trac.... more fire road. Thanks for the comparison video Ian. I got an offer I couldn't refuse from a friend who mostly does single track. Off-roading for a month every year so I picked up his 790 adventure. R and he bought a brand new 690 EnduroR. I've got the stock S seat and I'm having the suspension lowered 1.25 in with the TouraTech lowering kit. I'm going to check the stock lean angle on the kickstand before it's lowered. I'm hearing about 15% is appropriate? Has anybody done this and know how far that stand needs to be shortened? I'm hearing about a half an inch... Thanks again, Ian and Big Rock Moto!

My base model has 1300 miles and has already been to the dealer three times for warranty work. I had the random turn signal failures, cruise control stopped working, brake and head lights stopped working and now the head gasket is probably gone as it is leaking coolant through a weep hole in the block. I've personally come full circle from "mid-size" ADV bikes. Having owned a KTM 890R, I felt the bike was not the best for touring and not the best for off road. In fact, it was annoying on the highway and at speed due to buffeting, and off-road is was a handful. I found myself always worrying about not dropping it because it was such a pain to lift - especially since I would invariably drop the darned thing in sand on a steep narrow downslope. By the time I lifted it out I would be praying that I wouldn't drop it again. I have since realized there is (currently) no such thing as a unicorn bike, and there probably never will be. For me the mid-size ADV bike is a bike of compromises across the whole riding spectrum i.e on-road and off-road. To that end I got a KTM 1290 S that I use for touring and gravel roads. It has amazing wind protection, awesome power, and is remarkably nimble. Frankly, aside from the price, I don't understand why anyone would get a 890S over a 1290S (assuming you're getting a KTM). I also have a CRF300 Rally (with upgraded suspension). It is a ton of fun off-road (for my skill level). I can easily pick it up after multiple drops, and I have no problem riding it on the highway for several hours if need be. Bottom line: If I want to go touring with some light off-road it's the 1290. If I want to ride dirt with some touring it's the 300. Again all very personal and I am blessed to have the luxury of two bikes. Then again, f I were Chris Birch the I would probably just have a 1290R and rip up everything with a big grin on my face. Not happening in my case lol!

I pit the 890r fender on my 22 890s. The stock 890s fender does not work well in sand. It allows the front tire to throw a lot of sand up in front of the bike then it rains down all over me and gets past my helmet vents and in my eyes and the seat always had a pile of sand in it. The high fender stopped it completely. Also the 390 adv screen with a deflector works good for the wind buffeting.

I have a 690 enduro r. I don’t get off-road as much as I’d like so it’s used mostly for commuting and quick trips to the shops. The 890 adventure would most likely be fine for the majority of my riding but I’m sure I’d buy the R model instead. Even if my off-road adventures are seldom having the extra travel and clearance would be worth it.

Love my base 2023 890 Adventure. It does everything I need it to do as someone who weights in at 145lbs the stock suspension works. Here in Canada it doesn't look like we are getting a 2024 base 890 adventure. They have dropped that down to the new 790 adventure leaving the 890 adventure R on its own. I get why they would do this now there is a real difference between the bikes.

In Europe, it’s hard to do a trip where you do more than 50% off road so I bought the standard bike. It did bottom out though off road so I’ve put 220mm closed cartridges in the forks and a 220mm piggyback shock from Tractive in the rear with hydraulic bump stop. I still have the higher screen, comfier lower seat but the suspension is a great compromise for genuine 50/50 riding.

I get the R model, if one needs the highest performing off road bike in the class, get an R. As a consumer I don’t get the S model, from reviews, it doesn’t seem any better off road or on road than the new Transalp. With the transalp you don’t have to deal with ktm’s QC and reliability issues. The Vstrom 800 DE seems on par (or better), than the S model as well.

I considered and tried the Norden 901. To me, it felt much larger! The seat width is wider which meant that at 5' 8" 30" inseam, it was difficult to reach the ground even with 1 foot especially in MX boots. The bike to me felt heavier. It would be okay for highway use with some trails. I wanted an ADV bike that I could RIDE to destination, then go offroad well! Being shorter l, I wanted the R. It Is too tall even for 1 foot down especially for gnarled sections where a guy would realistically need to paddle. The base model model allows me to put the seat in the high position for a better rider triangle for travel, then lower it for offroad riding giving me the added reach to the ground. I do not just ride gravel roads or lanes. I will do single track and rough baby heads etc. The base does very well! It is easier to life than my honda 300L, no joke! I took the bike on the COBDR last August, and I enjoyed the entire trip 100% Taking it on WYBDR and SDBDRX this year!. The rear shock does bottom out riding a fast clip over whoops with some air but it is not bad. 190 pound rider with gear

The standard model is not only lower, but also stands more on its nose, which also makes it handle much better on the road, with a bit more front end bias. Drop/raise the forks and you get a different motorcycle. I myself bit the bullit and bought a standard model with a nice discount and then invested in Tractive suspension, 15mm raised (you can simply order it like that). Going for the perfect real 50-50 adventure travel bike, here in Europe you can’t avoid tarmac. Waiting for the ice to melt and I can test it!
