Changing a second generation Prius engine (out the top) solo in under16 hours with some quick time saving tips.
Yes it was done for under $700.00 including the engine. I have never swapped a Prius engine before this so it took a little more time than normal finding tips and tricks to save time. If I swap another Prius engine in the future it should only around 11 hours.
Keep a eye on your Prius oil levels or this can happen to you. (they only hold 4 quarts of oil)

You make it look easy . I remember my days of doing that when the setup was far less complicated . These hybrids are great and very functional . Well worth the effort you put in . Great work! You are a hard worker !

Thanks. That was the first time I pulled an engine from a Prius. I can be done faster with two people working, but if you did it yourself it should be in the same time frame as mine.

I have to pull my engine because my clutch plate/damper went bad and is rattling/grinding bad when accelerating at low speeds. So i'm going to attempt this just to swap the damper and then put the engine back in. Thanks for the video!

Holy cow that oem disk cost over $140.00 new. I tossed the one on the blown engine. (didn't know the assembly was that valuable) Thanks and good luck.

@@local701are you in California..? I want to DIY swap out the low tension oil rings on the pistons for high tension ones . To severely reduce the oil consumption Is removing the engine a must?
@local701
@local701 6 месяцев назад
@@camposvazquez It's best to remove the engine for convenience. The new rings require the deglazing of the cylinders to accept them. If honing the block, the crank needs to be removed. If the crank comes out, might as well put in new crank and rod bearings. If you are getting new bearings why not a new oil pump. The if's can go on forever. A used engine for around $800.00 may be a viable option also. Chicago.

@@local701 thank you... I am glad you answered.... I swapped a JDM engine before but I still had CEL DTC engine codes.. it wasn't 100% compatible with the USDM chassis and electrical harness I will look at your video again...I am in California... Any codes means a NO PASS

Well done, but I have done this twice and it is much easier to drop both the engine and transmission out together down then you don't have to deal with the AC lines. You can then mate them together much easier. Also remove the wire harness from behind the glove compartment and hook it all back up outside the car. By taking them out together through the bottom is actually the way Toyota designed it. Give it a whirl!
@local701
@local701 Год назад
The AC was probably the easiest thing I dealt with. I just unbolted it form the block and moved it to the side (no recharged necessary). If my back wasn't bothering me at the time, I would have considered taking it out the bottom. With no extra hands around to help me do the job, I just pulled the engine out through the top. Thanks.

Hi, I want to thank you again for this video! I used it to change my engine. I started last week with not knowing how to change my oil to swapping the entire engine. I haven't started the car yet, because I'm not sure about what to do for the coolant. I haven't found a video that explains what the procedure is. To anyone who is a beginner like me, study this video, watch a few more because everyone has slightly different ways, then heavily rely on common sense to go about it. Also, take photos of every step, use masking tape, and a sharpie for wires and hoses. Could you please help me understand what things I need to be careful of before starting the engine? Does it require anything special for the coolant? Or do I fill up and that's it? Someone told me I need to bleed the system, which I am not sure what it means? Thank you for your help!!
@local701
@local701 Год назад
Congratulations and welcome to a whole new world. Nothing builds confidence like doing what some consider difficult or impossible yourself. Bleeding the air out of the coolant system is not as critical on this Prius as compared to say most European automobiles. For now just top off the coolant (don't put the radiator cap back on yet) and have the heat on high. There is going to be air in the system but most will be burped out when the thermostat opens for the first time (about 12 minuets after the first start). After the burp, top off the coolant again and make sure overflow bottle is at it's correct level. Put the radiator cap back on. Drive the car around normally and check all the levels again after 30 miles or so (after the car has cooled down). What air is left in the system will work it's way out through the expansion tank AKA overflow bottle.

Hey Local701 could driving your car with its Catalytic Converter missing (stolen) on a 3rd gen prius have an effect on the engine? I was driving my car and I will admit I was a little behind on oil change and I’m usually on top of it. But honestly after my cat got taken it put me in a kinda depressed state and I drove around with it missing and I just didn’t go do my oil like I normally do. No excuses, I messed up and knew better and should of just taken care of it. I’m not rich and have been extremely out of whack and big time minimalist for a few years ever since my brother committed suicide and my mom suddenly passed(right before koveed) And I just haven’t been myself and got behind on a bunch of stuff and just kinda do what I need and just stay to myself. I was driving my car the other night, on highway goin like 71, and I heard a weird sound behind the loud missing cat noise. Then a white plum of smoke came from the hood, and hard rocking occurred. I pulled over on highway and turned my car off, then realized I needed to get back. Car turned back on, but was only able to go about 9-12-11 mph or so and when I finally drove to this hill I needed to get home, which was a total of about 3 miles + I drove, the car just kind of gave out and electricity was still on but it felt like steering went out. Couldn’t accelerate. Anyone know what this could be? I’m extremely bummed out, my best friend got that car for me as a gift of our friendship and to help my depression and to help me help myself by getting on my feet and I feel horrible for losing it. I’m trying to figure out if I could DIY but don’t know what’s wrong. Any help would be great as far as advice goes. If anybody is in bay Cali and is handy and can recommend and cheap diagnosis, that would be great to know.
@local701
@local701 Год назад
It sure can. The 3rd gen Prius cats have coolant lines running to them. If your converter was stolen the coolant lines were probably cut in the process. The loss of antifreeze from the cut lines will eventually cause your 3rd Prius to overheat and possibly blow a head gasket or worse. This can't happen on a gen 2 Prius. (no coolant lines) Your lack of power and power steering going out is from the hybrid battery running low on charge. The gas engine probably was not running and not recharging the battery. Your power steering is 100% electric and gets it power from the hybrid battery pack.

@local701
@local701 Год назад
@@redamohamed4759 These engines only hold 4 quarts of oil and are known to consume oil more than a normal engine. Expect your Prius to burn through a quart of oil every thousand miles or so. (That's five quarts of oil between 5k oil changes) The customer has lost this replacement engine due to low oil in less than a year. You literally have to check the oil every time you fill it up with gas or risk loosing the engine.

What was the noise after u turned the replacement engine on
@local701
@local701 Год назад
The knocking/detonation was caused by the engine running very lean due to the massive amount of air that got into the fuel system during the swap. Once the air was purged it was good to go.

@local701
@local701 2 года назад
The amount of time depends on your experience level but I took my time at roughly 14 hours. I could have done it in under 12 hours without taking the video footage. On a scale of one to ten (ten being very difficult) this would be easily a solid 4 with the hardest part of the job being getting the clutch disk and input shaft realigned, followed by the maze of coolant lines, and then the wiring harness. Sorry I am crazy busy right now not even having the time to fix my own vehicles at the moment. In the current market I would guess that labor prices for this job are now well over $1,600 at most repair locations if they would even take it on. Repair shops are making crazy money with the used car shortage right now and can do a brake job in a hour for $500 vs $200 on a engine swap. Thanks for asking.

Have to prep. for the same job at a remote location. Trying to gather parts (water pump belt, spark plugs, PCV, manifold to exhaust pipe gasket, etc.) so I arrive with everything needed for refit. Any recollection of the size for the 4 bolts used to attach engine to hoist?
