In the Book of Samuel I, chapter 28, King Saul faces a monumental battle against the Philistines. He needs help beyond what his generals can tell him; he needs supernatural help. What does he do?
From King Saul to the epics of Homer, from Shakespeare's Macbeth to Thornton Wilder's Our Town -- and every campfire or sleepover in our childhood, there were ghost stories. What is the real scoop on ghosts? Does Judaism "believe" in ghosts? Are they haunting creepy spirits, or something far different?
In this video, part of a series on the paranormal by Rabbi Pinchas Taylor, we learn about the relationship between body and soul, and how even after death parts the two, there can be communication, succor, and love that passes between the two worlds.
As for the question about King Saul? Watch the video to find out!

My Catholic friend talks about spirits. That is why I am most into. I was brought up Jewish, but I never heard about how the Jewish people feel about ghosts or spirits. I wanted to hear this for a long time.

I tend not to believe in ghosts intellectually, but I won't dismiss the concept out of hand. I've had several experiences that were difficult to interpret otherwise. Once, at age nine, I was sound asleep on a cold winter night when all the blankets were suddenly ripped from my bed and thrown to the floor halfway across the room. I woke instantly, and felt a strong sense of anger and hatred directed against me at this same time. Then it was gone. I don't remember that I'd been dreaming or sleeping restlessly, which I probably would have otherwise because of the sheer speed and abruptness with which I came fully awake -it was so fast, probably within one or two seconds. It very much felt like something that came at me and was inflicted on me from the outside, not something I'd done myself in my sleep. My mother said at the time that I'd probably just kicked the bedclothes off in a dream, but I have no history of doing this with anything like that level of palpable energy and violence, before or since. The three or four heavy blankets and sheet were completely ripped out from where they'd been tucked in at the sides and other end of the bed and flung to the floor as a single piece, upside down, several feet away. The second experience, in a different house at age 10 to 12, was that I would sometimes hear the sound of heavy boots pacing on the third floor above my bedroom before I fell asleep at night, on nights when my father was at work and my mother was downstairs watching TV. This also happened one winter when we sealed the third floor off for the season to save heat, so I knew there couldn't be anyone up there. My mother and aunt heard the footsteps themselves several times, also when no one could have been up there. There are others, but I've gone on long enough. To the extent I do believe in ghosts, I tend to view them as some form of residual energy or "echo" that ultimately has a physical explanation, not as actual beings or entities.

theebondetamp27 I have a ghost in my life. He is guardian and he never reveals his appearance. Rarely, he speaks only if necessarily. He sometimes makes winds inside rooms, even with windows and doors shut tight. He saved my life over 20 times from myriad dangers like demonic attacks, fires, few heart attacks, choking, fires, etc. He saved me not only from evil spirits, also from criminals like stalkers, rapists and murderers. When I sense him around, he increases my sense of safety. He is one ghost that I am not afraid. At the beginning, I was petrified just because he was a ghost and I misunderstood him. It took me few years to acclimatise to his presence and to realise a guardian in him.

It would’ve been very helpful to have the full series of lectures uploaded. I’ve very interested in what Judaism has to say about persons who have psychic abilities and what they should do when burdened with them

Miss maybe it depends on what you do with this ability which makes it a curse or a gift. Daniel could interpret dreams. Of course he gave all credit to G-d and not himself so maybe that's why he didn't look at it as a burden.

I have never seen a ghost but I know credible people who have. It's one thing if one is grieving, the mind can play tricks but it's happened to people who were not grieving or even thinking about the person they either saw or felt their presence. Many religions do pray for their dead. Technically, we are souls having a human experience. Hopefully this raises our spiritual level by experiencing physical life. I will not miss having a body but I'm grateful for the experience of having lived. Makes me wonder if I've been here more than once bc I'm a slow learner lol ;o)

The witch of Endorsement summoned up the spirit of Samuel. Which this is one event, where there's probably been a thousand more tales told but we're not included as it was not part of the objective. Yet, I'd like to hear more on the Jewish perspective of Samuel. Where the witch said she saw Gods coming out of the earth. Where it'd be good to have more input. Then in Judaism there's Dybbuk's and ibburs as I understand it.

Can you tell me which Gedolei HaTorah encouraged writing books on the paranormal? Very interested.

Writing books on the paranormal? Not sure. What topics in particular? Off hand, I seem to remember from Rabbi Zev Leff that the Steipler would encourage ghost stories from Jewish tradition to be told to people. If I remember correctly it was mostly because it at least instilled the idea that there was something "more" to the world than the physical realm.

I am happy to hear that because it is a topic I like. You give an excellent drasha and I have a feeling that you will be matzliach, Be'Ezras Hashem.
