Nothing better than chilling by your pond and hand feeding your fish and then watching them cruise round, whilst you sip your cold beer. I'm with Chip, the fish you raised from tiny to huge builds such a bond. My biggest and oldest was 1.5 inches when I bought her and over 38 years later, she's pretty much 3 feet long, is very tame and so much a part of my life. So much has happened in my life, but she's been with me since my teens...!
Going on one of your first points about how tame carp can be and how you can train them and they recognise you. You'd be surprised how you can do the same with pike. A few years back I filmed a pike taking deadbaits (hookless) under water. A couple days later I found the same fish and did the same again. Then again a day later and the day after that.... I skipped a couple of days and went back to the swim and and looked all over the pike was no where to be seen. I started wading took maybe 3 or 4 steps and look down and the pike was literally sat at my feet. The moment I dropped a bait in it instantly smashed it on the surface. The fish obviously recognized me for free food by this point. Much in the same way a carp would do it in a garden pond... probably wouldnt put my fingers in its mouth though
@@jessehunter362 Not entirely true, small, aquarium sized fish like my tetras, gourami, rosy minnows, and corydoras catfish don't seem to mind who comes up to the tank, they always seem to recognize you as a food source, because all they see is large, blurry figures approaching the tank through the glass.
@@EarthshakerOnamazu My mollies can tell it’s me over the others in my house, but it might be that some of the other things in my house try to startle them and they need to judge threats
@@EarthshakerOnamazu my betta seems to be able to recognise me over my partner, it makes sense since I'm the one who usually feeds her, and I spend more time with her during the day. she'll still come to the glass and inspect my partner, but will effectively get fish zoomies when she sees me. I think her eyesight is at least good enough to help them see faces, as my partner and I have very similar builds and wear similar clothes around the house. as for visual range she can see me from about 5m away from the tank glass, it's really impressive and almost spooky as she'll come right up to the glass and stare as soon as she sees me lol.
First off guys that was a treat. Very nice video. Your friend Chip is a star and a real gentleman. Second thing is do a bit of research into Oscar ciclids. Believe me they learn who is who and respond like dogs to you entering the room but they don't play nice with smaller fish (they tend to eat them). To answer a question someone asked in the comments earlier. The reason the plecs survive is because Chip heats his pond as you can see at the 8min 18 sec point in the video. I have to reiterate great vid. Cheers.
Love these Koi videos lads 👌👌 bought a house this year that came with a small pond and some goldfish, having a new pond built in November with a few small koi carp bought ready to move in 🙌
I love how cinematic your videos are. They have an artistic quality to them that not many "RU-vidrs" have. Your videos are like mini films or mini documentaries and are just elegantly done. They're beautiful. Well done.
Hahahah “the thing you do is send your wife to America, and work like there is no tomorrow and there you go you’ve got a beautiful pond” wow that is a brilliant strategy! Carl and Alex your videos just keep getting better!! I never knew I wanted a koi or go looking for mushrooms so much until I watched your hobbies videos! Keep them coming✌🏽
Awesome video. I would love a koi pond like this in the future. Chip was such a nice guy and his setup is amazing. For now we’ll have to stick with our tropical fish tank
I have a mini pond 150 with 2 closest thing to a koi, shubunkins and 3 fantails. It's still such a nice calming sensation watching them swim. When I move out I would love some koi. I prefer plants in a pond to add a freshness with it.
when were kids in the 80's, we would fish all the local lakes within a few hour bike ride and catch bluegill, crappie, catfish, bullhead and channel, carp, and bring some of the best looking home from the various ponds in 5 gallon buckets with a battery operated pump to keep them alive. We figured the best of the best from each pond, then feed them the best foods, live crickets, meal worms dough, red worms, night crawlers, minnows etc along with tropical fish foods and vitamins. grow them big and strong, then stock out favorite pond with them and start again. In our minds, we were breeding the best of the best. We called them van dam fish :-) We had a blast. fed them 1" soft shell crayfish also. got them from a local creek.
I wasn’t a big fan at first but grown to love your channels, worked out which one is which and love the friendly banter. The tutorials are super good, helped me with chods and changed a few things I do. Id love to see you do a few urban approaches like Alan Blair does with park lakes etc. The likes of syndicate waters etc are boring, waters anyone can fish are good, makes you seem less “southern posh kids” 😝😝😝 thanks for the content boys.
Honestly koi are great fish and I've kept some before and still have one... But the problem is they move the substrate looking for food which in turn makes the water cloudy and murky and algae blooms start... So you need a good filtration and if ur looking forward to keep them, do a bare bottom pond or aquarium.... But if it's a Natural koi pond then its fine...
i agree with you two, yes thay do, and thay are very therapeutic and relaxing, you can stand and watch them for hours, very good filming again, i must try harder at my filming, thank you loved it 👍
Another great Vid! I had a Fluval Roma 125L tank and I had a Pleco which was around 2 inches when I bought it. It dead 😭 at 8years old and was honestly not far off the size of the one in your friends Pond! Was gutted. Really look forward to the Vids, keep up the great work
Totally Amazing too watch and very interesting. But I will leave it too you and other people to enjoy keeping fish . I can always watch other people’s fish 😄👍 Nice one again Carl
They are massive🤣👌 they remind me of clown fish with them red and white patches, i recomend you get yourself a marine fish tank with live coral its something else
My father-in-law had a 6ft deep pond like that (without window) and those huge fish were nothing but trouble, a filtration system in the garage as big as the bloody pond. Constant blemishes and parasites requiring operations (that was interesting). All I wanted to do was throw a line to them. So in short, from what I’ve seen………Hell No!
Guys I have a really challenging lake for you to try it’s called chuddley drive or new house farm in uk hazel grove it has not many carp but very big carp the biggest being 25lb
Koi are beautiful ! I have 2 questions though. I’ve looked at many u tube videos on ponds and Koi. I know there are always differences of opinions so I’m going to ask your opinions. First it appears you have more fish than gallons of water most suggest you have. I’m guessing your using a bottom drain to keep up with their poop. Most important I want to know about feeding. They all say do not feed when the water goes below 40 deg. I live in Myrtle Beach SC USA. We normally don’t get very cold water. Do Koi go dormant and just not eat during the winter months and don’t need food at all? It’s getting a bit colder but my water temp is still around 60 deg F. I’ve noticed that they don’t seem to be eating quite as much now. Thank you for your help.
Another great videos chaps. But missing the fishing videos especially a hour long or so special . Like ressy diaries or park lake some special to watch of you 2 still love the videos tho boys
Total disolved solids of 45? Gads....here we are over 300....I used to know the exact number...but..alas....my memory is faulty I want to say 321 something like that...PH 8.2 to 8.4. I have currently a very small pond with Mostly Shubunkin and Comet Goldfish...but I bought a Koi...last summer...and that Koi is on the grow...so I guess Koi are at least very adaptable. Next summer I am going to put in a much larger pond, and get some more koi. By much larger at least as large as this one..but deep, I live in the United States Minnesota to be specific and here it can reach in excess of -30 Fahrenheit which according to Google is -34.44444 celcius. So I intend to make it a greater depth than the frost level, which they say is 36 inches ..to be safe and give the fish room I want to go down at least 5 ft into the ground. I was planning on making a natural looking pond...however...I love the windows I am seeing on RU-vid ..so I have concocted an idea to use much of the soil dug out of the pond around the edge of the pond to raise it to 2 feet and fan it down to regular ground level..so it looks a bit like the pond is in the center of a hill...and then have at the front...from the entrance to the garden perspective look like a stone wall with a window in it...as I really fancy the idea of seeing them from a side view as well as the top. I am concerned though that that top 2 ft will definitely freeze ..and would it break my window? I am not sure ... But I think there would be enough room for expansion around the rest of the pond that it should be OK....I don't know...I am still in planning...but I am really liking this idea and hope I can make it work the way I desire. My intent is to do the work myself as I am very hands on to begin and have been digging holes in the ground since I was...gosh...8 maybe The first big hole I dug which was as deep as I was tall at the time my Dad put a big rock in the bottom of and filled in. I do love digging..thats why I work at building city busses LOL. Anyway I enjoyed the video, I like your pond Chip and I hope you can enjoy it for many years to come. ps. I am sorry I am a babbler...I came to talk about the total desolved solids and told you my lifes story...but I do love ponds and koi, probably because I grew up around so many lakes and here where I am now.. even though I am still in the land of 10,000 Lakes they are almost all south of me, so I guess I need the ponds and fish tanks to remind me of home.
