The fish in the park lake were dying due to an oxygen crash. We worked hard to try and save them, this opened up some difficult truths about the lakes future.

As a conservationist and an avid British angler, I am now living in the USA. What do you think of the Northern American model for conservation?
@charlesgrahammacleodstuart510
@charlesgrahammacleodstuart510 2 года назад
@@dogguy8603 I think the catch and release programs have their merit for certain species, however, there are a number of invasive species, many carried over in the holds of cargo ships, that lock through from the coast to the central states, passing through the Great Lakes. The Goby, and Asian Carp, are prime examples. Large scale “culls” are being made on a daily basis to eliminate these fish, but sadly, they breed faster that they can be caught! Domestically, the Fish and Wildlife departments, need to blanket certain states,offering collection services for exotics, that a released by owners who get bored, either caring for them, or they become too large to keep in a home aquarium. These fish plague the waterways, including the snake fish, which can reek havoc, wherever it is found.
@dogguy8603
@dogguy8603 2 года назад
@@charlesgrahammacleodstuart510 the main problem regarding Asian carp is they have to many bones, as in Americans don't like eating boney fish and there is no way to fillet a carp without getting some bones, but your right regarding exotic species, but Florida is a mess with invasive species due to the tropical climate, they hare lousy with pythons, iguanas, and snake heads. And unfortunately here in California nutria have made their way back to our waterways. But many fish species found in the states are non native to the area, a prime example is rainbow trout, and largemouth bass

*The irony of how you went above and beyond to save a fish that you had already been accused of killing* It's always been that way. The "bunny huggers" think they're doing wildlife a service by banning fishing/hunting/trapping/etc. Those of us that partake in such things are the ones that foot the bill to preserve the resource, we create habitat and food sources and do everything necessary to keep the population managed at a healthy level. All the crybaby, do nothings, reap the rewards of being able to see all the critters...then try to shame US...when they should be thanking us. If it weren't for us, they'd be taxed more to pay for sharpshooters and animal control...animals will still be killed, just the same.

The EA at that time had run out of resources in the area as it was not only this lake that had been effected. In some case (a pond in falmer opposite the Brighton football stadium) basically dried up and all the fish were lost. They were keen to offer advice but couldn't supply any pumps. It really is down to the local council that these park lakes and waterways got to this stage, and they effectively told us to go away they have more important stuff to focus on (which I'm sure there is), however tens of thousands of people walk around this park and the lake every year and thousands use it weekly even daily for dog walking and to get out In the wild. Surely for these people's well being and mental health the relatively small amount of money (that they have in their budget) to fix the dam and de-silt a few of these waters would be worth it. Especially if the EA and other environmental institute found that the council's have been negligent then the council's will get fined anyway. Sorry for the little rant.

@@codkue5142 You're making assumptions about the depth of the knowledge I possess. Not that I'm an expert on, or have full knowledge of the details for this particular instance. I do know why salmon were introduced. As a byproduct, it created a great fishery...which brings millions $$$ to the businesses of coastal "fishing towns", plus million$ in licensing for the state. The town I fish near, is dying a slow death. There's a lot less people now, than there was when fishing was really good. More and more businesses boarded up every year. There WAS six bait/tackle shops in town, 10 years ago, all of which were doing great. As of last year, there was one...just hanging in there. Many other small businesses are gone as well.

The sinic in me would be looking at a wider picture to see if the council are doing it for a reason.. maybe future housing site or other, as long as the lakes not there.. by saving it you may have scuppered their plans. Go on lads fair play. Keep up the good work. Love the videos.

Well done that’s a top effort, it’s sickening that had you not stepped in the lake could have faced a wipeout. Keep making noise and applying pressure, really hope you get somewhere. We faced a similar situation years ago on a small lake left over after two huge gravel pits were backfilled. Almost every local angler cut their teeth on it and the council were no help when needed and were happy to let the lake dry up with the loss of a lot of fish and wildlife, not only no help but actually tried to stop anyone resolving the problems. We ignored them and the EA and dug out the silted feeder channel and saved the lake, sometimes you just gotta do what you need to do.

You are a fine example that with persistence, foresight and an eye on the future, You will accomplish great things even when leaders and governments are driven by their own short sightedness. Hats off to you and all the others who battled to save the fish. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard you say the council took their pump back. The water level should be very high now which is good because some parts of that lake looked very shallow. I remember when I lost one of my big koi it was very upsetting. Great video and I'm so glad I found your channel!!!! Thanks

Just goes to show where all your rod licence money to the "environmental"agency goes to.... the fact that the anglers are the ones physically helping out and putting hard work in and the council then bans fishing.... what a total failure of the authorities. Once again..

I feel that pain I was a fisheries officer for just under three years. In that time I learnt that the EA and local councils and wildlife trust are not there for the angler I’m afraid. Some time’s it’s better to walk away in your hart you want to do all you can but it will destroy everything you love about that place . to then be told you cannot even fist it anyway. your friend Tom knows the club in question it’s so hard you probably will find there is plans for this lake to become a bird wildlife sanctuary so fish are relevant. All I can say is do your best but do not over do it

thats amazing what u have done. i tried similar on a abandoned golf course lake near to me. there were fish thieves that i couldnt personally stop. it was a massive fight with the council and land owner. in the end the EA got involved and noticed there was going to be a problem with oxygen so something was done, the fish thieves vanished as a result of the EA presence and its now on the radar to keep the water healthy. Amen. I cant fish anymore. i had to sell my tackle when I became a single dad for uniforms n stuff but still take a walk around to check on the place. PTSD, epilepsy and suddenly being a single dad have actually ended my fishing because of cost so its so nice to see what you are doing. Thanks for the videos!. Peace!

@@ToolforOffice Exactly. They of course have a right to evaluate the plan to fix the dam and comment on it in order to make it compliant with the rules (they are responsible for it after all) but a straight-up refusal like this is just maddening. They view just as an increased workload and don't care about the actual benefits.

This happened at a local pond where I live and apparently it was caused by people throwing too much bread in for the ducks and a few fishermen seriously over ground baiting. Councils are worse than useless in these situations, at your lake you did far more than the authorities which is common. At our local pond it was all us fishermen who looked after and kept the pond healthy which the authorities stopped us doing on a large scale prior to this devastating event. Total respect and gratitude to you and your team for assisting these poor fish Carl 👍👍
