Managing heat generated by LED lighting strips is essential to ensure a trouble-free installation.
In this video, we demonstrate how attaching LED strips within an extrusion or directly to a thermal dissipating surface you can reduce the operating temperature (tc point). Lower temperatures extend the life of the LED strip and maintain colour stability.
We show how LED profiles or extrusions perform as a heatsink.

This is brilliant. I - like Gaz said at the start - would have thought that being encased in aluminium profile would make the LED strip run a lot hotter. Thanks for the tips and advice guys.

Thank you for the tips, great advice. have just had sections of LED strip fail in a shop after 1 month. It looks like the painter has caught the edges causing sections to fail.

Great video .. I am concerned about overheating. I understand some LEDs have metal backing to reduce heat others have just tape backing. Would it be necessary to apply metal strips to reduce heat on wood/resin projects?

That was both useful and interesting. One of my concerns is with the LED drivers and significant potential for overheating. As supplied they come with two slots on the back with the clear implication that they are fixed using screws flat to a surface. However these little boogers are transforming/rectifying mains voltage to nominal 48 VDC and as expected will generate heat. So the very hottest part of the driver is screwed to the surface (ceiling/cupboard whatever) and heat build up very quickly. I have had one (of 10 fitted) actually ‘blow up’ with the attendant voltage spike taking the LED strips with it. I am thinking of mounting to flat aluminium plate to act as a heat sink. Grateful for your thoughts.

Very glad I watched this. Have a project in mind with LEDs embedded in epoxy for a table top. Obviously from the info given this is going to result in failurs. May have to think about putting aluminium strip behind the run of LED strip to draw off the heat..Mmmm.

And remember to let the heatsink have somewhere to vent, without vent it might as well be still encased in marble!

What do you recommend for an IP66 strip which is basically the ip30 in the silicon sleeve? Would it basically act as being in air? I was planning to use them in aluminum channels but wanted the sleeve because we get lots of snow and water.

Hello. I have a question - is it safe to stick LEDs to the back of the television? I am not sure if +50°C can not damage the TV. The backpanel is plastic and nobody knows where are specific TV components under that it. It seems very unsafe even tho it´s common. Thank you for reply. I liked the video very much.

I had old bulbs in my washroom that would burn my hand if I touched the glass cover. I replaced the bulbs with leds and there is no heat at all and no heat around the back either. How can that be. The difference is extreme. From too hot to touch to no noticeable heat at all. What is the concept?

LEDs are much more efficient - so you probably replaced 100 watts with less than 10 watts - so much less heat alround.

I used LED light strips in our aluminum profiles that are placed inside the shower niche. I turned the lights on dim setting for several hours, by night time the tile in my shower was very hot and the profile was too hot to even touch. Needless to say the led strips burn out with a short amount of time.

a big mistake that is made too often is putting IP rated LED strip in the extrusion, once the diffuser goes on the heat soon builds up with the silicone coating insulating the tape.

It’s localised heat within the led strip - it won’t keep you legs warm - but your desk will 👀 look 😎 cool!

I find it wise to avoid the cheap LED strips from ebay and stick to well known brands.

LEDs should not produce any heat under normal operation. If they are getting hot, you are running too much current and will shorten their lifespan considerably. I learn't this the hard way a number of years ago.

All the LEDs in this video are running at their specified voltage. Provided they run under the specified tc point they will last as per manufacturers specification.

LEDs not producing heat is a misconception. Obviously low powered LEDs will product a very low amount of heat (almost undetectable). High power LEDs will generate more heat as more current is running thru the circuit. It is heat management that makes all the difference.
