Muse's bassist, Chris Wolstenholme deserves recognition as one of the all time great. Hysteria is extremely tough to play, a real speed and endurance test piece and if you make one little mistake it's all over.
Hysteria isn't that tough. Bass guitar is my 4th or 5th instrument, and I can play Hysteria with little difficulty. I kind of agree with "one little mistake and it's all over," but only for the one 1-bar pattern that involves crossing up and down strings at the 10th and 12th frets.
What makes muse different from any other band I’ve heard is the chemistry between the trio is very genuine. Most band members are treated like business partners or employees, but Matt, Dom, and Chris from Muse are authentic people who are like brothers.
They've played together since pre-teenage. Sometimes some media or something, speculates in if Muse are close to the end. But i don't think it's very likely that they split up at all. Matt actually said that a couple of years ago :)
@@tsunemi4869 This is the biggest thing tbh. They literally grew up with each other, deeply involved with each others families and seem to have really got the life / work balance perfected. All incredibly stable in comparison to their OOS - BHAR days especially. They’ll just keep going like all the oldies did / do. I actually think their best material is still to come and thats from someone who thinks OOS and Absolution are already 2 of the best albums ever written. They’re maturing a lot more in their sound and once they’ve stopped the experimental stage we’ll hear more of the old stuff again. I think this album coming could be that again. Being self produced. Not driven by the producer / label. Dunno, we’ll see.
Love that Chris, the bassist, couldn't give a hoot about the content of the conspiratorial lyrics and themes, and just lets Matt get on with it so he can tear up the bass to whatever.
I like that Muse didn't stay stagnant and pursued other sounds they were interested in. I agree that BHAR is their best album to date but each ablum since that has explored a new creative idea spawning some very interesting music. There's always one or two classic Muse sounding tracks on each album, Won't Stand Down is a definite return to form
For me, The Resistance is the soundtrack to a film that never got made. The whole album tells a story, including a side plot, so I always listen to it in order.
My late husband LOVED Muse, we played it as his funeral and it was so loud you could hear it outside. Pleased to say that obviously he loved the Darkness too.

I have been a fan of Muse since 2005. I can count on one hand the songs that I don't like (and even these ones, I can still listen to them without screaming in horror, it's just less good, you know). Muse have never disappointed me, they're incredible live, they're not insufferable weirdos online that I try hard to ignore (quite wholesome, in my opinion). You don't like one album's style? It's gonna be completely different in the next one, and still somehow it will sound exactly like Muse. I'm definitely happy that they're releasing this heavy song since I've discovered them with heavy songs. So much love for these men, I can't guess what they'll do next, I feel like home with them. Yeah it's 3am and I'm emotional for those dudes who carried me through half of my life, I love seeing praise for them this week 😂
I was a late developer as regards Muse, but I’d missed a trick. As most people have said on here, just a brilliant live band, that are super tight and hold the audience from the first note. The 2nd Law tour was a masterpiece. I haven’t always liked what they’ve done, but they’re brave / confident enough to try something new, and they have to be given credit for that.
Muse is one of the few bands where I don't like what they're doing for a few albums now, but I'm glad that they're doing it, if that makes any sense. Big Origin of Symmetry Fanboy over here.
Absolution for me, first album I picked up from them and it just blew me away, been a fan ever since and I enjoy all the new sounds they are bringing out Muse forever
Same - I haven’t liked most of what they’ve done since like, half of the resistances. But I love that they’re out there doing whatever the hell they want. Ive massively bounced off this new album, but actually got a bit into simulation theory because they seemed to be having so much fun.
I think Plug In Baby is one of the best British rock songs ever in my opinion. I bought that album bug didn't listen to anything after that. Not sure why, just think I got busy. Thus summer I decided to listen to their entire back catalogue in sequence. I was blown away. Even though it covers different styles (which I suspect has to do with fiduciary responsibilities) I was knocked out by their consistency and musicality. The amount classical knowledge they jam in their songs is sometimes quite outstanding. As a producer I think they are incredibly inventive. I also find the over arching lyrical concepts excellent. I truly don't quite get why I gave them a hard pass for so long but I'm glad I rediscovered them again.
Many years ago I was recording at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall which is where Oasis did Definitely Maybe and many of the biggest Britpop era bands recorded their albums (an album is a themed collection of songs by the way haha). Being a wet behind the ears guitarist and wannabe producer, I asked the resident sound engineer who had impressed him most out of all the stars that had come through that place. He said Matt Bellamy. The producer said this one time he was setting up mics for a session and MB was casually noodling on a piano and it was about the best thing he ever heard.
Huge MUSE fan. Their songwriting is unmatched and I love that they’re unafraid to explore and experiment. True artists, whether they fill arenas or not.
A musically incredibly progressive band. That's Muse's thing. That's why I like all their albums very much. I also think the new song is great, but it could actually come from BH&R. And to say "this song could have been from your band 20 years ago" is a compliment from most bands and their fans - but not so sure about Muse. That's why I love them. They take risks, are constantly looking for new sounds and are still unmistakably muse. I mean I get that and it's basically just one song. Justin keeps an eye out for rock n roll and the Muse he likes. Real Muse fans, are always looking for the new Muse.
@@TheAdArchive I don't get comments like these. The fact that the last few albums doesn't sound anything like their first ones is because they are meant to sound completely different. Muse is very experimental and besides, 80% of their discography are heavy songs. If they want to try making dramatic orchestra music, or dubstep, or synthwave, let them be lmao. Staying in the same genre gets boring for the artist even though it's not the same case for the fans.
They used to explore, now if you check all their songs everything sounds the same and they turns into their own parody. On the latest , the chorus sounds so much teleguided
First Muse song I heard was Unintended back in 1999. Learnt to play it on guitar and still play it today. Beautiful song. Muse really are an exceptional band. I remember seeing them in Japan in 2003 or 2004 and was awestruck to see Matt Bellamy playing both keyboard and guitar (and singing) at the same time. Incredible!
Say what you will about some of their latest stuff but they've written several great albums and songs, but what sets them apart from many acts today is they are not just fantastic live but somehow actually able to perform at an even higher level live than their recordings.
Most definitely, they’re a gem in the music world. And I actually really enjoyed Simulation Theory. It’s got some of my favorite songs of theirs, and I’ve been a fan of them ever since I was a kid. They take a different approach for every album and I really appreciate that
Have been listening to MUSE for the past 15-20 years and this new path they’ve taken, or old path depending on how you look at it, is exactly what they should have been doing. They’ve changed there style over the years but this harks back to what they are superb at. I agree BH&R is such a brilliant record but I also loved Drones. Let’s hope this new album is full of this kind of stuff .. great content
While i haven’t been a huge fan of a lot of their releases post Black holes, every album does have good songs -- it is LIVE where they shine. They up production every album cycle and it is a unique experience each time. They’ve also always done what they want and reinvent themselves each album. They are dynamic. Heavy, beautiful, poppy, somber, wacky.. Killer band. Period.
I went to a large music festival that had everything from Eminem to The Flaming Lips. I didn't go to see Muse specifically, but they were by far the most exciting act.
They need more hype, for sure. Muse could be the most consistent band ever in terms of the music quality. You basically never skip a song. This is very rare.
@@grenade310tri I love their older stuff, but I respect them for trying something different each album. Imagine telling a painter they can only do one style for the rest of their life. 'Panic Station' is rubbish, but 'Won't Stand Down' makes up for it.
Two of my favourite bands are Muse and The Mars Volta. The latter were often criticised for self-producing their albums; I remember one review arguing that mercurial talents need someone to rein them in. I'm not sure I agree in Volta's case, but for Muse, it's absolutely true. As with any artist, there are other people behind the scenes who make Muse what it is, and I think Rich Costey is one of them. He produced Absolution, Black Holes, and Simulation Theory - three of their best albums. Now we have Won't Stand Down, which is fantastic, but it's also self-produced. I think Muse do have the capacity to produce their own work when it's heavy, but when they're experimenting with lighter electronic textures, Costey seems to be the one who pulls it all together. Interestingly, Costey has had input on most Volta albums. Both bands also used cover art by Storm Thorgerson, who was a phenomenal artist and is sorely missed.
Mars Volta. One of my favourite albums of all time. I listened to it truly non stop in my teenage years. One of those bands I just sort of forgot about. I know what’s going to be on my Spotify later!

I must say an odd pairing of favourite bands but I like it 👌 two amazing live bands. Frances the mute quite possibly one of the greatest prog rock albums ever made and although at the drive-in will always be my first love The Mars Volta are definitely one of the greatest prog bands of the last 20 year's.
@@Bevtone I don't think they're that different. De-Loused and Origin of Symmetry are fairly similar in style, and Noctourniquet sounds like Showbiz at times. Of course later Muse sounds nothing like Volta, but both bands have a thing for stylistic shocks, virtuoso playing, eccentric vocals, overstuffed production and deranged lyrics. I like to think Volta is what Muse would sound like if they had 8 members and more traumatic experiences to write about. Also, Frances is great and all, but Bedlam and Amputechture are their true peak IMO.
Muse is one of my favourite bands. They were consistent with earlier albums, but when they got experimental with 2nd law and afterwards, it did divide fans. I'm all for it, and I enjoy the ride with Muse, but I am excited for them to go back to older sounds like Absolution album. Side note: I would love The Darkness & Muse to do a song together.
Hmm.. I’d say it was definitely The Resistance that was their first drastic step out of that established Muse sound that everyone knew them for. In no way am I saying it was a bad album but it is definitely indicative of their poppier side. I just remember when we were leading up to that album release and heard their singles and we were all like “whaatt this is MUSE?” It for sure began to divide some of the fan base at the time. It definitely made 2nd Law a much less unexpected release as a follow up. I personally dig it all! Just trying to imagine how they could have ever made 2nd Law and Simulation Theory WITHOUT making The Resistance first. I might even say that it is their most important album in their discography for what doors it opened for them

Muse and The Darkness are my 2 absolute favourite bands and it’s so great to see you react to them. I am aware about a few comments you made about Matt in 2004 and that’s all I know about your relationship with muse, but I’m very pleasantly surprised that you ended up getting into their stuff. Muse are exceptional, such a talented band and they forever seem to evolve making them so rewatchable every album tour. Love the new sound too, so reflective on modern politics and society too!
Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Yes. They are simply the best in all categories. all of their albums are great, which is something most bands cant do. they give the best live show out of anyone ive ever seen, and are absolutely insane!

Black holes and revelations will always be my favorite album, bc its a great album, and has very sentimental value to me. id do anything to go to a by request show of theres, as all my favorite songs are really rare to hear live anymore:(

Seen them live 2 weeks before they released “Origin of Symmetry” in 2001. They were really good. I liked their first album and the new stuff was good too. Really tight band and Matt Bellamy is a good showman. I didn’t follow them too closely after the second album for whatever reason. I do like that they’re out there though, making rock albums and playing stadiums. I keep meaning to check out more of their stuff.
First 3 albums and all b sides where great. Slowly kinda turned into queen cover band but to be honest they're easily the best band I've seen live and Bellamy has more talent, showmanship and compositional skill than most bands put together. The remake/remaster of origin of symmetry came out this year and is really good.
I'm in the same boat. Had something to do with them playing every festival, every year. Grown sort of a Bellamy-voice-fatigue. Which is lasting 20 years now. Not meant to sound harsh, I have nothing against the band and played Origin an awful lot. Just, yeah, no desire to put on an album. No idea why.
@@skeletonmodel When you consider how hard it is to play piano and being a showman while playing guitar and singing at the same time you can appreciate his singing more. Kind of like a droning guitar and has to be appreciated for what it is
Loved Origin, but since then it just feels like pretentious drivel mostly, but that's just my opinion. I know their record sales and sell out tours tell a different story...
Saw then at about the same time, just before Origin. Didn't really know who they were and they absolutely blew me away - not surprising they got so big. I've never been that taken with them in record though
Saw them in 2005-6ish in a theatre in Portland and they were so good , 2 years later they were playing the arena and coming out on 50 foot podiums, I was not surprised. I think everyone at the theater show probably told 5 people how good they were, Paul Allen the Microsoft billionaire since RIP was there jamming out, success as deserved as anyone.

I'm someone who liked their new stuff when it came out, but I always seem to return to their older stuff, so I am glad that this one is a return to form. I really got strong Black Holes and Revelations vibe from it.
I had always described Muse as a cross between Queen and Radiohead. I was fortunate enough to see Muse in 2007 in a theater in Grand Prairie, Texas. Fantastic show, but very very loud and bombastic, as it really was a stadium show crammed into a smaller venue.
Great live stream last night Justin. Seen muse years ago and they were spectacular. I found myself mezmerised watching them perform. They have great theatrics with the lights, beams and using a screen with crazy effects. Origin of symmetry is an excellent album. A masterpiece IMO.
I asked Justin his thoughts on the new song from Muse yesterday (Sunday 16th 2022) during his live on RU-vid, via live chat... He literally said he should have reviewed it and MAYBE he would do so the day after. Couldn't believe he actually did 😂
Muse was the band that captured my fascination with music comprised of multiple facets of expert musicianship and songwriting. Their live performances have had tons of interludes between songs that allude to a plethora of sources for riffs or short parts of songs which exposed me to so much music I had never heard. There are live recordings on youtube comprised of just interludes that I used to seek out. I was gripped by them for their earlier albums, but less so for their more recent albums unfortunately. I found the Darkness through them among other quintessential artists.
Oh thanks, I was so hoping for a Muse episode. If The Darkness are "daddy", Muse are "mum" to me. I could listen Hysteria in loop for hours, saw them live twice and I hope to go again, but for now, you're the only one on tour, lol, and so, I think I'll come to see The Darkness again ;)
MUSE are a live band. They are best heard live. I saw the Showbiz tour and they blew me away, bought the album and thought 'who is this? it sounds so different?' i was not sure if i liked it. But 25 years later i'm still buyng tickets to see them. I remember Matt saying they saw U2 live (did they tour with them?) where in awe and took inspiration from their live sound. Phenominal sound.
Origin of symmetry is my favourite album of theirs. But that's because it holds a special place for me. Listened to it so many times during my paper round as it was the first album I copied to minidisc.
Drones is still my favorite of their records for the scope of the ideas in the overall project, but boy do I love Black Holes and Revelations for just about everything else.
I saw them live in Munich around 7 years ago for the first time. Didn’t pay much attention to them prior. After seeing them live I was hooked. Their live performances will just blow you away and I can’t understand any hate that they receive. If you haven’t seen them live, I can get it. It’s not for everyone. But I’m telling you, seeing them live will change anyones opinion.

Please don't confuse drama, theatrics, fashion, giant sound and over the top production (and equally impressive videos) w good songwriting. Play a muse song on a piano or guitar at home and tell me the songwriting rises to the level of the greatest writers of all time.
Muse is legendary. I've had the fortune of watching them live, sth. like 3rd-5th row at a huge show with over 20k people. They put on a real show, let me tell you. Amazing sound and incredible stage performance. When I went, it was open air and after dark they did a mash-up of their most metal songs while a huge blow-up skeleton with a soldier's helmet and a spotlight in its mouth moved above the stage. Hardest thing I've ever seen at a concert.
My ex used to work for their records company. When they were first signed she brought me home an early version tape/CD of "Muscle Museum".. I was in a band at the time. I remember, (it was one of about 4 times it happened) when I said the rest of the guys, "well, we either raise our game, or give up, coz this is what we're up against...." The other times were after hearing Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and a local band to us.. )..
Muse is brilliant. Bellamy can play Rachmaninov on piano, shred on guitar and sing outrageously high notes that alone is impressive but they also rock. One of the real ones.
Hi Justin, great channel! I really like your music and your approach to music in general. It's nice to listen to someone smart. I'm writing about a rather unusual matter... your sweater. The pattern looks like a cover of the Polish band Republika. In my opinion, one of the most important bands we had in Poland. Even though they sing in Polish, it is worth listening to the songs like: "Biała Flaga", "Telefony", "Ask me if I love you", "Departing", "Nieustanne tango". The singer was a great lyricist, you have to believe me :) Greetings from Warsaw!
Love every album with the exception of Simulation Theory. Still saw them on that tour and it won me over on a few tunes. I do believe they are talented enough to have a vision for a record and create exactly what they intended to do, so fair enough that they explore new things and take risks. I think a lot of ‘old’ muse fans who reject anything after BHAR (for some reason), would really enjoy Drones. Very underrated and overlooked album for some reason and the tour was incredible. I also adore the Resistance and yet for most people that’s the album that turned them off. Not many modern bands can produce rock music that evokes so much emotion, muse have always had the power to create elation, but the symphonies on the Resistance could make me weep.
I personally really liked Simulation Theory because of the fact that it sounded so different from their other work. Can you imagine working the same job for 25 years and never changing anything about your work? I think the genre jumping is Muse's way of keeping themselves interested in their work.
old muse fans were missing out a lot when they learn that Drones and WOTP are rock album (again) 😂 or at least give a chance to other album a listen. some songs are actually better when you listen in sequence ie the whole album. I think The Resistance and Simulation Theory are good example. of course Drones too

That whole beginning bit about Stairway made me realize that a Darkness cover of Stairway played pretty straight would slay dragons. I know it’s the song that some of us feel do I ever need to hear it again but I felt that way about another classic until Faith No More did War Pigs in ‘89. The time is right for I Believe in a Thing called Stairway!!

I seriously respect them. Many People say that they only like their old style but they don't get that in order to stay relevant and to actually be good you have to change. Not everything Is gonna be great but you have to respect that. Saw them live a few times and they are simply Amazing!
I can tell a funny story that some people may not remember. When "Absolution" first came out, I don't recall how, but it was leaked online as the new Radiohead album (as if the new Radiohead had leaked) - it had no title and wasn't attributed to Muse, as many people didn't know who they were yet. I was in a band at the time and ended up with this leaked album, believing that it was the new Radiohead that was going to come out soon, as that's what the file was labeled as and what the forum conversations were saying. Having never heard Muse and with Absolution's songs sounding like they *COULD* be Radiohead songs and especially with Bellamy's voice echoing Yorke's much more at that time, my friend and bassist and I drove around our neighborhood with the burned CD playing in his car and we were just losing our minds because we just kept saying, "Damn! Radiohead is really going HEAVY!" lol We listened to the whole album, thinking it was Radiohead, although something didn't seem *quite* right. Obviously, we eventually realized it was this "new-ish" band, Muse we'd never heard of and ended up loving Absolution. I didn't really stick with them, though, as my taste just kind of shifted in terms of my songwriting influences at the time - but that "leak" was a whole thing at the time - a LOT of people initially thought it was the new and as-yet untitled Radiohead record. I always wondered if the studio was responsible for that leak and subterfuge.
Muse are what got me into rock music many years ago as a young lad. I love this song, it really is a return to form. I don't think they've released much that's worthwhile since the resistance in 2009, this rocks. Love your analysis Justin!

I had to look it up. Matt Bellamy’s dad, George Bellamy, was the guitarist in the band The Tornadoes, who had an international mega hit with their instrumental, “Telstar”. I’m just old enough to remember it the first time around & you’d have to have lived off grid fr the last 60 years not to know the song.
Matt is a genius. I don’t really listen to all of their stuff but you’ve got to appreciate the originality and Absolution is one of the best albums ever made.
I was practically an obsessive fan of everything from Showbiz to BHAR, my favourite memory downloading Hullabaloo from the early YT days and watching it repeatedly on the first video iPod! However from the Resistance onwards, the lyrical content changed in quality, and they became very one dimensional soundwise, especially compared to those first four albums which all have their own identity. A shame, but I don't begrudge their current success, they deserve it!
Muse is a band who are not afraid to experience new sounds and evolve. Who wants a group to stand still? I personally love all their albums and I cannot wait for the new one to drop. Especially when the producer used the hashtag #anditgetsheavier and #hornsup...I love it already.
Huge OoS fan here. Although I've liked every album, all of them having their strengths and weakness, The 2nd law was my favorite post BHAR and it was such a joy when this album finally came out. I enjoyed drones especially reapers and dead inside. Simulation Theory was either hit or miss (The dark side and algorithm are some of their best) and I sorta forget about The Resistance aside from United States of Eurasia. It was nice to have such a solid album again.
Seen them live 4 times and they are bloody brilliant at playing live. Loved albums 2-4. The albums after BHAR sounded like they were trying too hard to sound like Queen on some of the songs. Having said that, one of their big strengths is that they do try to experiment with their music. Sometimes it comes off and sometimes it doesn't but at least they try to change things up.
The theme song is a brilliant piece of brand recognition for you/ the Darkness as i can instantly tell who it is as soon as i hear the first note sung.
Yaay, Muse are back to their old selves! This track passed my goosebump test anyway 😁 Early Muse (first few albums) always gave me goosebumps, then I went off them. They changed too much. Seriously freaky video...love it! 😀 He reminds me of an aging Dani Filth 😂😭😂 I love that they've gone back to their futuristic, spacey, stormtrooper video imagery as well. Yeah, 'gaslighting' is denying, or altering someone's reality, as a form of mental abuse. From the film 'Gaslight' as a matter of fact 😁 Thanks Justin, will definitely check out the rest of the album 👍 xxx *Edit* There's a certain riff/beat in this track that's very similar to 'Bliss'. Been listening to it quite a bit this morning and it's a very political song, I think (like a lot of Muse's songs). More about the population being gaslighted/controlled by the government, rather than an abusive, personal relationship. Hence Matt playing the puppeteer/conductor to his compliant army. I'm off to watch that film you mentioned (the one with David Byrne). I've never seen it. I'm not going to name it here, the last time I did that, my post got deleted 🤔😬😂
Saw them in Charlotte in 2005 before they got big in the states (a year after seeing The Darkness in Charlotte and Atlanta (the show Cheap Trick and Aerosmith were at) 😁). I couldn't believe how huge their sound was for a trio. I also love how Bellamy incorporates keys into songs/shows.

@@SignofTheScorpion Right there with ya Lee, I've only seen them(MUSE) live 4 times but each and every time we walked away practically laughing at how freaking incredible their performance was and how much they put into the visuals/show. I think we paid $250 a ticket last time and it was worth every penny! Now with the August release coming, the thought of a tour has us all geeked out. Muse is a big deal in our house for sure

I remember seeing Muse at the Exeter Cavern when they were kids, and there parents in the audience, There old manager was in the Jolly Farmer in Newton Abbott once he said to me 'I'm going to make this band the next Supergrass' He was less than impressed when I gave him the look of 'Is that it?' thankfully they got a new manager not long after. :)
watched Muse in a pub 1/2 mile from my house in a downstairs cellar bar in front of about 10-12 punters many moons ago , they were damned good back then , they just get better and better and better . They are the pride of my hometown and we LOVE them
