DO NOT Buy an LG OLED Monitor - Here’s Why
I see you there ogling that LG OLED monitor or even 42” C3, and I'm here to tell you please for the love of all that is holy do not buy that thing.
Now I know what you're thinking, what does this guy know? I'm gonna buy 10 just because he told me not to, well go ahead, do it, see what happens.
You know what’s gonna happen, you're gonna have serious buyer's remorse, because first of all, and most importantly there are some WAY, and I mean WAY better OLED monitors coming out very soon.
We have a whole gaggle of companies such as ASUS, MSI, Alienware, and probably many more getting ready to take a steaming dump of OLED monitors on us very soon. How soon, well recently Alienware revealed they would have two new monitors available in early January of next year, which is around just three months away, and if they stick to what they said, any OLED you buy now is going to get destroyed.
Look OLED monitors now certainly aren’t bad, and if you bought one earlier this year that you’re enjoying, I don’t want you to feel bad about it, but if your thinking of buying one now, depending on what the size and resolution is, you may want to seriously reconsider, because these new monitors coming early next year are using Samsung’s new QD OLED gen 2 panels and will be offering sizes and resolutions we have been asking for for YEARS.
Now if you’ve been following the TV market you’ll know that the gen 2 QD OLED panels are being used in the best flagship TV’s available.
But more than that LG OLED monitors with the exception of the 42” TVs are using absolute garbage matte finishes which look like you poured vegetable oil. There are no words for how horrified I was to find that LG had decided to so thoroughly annihilate their monitors with such a god awful finish that blurs everything and mutes perceived color while smearing reflections across the whole screen which of course harms the contrast all in a vain attempt to stop reflections which isn’t possible by the way.
Well guess what. QD OLED panels are all glossy by design which means that the outcoming image has very minimal distortion applied before hitting your eyes allowing for the best clarity, contrast, and vibrancy, but even if you don’t care about that you should care that there will be many more options on the market next year including a 32” 4K 240Hz and 27” 1440p 360Hz which will offer far superior image quality over anything available now, and from what I’m hearing they might not cost that much more than many OLED’s available today. We’re talking probably around $1,500 for the 4K monitors, and likely closer to $1,200 - $1,000 for the 1440p option, and were not even talking about the many other sizes that have been leaked coming out from both Samsung and LG, but even with LG’s new MLA OLED panels which greatly improve brightness and viewing angles, personally I’m not waiting for any of their monitors at this point, because if they continue to take a fat dump on top of the screen and likely can never solve the low color volume I have repeatedly measured on all LG OLED’s likely due to the extra white sub pixel, than the QD OLED monitors from Samsung are just better by default, and in my opinion LG should be entirely abandoned by the PC industry and buyers until they create a new panel technology which can compete with what Samsung has brought to the table.

Why, for the love of God, are they still using displayport 1.4? These companies really are just lazy and greedy. On a flagship product with these specs to not have displayport 2.1 is inexcusable. it’s not like they have tight margins to worry about with this product.

This guy has such an obsession against matte coatings on oled panels that he devotes pretty much the entire video raving about it. In fact, he never mentions the lack of overall brightness on qd-oled monitors with those glossy panels - which they need because of that lack of brightness. 🤨 But will the upcoming oleds achieve more than 1k nits brightness at a 3% window, as the existing qd-oleds do? Can't understand why people are raving about such tiny specular highlights of brightness.

Woled adv over qdled: - if you play games or watch movies with lights on or during day without covering 100% of light from outside, woled is at least 10x times better - more resistant to burn in - better bright blues qdled advantages: - slightly brighter - better bright reds This video is horrible, just yapping about personal preference for gloss over matte finish. Matte is much better is you have lights sources or reflections in the room.

all OLED monitor brands use the same panels from either LG or samsung. you’re basically telling people don’t get a monitor because eventually a better one will come out. which, of course! only you’re continuing the illusion that they’re all different monitors. the ONLY minimal differences will be ports, aesthetic, and cooling. the base panels will be the same from brand to brand

Ever since I started using a CRT as my main gaming display, I’ve been so interested in OLED to replace my 60hz ips Dell monitor I had for over 4 years now. From what I hear it’s the closest lcd has gotten to CRT color depth and motion clarity, which is why I’m so exasperated that almost all the most attractive models are Uber expensive ultrawides rather than a standard 16:9. I hope we will get upper mid range oled displays that can do 160hz max at 1440p.
@NotEvenDeathCanSaveU

I too had a dell monitor, U27 something, 1440p 60 hz and it was awful. I got the LG WOLED now, the 27 inch that are relatively new now and the colors are amazing. I had them both side-side for around 4 days to calibrate it a bit, compare the reds and blues, which are a bit over-saturated on LG OLED for my taste and then dumped the Dell monitor ASAP. Never again.. Washed out colors and 60 hz is a nightmare. However like this video points out I agree the finish on it is trash, the matte trash that ruins the picture a tiny bit, would be great if they offered one without that coating but whatever. I still much rather prefer this as QD-OLED has been proven potentially more burn-in susceptible in new rtings review and WOLED with the additional white led row is offsetting it a bit better, later when all monitors and TVs are the .EX with deuterium it should be even more durable. Edit> Btw the fan in the LG OLED is annoying AF. I replaced it with noctua the chroma black 92mm fan with removed frames which is nicely silent, it will probably overheat during HDR content but I really couldnt care less about HDR.

@@NotEvenDeathCanSaveU Me too, really. HDR looks like another way to wash everything out. My Mom Has a ProArt IPS with HDR, I turned that off the moment it lost all the grey from windows and took away all the important pic setting on the monitor. Asus, really doesn't like you doing more than one thing at a time. Like, my old Asus, that popular 1080 75hz 24" from like 10yrs ago, can't use freesync unless you are in "racing mode". Otherwise, choose scenery? Not playing a game and not being able to use headphones from line in. Weird Company, sort of. I am still using my old LG 32GK650F-B. So, I am very careful on my next Monitor. Unless, it dies tomorrow. Now, I am afraid of Any of the LG Monitors, because the GQ950 Also has a ton of "Fan Noise" reviews. So, when they have HDR, they have loud Fans?
@NotEvenDeathCanSaveU
@NotEvenDeathCanSaveU 10 месяцев назад
@@Mr_Joe_B_619 Yeah they started placing pretty annoying fans in those, Sunon fans which seem to be more industrially focused I guess. I mean most people don't have a problem with it, some say they now put quieter fans in there than they used to but I could hear mine in a completely silent room at night as at low rpm it makes a slight buzzing vibrating noise, can hear it even thru my Sennheisers but it doesnt count as those are open-back and you can hear nicely when no sound is really playing. I have opened my monitor and replaced the fan with noctua nf92, I had to cut a bit of the metal casing that holds PCB off so the fan fits in, so the warranty is probably bye-bye. Also removed the frame of the fan so it blows air sideways a bit too, and held it in place via hotglue, I hope it doesnt come loose but it shouldnt as fan should keep it cool, not that it gets too hot anyway. Now I hear absolutely nothing from monitor, I have to get my ear real close to the back of it to hear slight humm from the noctua fan. Btw if you or anyone was to do this then just be aware that the +12V and GND is reversed on the monitor PCB connector. 1st is 12V, 2nd is GND, then as usual tach and pwm, but originally fans are 1st GND then 2nd +12V, then usual tach and pwm.

Manufacturers make the screens matte for work environments in the chance a company will bulk buy them. Matte screens are trash for typical home lighting but for fluorescent office or business overhead lighting its perfect because the lighting is more indirect and the coating isn't smearing a single hot spot. With gloss, you'll get more mirror reflections from the indirect lighting but its perfect for typical home lighting since it doesn't have to diffuse

Honestly i disagree, i just bought the Asus PG27AQDM and many comments discussed how awful the matte coating is, but i don't get what all the fuss is about, it looks exactly like every monitor i've ever used, i've always HATED glossy coatings, all it takes is a small amount of light and i can see my reflection perfectly, matte coated displays require direct light shining on them for it to have any negative effects and honestly who buys an OLED and sticks it in direct sunlight? not only is it bad for the monitor but it's bad for viewing your content, whether it's glossy or matte. I'm sat in a gaming room with my blind permanently closed, lights are on and there is ZERO reflections on my screen, zero glow, no reflections. If i had glossy i'd be able to my own face.

Complains about lack of contrast on lg monitors due to matte finish and doesn’t mention raised blacks on qd oled’s with a little bit of ambient light. Color volume is more of a marketing term than a real world concern. I’ve got a monitor with one of the highest color volumes out there sitting next to my lg oled and the colors are hard to tell apart. The matte finish is subjective. Some people like optimumtech and myself don’t really see much of a difference. At the end of the day though, if new tech is just around the corner it’s always a good idea to see what’s coming.

Are you a Samsung shill or what? This is such a biased view, spamming YT all over the place with “don’t buy LG OLED” BS videos. Matte vs glossy finish is largely a question of preference but yes, I also prefer glossy. HOWEVER, the LG OLED TV coating (e.g. C2/C3) craps all over the QD OLED one which kills the blacks in all but dim rooms and looks awful with its strong purple tint. It’s not really glossy by the way, quite a few people scrub the AG coating off their screens. The 2nd gen panel hasn’t improved that. As for the color volume, LG panels look way more natural in many cases, they are far from being washed out or anything. You could even argue QD OLED tends to be way oversaturated in many applications. Burn-in vulnerability is also a thing, do some research. Rant over, I still enjoy some of your content 😁

I just paid $600 for an Alienware 34 QD OLED screen, the 165Hz model. It was a second-hand purchase, but it came brand new with all the factory protective layers intact (which makes me wonder if it was possibly stolen). Let's see what I got for my money: a glossy screen, 165Hz refresh rate, no input lag, no ghosting, HDR1000, the best viewing angles I've ever seen. I can see the exact same image quality from the sides of the panel, which is incredible. On top of that, the curvature is just right for me to comfortably see the corners of the screen (I switched from a flat 34-inch ultrawide with the same resolution). Despite being 3440 x 1440, it feels sharper than my similar Philips LCD with the same pixel density, likely due to its quantum dot pixel arrangement. As a graphic designer, I scrutinize details, and this screen impresses me. Now, onto the text fringing issue-initially, I noticed some fringing, particularly magenta, while reading white text on a black background. However, after three days, I can't detect it anymore. It seems the eyes perceive it, but the brain deems it unimportant and stops highlighting the small fringe. This screen works perfectly well for writing, graphic design, and video work. Don't let anyone scare you with concerns about this issue; it's really a non-issue. As for the 'Standard' picture profile, it's not truly flat and balanced. It appears warm and oversaturated. Surprisingly, the 'Cool' picture profile is the one that delivers good results. The 'Cool' profile closely matches the white balance of my calibrated LCD screen, which is quite remarkable. I plan to calibrate this display today to see if it's even necessary. When I work in Photoshop and examine my previous projects, I'm amazed by how well the skin tones look now. The OLED colors are a sight to behold, and the contrast consistently wows me, especially when playing games. Transitioning from a 60Hz panel to a 165Hz one with no input lag and no ghosting feels like I'm peering through a window. Honestly, I can't find anything negative to say about this monitor, except that I'm already getting tired of that Pixel Refresh time warning. I typically postpone it until I finish my work and then allow the monitor to refresh at least twice a day for my peace of mind.

OK, so I waited last year because something better was 'just around the corner'. Then in just a few weeks, I should be able to get say an LG C3 42" TV on sale at a really good price. And NOW you're telling me to wait again? Uh, NO! I don't care if there's a bit of color banding and if text isn't up to 4:4:4 Chroma subsampling standards. I want it for the contrast ratio and the motion handling. Plus I don't have, and cannot afford, a PC that can drive most games past 120hz. So I see no point in perenially waiting for the next "AWESOME Technology" to materialize. Now I did leave you a like. I'm not angry with you at all. I am a bit envious, because you've been able to gain the experience which allows you to make the statements you do here. Man, not to hate, this guys got denied by LG/ASUS/AMD, most of his views are probably 80% clickbait, there are only two panel manufacturers Samsung and LG, Samsung gen 2 panel wont do shit, their quality control is trash, G7, G9 had massive quality control on panels and firmware, reddit was crying and rtings gave the G series a 6.5/10 for a premium gaming monitor, now they fixed the bugs but still have problems, if LG so bad, that's why BenQ uses LG panels and are probably the best gaming Esport monitor, Asus has been on top for YEARS and has LG panel, Corsair, Gygabite, Pixio, Acer, Aoc all use LG panel, Dell only gaming sector is Alienware, don't see much in the scene prolly due to being overpriced premium for subpar quality, not gone even mention MSI, fuck outa here with that VA "gaming" shit. QDOled are ment for TV not for gaming and media/productivity, GL reading something on QDoled, Woled is a pain already and is easier on the eyes, plus QDoled are more sensible for burn-in due to pixel layout(check the TVs comparasion in burnin). I do agree with the gossy finish, but not all of us have a dark room, and any light coming in the room, you'll hate the glossy finish reflections, even deskled, keyboard reflects it.

Are the second-gen QD-OLED panels from Samsung using the improvements from the PH-OLED technology? As I've read, while using higher brightness on current OLED panels over time, like watching a hockey match, the brightness dims quite a bit after only a few minutes. With the upcoming PH-OLED technology which replaces the materials of the blue subpixels to a longer lasting variant of blue, I suppose the auto dimming function on OLED panels are no longer neccessary, or am I wrong here?

Nope, going to have to wait until early 2025 for PHOLED Tvs, and then probably some more time until it trickles down to monitors. But who knows, maybe Samsung will go full PHOLED on everything since they'd have the most benefit with their blue powered QD-OLED technology. PHOLED will be a big step in higher brightness + longevity. Also look into plasmonic PHOLED, which will be an incredible leap again some years down the line (all being developed by UDC - universal display corporation).

I bought an lg e9 in 2020. They lied about it being g-sync and the tv came with vertical banding, a manfacturer defect that has been highly reported for the tvs and oled in general. I told them dark scenes in my video games look like im inside a circus tent and they said video games dont count as content. So i had to watch stupid movies off netflix to document the problem. I showed them clear scenes from 3 different movies and they sent a guy with a camera to document it. He was not a technition, had no experience with the problem i was experiencing, and took one picture and wouldn't even let me see it. The delivery was 3 months late, i bought it off newegg, and they wouldnt let me cancel the order despite being over a month past the claimed delivery date. It was supposed to be delivered by a team of two people who would take care with it and help me with setup. It was literally dropped onto my driveway by a single ups guy, no dolly, no notice, and then he drove off as soon as possible. The box had a hole in the corner like somebody dropped or kicked it. The display also had 3 dead pixles in a line and they didnt care as 3 out of a million isnt a lot. Paying about 2k for this, i dont thnk i will ever buy LG anything agian in my life and STRONLGY SUGGEST you dont too. For heaven's sake, the glossy vs. matte screen issue has probably been debated since 2003, when Sony started producing laptops with glossy screens and released the SDM-HS73 for desktops, personally I prefer glossy but it is a question strictly linked to the type of use. Unfortunately Samsung has the bad habit of testing its new products on customers, as in the case of QD-OLED which has proven to be less resistant to burn in than WOLED despite the premises. The characteristics of the QD-OLED are still impressive, the annoying thing is that it lacks a 16:9 aspect ratio above 40", many users, in addition to playing, would also like to work or perhaps watch a video on a large non-curved screen.

I'd like to get a larger screen for when I want to watch something with friends further back on the couch but small enough to work on up close as well on my desk so that's why I'm gravitating towards the c3 oled lg. never seen one in person but if it's anything like the c1 (I've heard the evo focuses on brightness?). plus I only game on ps5 so I only need 120 hz at 4k right now because that's the max the ps5 can do I've read. being able to use it as a monitor for my MacBook at a higher hz might be interesting though but not necessary. if anyone has any recommendations or tips I'd really appreciate it. thanks.

1080p just isnt the right market. People buying OLED spend a lot of money and someone spending a lot of money just isnt gonna buy a 1080p display 9/10 situations in 2023 so its probably just not worth it for them to develop such a display. 1080p nowadays for expensive monitors is really only used in extremely fast TN/IPS displays like 520hz monitors because apparently, this niche market is worth it for manufacturers
@ImakeTanks
@ImakeTanks 10 месяцев назад
@@JanM2 1080p is the gold standard for all competitive gaming, at 20-24 inches 1080p has a super high pixel density which is way more than enough to show all detail. All pro gamers use 1080p 23-24 inch displays. If they made 1080p 20-24 inch OLED gaming displays they would outsell 2k-4k gaming monitors, only casual fool around gamers use 2-4k gaming displays. If the computer monitor industry doesn't offer 1080p OLED gaming monitors it's because they want people to spend 10,000 dollars on new computer parts to be able to power run 2-4k+ monitors at high refresh rates. It's funny because they make tiny OLED displays with all different resolution sizes for other markets, there are 1 inch OLED displays out there. The bottom line is the entire computer technology display industry is run by mafia criminals that don't care about people's safety health and what's best for people. We shouldn't even be using digital pixel display technologies, there are other way better display technologies out there that require 1/10 the computing power, but then they wouldn't be dictating the computer display sells market like they do turning everyone into zombie slave impulsive consumer robots every new tech season release.

Your name should absolutely not be The Display Guy. You are showing such an unbelievably massive bias that I wouldn't trust anything you say. There's plenty of things you said to take issue with, but a few in particular really grind my gears: your ridiculous hatred of a matte finish, blindly recommending anything QD-OLED over anything W-OLED, and recommending holding out for 360 hz. While it's a known factor that matte finishes do cause slightly less vibrance and clarity, it is genuinely only slightly. The sheer notion that it destroys the image quality makes you sound like a massive snob. For the vast majority of people, it will not only be a non-issue, but may actually be the superior option because you don't have to deal with reflections. Initially QD-OLED was far superior in brightness, but the gap has very much narrowed, and W-OLED monitors as a whole tend to run cheaper than QD-OLED, and as you pointed out, anyone wanting a matte finish essentially has to go with W-OLED. The difference in color is so insignificant that you would only ever actually notice it if you put the two next to each other, which the vast majority of people would simply never do. In short, while QD-OLED is technically brighter and more vibrant, if someone went with a W-OLED instead, they'd never feel like they were missing out. 360 Hz is not relevant to 99.9% of people. Even if they can perceive the difference between 240 and 360, unless they're an e-sports caliber player, they're not going to be taking advantage of it. For most people 120 is plenty, and even for people who play more competitive games, anything over 240 offers nothing but diminishing returns. Constantly waiting for the next big release just means you're constantly waiting. Just because they release a bigger and better monitor doesn't mean the previous one is no longer good. I sincerely hope all of your videos aren't this ignorant.
