As I been saying for like 20 years to everyone, eat a hefty real cheeseburger & do some push-ups & you wouldn’t need this light weight crap that doesn’t last haha! 🤣😉 That is crazy though how easy that happened. I see a few people running them & kinda hard on them but maybe that was just a flaw pair? Like you said, no way that’s one piece of machined out ti or it wouldn’t of done that. 3 pieces & that spindle pressed into that one arm probably. Crazy! Good video for people to see & the company that makes them. Glad you didn’t get hurt homie! 🙏🏽

That’s what I’m saying! Honestly the best weight saver on a bike is switching to folding tires. All of them except for the KHE ones hold air and resist flats just fine. Hell, I’ve been running some alienation tires that Mike gave me for no joke probably 8 years, maybe 10.

I get what you guys are talking about, English my 2nd language btw but as i read it lawfully RNC has been correct probably about machined out of one block, that says nothing about the spindle. But knowing a good producer this should be solved/warranty for all after inviting all cranksetss sold back in for Safety 1st ❤️ My RNC ti driver lasted at least 15 years so i guess and hope its just this one pair 🙂

I blew my shoulder and have a disintegrating spine. Kinda need the light bike. However you can get to like 22 pounds with brakes pegs and all chromo reliable stuff. That's light enough. I am however building something quite a bit lighter then that to prove a point however.
@StevelandCleamer
@StevelandCleamer 2 года назад
@@bmxriderforlife1234 I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to the shoulder A/C separation on my left one a couple years back and it’s still awful. I have pretty much all chromo parts, nothing specifically to cut weight except the tires and my bike weighs in at 19-20lbs
@bmxriderforlife1234

@@StevelandCleamer yeah that's what I mean though. Everybody can be a weight weenie without even really worrying these days. 22 pounds gets me a coaster a gyro huge ass bars. My 57mm stem. 3 chromo pegs. Metal pedals and a comfy seat with a longer post if I decide I wanna crank it up. And I didn't even try to get it stupid light. It's a street proof build I could huck down 22s if my body was up for it but lol. I am however going to beat the lightest freestyle bike ever built and do it smarter for less money and have a stronger bike then the current lightest. Gyro and no pegs 12 to 13 pound range. With pegs 13 to 14. With a coaster on it as well. Was gonna use the rnc 3 piece to cranks for the build but need to see of they still offer those or just these. Ti grim reaper next time Eastern has a batch along with their ti bars. Custom ti fork. Rnc ti cranks or a profile ti 22mm spindle with alloy bolts on MacNeil arms. Few other interesting part choices. But mostly cause my issues are degenerative and eventually leave me crippled. Lighter bike is better for bad days and probably in general. Plus Ricky Veronica who has the current record kinda built his bike dumb. I could save weight off his build and money cost using parts from the era he built it when certain lighter shit was more readily available and better choices. And kinda needlessly spent money and drilled holes in every part so lol.

Sucks about your cranks, but at least you didn't discover the issue while whipping a 10 stair, Lol. I went to the website and they are still selling them, but the ones in the picture on the site do not have the visible seam where the spline meets the left crank arm like yours in the video do. The ones on the website has what appears to be some light puddling as though they have been lightly Tig welder. I have been riding for 31 years and have watched at least a thousand you tube videos and can honestly say I have never subscribed to one. Until now!!! I get how some people could find "crank arms are machined from a solid bar" a bit misleading. Though the spindle and arm are two seperate entities. As a machinist by trade, that would be ridiculously hard and nearly impossible for a small machine shop to machine the spindle and arm out of one bar. (This would also double the price at least) The arms would done on a mill and the spindle would be done a lathe most likely.
@dylvb1471
@dylvb1471 2 года назад
Im glad im not the only one who thought this. It is a bit misleading for people who are not involved in that kind of industry , who wouldnt know its near impossible to machine from one solid bar. However , that being said, for the price of the cranks, they should not have this issue at all, they should have used some sort of spline system to prevent the crank shifting once the spindle is pressed in.

We run the older RNC cranks on our prototype electric bmx and LOVE them. They're exactly as advertised. Granted, Ryan was terse in his communication as he was with you, and also missed his lead time by months. That does make for a poor buying experience. But the product itself was bulletproof. So we just chalked it up to a small company struggling to handle high demand. That's something we 100% understand. The kind of mechanical failure you experienced, though, is genuinely terrifying and unacceptable. It's the kind of issue that could get someone seriously injured at just about any speed - the drastically higher speeds we achieve only makes the issue that much more worrying. One of the advantages of purchasing a bespoke, handmade product like the RNC cranks is supposed to be an increased attention to detail. The fact that such a huge mistake slipped through is indication that it's not just a customer relations problem at RNC. We've got a pair of these superlights allegedly being made for us now (again, Ryan missed his stated lead time by months). We'll definitely be taking a close look and putting them to the test in a controlled environment.

When shit like this happens, it sucks. Though this happens to all companies. I had this happen to SRAM OEM components on a new bike. I waited 7 weeks for warranty turn around. Obviously be pissed, choose where you spend your money, but remember this is a small company. A small company that makes and distributes it's own components. In AU, average hourly rate for a CNC mill is $150 plus. RNC is charging 700ish? For around 8 hours of machine time. Not to mention titanium is hard on tooling. This guy is working night and day to break even and he's keeping manufacturing in the country. If I had the cash to spare I would be willing to purchase and wait for the warranty. 👍

Having seen the atrocious manners of the seller in his text messages I didn't want to say this but it says ' *Crank arms* are machined from a solid bar of titanium' - doesn't say crank arm *and* spindle. Also it states that just the spindle is heat treated which suggests it's a separate part. That being said, they still shouldn't fail like these have.

@c-3041 2 года назад
The two piece design with no welds does make it seem like it would just be one piece of machined titanium, but the description does separate the two saying “crank arms are machined from a solid bar” and “heat treated titanium spindle” The wording is misleading though, especially since they don’t say how they are put together. They just say (no welds) which to them means that each arm is one piece rather than most cranks that weld on the piece for the pedal to screw in and the piece for the spindle.

The description clearly says "crank armS (implying there's an axle somewhere) are machined from one block of Ti (no welds, unlike, you know, regular crankarms) making them unbelievably strong and stiff." i see no deception there. Then it says 'heat treated ti spindle' again implying you now have Ti 'arms' and heat treated Ti 'spindle'. Where they go wrong is saying it's a *2-piece design.* It's clearly not from an 'exploded view' perspective but from an intended usecase perspective, it is. It's designed and intended to function as a 2 piece crank. The design doesn't try to hide that the axle is pressed in. Look at the outside; you can clearly see a round groove where the axle sits flush with the crank arm. You can also see the spindle looking like steel almost, because of the heat treating it's probably not the same shade of Ti that your crankarms have. At least from what i can tell. I bet they just fucked up on the tolerance for what's likely a non-indexed interference fit. They may be happy to fix it for ya. Hey i'd be pissed too. But i would've been wary before i bought them. Their cranks from 15 years ago were much better from a design standpoint (splined is an instant fail in my book)

So just to make this clear. When he says they are Crank arms are machined from a solid bar of 6al-4v titanium (No welds) making them unbelievably strong and stiff. That just means the crank arm themselves. The spindle is separate and is pressed in. There is no possible way to make the spindle and the arm out of once piece. No cranks on any level are one piece they are all 2 pieces usually pressed then welded. Did you contact rnc and discuss this with him. I believe for extra measure he is welding the 2 piece the spindle and the arm together. Just the arms are machined complete.

Looks like the spindle is pressed into the crank arm. The crank arm may be machined from one solid titanium blank. It looks like it doesn’t say that the crank arm and spindle are one piece. Their description is pretty vague. Probably done on purpose, but who knows. The arm itself is one piece but the non drive side is probably a taper with a keyway or a spline the seats on the shoulder of the spindle on the nondrive side. I'd be pissed too, I know those aren't cheap. QC is so often over looked in manufacturing and it is the most important step. Would be interested to hear what the actual issue is.

Use a marker mark both pieces then do the jump test and see if the lines still meet or dont line up thats how you could tell if the “1 piece” side is moving like that

These arent welded like they got skipped. The pictures I've seen of the 2 piece cranks have all been welded at the outside of the spindle to the crank arm.

Looks like they tried a press fit design or an interference fit where you put on piece in the freezer (spindle) and the other in an oven (crank arm) than assemble together As shown looks like it can handle shock loads

EDIT: Just checked their sight, and as of now, the photos that they are showing show the crank arms being welded to the spindle, so obviously this happened to a few people. As fro how you dealt with this, I think it is 100% justifiable. If you had sent one message or no message and then just made a video talking about how they suck / the company sucks, that would be different, but you have a explanation for everything you did AND you waited 3 months for a part that was promised in weeks. That is something that a company should be called out on, that's something that the rest of us should know. Respect. The arms are made of a solid billet of titanium, and you keep saying "cast" but these are machined. The spindle is a separate part from the cranks. I haven't finished watching the video, but I don't see any lie so far... just a misunderstanding. My guess is that the spindle is press fit and that they just didn't get it right (maybe on this set of maybe on a batch) Obviously the cranks are junk and the purchase experience is unacceptable... If these were made with the spindle as part of the arm, from one solid billet, these things would be thousands of dollars instead of $500. Not trying to say that they aren't pricy or that they don't owe you a useable set of cranks... just that it is surprising that they can make TI cranks for that little money knowing the price of materials and what it takes to machine titanium. I bought some RNC stuff way back in the early 2000's. I still have the cranks and sprocket. They were cool to have BUT they weren't well thought out. It didn't seem like they had any / much research and development as there were several issues and the aluminum they used was too soft. Press fit is when the actually make the hole a few thousandths of an inch smaller than the spindle. They then usually heat one part and cool the other, push them together and once they reach the same temp they are locked together really well. This process is used for a LOT of stuff and works extremely well when the dimensions are correct.

@JSparrowist
@JSparrowist 2 года назад
I am willing to bet that it’s not one piece, but rather temperature press fit. Heat one piece and cool the other and press them together and as they acclimate to normal temperature they essentially lock together very tightly. Seems that’s what they did and the process is flawed because the supposed one piece is slipping.

Anyone have any feedback or advice re: the alu cranks they do? Design of both those and the heavier Ti ones look a lot safer - neither are milled all the way through to leave holes.
