DO NOT go to medical school if you identify with these 4 factors. Med school is a long and arduous journey. If you're going to become a doctor because your parents want you to, if you don't like working with people, if you aren't ready to commit to the hard work for years on end, or if medicine isn't your main focus, then reconsider your decision.

Years later, when I was on the faculty of my old Med School one of my "duties" was to be on the Admissions committee. One of the very first questions I would ask the candidate was whether or not there were medical people in their families. If there were I always probed a little deeper and on occasion would discover your #1 reason not to be a Physician. Many of those candidates would express relief that they had been "found out" and the interview would shift its focus to what it was that the individual really wanted to do with their life. The one I remember most was a young man whose whole family were Physicians. Mother, Father, 2 Brothers and 1 Sister. Talk about pressure! Within a few minutes of the start of the interview It was pretty obvious that this guys heart was not into medicine. So I asked him point blank what it was that he really wanted to do. His answer... He wanted to be an Art Historian. So the rest of the interview was basically how to confront his parents with his decision and how he could best pursue his goal. Several months later I got a letter from this young man. He was enrolled in a Masters program in Art History at one of the better Universities on the East coast. His goal was to eventually get a PhD in the subject. I hope he made it.

If only even 25% of interviewers were even remotely like you the world would be a better place. Most of them would pry and find out medicine wasn't their passion, then proceed to berate them for wasting their time. The superiority complex of some of these faculty members is just horrendous. Glad you were able to help that gentleman.

At the same time this type of question is classist. So many students who don’t have physicians in their family (first generation college, poor, disabled folks, etc) are discouraged from following this career…and often times they’re the ones who are most needed in this field instead of people who are disconnected from the realities of patients
@GuillermoFretuchino637
@GuillermoFretuchino637 Год назад
Ive been threatened by patients, had them spit at me, been called unimaginable names and told they'd be "waiting outside for me" many times. After nearly 20 years of it, I'm done just accepting it. Professionalism is a must but patients ARE NOT customers. They are there to see us. Patient abuse and poor behavior can't be tolerated anymore.

I cried while reading the comments. Thank you to those people who left those uplifting comments! I'm still in my 3rd year of pre-med and I am not doing so well. It's so hard to learn in an online setting. It was nice to see people saying that high grades do not determine a good clinician. Like I said, I am currently not doing well in my third year of pre-med, I almost failed 4 subjects last semester and now I feel that I'm about to fail another set of subjects. Just the thought that these schools that I plan to apply for med might think to why the heck would I even bother applying to med school with those grades. Let's also take into consideration how in my country grades are important and they treat you based on what your grades are. It really scares me.

May I ask what your sleeping routines are like? One of the biggest determiners of your success at school is how well you're maintaining your body's basic needs. Try to get between 7-8 hours of sleep every night, and drink many many bottles of water throughout the day. Reading comprehension goes down by a whopping 50% while you're even a little bit dehydrated, and drinking also improves alertness because it activates your metabolism, kick-starting movement within your body.

@@Hailey-ui6ni sometimes we think we can't do it and we are not good enough for it, but just do your very best💪 and one day we will just found ourselves nailing it. We think we can't do it, but we can absolutely smash it. Besides, you're still young (but I'm younger 🤭). We still have much time to learn and improve ourselves. We better start studying now. Try writing the things that we are not good at (ex: we sucks at writing a reflection about what you learn today, or maybe we sucks at remembering or writing an essay). Then we focus on how we can be better at those things. Create a plan about dealing with your weaknesses. Change your habit and routine. I personally believe that everybody can be smart, but we have to work really hard for it (unlike geniuses does LOL). But it's all depends on how much we badly want to be the best version of us. Motivate yourself and never loss that motivation. Keep trying to be better every single day. Today, we should be better than yesterday. We should learn something today. Today, we must do something that is worthwhile. What we are doing now should be something we can be proud of in the future. Imagine your future self saying, "thank you for working really hard" isn't it amazing?🤩 By the way, please excuse my grammar😅. English is not my first language. I'm still learning 👍

I was in a class that focused on Chemistry in my highschool, so entering a med school seemed to be an obvious route. Study hard to pass the exams to get in, then spend 7 years studying. The path was clear. Many of my seniors went that way. But I knew it wasn't for me. I lack the mental toughness to survive in med school. Even if somehow I manage to graduate, I won't be able to bear the stress of working as a doctor. I like jobs that allow me to have flexible hours of working and relaxing, and a mistake, albeit serious, won't kill anyone.

My heart was always set in psychology. But it wasn't until going through a spinal cord injury relearning everything neck down and going through intense self pursuit to get better physically mentally and spiritually that I was called to be a Neuropsychiatrist. Watching my mom lose her mental sense dying from cancer really pushed me to want to be more than a psychologist as I was telling the nurses the problems that were coming simply by listening and they didn't believe me until it happened. I even warned them she would die when she did and they where mind blown because I lived in a different state. No my mom taught me to be my own health advocate so in turn I studied health because of my injury. I asked God if he truly wanted me to do it then I'll be in college. Well I'll be getting ready to apply to medical school and I graduate with a bachelor's soon. The world needs people like me as doctors who've actually lived through much pain and treatments for the last twenty years. I'm determined because I know what's needed especially for women of my ethnicity! I just know it's my mission to heal. That's it that's all and if I can't heal then at least I can be there for them as they go through.

Becoming a doctor because you want to stop cancer is like becoming a defense lawyer because you want to get innocent people committed, and you end up spending your career begging judges for lenience, and negotiating with prosecutors to get a slightly easier sentence for your client when he pleads guilty.

Thats a noble reason to want to go into medicine. Many of the best doctors, and discoveries and advancements in medicine came from someone with a personal reason for their pursuit. Also, with that pre-med undergraduate degree, you can take it into a research or scientic graduate degree of some kind. There are many outside of actual medical school. Having written that, I think its very smart that you're being honest with yourself now. I know your comment is roughly a year old now, and you've probably made some new decisions, but regardless, there IS a big difference often from the stereotype of a career vs. the reality of the day to day. My advice to anyone in an undergraduate point would be to seek out shadow opportunities to get an ACCURATE view of the field you're considering IF you're having doubts. Is it intuition trying to guide you elsewhere? - Or is it simply fear? Shadowing can illuminate a lot better than any class or professor in the bubble of an undergrad program. Also, you could look at other science-related careers and seek out people in those fields to talk with or shadow. That should make it all clear quickly which path is right for you. There is a lot to do in the medical field that isn't in a clinical/patient capacity with crazy stress. If you see this, and don't mind, I'd like to hear what you have decided! I'm a RN myself, btw!

I’ve wanted to be a psychiatrist for years now; I think the only thing I would struggle with is being patient with people. I really do love helping people on their mental health journeys, not enough to be a psychologist per se, but enough to be a psychiatrist. I’ve always been highly interested in science as well, and since psychiatry is the more science oriented part of mental health, I want to do it. I want to give people medicine and the grounds to seek their own personal help, because I’ve struggled with a rare mental disorder for a long time now. I want to give people the help that I didn’t get, and help children and adults alike seek comfort within themselves and heal while also studying how the medicine itself works and showing them. I’m a hard worker as it is, and I think I could handle working many hours if I’m doing something I love. The only issue is that I’ve never been a very empathy driven person; in work environments I would rather work alone, and I don’t have a need to be social at all. I love working with peers who will be competent, but that’s the issue… not even my co-workers might be competent. I think over time I’ll have to learn to work with people who need to work harder. Of course I’ll have the patients to myself mostly in our meetings, I just hope that I go through school and my career with people who love what we do just as much as me.

You just have to be studying topics that you love and interest you - makes it far easier to learn and succeed...(unlike my strong dislike for chemistry in school.) Don't let a few bad grades in school demotivate you (anyone reading), you will succeed if you keep trying and pour your heart into it.

I strongly agree with all the statements. I always dreamt of being a doctor since childhood but when I started studying medicine I got really frustrated. Because I realised I like critical thinking and creating more than memorising all those information. It was really mentally struggling for me. If you are allergic to all those memorisation for long hours its definitely not for you. I would still love to be a doctor, but unfortunately all that reading is not for me. I’m in med school and I’ve never seen a group of ppl more willing to help others. With all due respect, I think you’re just seeing things from a patient’s perspective and aren’t taking into account how many hours the physician has worked or what their situation in life may be. I know that for interns, just organizing medical histories, making sure everything is legally in order, and giving information about every patient you see to every physician they need is extremely taxing. They may not be underpaid but they’re definitely overworked.

This is my first time watching this since getting in to med school. For sure I thought that I was allergic to hard work, but I really appreciate the challenge. Probably the best part about med school is if you really love learning then studying can actually be a lot of fun! This is coming from someone who "didn't need to study" in high school and college. Such a concept doesn't exist in med school, so students who work hard for their grade, you may have more aptitude than your peers where everything came naturally.

Facts - High grades are nothing in determining a good clinician - As a doctor or nurse, dealing with patients’ families is so frustrating than dealing with patients - Your people’s person skills are the best friend in healthcare - Doctors aren’t super smart, they’ve passion and dedication. Anyone can become a doctor if you’re dedicated and passionate - What makes it challenging is the business culture in the healthcare settings, there’s rampant bullying and it’s so intentional

Ex-doctor here. It's funny that I almost hit all 4 points (I don't HATE people but I can't deal with stressed out people or frustrated/angry people, and patients often act this way when they are in pain) For those of you who are wondering/nervous about medical school, once you get admitted to the programme medical school is really the easy part. In reality you don't need to know everything to be a good doctor, you need great people skills and common sense, the rest is experience. The hard part is actually working! The physical stress of long hours, the mental stress of working under pressure with lives on the line, the psychological stress of tough decisions, and mulling over potential mistakes late at night instead of sleeping for your early shift tomorrow... It's hard work unless you feel the passion and the calling for it.

I feel #3 so hard. My dumbest decision in life was accepting that med school scholarship just cause it was a nice-sounding profession. I thought "high school was easy as hell, how hard can med school be". I was wrong. and forgive me for saying but med school "dumbs" you down. I forgot so many stuff I was able to do back then, especially in maths. Math and physics were my favorite subjects given that they require more critical thinking than they do memorization. Biology was my least favorite. Med school really was a dumb decision on my part. Now I'm 1 year off graduation and board exam and I'm so scared. I don't know how I've survived for so long in this and I definitely don't know how I'm gonna pass that board exam. Being the "genius" child from kindergarten to high school, everyone is expecting me to pass. They don't know how different med school is from what I was used to, from what I've aced. They don't understand and it's not their fault, because I never would've known too if I never studied medicine. I'm so scared. I'm sorry for rambling, I was just planning to leave a short funny comment but the words just spilled and anyone I tell my fears to just tells me "don't worry, you'll pass, you're smart" but that's not what I need. Edit: HEY EVERYONE! i waited til this day before I made an edit. I took my first boards certification exam to be licensed as a physician last October and I got my results this November. I passed! I'm a board certified physician now. I still stand by everything I've said previously, but for everyone like me who has no way out too, take me as your example and proof that you can do it. Now, I'm going to rest for a few months before I decide whether to take residency or locum work. I turned 23 last August. This rest is going to be my late gift to myself. Good luck everybody! Edit2: also, tysm for everyone who has added their suggestions, wished me well, empathized, etc. Tysm :)) i come back to this comment many times hoping I can pass on my first try so i could reply earlier to you guys, and I did :)

I don't know if I would call it parental pressure but it's like I was never open to many options. I'm good at studies, I've always scored the highest in all my exams. Now I'm in last year of premed and at the end of this year, I will give the entrance exam to a medical university. The thing is, I never really knew what I wanted to do. I never had a clear idea about my career. I've always done what my parents told me because I couldn't make up my mind about what I want. They carved out the path for me before I could decide it for myself. So, I just decided to follow it. It's not bad, I can study and I like studying. I like getting new information about stuff, but not going to lie, sometimes it gets too much for me. I start to think what it would be like if I had more options to choose from, maybe I would've gone into Arts. Painting is my hobby, but I don't do it much anymore. It's like I want to do it but the stress of studying overcomes the feeling of freedom I get for a little while. Now, I want to go to a medical university because I can see a chance of me getting in. I want to achieve the best. I want to be successful. My family, friends and teachers encourage me and have great expectations from me. I've realised that I work on my own accord and I know when and how I want to do something. If anyone pushes me, I just get more lazy and don't do anything because of extra stress I get from their words. BTW, both of my parents are doctors 😅

My mom got stroke , and we took so many scans and her reports were disturbing as hell , and I forced myself to do it. But I don't like studying a bit. @xxyyzz ok then. Well in Pakistan, i had 2 go thru 2 years of colg ( In Pakistan grade 11 and 12 are actually called college and school is till grade 10) I had a general pre med course where i studied physics bio and chemistry and well I'd rather say I crammed it cuz the exam that you give is based on cramming pricess and not concepts. So pre med was relatively easy until I had to start preparing for Mcat. My bio concepts were all good but i had to do physics chemistry all over again for about 11 months and then i gave the test which was difficult cuz it was a concept based test and a significant part of it also had English grammar section
@icosahedral8197
@icosahedral8197 3 года назад
But I still passed the test with a relatively high score as compared to some of my cousins. But unfortunately that year the merit for gov medical colgs skyrocketed and I wasn't able to get into a govt institution but thw no. 2 private med school of the country ( couldn't afford no. 1 😅) Anyways now I am doing a standard undergrad degree MBBs 5 years. I have professional exam next month and it wasn't as difficult only if u don't leave stuff for tomorrow and have your concepts clear. So the mbbs will take 5 years after which I have to serve 1 year as a house officer and then a year in the army.

I am ALL OF THAT, and I knew that all along before applying, but due to severe family pressure and me being ignorant kid at 18, I applied for med school. From the first year I was depressed but not severe enough to rage or quit, and I was still getting through grades easily, until I finally graduated with very little feeling of self accomplishment and still feeling empty and depressed. Then I started residency, oh boy, this was the deal breaker for me. I got so depressed and agitated that I kept thinking about suicide ON A DAILY BASIS, I cried when I was on call in the hospital ward working on a shift of 30+ hours of non sleep, and when I finally decided to quit, my parents and MY FREAKING BROTHER had a fight with me.. saying that I'm a failure for quitting and why did I not quit earlier. But being a more assertive and mature person now, I decided to not listen to them and just decide what I feel best for me, so I'm gonna go back to school and study CS, after all, I was always a computer person and I always dreamed of being a programmer. AND NOTHING CAN STOP ME NOW

I'm a psychiatrist, and I agree with most of your points but with ONE main caveat. Most people who chose to enter med school are just children and they barely know themselves. They think they're not allergic to hard work but they later learn they are. They think they're not being influenced by parental pressure but later learn they are. They think they do not dislike people but later learn they do. And they think they could make medicine their only career but later learn they have other interests. Like you said, doctors are a very special breed of people, and most of them have similiar personality traits or flaws. First, doctors tend to be a little narcissistic. They might not want to admit this but they almost always are, and there's nothing wrong with it. A little bit of narcissism is what's needed to sustain a long and arduous career. You need to be honest that you are in it for the status, for the hierarchy, for the money, and most importantly, for the need to feel WANTED. If you cannot admit this to yourself, if you think medicine is a charity and it shouldn't come with any reward whatsoever, you will eventually find yourself very disillusioned. Even doctors without borders do it for the adventure and they still get paid. If you LOVE to feel WANTED, then medicine is your career, because you are always WANTED and your pager will remind you of that every day. But if you're the type that wants to be free then it might be a little harder although it isn't a deal breaker. Second, doctors tend to be perfectionistic in what they do. Perfectionists generally think they are not good enough and thus they work very hard to prove themselves or they beat themselves up very hard. If you're a perfectionist, then medicine is your career. This is more important than the need to feel wanted because a sloppy doctor will not have a successful medical career. Finally, doctors tend to be moralistic and highly conscientious. If you're the type that likes to follow rules, morals, and ethics, then medicine is the right career for you. This is the most important trait a doctor must have. If you're an anarchist who couldn't obey authorities, you can't be a doctor. Every doctor is governed by a strict moral code and they break that code at their own peril. There is little room for innovation in medicine unless you're doing research. Medicine today is based on evidence and innovation can only be done with lab rats to start with and not with patients. If you don't like this, you can be an entrepreneur instead. The traits I mentioned ties in with the video. People who conform to parental wishes aren't usually narcissistic enough to sustain a career in medicine. People who are allergic to hard work aren't perfectionistic or moralistic enough. People who have many other interests tend to be highly innovative and creative while medicine is boring and rule-bound. And people who hate dealing with people don't have a need to feel WANTED, in fact, they hated needy people. **EDIT (FUN FACT) ** Characters from Scrubs: 1. JD = Highly narcissistic, always want to feel wanted, won't make a good chief of medicine. 2. Turk = Less narcissistic but very competitive, ie. perfectionistic, good candidate for chief of surgery. 3. Cox = Highly moralistic, highly narcissistic (but won't admit it), and highly perfectionistic, perfect candidate for chief of medicine. 4. Elliot = Highly narcissistic, always want to feel wanted, perfect for JD. 5. Kelso = Highly moralistic and rule-bound, getting old, should retire. 6. The Todd = I don't know about this one, this one is a red herring, I've never seen a doctor like that. haha 7. The Hooch = is crazy 8. Doug = Okay, you don't want to be this guy, not only does he not have the need to feel wanted, he downright fears patients. Very low self-esteem, calls father immediately hoping to please his dad when he receives a simple compliment from Cox (as a joke), knows nothing about medicine because he didn't study (i.e. not moralistic or perfectionistic), and he is a danger to patients. **EDIT (FUN FACT no. 2)** Commenter request: *Question: "I know this is a dumb one but Dr. House fascinates me cause he didn't fit in most things you named, I know he is made up but there are doctors out there like that. Even I would rebel from the system numerous times if it were for some greater good. But I still would love to be a doctor, mostly want to be a psychiatrist and it's great that I found your comment here. Also, gotta ask, do those who are very narcissistic judge patients much more?"* First, it is important to note that Dr. House is a fictional character and a doctor of his calibre do not exist in real life. A doctor can usually specialise in one or maybe two medical subspecialities but Dr. House seems to know everything from medicine, to surgery, to pathology, to microbiology, to just about every damn thing there is to know of the human body. It's unrealistic. However... Although Dr. House's abilities probably aren't real, his personality traits do exist in real life. He is not dissimilar to Dr. Cox in Scrubs in that he is the 'ALPHA' (male) of the group and being the Alpha means everyone differs to him when making tough decisions. This can create a lot of stress and so House and Cox put up a front to distance themselves from others to avoid being overwhelmed. This is normal, even I do that sometimes with medical students and junior interns (sorry...). But the degree to which Dr. House does it is probably excessive to the point of attracting litigation and complaints and that's where he falters. If House was a real doctor, he would've received complaints from patients and staff alike due to his extremely poor bedside manners and so will Dr. Cox. It is important to note that patients are people too and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect (so do junior staff members). They may have unhealthy, unusual, and unsavoury habits but we are not to judge as doctors. But having said that, doctors have the freedom to choose who to treat and who to refuse treatment based on their moral/religious beliefs. But this does not give them the right to berate patients. The character arc for Dr. Cox over the 7 seasons of scrubs is about how he learns to open up to JD, to Jordan, to Carla, and to his son, to reveal a gentler and more tender aspect of him. This is crucial to his character development because he learns to be less judgemental and more empathetic to his patients by accepting his own vulnerabilities. The core issue with narcissists like House and Cox is in learning how to be vulnerable because narcissists generally suffer from extremely poor self-esteem and that's why they bolster their ego by putting everybody down (i.e. Donald Trump). By being vulnerable, they are opening up themselves to those who would accept them unconditionally and that's how they repair and resolve any psychological damage done in the past. I don't know if House's character actually develops much in the way of empathy because I don't follow the show very much. But it would make sense that he does. Dr. Cox was a very different person in season 1 compared to when he's in season 7 (with some exceptions of course). This goes to show that there are more important things to being a doctor than just 'KNOWING EVERYTHING'. They don't teach you that in med school and you need very good mentors in real life to guide you. I am only who I am today because I had wonderful mentors to keep me centred (although some of them have retired). A doctor without a good mentor is bound to run into problems like these and they might end up being sued, disqualified, and having to see a shrink like me. Hope this had been educational. :)

Long story short, i basically got into the field and job i always wanted to. Now im already getting bored of it and its not even a year. So from me to you and anyone reading, even getting that job or into that field you always wanted to may still leave a sort of void. Its like what i heard once: "youre trying, youre working your whole life for it, theres something great on the other side, but when you get there, its like this is it!? and it doesnt feel much different". Looking at the general but bigger issue, i think its that we're always wanting something to fill the void, but sometimes we think the formula to that answer is a job when its really something about life.

Here it is a 5th year med student 🤚. I think this is a great video that everyone who wants to join med school should watch, but also, I can give you my personal advice. I'm not pretty good at memorizing and that was very hard for me at the beginning, also the social interaction wasn't my best point, some days I'm just tired of studying. But I can tell you that you can overcome all of this if YOU LIKE what you're learning. If you like biology, chemistry, if you are interested in learning how human body works, that will keep you in the career. So my advice is try to read some med book, med paper, something you can be interested into before trying to join the career. If you don't like these subjects, then don't even try it. Good luck to everyone!

@@susilamadaginal8080 Hi! Well, that depends on you. If you strongly hate the career i think it's better to quit, but if there are things you like and things you dislike, try to focus on the first ones. Medicine has a lot of field to work, so maybe you can get some specialization you like (there are administrative ones too)

I was one of the top students in school, excelling both in academics and co-curricular. That too with limited input. BUT med school has drained all my passion, critical analysis, drive to rank well in my class and outside. I feel my IQ has fell down by many scores due to all the cramming and vomiting all that in exams. I am a people person, or so I thought, but medicine brings me face to face with such jerks (patients or their families) who I can't even ignore or run away from! All those dreams and expectations from this profession seem like a mirage. Request to all those thinking about goin in this profession- DO NOT WATCH MEDICAL DRAMAS ON TV! You don't get to be 'Dr. House' everyday! 😂 I have not played the piano in the last few years, been out of touch with my painting and dancing nor have I read any new novel recently. Not that I dnt have free time but I don't have the tenacity for my hobbies after the drudgery and hard work in the wards. For medicine, you have to love it wholeheartedly and more than anything else or else attending emergencies at 2 in the morning won't be easy for u. U have to give up on many things in life when u become a doctor!

That's simply not my reality. I am a pediatrician who works 45 hours a week, and I love my job. I have been a doctor for twenty years, and I have written and published two books on pediatrics. I am working on my historical novel set in 1940's Shanghai. I created my own gaming online community and I play computer games daily with my son. I also love photography and I take pictures daily and edit them. I plan to have a gallery show one day for my photographs.

Surprising that all that was a revelation to you. You should have better prepared yourself for the reality of medical life. But, it's not too late. Consider doing something else that you find fulfilling. And, with a medical degree one can do things other than practicing. I spent a lot of time teaching and found that very rewarding.

@@wholeNwon Nope! I still want to pursue this course and frankly speaking, after these years in med school, I feel I can't do anything apart from this. I just wish, the system of teaching and practice changes in favour of the students and doesn't stick to the age old methods.

Dont Go to med School if you hate School! Dont Go to med School if you hate people Dont go to med school if you dont like hard work. @MedSchoolInsiders I am an NP in practice for about 12 years and I totally 100% agree with the points you brought up in this video. I worked a set of podiatrists in the past that don't love with that do and hate it when someone else has the charisma to work hard. They hate it when they have to spend extra hours studying or in clinic. Their idea was a 9-5 job 5 days a week and that is in no way represent medicine (MD/DO/NP/PA/CRNA). Its constant, you are either seeing patients in clinic, rounding, charting, or taking care of various admin tasks (such as answering multiple jellybeans in ECW from patient calls) etc.
