As a nurse, I would never treat a doctor badly by paging incessantly for a little reason or bad mouth one just because they made me upset or there was a mistake. If a physician “got on my bad side” the issue will be reported and taken care of by someone who has higher pay grade than me, I don’t have the time or energy to jack around, the patient is the priority and that’s why I’m there.

Doctors fail to understand if nurses don't report things that are considered "silly" we might lose our license or get fired.

I feel really good about the fact that "you learn a lot, you forget a lot". I just finished my first year of medical school and I felt really guilty about forgetting almost half of the things I learned. Knowing that this is part of the road I've taken towards being a doctor makes me feel much better.

As a RN with many years of experience, I have never encountered a nurse who calls a doctor incessantly to "get back at them" or "make them look bad." We don't have time to go to the bathroom, much less call you incessantly over a trivial matter. It seems like the nurses you have met are bad apples with character flaws that do not follow the ideals we pledged to when we graduated nursing school. I hope you work with kind and competent nurses in the future.

I wanted to become a doctor before, then I totally changed my mind, now after watching that, I definitely don't want to become a doctor even more... best decision of my life to stop pursuing to become a doctor... like any field, it's not for everyone and I have huge respect for doctors because it is clearly such a demanding profession... props to all med student and praticians!!

I just want to add that your social skills will help you a lot with all the team: nurses, technicians, superior residents. And of course social skills have a huge impact in the relation with your patients.

Never be an enemy to a nurse. They will save your butt. Not only that, nurses will manage you up which is really nice when you are introduced to your patients. Nurses know 10000% more about the patients then you do, from their daily living activities, medical history, current health status (literally down to the hour), and family members. MDs usually only know the patient's by their disease and health issues, that's it! On average for a week of hospital stay, doctors spend up to 1hr total with the patients. The rest is managed by the medical staff. A medical diagnosis is only 20% of the whole picture, it takes case management, pharmacy, medical billing, nurses, and social workers to complete the admission and discharge. Ever heard of nurses are the arms, legs, eyes, and ears of the doctors?

I love the attention brought to Dr. Gawande’s books. I’ve read them all, and they are what have helped motivate me to become a current pre-med. I thoroughly enjoy these videos also.

This was a massive eye opener. I am currently in a premedicine program and this provided me with more information than my academic advisors did. Thank you for sharing you experiences, and good luck with your field!

Great video! :) I also commented on your previous video (Do not go to medical school if this is you). I'm a psychiatrist so I've been through a lot of the same working through my earlier years as a junior doctor/resident. The only thing I want to add is this: Sexual harassment is rife in certain medical specialties, especially in male dominated surgical fields. Female residents are often scared to speak up to avoid ruining their career. This is something I wish I'd knew before doing medicine. I had to contend with some sexually inappropriate co-workers in my time but they're not too bad. But as a psychiatrist, I also see other fellow doctors who are traumatised by their experience. So always be your guard, get good supervision (regular), and join a union. You can never be too careful.

Coming from a nurses perspective (as well as my own experience)... when doctors and nurses work well together it makes a huge difference in care. I do work with some nurses that page about things that are trivial and act as ifs the end of the world if a potassium level is 3.2 and needs to be replaced. There’s a knee jerk reaction that may stem from a lack of knowledge or a lack of critical thinking or a lack of empowerment. Most of us will just add to our scut list for when the residents are out of the OR. Communication is key but also respect. I once paged the surgeon because a patient had absent breath sounds to the left lung field, a little bit of a reflexive cough when turning side to side and the SpO2 which was normally 96-98% range on room air was now 94-95%. I knew he had cancer and that it was metastatic and knew the rest of the PMHx. He was afebrile and otherwise totally vitally stable. No CP no SOB although due to the locations of the CA wasn’t getting out of bed to determine if he had SOBOE. I didn’t get far enough in the CT scan history to see that there were lung Mets when I was first coming in for the day, never took care of this patient before). Anyways I called the surgeon, asked for a chest X-ray and just for good measure an NP swab. I had to convince him to get it and he gave me a lot of attitude. Apparently absent breathe sounds over an entire lung field wasn’t concerning. Anyways paged twice more to advocate for the CXR and he finally said yes. CXR was done and I got a panicky phone call from radiology saying there was a massive pneumothorax. Thoracic got consulted and did a bedside CT. I saw the surgeon later and he was like oh yea he has lung mets, to which I said “oh yea I knew he had Mets, didn’t get to read the chest CT results from 3 months ago to see there were lung Mets (risk factor for a pneumo)”. Anyways he was all like “how do you not know he had lung Mets?!? He’s your patient”. I never said this, but I should have told him that I shouldn’t have had to convince him to get the CXR if he knew the pt had lung Mets, that based on what I was telling him when I paged he should have seen right away that there was an indication to do the test. Anyways I think the moral of the story is that nurses, just like doctors, are sometimes good/bad at communicating and sometimes have good/bad critical thinking skills sometimes. If the surgeon had communicated better with me and worked through the issue with me or taken time to listen the CT would have been done hours sooner. Thankfully the pt wasn’t in any sort of respiratory distress and after pleurodesis he finally got his CT out and hasn’t had any other issues. I still struggle with that surgeon still at times just with how he approaches things (told a patient he would take out her NGT which is something the nurses do... then he never came back to do it and the pt went another day with the NGT and the pt was really disappointed). But I think things have improved since the pneumothorax incident to some degree because at the end of the day it was a good catch and the patient did ok.

I'm guilty of pressurizing my daughter to do premed, and then she didn't end up going to med school..... On top of that she married a pharmacist and all the "Indian parents" give me grief that he is just a pharmacist. It's an ugly Indian parent world out there

As a clinical (hospital) pharmacist, it was interesting to me how many of these things applied to my job as well. Sure, the hours aren’t always quite as long, but on call commitment and the sense of duty to the patient can often keep you at work longer than you are meant to be, affecting your work life balance (especially if you also factor in post-graduate qualifications and having to fit study time for those in your schedule alongside work) . Plus, the different specialities (“something for everyone”) and the knowledge aspect (going narrower and deeper, realising that you’ve only scratched the surface) is something I come across every day. I’ve specialised in oncology for 5 years now, and I often feel I’ve forgotten so much of my “general medicine” knowledge, like cardiology or diabetes; at the same time, I feel like I’ve still only scratched the surface of what there is to know about cancer... And of course, being in oncology has meant facing death and has definitely changed my attitude towards it; it has also made me feel grateful every day that my parents (one in her 60s, the other in his 70s) are alive and well and healthy, given that I see patients much younger than them in my day-to-day practice.

I am a nurse and i have never paged a doctor more because they have gotten on my bad side. I only page doctors to notify them of a change in my patients condition or to request orders. If a physician got on my "bad side" it would probably because they were being an asshole and even then i would just brush it off and continue working. I've never seen nurses page doctors more because they don't like them. If anything they page them less because it means interacting with them less. Maybe doctors think this is how nurses behave? That just sounds very petty. That part of the video just rubbed me the wrong way. I like that he said we can be your best friends and we really can. We are a great resource especially to newer doctors. When you get on our bad side we are still a great resource because we put our patients first and want to provide the best care we can. Of course there is always exceptions but this video makes it sound like we behave one of two ways and it's just not right.

I’m someone who suffers from Crohn’s disease. My whole life I’ve had dreams of becoming a doctor, and while I’m only in High School, I want to get an earlier start at applying myself in the medical field. I’m so glad to hear that someone who suffers from same condition isn’t being held back by their condition, and is able to succeed in the medical field. I’ve had a lot of worries about my condition stopping me from following my dreams, so I’m very glad to hear that Crohn’s hasn’t stopped you from following yours.

“I have Crohn’s Disease” Lol my ears perked up cus I’m like “Eeeeeyeeee me too!” I was diagnosed when I was a year old and I’m very lucky that I’m stable and I haven’t had any symptoms since I was 9; that was when I had surgery and switched to the medication I’m on now. Good luck to you. The only time I considered being a doctor was when I was really little and I didn’t stick with that for long, I still have no idea what I want to do as a career, but I still find this stuff fascinating. Thanks for the vid.
