Healthcare - I’ve lived n Thailand 7 years and I can attest to the quality of healthcare here being as good as the US, much less expensive, and much more accessible. I have insurance with a $1,000 deductible but have never had a medical bill over $500, That $500 was two nights in a private hospital recovering from a Dengue fever infection. I can book next day appointments myself with specialists such as dermatologists, urologists, neurologists, and oral surgeons. I recommend paying routine care out of pocket and have insurance for a really catastrophic health issue. You can’t always depend on being able to return to your home country for treatment. If you have a stroke, heart attack, or vehicle accident then you will need treatment where you are.

Thank you for sharing Marty. I have been in Thailand for 1 1/2 years this last time; and on-and-off several years in past. I went back to the States in 2020 because I had to have open heart surgery, which i could not afford here, but the VA hospitals provided free. In my experience medical care here is much better than the VA hospitals.. I would like to ask you - seriously - what insurance company you have (I currently have no insurance, am 76 y.o. so it is hard to get approval) and what it has cost you in the past for dermatology, urology, et cetera. I am planning on going to Manila soon to try to access medical care at the VA's clinic there. No idea how accommodating they will be. Possible I could get medical evaluation by the VA and bring the evaluation back to Chiang Mai and start spending my disability allowance on my health issues. Any advice would be appreciated

@@DanielCunningham-bm5vb My Thai insurance is with Pacific Cross but at 76 years old I doubt you can get a good policy with them or anyone else. My last appointment with a dermatologist, with drugs, I think was $125. A couple of hundred dollars to see a neurologist and get an MRI. $550 for two nights in a private room in a private hospital - Dengue fever I’ve heard that the VA clinic in the Philippines will only treat service related problems. Good luck.

About the VA clinic I have researched it online and the information is not completely clear, the one person who replied to my inquiry just said they handle non-service-related within their limits. The chart I saw showed they could cover some things like cardio and audiology. But maybe it would mean referring the patient out to a private hospital at his expense. KL is looking more feasible at this point.

Wait!!!! Hold the press!!!! You met with a dietician to go over the results of your medical tests. Imagine that!!! Change your diet to improve your health. In the US, you meet with your “drug dealer” (aka doctor) to go over your medical tests. In 2022, I changed my diet and walked 8 miles every other day…lost 50 lbs, got off the 7 medications and now have the best blood tests ever. I still follow my new lifestyle 2 years and 5 months later

@@nomadjim Fo Sho!!! My doctor is a friend and I am trying to influence him. Once I reached my goals, (weight, exercise, biomarkers measured by blood tests) he told me I have a 2% chance of success. I have found that the better physical condition I'm in the less ailments creep up on me. As a matter of fact I used to have prostate problems frequently, and now it feels like my core is the center of my strength and no more prostate issues.

cost of healthcare in the United States - it could be $300 in Location A or the same exact thing could be $3,000 in Location B. Also, the insurance could cover all of it, or none of it, you really will not know until you get the bill a month later. It's a total nightmare.

Next week I'll be in Baguio Philippines. Maybe a month later in Nha Trang Vietnam I'm going to give slow travel a shot because when I was stationed in Germany, I learned that people around the world are actually quite decent. Decency seems to be dying back here in the States. It really breaks my heart after devoting Eight years of my life to military service to protect the US. I'm looking forward to escaping the divisiveness that politics has created here. We have a political party openly talking about another Civil War. It's exhausting.

@@WilliamFluery While I took that same oath, I completely fulfilled my active and reserve service commitment. Now, I'm retired and have different plans. Do I want to stay and fight with the MAGAtard Cult? No thank-you. Maybe if I were younger and not disabled. If you choose to do that, I'm not going to judge your choice. It's your choice to decide what you want to do. I've never believed in forcing my will on to others.

I lived a minimalist lifestyle for 20 years before retiring. It was still hard to clear out and sell/donate everything except 2 suitcases for overseas, but it sure makes it easier. Plus, it makes it easy to take up an enjoyable, simple, low cost overseas life.

Another great interview , Thanks . I'm glad your guest mentioned slowing down the pace because -Just me - but I don't see less than a month or even more being your classic " slow travel". A while back you had a gentleman citing a 52 weeks 52 locations plan as Slow Travel . It made me think you must have incredible patience or just could not resist going along for the ride - or both .

I just spent five days in valley Baptist hospital for little to nothing they billed Medicare A $127,00. No surgery…. I got $9k my part. Sad food terrible experience and I was a provider for 3 years … so I can tell you the USA system is fully broken whatever way you wish to look at it

Renting becomes owning if you’re tied down to maintaining bases because it ties you down. However if you take a hotel that you like in the area of choice you can show up whenever. That’s preferable with no expense.

Sounds like he could easily make his stays be at hotels. Why enter into a lease contract when only staying for a few weeks or maybe a little more than a month? Advantages? Hotels don't usually charge for utilities, water or garbage collection fees. Almost always include hot water, heat, internet and Air conditioning. Plus, usually a land line type telephone. Basically, everything is covered by the hotel's cost. Often, they even have continental breakfast for free or very little cost. Sometimes they will even bring the breakfast to your room.

I prefer the feeling of being in an apartment. In a hotel you feel more like a tourist. In an apartment you feel more like a local. Also, staying in an AirBnB apartment, which I generally do, the costs you mention are covered in the price you pay for the unit. And hot water, heat and A/C are standard in most places.

Thank you Dan and Jim for sharing your experience and advice. I am 76 y.o., in Thailand. Not exactly a slow-traveller I am more like a slow stumbler. One of the problems I have had has been lack of an address in North America. The house I lived in in Massachusetts, they refused to allow me to claim that as a permanent address for legal purposes. Like for my Charles Schwab bank and Amazon account, they want an address in the U.S. for reference. And Bangkok Bank wants a long-term address here. They would prefer my VA disability check to come directly to Bangkok Bank, for the visa application, but the VA online forms make it impossible to change the DD bank . So how have you handled you permanent address, e.g. making hotel reservations, visa applications, car rentals......?

You're very welcome! I have a virtual mailbox address in the US that I use as my permanent address for the various things you mentioned. I would have the VA disability check deposited in a US bank account that you can draw from as needed. You don't really need a bank account in Thailand if you can just draw from your US account.

They want 800,000 baht in the Thai bank for 3 months or more before making an application for a Retirement visa. I had that covered a year ago. Now, my g/f and I are thinking about getting married and the Marriage visa requirement is 400,000 baht, for three months, or so. I have drawn down the balance and if I go to Philippines and/or Malaysia I will have to start over again and transfer my fortune over to Thailand again - or else have the VA make DD of my allowance into the Thai bank every month. Dan , enjoy your content. Would love to see you cover the topic of owning a small home base. I love traveling to Asia. I am currently in Las Vegas and thinking about downsizing and selling my house. Too big and too much maintenance. I do want to keep a footprint though in the US. A small place that is safe, quiet, and peaceful. Don’t want a lot of monthly fees and also a place I could leave for months without worrying about. Any suggestions or chance of an ideal home base location video that would be adjacent to an airport? Lots of options for food and entertainment here but it’s too expensive for what it is currently.

Thanks for the question. For me I see a home base as being a place that I really enjoy and feel comfortable spending time in, that I would like to keep returning to over and over, that has good connections to the region to allow for easy exploration in that region, that has activities I enjoy...e.g., abundant nature and hiking opportunities, that has an availability of a wide variety of cuisines, that I have some connections to... perhaps it's a place that is a health care location for me, or one where I am active in a local social group or have some good friends that I enjoy spending time with. At this point, that's what I'm looking for in a home base. But fundamentally, I think it's just a place that feels very comfortable to you and that satisfies whatever it is that is most important to you.

The problem I see with this - for me - would be the actual work it takes for making the arrangements so frequently - to 'affordably' keep moving ? --- Perhaps a slower move - like a monthly rental rate might help that ? --- He must be seeing that light. --- Areas of interest surely would also require longer stays than 10 - 15 days ? You are a little confused so maybe I can add a few words on this. I live in Japan I am retired and have been for 10+ years. I retired from the U.S. slow travel does not mean you leave every month. You move when you get the urge. At 74 I go slow moving every month would wear me out. I have no budget I spend every dollar if I don’t spend it I give it away. I earn 5 times more than the average salaried Japanese so anyplace in Asia is more affordable for me. Still we try to live economically to see how we can stretch the money and in Japan it can be as little as a thousand dollars or less a month. Then your travel becomes your main expense that you can budget for. Keeping your travel to a minimum might be a consideration if you are short that time. A visa is usually 3 months so unless I want something more my slow travel is 4 to six times a year. If you have a woman in each place it becomes difficult anyway to leave in less than 3 months I know that’s true for me anyway. Money can’t be a problem if you are American on social security and have some savings. Never tell people how much you make because the difference will make people angry. American retirements are enormous compared to the world so you can go anywhere in Asia without worrying about your budget. I was an accountant I know the importance of a budget when you are working and building wealth. But now is simply living within your means

@jackhayden3050 Yes, Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur. You can make an appointment for a health screening online through their website. Recommend making an appointment at least 3 weeks in advance because they do fill up quickly.

But how would Jim handle major health issues without any insurance especially in countries or cities without the high quality of care or where it can be more expensive than Malaysia? Of course the whole lifestyle only works best for a single person, but if you're married with children....??

If I had a major health issue, for example a diagnosis of cancer, I would probably choose to take care of that in the US where I do still have medical insurance.

@@dovygoodguy1296 For most medical issues, it's a reasonable cost to just pay out of pocket in many places around the world, and also get great medical care. But if it involved something more costly, as with a major health issue like cancer, then I would take care of it with insurance in the US.

I’d be interested to know if he ever gets lonely?, how long he’s been slow-travelling for?, and is he old enough to receive a pension or is he living off savings?

Thank you for your questions. I'm comfortable with being alone, but if I do feel lonely I can always do a video call with family or friends or meet people in my location to hang out with. I've been slow traveling for about 2 years. I'm 60 years old and have a pension. Also, I planned to do a lot of traveling in retirement, so I made it a priority while I was working to save and invest enough so I could afford it.

I am not an expert on international travel with pets. but I hear many countries require letters from vets explaining that animals that want to board airplanes are healthy and vaxed and that sort of thing? Sorry I don't know more.

i'm about 2-3 years from being a slowish traveler. Probably start in Europe and hit every country there, stay in some longer than others. I'm just going to play it by ear and see where things take me. May also get a long term Eurail Global pass that covers trains and ferries to 33 countries, and just ride around for awhile and see a lot that way to. I don't need 5 star hotels or expensive restaurants, cheaper hotels and non touristy local restaurants work best for me. I will probably end up in SEA and use Thailand as a base to visit the countries around there.

@mhar805633 Sounds like a great plan! When in Europe, keep in mind that you cannot spend more than 90 days within a 180-day period within the Schengen zone countries. So plan your travels to balance your time between Schengen and non-Schengen countries to keep within that limitation. You've got the right ideas for where to stay and how to eat. If I'm staying in hotels, I always stay in locally owned places that are modest but comfortable rather than chain hotels or 5-star resorts. The non-tourist restaurants just a block or two from the tourist area have great food at much cheaper prices. Best of luck as you prepare for your slow travel adventure!

@@nomadjim thanks for the response. yeah, i'm going to bounce in and out of the Schengen areas for awhile, and then work my way up to the 5 year multiple entry visa. that way i can go back and forth without doing visa stuff each time. I learned the hard way to check out the rooms of the non chain hotels before you do anything. Went to a "nice" hotel in Copenhagen years ago, got all checked in and then went to the room. the room itself was okay, but the bed had a large human length dent in the mattress, and the headboard finish had been worn in a circle from apparently women's heads rubbing on it. Found out that the hotel was apparently on the edge of the red light district, the rooms were for more short term fun. This was before cell phones and internet were everywhere, and i'd never been to Copenhagen before so had no clue. Just came in by train from Aarhus and picked one of the hotels near the station. LOL

Yes, it was the health screening. They offer multiple packages so you should look at their website to see what fits your needs. My full day of test was about $320 US. I also met w/ a dermatologist & Ortho, each visit was US$48 & I was able to schedule an appointment within 24 hours
