As a Chinese, this video is very mind-opening and it answered many question I had on Russian people. Fun fact I found recently is that in Russian the word “China” is “Китай”or “Kithay”, name of a Chinese dynasty when it was not ruled by Han Chinese at all but Mongolians. It’s like a foreign nation still refer the Americans as the “Cherokees” or Russia as “Golden Horde” Edit: I found some of you get offended for this comment. This is simply a piece of info I found interesting, not blaming Russians for it. The Chinese did not call Russians by the right name either

Anyway, I got the dude’s number and after that I tried calling him a couple times to have a dinner at my house and hang out but he always refused by saying a couple words like he was busy or sth and hung up the phone fast. I asked my friends who were with him at that time and he said he wasn’t busy and that’s when I realized I made a mistake. After that experience, I stopped asking and taking about politics with other foreign friends. People say “never talk about religions and politics” that’s true. I grew up in an environment where it’s okay to talk and joke about politics so I was clueless about it. Silly me. Never do that.

I must visit Russia one day. I remember visiting Bochum, Germany. I was at a bar drinking a business trip night away when two women at a table behind me recognized that I was an American. One was a very old woman. Seasoned. She had seen it before. Wise. The other was her daughter. I would learn through our introductionary pleasantries that she could speak english. They invited me to sit down to talk. Through about 20-30min of balled up conversations about my visit to Germany, why I was there and where had I'd been, she got to the point. "Do Americans hate us?" "Do Americans think that we Germans are Nazi's?" I could see the concern, resent, confusion and a yearn for resolve in her eyes. I emphatically shook my head and told her "No" and I explained to her that I cannot deny that some in the US still have older friends and family alive that may still a hold hatred against Germany through the eyes of the WWII. She understood. She then begrudgingly talked about some of her friends who still believed in what should be or should of been. I told her that while some Americans may still agree with this ideology, like her friends do, it is no different than those in the US still holding onto the hatred of the black or mexican americans living in the US. She couldn't understand this fully because we had freed slaves so long ago and Mexico was on our border. She even asked about Canadians. I told her they bring Maple Syrup when they cross over. It's like a bribe. She laughed. I explained that the vast majority of the US understands what happened in WWII and that we learned about it in our school books. However, the vast majority _also_ understand the fact that we live in a different time. We don't not forget the past, but we learn from it. We just want to grow, live together and have a future. She showed relief. We all took a shot of Jaeger together. She then opened up to me more about history and life lessons. There was so much more into this conversation. She was so wise and she made me think from perspectives I had not experienced on subjects I had never even thought about. I want you to know that we did have our differences. However, in the end, even with my explanation that my company would take the expenses, she picked up my bar tab (I had maybe 4 beers and 7 shots of Jaeger on it) and we hugged and parted our ways. One of the best conversations I have ever had in my life. I will keep the rest to myself. Someday, I hope to visit Russia and have one of these conversations. Instead of Jaeger, it will obviously be Vodka.
