House sitting or pet sitting is a lot of fun. I like to leave flowers when they return. One important lesson I have learned is to always have a key with me when I go outside, or have a way back inside-especially when the dog is inside and accidently shuts the door while you are retrieving the dog dish from outside and you are in your pajamas....and it is raining. Oh, and never go outside in your pajamas or you will have to go over to the neighbors with thankfully a dog blanket from the dog house, unthankfully that is smelled just a little.

Do... Use coasters/place mats for food and drink on furniture. A great tip we heard off another RU-vidr. 👍👍

Oh, and don't leave your shoes on the floor or anywhere the puppy can get to them. It is bad for both you and puppy! Also, just make sure any other items are not easily accesable and can be dragged outside to the yard for all of the neighbors to see. :D

YES! Good call! Don't assume anything with puppies! One time we came home to find that the puppy we were watching made a chew toy out of a Redbox DVD even though she was tethered and technically was unable to reach the counter. But, somehow, she did it and our $2 rental turned into a $30 purchase 😩

All so true! Thanks for sharing. We're getting into our house sitting journey now and this is all really relatable. Our recent lesson was to make sure we put the toilet seat down (boys!!) because we were woken up one night due to the doggie drinking from the bowl LOL :) We did laugh though, as did her owners.

Hey, Xavier! We actually didn't charge for our services when we traveled since we were living at each house sit for longer periods of time. Homeowners cover their usual home costs (internet, pet, trash, electricity, etc.) and we simply care for their pet in exchange for a rent-free home.

Do you work a job while you house sit?

Yes, we both work remotely. However, house sitting can be a great way to keep your lodging expenses down while you're on vacation. The tricky part there is usually timing, but families tend to go on vacations when their kids are on break during the school year and the summer. Give that a shot if you can't take your work on the road with you!

I am from India and am I eligible to house-sitting in Europe or in US?

Hi there! From what we know, you can pretty much house sit anywhere you'd like. Of course, you'll need to figure out the Visitor Visa rules. For our house sit in Costa Rica, we were allowed to stay in the country for up to 90 days without a visa. Ultimately, know your travel rules and communicate with your homeowners. Enjoy!
