Greetings extended family
I have another video for you!! I am excited for this one!
The video is about 4 Do's and 4 Don'ts when you engage in conversation with Gambian people in and/or outside The Gambia.
I give you tips and advise on norms that are culturally related and very good to have some knowledge about when encountering and interacting with Gambian people.
I also share some personal experiences related to the different advise I have for you.
I hope you enjoy the video - because I sure enjoyed making it for you!
00:00 INTRO

This is SO relevant for people visiting Senegal as well!! Especially Americans. Especially well-meaning Americans. Do you say toubab as well? I understand it is not rude. But many people like me do not

There are of course many things that are different. Like the shoes...ci sama yaay senegalaise we wear daal bi. But with English as my native language, its helpful to learn about Senegambia from you.

It’s me again....African American from South Carolina. I had a white professor who said that she wanted to be called by her first name....she then stated that.....”my African American students have a hard time calling me by my first name but my name is Jamie and that is what I want to be called.” In my African American community you will get a side eye or a pop if you dare call anyone who is older than you by their first name.

I raised n America all you mentioned about the don'ts is the rules my parents taught me. The do's are the same except the right- giving/ left-receiving hand. I hate that now days people don't want to remove their shoes. growing up it was the norm u never had to tell people to take shoes off. But now a days NO ONE removes shoes unless you tell them. And some still refuse ,makes me want to slap them up side the head. Now, I just don't invite people in my house .Thank you for video

Peace love health & happyness Beautiful Sister. Thank you for caring & sharing. This is a wonderful show. I am moving to The Gambia soon. I am learning much from you. Growing up as an African American family it was taboo not to speak to a person or the group when you walk into the room without giving proper greeting. Good morning, good day etc. The saying was if you did not sleep with me then you must show respect and greet me before you start talking. in fact the elders would make you leave then reenter the room to properly make your salutation. Don't see that being enforced too much these days but I do by being consistent with my text, writing telephone calls no matter I always greet with peace love health & happyness. First it empowers the Reciprocate as well as myself. Now I'm going to learn how to speak it in the native language. Sincerely Priestess Yogini NuRa-Dina

It’s unfair for the left handed person, I usually use my left hand because my right hand is not really intended to react like receiving things my right hand is weak compared to the left because the right is not often used on a daily basis. It’s a form of discrimination be fair left handed people is a human too. When I was in colleges the school prepared every room a arm chair for left handed and free to received our left and right. Not good idea

As salaam alaikum sis. Most of these things are islamic customs that you will find worldwide. The Prophet said salaam is a right upon each other, he also informed us cover our mouths because shaytan enters there, he also said give and receive with the right because shaytan does it with the left. Taking off shoes is a custom among many Muslims worldwide. Showing respect to parents is not only Islamic but other religions as well. I grew up with a Bible thumping grandma! Intermingling with the opposite sex especially touching is also a practice forbidden by the prophet and jealousy is a natural thing but must be controlled.

The things you’ve mentioned are pretty much worldwide. Contrary to what some think westerners are taught etiquette and manners. It’s basic manners 101. Although I understand there’s mannerless people everywhere. Can I ask was this video directed towards “black Americans”?
@africandiaries

Yeah sure - a lot of cultures have similar customs and is world wide! The content on African Diaries is directed towards Africans all around the world, from the continent and the diaspora!

I work with a young Gambian man in his early 20’s. He always greets with a fist bump and eye contact. It’s the same when he says bye. However, I noticed that when he is not happy with me, he will just look slightly away and stick his elbow out instead of his fist. Is this intended as an insult or some kind of message???
@africandiaries

Hmm I'm not aware of that gesture being rude or insulting. Maybe that's just his way of expressing himself ☺️

I am curious as to where did the yawning without covering the mouth is rude come from?
@africandiaries
@africandiaries 3 года назад
Well covering your mouth comes from the Islamic way of life... NOT covering it is that viewed as not a nice thing to do.. "an exception of the norm"
@bamazedwiththis3591
@bamazedwiththis3591 3 года назад
Evolved concept/changed from it's Original. Originally from Ancient Africa if you did not cover mouth while yawning it was believed that evil spirits could enter you through your mouth.American Christian Grand MaMa use to say, cover ur mouth before the devil enters in. I my self believe in no religion All religions mislead But I love Spirituality it never lies nor misleads.Blessings to you All.

Yeah, The Gambia is very Civilized, MashAllah. Now, when it comes Yawning, The only culture that excepts it is Crocodile or Alligator. Also in deen it says, the Shayatiin will enter your mouth. May Allah protect us from it.

Exactly, it stems from the culture and also the religion. And I like it like that lol, I think it's not nice when people just open their mouths like that lol
