Have you ever asked yourself: do solar attic fans really work? I bought two of them from RemingtonSolar.com and did a real solar attic fan test and tested with temperature change. It was not super hot, but look for another video and I'll try it again when it's really hot. But I did seem to get the temperature down considerably within about an hour of the fans running on a warm (Texas) day. This was a good test to research solar attic fans. My two 25-watt solar fans brought the temperature down from 110 degrees to 101 degrees in about an hour, which is within range of the 10 degree ambient range outside. My soffit venting is good. I think solar attic fans, with proper soffit ventilation, can reduce attic temperatures.
I haven't seen many tests or real research data about solar attic fans. Do solar attic fans really work? I think the data here on a mildly hot day tells the story.

Great Video, you are the only person with temp test

Enjoyed the video. Informative for attic Temps. I would like to say it is installed incorrectly. The bottom of this or any vent is suppose to act as the lower shingle. This one has shingles rapped completely around it. It's prettier that way but no one can see that anyway. The problem here is and I'm sure you sealed all around it, but that's not enough. Most any type of sealer will eventually spilt or separate and allow water in on the under side. In this type installation, water will leak under the shingles and rot the decking, maybe damage your insulation or sheet rock. Maybe even cause mold issues etc. Only the top half or so of the base should have shingles over it. The base of the vent housing should act as or replace the shingles on the lower side allowing water to flow back onto the top of the next/lower shingle and not run under as it eventually will as installed. Don't ask how I know this!

*Well-made, delivered quickly, and easy to install with **Fastly.Cool** . I may be imagining it, but it seems quieter than the 14 year-old unit that I pulled out. Of course it was noisy at the end due to failed bearings, so hard to compare.*

If you want these solar fans to work to their full capability you MUST seal off all ridge vents and gable end vents.the air flow must be pulled through the soffit vents-other wise your only pulling hot air from the very peak of your attic/roof.my fans dropped the attic temp by nearly 30 degrees-they work but unless you block off all other ventilation points your only removing a fraction of the hot air from the attic

makes sense I just had my roof checkd. supposed to be 3-4 ft from ridge vent. However yea doesn't seem all that effective. Seems like it would draw from the ridgevent as well? IDK 4 sure. I used a plain old box fan last year put it horizontal on my ladder to attic. I cracked the garage door so it could draw the ambient air from outside. Worked ok I guess. I should try some temp readings to see if it really works. I think it helped anyway.. anny suggestions?

@@tjhx5413 so-the ridge vent runs the full width of the roof and is open @2” from each side of the peak.basically picture a triangular section of air right below plywood in the attic. The fan can only pull air from that very small volume of air directly below the peak(ridge) By blocking off each bay and eliminating that air source the fan will pull air up from the soffits.bringing in cooler outdoor air while sucking the hotter air out from the WHOLE attic.Until you force the air to be drawn up from the soffits your only removing a fraction of the heat from the attic. Cut strips of Tar paper to fit between the rafter bays and staple it to the under side of the plywood.YES- it will suck to do in June but you’ll see the difference right away. Let me know what happens-good luck

Difficult test to set up... I appreciate your efforts. thank you for sharing! maybe choose the hottest time of the day when temperatures are starting to go down. At this time shut the fan off and monitor temperature... see how much the temp rises in the attic. then repeat with an electric fan and see if there is a bigger difference...

You may consider sealing any gaps or cracks in the attic floor to prevent the hot attic air from coming into the house. A hot attic doesn't matter much in a sealed and insulated attic.

I got one and did nothing. I actually got the top of the line Remington solar fan and my attic is still hot as heck. I noticed most videos have their comments turned off. Now I know why

SunRise Solar invented the solar fan over 20 years ago. They still make them by hand in the USA using high-quality materials. Remington, along with a lot of other manufacturers are just Chinese-made knock-offs that don't work well.

We haven't really monitored our RU-vid site, so sorry about that. But we're very active on our Facebook and primary website at RemingtonSolar.com. We have some specials on our solar attic fans, and if you're interested, you can use coupon code "solar10" for 10% off everything on our website. The SolaSkimmer is awesome if you own a pool. And our Chlorine-Free Sun Shock is a great pool product to cut down on your algae and chlorine use. This video is an old video before we went to a square design. We want our solar attic fans to look good as well as work well...and be priced competitively. Please contact us at support@remingtonsolar.com if you have any questions.

Might be interesting to re-test. by trying reversing one of the 2 fans. So that one fan would push air into the attic and the other pull air from the attic. Reduce the chance to pull conditioned air from the home.

do you recommend installing more eave vents when using more CFM? I have three, one on each of my side gables(eves beneath peak rectangular approx. 36" guestamated) and two on my front gable(smaller each about half the size but two on that one.) have no eave vents near the front or read wall eaves(back wall/front gagage wall, only eaves vented are near to peak of gables above bedrooms in front/sides of house, have a L-plan house.the "I" wing has bedrooms/hallway and den. Then on the _ wing garage/kitchen which is typical of L plans houses. don't need to cool garage as much as I do the living area but I know all of these places make a difference in the attic.

I wish you have blocked them off for an entire day, I know my roof a similar color on a 90* day had 105 ceiling temperatures in some rooms and 115+ above the non insulated attic door

Not really, there is no any kind of damper above the fan, so the air is going to escape anyway. Its just going to be much less...
