Welcome to our channel! Today, we're diving deep into the world of soul and disco vinyl records, comparing original pressings with reissues. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting your vinyl journey, understanding the differences between these two can enhance your appreciation of the music and the medium.
Original Pressings: The Authentic Experience
Original pressings are the first versions of records released during the initial production run. For soul and disco aficionados, these records offer an authentic connection to the era when the music was first created and enjoyed. Here’s why original pressings are often prized:
Sound Quality: Original pressings are known for their unique sound characteristics, often providing a warmer and more dynamic listening experience. The analog mastering techniques used at the time capture the true essence of the music.
Historical Value: Owning an original pressing is like holding a piece of history. These records were produced in the same period the music was popular, giving them a special place in any collection.
Collector’s Item: Original pressings are often rare and can be valuable, making them highly sought after by collectors. The scarcity and condition of these records can significantly affect their market value.
Reissues: Accessibility and Modern Touches
Reissues are new pressings of previously released albums, often remastered and sometimes remixed. They provide an accessible way to enjoy classic soul and disco music. Here are some key points about reissues:
Availability: Reissues make it easier for fans to find and enjoy classic albums without hunting down rare originals. They are often readily available in music stores and online.
Affordability: Generally, reissues are more affordable than original pressings, allowing more people to enjoy the music without a hefty price tag.
Modern Remastering: Many reissues are remastered using modern technology, which can enhance clarity and detail. However, some purists argue that this can alter the original sound intended by the artists and producers.
Bonus Content: Reissues sometimes include bonus tracks, liner notes, and artwork, providing additional value and insight into the music and its creation.
Which Should You Choose?
The choice between original pressings and reissues depends on your personal preferences and goals as a collector. If you value historical authenticity and unique sound quality, original pressings might be your go-to. If you seek accessibility, affordability, and modern enhancements, reissues are a fantastic option.
Ultimately, both original pressings and reissues have their own merits, and both can enrich your vinyl collection in different ways. Whether you’re spinning a rare original or a freshly pressed reissue, the most important thing is to enjoy the music and the joy it brings.

I‘m so stunned about those originals. Congratulations, never seen even one of them in the wild.

Hier sieht man exemplarisch, was eigentlich möglich wäre.

Honorable Member of the Vinyl Community- 2 points to add. #1. I would distinctly not compare a vinyl transcription to a needle drop ( having worked a few transcriptions myself) : and# 2. have you questioned Mr. Sullivan as to the source of the LP in discussion as he has an incredibly reputable reputation along with Ms. Pawelski and: who have both been involved in re-issue discussions at SXSW way before any VC existed AFAIK. Thanks for this shootout and keep it up . Merci Beaucoup!

A review of reissue labels, litho , print, mastering and the chain would be an interesting one one from ERC and Mr. Hutchinson down to the so called "bootleg "or unofficial press" labels.

We seem to have a different opinion on this topic. Like I said in the video, I'm reaching out, but the responses are very few to zero. Thanks and have a great day. Nadine

@Nadine it's just constructive critical thinking from my side.. You are a stalwart with the quest and the passion for grail of your loved music genre. It's a wonderful thing that you have. It's just a public space. And I think that the best I learn is from hearing via others regarding the experiencial nature of the narrative. I did say keep it up sista. 🎶👍 No offense intended.

When you consider the unit price per thousand there is little excuse for using plain paper inners when polylined are so much kinder to the record especially in transit. On reissues, when we are talking about the rarity of these releases, while it's right to encourage the best possible reissue, we do have to accept because of issues around tape availablity we may need to accept whatever is available even a good needledrop.

Find an original. Hard work. Hold a reissue. Artwork may not be the best as could be the pressing. But you have the music.
