I’d say it had pretty much the same impact on him as his father would be, especially given the end of across the spiderverse where we are shown the same memorial to e42 miles’ father as Aaron’s on e1610.

@@HunneraProductionsiles has lots of trauma… But I agree with you 100%: Miles has a pretty normal life. Two parent lower middle class household. Not bullied. Good looking and decently likable even before getting bitten. Even the Aaron death isn’t as traumatic as Uncle Ben. Aaron is like a second father. Ben is like… THE father to Peter. Miles is not the typical big trauma spiderman. Edit: Except for the mom in the comics… that’s HUGE

Me personally not EVERYTHING has to be traumatic, you can still have well sustained moral endeavors without something excessively egregious happening in the beginning. Because that's part of what a healthy circle is for, like gwen and miles parents for example. That to me is just making someone as sporadic is that happening, and then clinging on that as on end all be all when it comes to the development of a superhero. Superman never met his real parents until later in the comics, all he knew were his adopted parents which were GOOD examples to be altruistic in a wicked everyday world. As humans we're not supposed to be living in constant mental suffering JUST to see the world the way we do which is evil as an outsourced material in order to keep those internalized feelings of objective morality. I hope Miles DOES break the chain because the experience of evil shouldn't be the backbone, it can be CHANGED into something Holy for the better sure, however that's not always how it's supposed to go. Not to mention how we as honorably raised people is how we even GOT the phrase: "your parents must've raised you right."

ı agree just imagine someone becomes a superhero with only reason is obsession to superhero comics. There is a lot of people willing to help people without a single reason or people that always dreamed of become a superhero. So what gonna happen, is all of these people just get their parents killed in some way to make them hero? what if this events just make them worse instead of better? is it everything gonna be their fault because they choose to be bad?

I get that they need trauma to understand their responsibilities as a superhero, but it doesn't always need to be personal. It could be a random person they couldn't save, rather than anyone known to them dying. By having a random person die, the author shows that the character grows a lot of empathy towards everyone around them, and its empathy that makes them heroes not just guilt of losing a loved one. In fact, I think them accidentally killing their first villain and then learning about the villains original motivation and family reactions could be a really effective way of developing a hero.

Okay what's really crazy about this comment is that this is literally the plan I had for my own spidersona 💀 basically he meets the human fly (an obscure and forgotten Spider-Man villain) multiple times, which is like the first villain he meets once he becomes Spider-Man, but only treats him as a villain of the week instead of a person who needs help. Upon finding out who the human fly really is, a person that has ended up this way because of others neglecting and not helping him, including the "friendly neighborhood hero", my spidersona would attempt to save him but it'd be too late and lead to the human fly's death, and thus making him realize that with great power comes great responsibility. Every one of these villains he fights has their reasons for why they do what they do, and instead of treating them as monsters, he needs to treat them as people and save them. I mean, that's what superheroes exist to do after all

@ahshitherewegoagain8695
@ahshitherewegoagain8695 Год назад
@@gemof_gems I get that. But is it really necessary that Uncle Ben should really die for that to affect Peter? He could've seen the news that someone nearby was shot dead by the villain he left loose. It would be traumatic as hell when he sees the family arrive and break down. This way, he feels responsible for his action and tries to justify it, but then Uncle Ben asks him what's wrong and he makes up a similar story on how he let a bully to attack a kid at school and Uncle Ben tells him that those in power should be able to stop the bully, like the pricipal or dean, but they choose not to. This makes Peter go to the police and report himself as a witness to the crime scene, but feels disheartened by the system when they can't prevent a crime before it happens. So this in turn, leads him to think that the only way to prevent crime from happening is to stop it himself and leave behind enough proof to arrest the villain. So he decides to become a vigilante, in order to try and prevent as much crime as he can, so that no other family suffers from his lack of action. I get that this is a more negative approach to the story, but it makes him seem more empathetic and not become Spidey because of personal loss but rather that he values the loss of any life in New York.

Nah. When I was 13 I asked myself this question and found the answer to be a resounding no. Since then ive been writing my own story that is arguably in the superhero genre (hero with extraordinary powers, deals with crime) about a character who has no significant trauma in their past, and bounces back from all traumatic events in the story with remarkable ease. No "give them the trauma IN the story instead muahahaha" stuff here. In fact one of the main character conflicts is the main villain trying to figure out what her _deal_ is. But there is no deal. She's just good. Another big conflict is between her and a close friend who is bothered by the ease at which she moves past all trauma and forgives her enemies. Everyone assumes she's naive or hiding her true damage. She isn't.

Id say no. They dont NEED it, but it does give them an explainable reason and solid motivation for why they do what they do. I grew up with the likes of Spidey, Sonic, and Megaman X. 2 of these characters do good just because they can. 1 of these characters needed to be built up through trauma. And while they dont need trauma to be good, i believe eventually they will run into something that either makes or breaks them. Doesnt have to be at the beginning but eventually it WILL happen
@Ninja07Keaton
@Ninja07Keaton Год назад
Sonic isn't about trauma to begin with. Megaman X on the other hand has more trauma than most characters you could name. X is a pacifist fighting in the Maverick Wars. To him, killing the enemy is just as horrifying as killing an innocent. Everyone expects X to bring about a new world where everyone lives in peace, but that is not a realistic outcome in a world where machines are the same psychological level as humans. Humans struggle greatly with coexistence to begin with. Between destroying a myriad of enemies, trying(and failing)to fulfill the wishes of his creator, watching his best friend die twice, X has a considerable amount of trauma. And that's not even counting later on in the timeline when a copy of him basically became Reploid Stalin, and all the original X could do was watch from Cyberspace.
@chriss.249

@@Ninja07Keaton I never said sonic was about trauma, however, I can argue that sonic has had traumatic moments in his life. It doesn't effect him like it would others tho. My og statement when say 2 characters do good just because they can, had me referring to sonic and X. Xs whole deal is that he helps because he can. He didn't need trauma to start fighting for justice and peace. 👍🏾 Peter needed Ben to die so he could start his journey as a crime fighter. Yes, I know Xs trauma and life story are brutal asf. Trust me, I played the games. Almost daily actually😂 Id argue the few characters I know with trauma levels similar to X would be Subaru from re zero, some guy from dororo(I prolly fucked up the name), kimihoto from monster musume, Guts from berserk, and ppl who try the grimace shake👍🏾

I don't think every superhero needs trauma to be great, Wally West only has a few trauma compared to others yet it made him a whole lot interesting compared to others, because he chose to become a hero with a choice that he wants to help people, and I think that's part of the reason why he's the heart of JL in the animated series. I think Miles has the biggest opportunity to overturn the whole concept of Spider-Man as a whole, that not every Spider Story has to be tragic in order to be inspiring and interesting. Doing It Because You Want To > Responsibility and Guilt This idea just propels the character to greater lengths because there is rarely justification as to why they'd save people or become heroes in the first place.

@@HunneraProductions It's just like any other cliche. It works if it's done well, but if it's the form of a trauma story without the substance, it cheapens the subject. That's worse than a superhero story with no tragedy at all. Poor Ben Affleck's Daredevil comes to mind. Ben did his level best, but when character's brooding is obviously included to make him look cool, it does the opposite.

Not at all. It's entirely possible to be a good person without the guilt that constantly drives Spider-Man. Pavitra is perhaps the best example of this that's shown on-screen. He hasn't had his canon moment yet, but he's still choosing to actively save and help people without the trauma that it seems just about every Spider-Man carries. But that isn't to say that trauma and grief don't have their place- humans have this tendency to want to give our struggles and tragedies meaning beyond pointless suffering. And the idea that your suffering DOES have that meaning and further reinforces your life's purpose is a comforting thought. "If this never happened, I wouldn't be the person I am today" is not an uncommon phrase to hear, after all. But it doesn't mean that personal growth can only come from tragedy. Peter B. says it the best: "Bad things are gonna happen, it makes us who we are. But good things happen too, you know? Like you happened- and she happened." And personally? I want good people to be rewarded for their kindness and heroism- its not too much to ask that they deserve their own slice of happiness free from the guilt that motivates them all the time. And that sentiment isn't and shouldn't be limited to just Spider-Man

@@williamfinch9858 Not always While most people are quick to say that struggle and suffering builds character, it can in-fact do the exact opposite and cause a person to regress It just really depends on how the person in question reacts and the context it was placed in Spidey himself is a prime example. Without Uncle Ben, most of them wouldn't be doing what they do. And if you say they didn't need Uncle Ben to die to fuel their guilt to help people, Peter was toeing the line at being an asshole and awkward kid who wanted to get back at his bullies when he first got his powers. Feel free to read the original comics, I'm not making any of it up. Heroing and helping people was the last thing on his mind. It took Uncle Ben's death to motivate him to use his newfound gift to help others, even if it meant a detriment to his own personal life. Because being selfish is what lead Peter Parker to being Spider-Man, and he doesn't desire to relive that experience and trauma again

You don't need trauma to be a superhero. Superman grew up in a loving home. In some incarnations his dad dies, but it's always from something natural, never a crime. He never faced the trauma that often motivates heroes to go out and save others - to protect them from the pain they felt. If it was the case that you need to have some kind of motive to want to help, he would have become a cardiologist, to make sure no one has to die the way his father did. All you need is empathy, and the courage and strength to go out and fight. "Pain doesn't make people. It's love that makes people. The pain is inconsequential. It's love that saves them." Great video. Suffering doesn’t automatically equal sudden Superhero. Often, it makes said characters go down darker paths. It’s the people around them or that influences them to be good with their powers in times of trauma. It’s why Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man, and Bruce becomes and Batman, their parents and figures were good figures that raised them to be right. But we’ve also seen plenty of trauma that turns ordinary people into villains like Doc Ock, Mr Freeze, hell even Spider-Verse Kingpin with his family leaving. It’s why I love Hobie, he subtly asks Miles to be grateful for what he has as his trauma isn’t to the extent as others (ok, admittedly his Uncle Ben event was Uncle Aaron dying and that catalyses him to be a better person). Miles has a great set up with parents and yet he wants to be involved in a situation that will absolutely bring trauma, which tbh is him being naive and wanting to be closer with others without knowing the full situation. But Miles is exactly what you say, he has a lot of ground breaking potential. I hope Beyond elevates this theme.
@lordramaonalong-distancere3157
trauma never brought anything good to either peter or miles,It made peter go out for revenge and had he not realized that it was his how ondoing that brought that thug to ben and had it been a random thug he'd probably just get rid of him,not feel any better,and end up on a self destructing path while playing vigilante and eventually turning too weak willed and power hungry to resist something like the black suit and Miles really did only get on his right Mind mainly thanks to his Dad's support, peter and the spider gang for keeping him from basically killing himself while trying to get back at kingpin no matter what. honestly No amount of trauma gave "Spiderman" a porpose it was his willingness and ability to learn from it while realizing the true meaning of his responsabilitythat did so and those were qualitys that deep down he already pocessed.

He’s not stagnant and struggles but he doesn’t have a horrible or traumatic backstory, or at least not as traumatic as others. I did that in order to draw attention to the very title of the video and to subvert tropes like that. Compared to all the supporting cast, the MC has very simple motivations: He wants to be like the heroic figure that saved him when he was a child. But while he still has his own character arc and story, I'd best describe him is as a side character in everyone else's stories. I don't know if I'll be able to do the idea justice, but I though it would be an interesting idea to tell the stories of a bunch of different, possibly more interesting characters through the eyes of single supporting cast member, all while telling his own story too.

I don't think every character needs deep trauma to be great as it solely depends on the story. In the case of across the spiderverse it works because it makes Miguel the antagonist that he is. If he didn't get that trauma that he can't have his daughter no matter what then we wouldn't have a character who strives so hard to push people to follow through canon events; because he doesn't want people to experience a risk that can cost a dimension. It is an active device between two major characters who don't agree and are willing to do anything to prove their point.

Krypton and his birth parents were lost before he could grow attached to them, so his motivation for putting on a supersuit isn't that. It's simply to be a good person who just so happens to be possessed of immense power, as guided by the morals his Earth parents instilled in him. The idea that power by itself is NOT, in fact, a corruptive factor. As they say: "Power doesn't corrupt; it REVEALS." Something I have no sympathy for anymore is a sob story. It is written into every reality TV show. America's Got Talent for example. Everyone comes in with some tragic background or struggles to make it big. Sometimes it's terribly obvious that the show made them pick some random sad thing to bring up for the show. It is staged. It is lazy writing and if you really see it, you'll know that what makes someone talented, great, heroic, etc. isn't necessarily trauma. It can be one bad experience or something someone says. It can be inspiration and good influence. Those are the life experiences that hit home on a personal level. And that what Spiderman does. He looks out for the little guy. Not the whole world. Miles is truly "the best of all of us."

Honestly, this debate was the reason I've been apprehensive to watch this movie. Struggling in and of itself does not make a hero, the person in question has to be rooted in some form of morality prior to the traumatic moment. Thats what separate hero's and villains. This is also why I'm not fond of modern depiction of superheroes. Many of them come across as self centered and selfish, only using thier powers for personal gratification as opposed to a greater good she hulk is a good example of this mindset. Miles has the potential but like mcu spiderman there's just something missing. That being said, while i definitely believe tramua can be an excellent motivation for a hero they need to be rooted in morality otherwise they just become villains or she hulk. Keep up the good work.

I'm gonna be honest, Superman embodies the same kind of idea that Miles does in this movie. Sure, he has Krypton which is a sad thing in his past, but he didn't experience it, and it didn't influence his choice to become a superhero. The reason why he's a hero isn't because of some traumatic incident. It's simply because he was raised to believe that helping others is what was right.

Well the point of a tragic backstory 9 times out of 10 is to explain why they are doing this or why should we care. Take Batman classic tragic backstory watched his parents get killed in a robbery and wants to make sure it never happens. What happens if Bruce is Batman but without the tragic backstory. He sorta comes off as just some douche thrill seeker that happens fight crime but in fact is just beating up poor people that sorta have been dropped into this type of life. Also makes a lot of his effort and personality seems awful. He isn't very open because he went through something traumatic that is pretty understandable it happens to people with ptsd. If he acted like that with 0 catalyst then he is like a sociopath that is unnecessarily awful.
@williamfinch9858

If you're saying not knowing Batman's backstory makes him come across as a sociopath, then maybe Batman's actions weren't very heroic in the first place.
@chubiabu7920
@chubiabu7920 Год назад
I don't think their trauma defines them, but rather gives them perspective or a new direction. Batman for example lost his parents in the dark alleyway of a theater. He lived a rich, comfortable life and for the first time had to confront how ridden with crime Gotham was, hence becoming Batman. Superman lost a whole planet because the people of Krypton were divided and misused their resources to the point of the planet collapsing. Sound familiar? That's because that's Earth too. In Man of Steel, his holographic father talks about how Clark was sent here to guide them and prevent them from making the same mistakes they made on Krypton . I will also add that being a hero after trauma is a choice. We just as easily have villains who are born from trauma. Choosing to be a hero is refusing to be defined by that trauma. Sorrry for the long read, but if you made it here I hope you enjoyed :)

Maybe they do... to be GREAT. You cannot see things from a different perspective, until you have one, and what makes them GREAT as opposed to GOOD ENOUGH is a range and depth that supports a strong empathetic tie. A superhero without some type of trauma would not be able to truly empathize and self-sacrifice to the degree someone who lacks that experience and connection can. There is this odd "anti-trauma" philosophy permeating the culture over the past decade that is fairly strange to me in its's push, and think it is borderline dangerous. The theory that humans should have ZERO trauma for a perfect life is patently incorrect. There is no such thing as avoidance therapy. We get stronger from strong experiences, not a lack of them.
@ArroTarr
@ArroTarr Год назад
They don't exactly need trauma to be great, its not a be all end all, but at the end of the day every single person alive has some kind of trauma at one point or another, and a lot of decisions can be shaped and put to fruition BECUASE of that trauma. I think at least in the case of most Spider-man stories, trauma is a driver for their heroism. For example, insomniac Peter says that the work he and MJ do for the city make sure that todays kids can have their own adventures. He wants others to have good experiences because he knows what its like to lose and to grieve, and to NOT have good experiences. That also ties back to him blaming himself for bad things, which is a trauma response/coping mechanism. So while Heroes don't need trauma, it gives so much more depth to their characters because of how it shapes how they be the hero that others need
@huguy23

I honestly think that trauma is a solid way to write a character, it makes them more relatable, gives them a solid motivation to be better and to rise above the adversities. But i also think that a character can still be good without trauma, if its well exectuted of course.

I dont think they need a traumatic backstory and i honestly wish we had more heroes without it. I get that its the easiest tool for motivation but pain isn't the only motivation to help people. One of the reason why i like heroes like captain america and superman so much is because they aren't forged in personal trauma they just see other people need help and they had the power( or opportunity in cap's case) to help. It's a simple motivation but it's the only one we should need.

Superheroes having trauma became so much of a troupe that superheroes that can be great without it are more interesting characters to me, they basically have to carry the story with personality alone. In the comics it seems like Miles is more generic but he has a strong character in these movies and that's all that matters.

Honestly I think it’s less about the trauma and more about retelling the same stories over and over again. There’s a deleted scene from itsv where Peter says “ honestly don’t do it like me Miles you gotta do it like you”, and ever since I heard that after Atsv it makes it clear to me that they wanted to do something different with Miles, example being that peters stories are usually around responsibility but miles’ story is about living up to expectations and being told to do something without having any say in the matter. It’s very unrealistic to expect different people to have the same exact stories and motivations.

I think the key element is who or what is at fault. If Miles knows his father is going to die and willingly allows it to happen, he is opting to achieve a desired effect. If he doesn't know, then his hands are clean and it's a tragedy he has to learn to live with afterwards. It's kinda like the difference between a scientist who gets caught in an explosion in their lab and gets super powers vs. A scientist who intentionally causes the explosion for the purpose of getting super powers. The second one is the kind of thing villains are made of.

Trauma is cheap drama. It's effective, but it's lazy writing. It's also unimaginative, and indicates a lack of wisdom. There are those who will choose to be heroes simply because they wish to serve and protect. This often comes from a moral core that too many modern writers simply lack.

i don’t think it’s trauma, but when miles had to lose his uncle before he could even have his leap of faith and take control of himself as spiderman, and him learning of his future and being told to not do anything and that he isn’t deserving of spiderman, that has to be A LOT on his conscious. miles is going through a lot not just as spiderman, but as a kid. his story (as it’s being told to us) is not yet complete - he’s not gwen, he’s not peter b, he’s not hobie. they all have that confidence in themselves at least as spiderpeople, but miles doesn’t. also, i wouldn’t be shocked if spiderverse rio does pass. aaron and miles had a pretty concrete relationship that only shifted with his reveal as the prowler, and miles had to lose his mentor. miles relationship with his dad is rocky, we see that in into AND across, but with his mom? she gave that whole speech and everything, rio is a big part of his support system.
