Hi. I just discovered your channel, but I just wanted to leave a comment saying how much I enjoy your content (I may leave more comments as I watch more videos.) In particular, your point about "leaning into the weirdness" in this video, as well as your point about realizing that "novels are weird" in another video - and I know the two points are not really connected any more than through the use of the word "weird" - are just excellent points that I didn't realize I had been longing to hear on youtube. I am a PhD in literature myself, but I am mainly working with lyrics and lyric theory. I've never really been taught to read fiction or nonfiction. (According to some theorists, lyric poetry doesn't fall into either of these two categories.) It seems most literature people (whether it is "booktube" or the literary reviews/periodicals in my country) take for granted that "literature" means narrative fiction, and when it comes to nonfiction they don't question the authority of the approaches they have been taught. Anyway, watching your videos this week have been tremendously helpful to me. I hope you keep up this public service, that many students apply to your Great Books course, and that you get more views on your literature videos.
@@GreatBooksProf I'm doing a PhD on song lyrics. I'm developing a theory of political popular song lyrics and focusing on examples of environmentalism in popular music. So I am engaging both with lyric theories that have a pet peeve about the primacy of prose fiction in literary studies, but I am also going against the dominant tradition of lyric theory in my country (you could say my project is part of a "performative turn" in the field, which is a reaction to the "aesthetics of autonomy" that have dominated literary pedagogy since New Criticism.)

I recently started to read “the society of spectacle” and it is being difficult for me to understand it on english, si i changed to spanish (main language) and was totally the same result: hard to understand. I am agree about reading sometimes is weird.😂
