Training aggressive dogs are Tom Davis's specialty but is this dog actually aggressive? Tom travels to New Jersey to work with a family with a Golden Retriever dog with some aggression, anxiety, and fearful behavior. The family is afraid they might have to get rid of the dog or put the dog down because of his bad behavior.

Yes thank you for not bashing the PittBulls. Am a owner of a gentle male pittbull all 105 pounds of muscle it is all in how they are raised and socialize with other dog's and people. Most people are scared of his size and won't approach. Then are shocked to see how gentle and friendly he is.

@@jeffcoley668 I dont know why people do that honestly..My dog certainly isnt big, hes not small either..(hes a weird mix taken from a gypsy "settlement" by the local shelter. Theyre randomely mixed for about 40 years now so some of them come out a bit retarded I must admit. Mine looks like a border collie with a bit shorter hair and colors of a jack russell despite having no russell in his genes aparently :D)...and actually I intentionally go to these bigger muscular dogs - they mostly run faster and longer so I dont have to run with him for 2 hours every day myself :D If its aggressive or anything the owner will give you hits on the way and theres nothing easier than just changing directions or keeping distance most of the time. Also I love how all these old people are scared of my dog because their little maltese is barking, we go near and they almost always shut up :D

It's like they both got Issues that they haft to deal out, and once those issues are resolved they can interact together without aggression. I’ve tried so hard to explain this to my roommate. He got a puppy at 6 weeks old off of FB 🙄 and I kept telling him he needed to train her before she got bigger. Now she’s almost 7 months and she’s 1) Still not potty trained. 2) Hardly ever listens. 3) He lets her off leash and of course she runs around and won’t listen when he tells her to come back. 4) He feels like he has to say things 10+ times to get her to do it (sit, sit, sit, SIT SIT SIT) despite me telling him how to only say it ONCE. It’s a nightmare.

I love ALL of your videos, but the ones where Tom travels to different cities have been my favorites. Kudos to your production crew👍. Best of all was the compassion shown to the owner. She was presented so well in the video as a woman who loved both of her dogs, but had to make a very sacrificial decision. Tom LISTENED to her, and reinforced her decision without any negative judgment or pressure. Sometimes rehoming a pet is the best answer, but it's a gut wrenching choice. Excellent job, beginning to end!!!

Interesting, at least with my contact in Germany; I'm told with GSD's they begin tracking at 8 weeks of age. Protection at 1 year, obedience at some point right after that? Why so late on obedience? Germans feel obedience is a form of "punishment"; that's why it's last. In regard to protection, the American mentality is a dog should be in full control before engaging in protection training. Germans want the dog to be basically "wild" ; feeling like "superman/superwoman" when pursuing protection training.

Not really related to this video but what can be done about same sex aggression? I have a female Great Pyrenees mix and apparently that is a known thing. I had no idea until after being with us for a year she tried to kill my female shepherd mix. No signs that I saw. The day before they were playing and snuggling on the couch. The next day they squabbled I separated them for a few hours and when I released them the GP attacked. We like to never got them separated - she skinned one of my shepherds front legs and had multiple puncture wounds in her neck. Over $1000 in vet bills. We’re lucky she didn’t hit an artery. They are permanently separated but it means they spend a lot of time kenneled now since I can’t leave them loose while I work. And even at home if one is loose the other is kenneled. Especially now that all the kids are gone. My college daughter was home with schools closed for COVID when they fought. There is no way I could break up that fight alone.

I'm a fellow dog trainer with the same type of mentality and methods as you (why I love your channel!) and have been a trainer basically my entire life. I also worked at a county shelter for many years as a vet tech and eventually an ACO. The ONLY dog I have ever been bitten by, other than chihuahuas that haven't done any real damage, was a golden retriever. I was only 7 years old and he basically ran the neighborhood terrorizing everyone. No one ever did anything though because none of us blamed the dog...he was HORRIBLY abused by his owners and all of us felt bad for him. He did so much damage to me that I still have nasty scars 30 years later. He helped fuel my love of dogs and wanting to help as many as I can. RIP Woody

It was heartbreaking to see how anxious the golden was in the beginning. Having a two year old retriever and a six month old doodle puppy is a lot of energy in that house. I am so glad the owners reached out for help and took the lessons to heart. They made a hard decision that was in the best interests of the pup, and their family, and should be applauded for that. Great job, everyone!

Sad asf bro especially knowing how retrievers are they are one of the worst dogs for a “sit down and shut up” style they have so much love to give n for that to be shut down even unintentionally like this was just horrible to see

That’s insane to never take your dog for a walk…both dogs are so sweet and nice, the lack of exercise made them go crazy. Dogs are not object…sad to see the dog blamed all the time when the real problem is the owners

I love when you said you aren't married to anything and will see what works best for the dog. So many trainers and behaviorists (not many people know there is a difference) will only use one tool. It's the great ones like you that realize every dog is different. Respect everything you do.

I mean yes, but golden retrievers have long been known to have some issues with explosive, "sudden" aggression. Sudden aggression in terms that they are often known to not go through the overt progression of aggressive signaling that average people would look for to avoid a bite - think the opposite of rottweilers. This is an issues spanning over a decade already. I know people who work in veterinary practice, and all of them have been bitten by goldens, some really savagely. You cant even say the same of classically "aggressive" stereotyped breeds. Golden retrievers have also topped various bite statistics over the last decade +, but have managed to mostly fly under the radar of people who are fanatically afraid of "aggressive breeds". Golden breeders are also aware of this issue, and note that sport variety goldens seem not to have this issue.

@@TheBurrito171 Alternatively, golden are owned by people who don't train them properly or don't know how to look for the signs that the dog isn't happy. No dog explodes with sudden aggression. All dogs give signals, most people just aren't aware. No bad dogs.
@TheBurrito171
@TheBurrito171 2 года назад
@@sportysbusiness yes and no. "No bad dogs" doesnt mean that breeds or individuals cant have some issues or problematic genetic tendencies. Ive seen goldens on their 4th or 5th home, doing things that would get any mastiff or bully euthanized. I've seen goldens that will go straight from "Im a bit uncomfortable" to a bite. The one universal guarantee is that people will always walk circles to make excuses and deny that the dog has any issue , just because it is a golden retriever.

@@sportysbusiness Since adopting my AmStaff 4.5 years ago I’ve been reading a lot of pros and cons about “pit bull” type dogs. One claim I’ve seen pretty often is that these dogs “lie”- they act friendly, then attack. People who say this actually make it seem “pit bulls” purposely fool people in order to facilitate attacks. Then I noticed something else, irl and here on RU-vid: any time a dog wags it’s tail people react as if this means the dog is happy and friendly. They don’t understand that dogs wag their tail when they’re excited, when they’re submissive, when they’re friendly, when they’re agitated, etc. So it’s not that”pit bulls lie”, it’s that people really don’t understand dogs all that well. Dogs are more and more popular, but that also means more dogs are with people who don’t know best practices in dog training and stewardship.

I just wanted to let you know that you are the reason why I adopted my dog. I took it as a challenge to learn more about dogs and their behavior but I received so much more than that. I'm completely amazed as to what I was able to achieve and what my doggo achieved and I just wanted to say thank you. I literally watched so many of your videos and realized that a ton of people lack the knowledge of understanding dogs due to their own ignorance or lack of understanding of what it means to train your/a dog. I ended up buying your E collar as well and am amazed by how effective it is and how minimal the levels are actually used to get your dogs attention when off leash, and for vocal command training especially when my doggo isn't a foody. Please keep the videos going and thank you again!! For anyone reading this, I highly recommend Tom Davis's 280C E collar, literally amazing and definitely worth the price.

I've learned so much from your videos, so thank you! We have a recently blended family that not only included merging 4 children but also 4 dogs. My bernese/great Pyrenees mix (125 lbs) started guarding us from my boyfriend's husky (both male) and I was scared they would start fighting badly as things seemed to be escalating. I've worked hard on training them both together (as well as separately) using tips from your videos. I think my big guy sees that I also have control of the husky now and he doesn't need to jump in. He still likes to keep himself physically between the husky and my youngest son now and then, but the growling, barking and charging has stopped, and we all live peacefully with our big family. They will both sit, stay, and come when called almost in perfect unison. It is so rewarding to see!

Wow, a Great Per. AND a Husky?!? That’s a LOT of dog hair!! 😂 & lot of love. Awesome 👏🏽 thank you for your comment! (My dad had huskies when I was young!) When his favorite lady dog, Sebra, got an infection/disease from a vet stay (I don’t remember exactly what, I was very young) she was so sick, health deteriorated quickly… It’s the first time I ever saw my father cry. He never got another dog… I grew up with one of her puppies, Blue (kids named him, eyes were icy blue!) and he was my best friend…playmate, pillow, snuggle buddy, protector… I lost my father in 2010, this comment brought up some special memories for me, again, thank you. A few big snuggles to your doggos. 🥰. Blue, you were such a GOOD BOY!! Tom, Ty for all you do. Stay safe out there, be blessed!! 🤓🤘🏽💋🔮⚖️

Mad respect to the woman for giving up her ADORABLE puppy in order to give the best life to each dog. I 100% agree with her decision and think this move will greatly improve her golden’s behavioral issues bc she will be able to spend the time, energy, and focus on him while the puppy would be able to get the training, attention, and stimulation he deserves elsewhere.

If it wasn’t for Tom and his videos I would not have been able to keep and train an 8 yr old country dog with no lease training. He lunged at anything with wheels and was aggressive with other dogs, squirrels, cats and unfriendly with strangers. He’s now a 80lb lab mountain cur lover of people and most other animals. He’s not perfect, but after a year and a half he’s a far cry from how I got him. You can train an old dog and I mean a 73 yr old woman. Thank you Tom

Such awesome advice with the puppy! My GSD was heeling off leash at 5 months, and I got so much shit for crate training, scheduling, and having tight structure. If you don’t put in the work early on, you will run in into problems.
