Not just vocals too. When I’m producing I’m gain staging and light mixing as I go and yeah everything is quieter but it’s always better to turn up then turn down when you get to the final stages of mixing/mastering.

Do you not recommend using the normalize button in FL? I record through there and it’s low and I just press normalize and it sounds perfect, no clipping either but I noticed you don’t press normalize in these vids.

When I was getting back into producing I was doing that to my sounds. Big mistake. Later on when I got to the mastering process of my songs (with vocals) I was having to turn down stems because of artifacts from sounds being too loud during mixing and just in general from gain staging. You can do what you want but if you just keep the vocals recorded in the range he is talking about I promise you will be golden. He’s a professional engineer and I know engineers and this is what they’re doing too. You will get the level of volume you want during mixing/mastering.

Nah not really, you can use pretty much any decent one and still record vocals in the green zone. cuz even with my volt 276 , I keep my levels in the green

Does having the interface gain at 0 and then feeding the mic into a preamp plugin (mic input) same as using an external preamp into the interface (with the gain at 0 as well)? cause i just have a hard time understanding how you would leave the interface’s gain at 0, won’t that introduce alot of noise when u apply compression

No. You didn’t hear any noise from anything. I added a pre amp and a compressor and there’s no noise. plus when I use my neve pre amp it’s the same but I push it harder to have the “noise” because that’s what the neve is known for around 40-50 on the input and doesn’t have any issues with adding compression afterwards

@@SKYJORDXNI’m just mind blown, i never thought of using preamp plugins like that, i would always make my vocals hit around -18 (using clean interface gain) and then use a preamp plugin and provide extra gain ( i used line gain not mic gain) Thanks for the response.

@ewanyoumean7986 I like to recreate the studio workflow so I like to have the pre’s power the mic and have it already on the vocal (printed) so that’ll be the vocal to be worked with etc. But there’s a lot of ways to make it work tho.

I used the fl pre amp the other day while recording because of this video and it definitely helped thanks for the helpful content, it is weird that the pre amp on the volt 276 does not boost the signal enough for me and I have to add another pre amp. that’s the interface I’m running with

Long as they in the green. I usually like my vocals around -10 before compression. Go studio is by far the easiest daw to record it.

Yep the green will always be the place to be . Cuz a lot of ppl have their own preferences about what numbers they want to hit but at least we have a zone to cover

Just to double check in a Logic Pro sense did you put the gain to a -10? And left the volume on 0.0? Or did you put down the volume to -10? By volume I mean the level thing that controls plug in intensity

@topeakinrogbe4530 via pre amp, a pre amp is what powers the mic in a studio and the compressor controls peaks & they are printed on the vocal so the vocal is already processed.

Nearly any interface, made in the last 10 years, will have significantly better A>D conversion than any USB mic that's ever been made. But.. do what you like, ofc.
