I would never state that you never have to use terminal at all but overall I conclude agreement with your statement in that the absolute vast majority of all situations you usually don't need to deal with the terminal. I want to ideal dual boot Windows with Linux for extended support on Steam incase they deprecate Windows 10 so I can do what I need on Windows 10 I like Windows 10 more than Windows 11 but think Windows 7 will always remain king of the Windows Operating System I tried out Garuda Dragonized for a week so far games are all optimized including Minecraft I've been a Windows kid all my life I wish Valve would just force people to use Linux for gaming instead of Windows I am tired of this enforced Microsoft Account propaganda apparently Garuda Dragonized has a BlackArch sub system which is neat you can use it on there everything is still faster on Windows 10 and I can't activate all my cores Linux needs to do something about this to copy Windows because they still allow overclocking where Linux does not enable your cores for overclocking unless I haven't found it yet.

Two of the biggest draw cards for Linux are, Privacy and security, as an IT pro myself Ive been using windows since 3.11/NT and seen it evolve over the years, windows 7 was the last windows OS I used for personal use, anything after that I wouldn't touch for personal use except for a "modified" version of windows that I have running as a virtual machine and that's only for a couple of apps not available on Linux. I switched to Ubuntu then onto Mint and have used Mint since, you'd be surprised how much you can get done with Linux as a daily driver, and Mint IMO is a good starting point for windows users partly because it's got a similar layout so users can quickly get familiar with it also it's one of the easier distros to use, of course with Linux you always have the option to dive into the power of the terminal if you wish.😀

@@MrTubeuser12 this is going to sound like a stupid question, but are drivers interchangeable between windows and Linux?
@MrTubeuser12
@MrTubeuser12 2 месяца назад
@@xdsmastermia unfortunately no, Linux has it's own drivers, that said Linux does support quite a broad range of hardware with it's built in open source drivers. my advice would be to do a little research first, you can google "my hardware" Linux support, most generic hardware works well and more and more hardware vendors are supporting Linux. just a note, Linux will run quite well on most desktops/laptops straight out of the box for general use, people sometimes get an old laptop or off-lease desktop for cheap and use that to "tinker" with Linux. the other option is to run Linux as a virtual machine, this is slightly more technical but free.

@MrSaywutnow
@MrSaywutnow Месяц назад
@@AskYourComputerGuy I've been using Mint for just over two months now, based off the recommendation of a coworker (he also suggested Pop!OS). It's been a delight. It really goes out of its way to be easy to use. It should also be pointed out that most Linux distros allow you to boot into a live session off a USB drive - this lets you test drive the OS before installing it, and more importantly, check to see if you have any hardware compatibility issues. The most common issues are wifi (some chipsets don't have Linux drivers), and nVidia graphics cards (it's a non-issue with some distros like MInt, and a bit of a pain with others). Printers could also be an issue, but my MFC seems to work just fine. It's important to do your research before picking and installing a distro. A lot of people don't - they leap without looking, encounter a problem that can easily be avoided or fixed, and then they get frustrated and quit in a huff. For all the advances Linux has made over the years (I first experimented with Linux back in 2003), it's still an environment that doesn't hold your hand every step of the way like Windows does, and that will simply not make it a good fit for some people. As for gaming, Linux is very viable. I was shocked to discover that roughly a third of my Steam library (of hundreds of games) is Linux native, and I can count with my fingers the number of games that are listed as not compatible with Proton. Out of the games that I have played on Linux so far, they've either worked perfectly out-of-the box, or have required only minor tweaks in launch options to get working perfectly.

There is about 6 h video about basics of Linux. I haven't watched it all but the start is enlightening. Joining forums and asking questions helped me a lot. Also chat gpt seems to be mostly on my side. Right now I have still my main pc running Win10, laptop wit LMDE, learning, and now having Win11 on the go on a bootable usb to use Win11 whenever. All backed up. Plus, in a process of fixing old laptop that used to run Vistas which will get some light Linux distro able to run on 32bit systems, as MS isn't particularly environmentally friendly. Linux allows us to use old machines that are still strong to run, just the big boss decided they don't fancy keeping them safe. Linux is our friend. Just take it easy.

@@xdsmastermia Linux has distros that are designed for old hardware. In my opinion "Puppy Linux" is the best distro for this. I grabbed my 1999 packard bell a few years ago and it ran on puppy linux. That's an extreme - that computer had almost no RAM. Another option is to run a light version of Ubuntu , e.g xubuntu, that uses less RAM. You could also run a linux firewall on an old computer such as pfsense. Well, technically pfsense is BSD and not linux. Lots of options for old and even ancient computers!

Thank you for the suggestion to the DistroSea site. Bookmarked! 👍 I switched to OS/2 from DOS back in 1992. That came, that went. During the 2000's, dealing with being back on Windows, I was really missing the promises IBM made about OS/2. In 2004, I tried out a first customer deployment of Linux on server / firewall devices. We went with Debian Sarge back then. In 2007, I tried Linux on the desktop, with Ubuntu 7.04. Then finally desktop Linux was useful, with the old Gnome desktop. Unfortunately Ubuntu tried their Unity interface project, and I fled to the Xfce desktop environment found in Xubuntu. That is very much similar to OS/2's Workplace Shell interface. So I started using OS/2 in 1992, and today I run "OS/3"! 😎 And actually this week I am back coding a hobby project in OS/2 using the VisPro Rexx development environment. Nostalgia. 🥳

Linux dominates the computer recycling industry. Places that take used computers, wipe them, put Linux on them, and sell the computer at a low price to eligible people. From my experience in such places, a custom spin of Ubuntu is usually there with software catered for an older demographic. The people who buy the computers, no joke, have sometimes never used a computer before. Yet they have few issues with leaning Linux.

Like Ubuntu. Not the Linux derivative, but the Social Organization and Interconnectedness. I should correct myself. I have always understood computers, until recently. As manufacturers "improve" computers and technology to meet the needs of Society, I seem to understand computers less. Seems I have deep issues with Society. Fascinating. :)

Linux user for more than 20 years here. DON"T remove your Windows installation and replace it with Linux - you will have an unpleasant experience. Make a Linux virtual machine on Windows, or run Linux from a flash drive or on a second computer. Switch gradually, that's the key. Another way is to install Open Source applications on your Windows box and use them instead of the proprietary ones for a while. If you switch to Open Source software, that runs on Linux and Windows, the switch to Linux as the underlying OS will be easier. Good luck!

. Grub and windows bootloader have never been designed to and still aren't designed to play nicely together. One always overwrites the other I always tell Linux beginners install whatever Linux operating system into a separate SSD and only after you have disabled fast start up a quick start up both in the graphical Windows desktop and one's UEFI bios AKA setup menu, then also while the windows Drive is completely disconnected then one can boot into the Linux distributions live desktop to begin installation process After that one can properly power down the machine reconnect the windows drive and then that person has a true safe enough dual booting multi operating system moral computer that they can toggle back and forth between booting either operating system world at any time without the two ever crossing paths

Thanks for your honesty. I have been using MS for many years but their constant incursion on privacy is making me move one of my platforms over to LINUX. For me it's simple- I don't want co-pilot, recall or any form of AI or to have my disc encrypted upon installation, ergo the possible switch. I have external hard drives to back up both platforms and other security enhancements that don't include DISK ENCRYPTION. I refuse to spend money on buying a system that will automatically ENCRYPT MY HARDDRIVE, thereby giving MS AUTOMATIC TOTAL RECALL, VIA MY HARD DRIVE. What's funny is MS already has this in the form of earlier additions of WINDOWS. NOTE: Not everyone wants AI, RECALL, CO-PILOT OR AUTOMATIC DISK ENCRYPTION! Your honesty is one of the reasons I have subscribed to your channel.

Same dual-boot here - BUT I de-cluttered Windows 10 and denied it internet access so it stays lean and fast, whilst I play retro games like Warcraft II, which is no longer working on Mint because Mint automatically mounts that Warcraft II disk as two devices. This results in DOS Box not accessing the disk to "prove" I own it. That early Windows 10 load does not mount the disk as two devices and lets me carry on.

That's not to say that choice is superior, but if you can deal with some distro-hopping it's fairly easy to find an out-of-the-box experience that suits you perfectly (without needing any major post-install scripts).

I am a MCSE (MCP + Internet) . I am also a hobbyist with computers. Therefore, I have undertaken learning OSs from OS9 (Perkin-Elmer), VMS, OS9 (IBM), Windows 2- 10 (hate 11 so I won't go with that), Unix, various Apple OSs, and even Commodore 64, 128, along with CPM and DOS. Of course Linux, from the original through today's versions. I don't know every desktop for every distro though. Can't say I am expert on any of them, but can get around CLI through windowed environments. (I am old, they can get somewhat mixed up in my RAM.) For those that are Windows 10 and earlier users, with the exception of "Gamers", I have to recommend any Ubuntu or Debian distribution, but with the addition of the Cinnamon desktop. Linux Mint would likely be the easiest to use for them, again with the Cinnamon version. The default applications/programs will do just about anything they want. The only issue when installing would be that they need to go to the Administration, then Driver Manager and have it run. The install the proprietary drivers there. (Specifically the one for WiFi.) To do that they would also need a wired Ethernet connection upon the first run. After a reboot, they can remove the Ethernet line and configure their WiFi for their computer.

I bring a warning: Linux tends to need some tinkering and tweaking to suit your needs if you use your computer for more than just MS-Office-type work. It's gotten better about that over the years- the tinkering is largely just for edge-cases and making specialty programs work. Still, you're trading away your time to save money. I also bring a tip: If you DO have that one nerd in your life pestering you to switch to Linux, have them do the heavy lifting on the research, then just try out the distros they come back with. They have the knowledge- or know how to get it- and probably want you to think of the switch as a good decision. That said, I kind of like Ubuntu and xubuntu. I use mint to revive old computers people want to keep as a backup/guest computer, but ubuntu and xubuntu are my standard and lightweight playgrounds respectively. That's mainly/entirely because I figured out how to get global surround sound emulation in headphones, set up my own home-wide music system and get a 1920x1080p desktop-size on a 1366x768 monitor in the Ubuntu family. Aaand also because it's the most well-adapted distro on WSL2 in my experience.

I prefer ubuntu because its usually supported but its not super important, choose an os for the applications you are supposed to run, not because of taste or looks. One big difference is that linux use shared libraries (how dlls were supposed to work once upon a time), this tends to create issues at times, you can circumvent this with flatpack which ofc have some concequences. Casual desktop linux is in most cases as easy as running windows today.

The original comment here is both 100% spot on; yet not 100% accurate anymore; at least in my Linux experience. Die hards think anyone can just jump ship, which certainly not true; however, I finally came across a distro that is looking promising - Garuda. The problem I have always had with switching from Windows other than it has been my career for over thirty years and I *must* keep up with whatever Micro$oft is doing is that I couldn’t run the software I wanted in Linux. Garuda (XFCE for me, I don’t need the eye candy of their main Dragonized version) has made setting up Bottles (wine on steroids) a click and use process. Along with Wine, Lutris, and a plethora of game emulators. With Bottles, I have installed my favorite MMO and it runs about 90 to 95% as well as it does in Windows. It would be 100% but mouse control isn’t quite there yet. Bottles sets up a C:\ with all the main folders, Registry, etc… and looking at the underlying structure is like looking at my Windows 11 main PC. I started out on a TRS-80 Model III with a cassette for storage, then DOS 3.x up to 6.x, then Window 3.1, 95, 98, XP, 2000, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, now 11 along with Server 2003, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, 2102 R2, 2016, 2019, now 2022. I own three Mac “cheese grater” Pros, a 2008 and two 2010’s Garuda is the first distro that I’ve ever dabble with, starting with Ubunt’cha’crap in 2008 being my first attempt, to Mandrake, Mint, Manjaro, full on Arch (installed the load of manure arch way) which I dual booted with Windows 10, and so many I forget the name in a VM… to ever make me truly consider running Linux full time with Windows 10 or 11 IoT LTSC in a virt VM. The only thing stopping me, getting Pulse Secure to work properly. One, one program is acting like the Hoover Dam. I’m about to experiment with it in Bottles to see if connecting there will allow me to open my work from home RDP sessions. If not, well, I have Windows IoT virtual I can connect to work with.

G'day Scott, Thanks for the comparison website. I'll check it out. I'm NOT a tech person, although my son is. 😊 When Win7 stopped being supported, he installed Ubuntu on my PC. Yeah, gone were the typical Word & Excel etc, but it came with Libre Office. Nowdays, I just use Google Docs, etc. Limitations; absolutely. Specialised software won't work, but people need not be scared of Linux. In some ways, it's simpler. Anyone who might consider a Windows S-Mode PC or a Chromebook could find Linux very suitable because of the built-in software package manager which has heaps of programs you can install without going near the Linux terminal.

If you have a lot of disk space try the distros in a vertual mashine. I have done that and have 7 distros on the same Windows 10 pro mashine. placed in 7 folders. The mashine shall have at least 8 GB of ram and a fair cpu. I have done it on hardware form 2011. 8 GB of ram and an FX 4100 cpu. It's good to have them installed correct so that you can tjek if printers and other conneted hardware works proporly before you make a clean install on the drive.

My most favorite and preferred flavor of Linux is Xubuntu, because it utilizes a desktop environment that doesn't use up most of your graphics card memory (Xfce). Personally, I don't really require a lot from Linux, so I'm more of a lightweight Linux distro guy. I'd rather install the base OS than have a Linux distro that contains a lot of bloatware (I'm looking at you, Ubuntu).

@MrTubeuser12
@MrTubeuser12 2 месяца назад
@@ashimoanameyjoshuahassan6844 Ubuntu can be heavy or light, what makes it so, and this applies to a lot of distro's, is the desktop environment, eg KDE desktop can make Ubuntu resource hungry because it has a lot of "bling", on the other hand, as mentioned, xfce or even flux-box can make it quite light and fast. however, having a "stripped down" environment can have it's draw backs because a lot of the "tools" required to make some apps work aren't there and you could end up installing these to get it working and just end up with a full-fat OS again, like wise with all the pre-installed apps, but these can just be deleted anyway. my first thought would be, "what do I want to do with this" and look at what best suits that and go from there.

I was using very few commercial applications, so moving over to Ubuntu was easy in 2009. But if you're used to running adobe etc., finding substitutes takes time. I do run Goldwave under Wine, because I like the features better than on audacity.

I assume that audio is your aim. It's mine too! You can do better than Goldwave IMHO. I run Reaper on Ubuntu Studio. Reaper doesn't need WINE. Does audio editing. Can do video editing well enough too, at least as well as Goldwave. If you need a class compliant audio interface then Scarlett focusrite is the go. I use that for Linux.

I checked this out a ways back and the application is interesting. About all I do is edit on the .WAV level, and I already own the Goldwave license. So I'm staying where I'm at for the moment. @@AskYourComputerGuy *nods humbly* It really boils down to our success with convincing and helping certain Windows users who are curious about Linux and who you are finally waking up to the fact that they don't own their own computers if they boot into windows and it's connected online depends upon mainly three things 1. That Windows users will to unlike his or her brain and to learn some new things and practice using those new things enough to where it becomes a bigger part of him or her as his or her own beating heart and accept the fact that he or she did not learn how to use Windows overnight let alone over the course of a single week and that learning Linux world will be no different and to have the patience involved in that with oneself and being patient with a Linux world 2. Us experienced Linux users being patient and generous enough to be forthcoming with enough information up front that the windows user who is visiting the Linux world we'll know how to avoid certain pitfalls that are most damaging and that will cause that beginner Linux user to get the wrong idea about the Linux world and thus going back to the windows world like a little idiotic 4 year old who doesn't have a clue what's going on in life yet 3. It is up to us Linux experience users when we give information to be forthcoming enough to explain why certain things are the way they are or how they work, but as well as offer if possible alternate Avenues of information such as specific forum sites Forums.linuxmint.com has been nothing but a blessing to me for well over 10 years easily. Forum members such as smg, Andymh,( the head Foxclone dev), rene, all41, xenopeek,sleeper12, Pjotr, smurphos, and easily a fozen more have helped not only me progress to what I know today but so many thousands of others across many years of time and not only just with Linux Mint but coherent distributions involving Ubuntu and even Zorn OS and occasionally even Windows users who were trying to run Windows in a virtual machine and primarily deal with only Windows issues inside of it Points number 2 and 3 basically boil down to the experience Linux user illustrating the heart of a teacher with the patience of a saint running in perfect balance If all three points can be achieved as they have been a little by little across the years especially since the days of proton and its infancy and in its young puberty years as well as other improvements involving wine and Lutris.... then given the next upcoming version of mint you're probably going to see a reasonable increase in the growth of people going to Linux world

You would have to create an EFI partition for the Linux os and I have had obe OS destroy the EFI partition of the other. It is best to hace Linux on a separate drive so that doesn't happen. If using Linux from a Windows 11 setup, will need to disable secure boot in the bios and tell it to use the Linux boot manager and not Windows' other wise it will probably keep booting Windows and ignoring your Linux install. You will then need to add Windows to the Linux boot loader since you can't add Linux to the Windows 11 boot loader.
