Better than a soil amendment, this garden hack using wood chips or mulch, will change and improve your poor or clay garden soil. Basically you’ll turn bad soil to good soil for plants. We talk about the science behind the benefits of mulch using wood chips to improve difficult poor or compacted soil for a healthier garden. You see how and why you should use arborist wood chips that are often free. It even helps clay soil become better for growing healthy plants.

I made the mistake of selecting a very barren clay-like soil for my garden. There was little to no life. I visit my local recycling center and pick up woodchips but I would never have enough. I heard of chipdrop, they gave me a mountain of wood chips it took months if not a year to scatter it around the yard 😂 my garden then had 6in of wood chips! Two years later and my garden is so full of life! Underneath the decomposing wood chips, rolly pollies are earthworms everywhere I dig. Very happy

I had wood chips dropped off at my house from workers that cut trees and bushes from the sides of the road. I have been fighting Bittersweet, an invasive vine that is almost impossible to kill. The load I just got was from two big trees they chewed up. It will be used in my veggie garden to keep weeds out.

This is what I use in my chicken yard. After I had french drains installed to run through it, the ground was tore up and just plain dirt. I covered it with Douglas fir chips to help keep my chickens feet from getting muddy. It worked, but come summer time, I needed to rake some of it away to keep the hens cool. I noticed lots of fleas in the chips. How can you combat parasites in the wood chips. I ended up ordering elector psp to spray the chips ..

That last sentence is kind of important. Countless videos on the Nitrogen issue. I thought the wood would decompose into the soil and steal the nitrogen. I had like 8 tree stumps ground up so I have a decent amount of wood chips, but it's all mixed with soil and roots and branches. I just left it in a heap in very back of yard by a fence. I did some serious labor raking and shoveling out the wood parts as best I could, from the areas I wanted to grass, to get it to the back into that heap. I am curious how long it will take for the heaps to become soil. I thought I would need to add greens and food scraps and turn it. If decomposes naturally, that would be great.

I just had a large tree stump ground and got a lot of wood chips from it. I mulched some areas in my backyard (which is heavy clay) and everything you said is exactly what I wanted to hear. I only put about a two to three layer, and it sounds like I could benefit by going thicker? Thanks for your advice!

Yes definitely! 6-12” and a year or 2 to break down will be a tremendous improvement to your soil.

Throw a thin layer of shredded hard wood bark mulch or pine bark mulch ok top. Here I often put pine needles on top. But we have an abundance of those here in NC.

Thank you for the reminder! Chip Drop had me scheduled to receive a load of wood chips that never came.🤷🏽‍♀️ I need to call them again. I also plan to use your technique putting down wood chips with compost and plant that way so thanks for that!💚🪴🌷 I really enjoy your videos.

I was never able to get a chip drop. So I googled local tree services and called around until I found some willing to drop them for me.

I have had a request or two go unanswered by ChipDrop for a while, but when I offered $20 somebody drops it off really quickly. It probably helps that I live quite near a couple of arborist companies. The previous time I got a drop of wood chips it was a very big load, and started to put out a large amount of mold spores while I was moving it to the garden. I then fell very ill with a respiratory infection, really extremely sick (I coughed so long and violently that I fractured my sternum). This was in very early 2020. Of course it wasn't a fungal infection, it was Covid, but I'd still wear an N95 mask when moving a really sporific load of wood chips. I have recently received a new supply of wood chips and (after three years) our garden was desperate for the organic matter. It made me SO happy to apply it, and I know that it will help our garden survive the coming Fire Season (formerly called Summer, a quaint term). You can't have enough of wood chips in your garden.
