Do This EVERY Morning! (WORKOUT OR NOT)

It doesn’t matter whether you have a workout planned for the day or not, you are going to want to do what I’m showing you in this video every single morning. This 2 minute and 30 second routine is something that is going to help you improve your posture, abs and even your grip strength. Not to mention, if you stay consistent with this, you will have a way to determine whether or not your workouts are causing your CNS to burnout a bit and that you might need added recovery.

The first thing you need to do in the first 30 seconds of rolling out of bed is drink 20-24 ounces of water. We are chronically dehydrated and we often times forget how important it is to start our day off by rehydrating after being asleep for the last 6 to 8 hours. We often just get up and get on our way without making a concerted effort to replenish the water that we have lost and not taken in while asleep.
This can have a dramatic impact on the energy levels we have throughout the rest of the day, our ability to focus and the amount of strength we can output when we hit the gym for our workout. I do this by keeping two bottles of lukewarm bottled water by my bathroom sink that I ingest quickly after waking up. This portion of the morning routine should take no more than 30 seconds.
Next, I walk towards my closet, but not to start picking out my outfit. Instead, I make a pitstop at the pullup bar that I have hanging over the doorway. Here I take 2 minutes to hang from the bar (each one with a different intention) to complete my morning routine. The first is a one minute decompression hang. The goal here is to try and decompress my spine and do a dead arm hang from the bar.
It helps to keep your feet lightly in contact with the ground so you can drop your pelvis and feel as if the weight of it is stretching out your hips and lower back. Beyond that however, you want to try and address the lack of thoracic extension that we get by being in a slumped posture throughout much of the day and even at night when our heads are propped up on a pillow. Here, you want to reach your head through to improve the extension of your spine and help to correct this with consistent daily efforts.
Of course, the accumulated hang time between this and the second minute we are about to embark on will help to increase the strength of your grip and forearms. Regarding the second minute, now you want to try and engage your abs by lifting your feet off the ground and hollowing out your lower abs. Do not just hang here, instead engage the shoulder blades as well to get better shoulder stability. The goal of this movement is to be able to hold it for one minute as well.
And there you have it. That is a simple routine that you can do every single morning regardless of whether you have a workout planned for that day or not. The amount of work being done here is not enough to cause you to fatigue or negatively impact your workout later on but is going to have an impact when it is done consistently every morning.
If you are looking for a complete workout and diet routine that you can follow to get ripped abs and athletic muscle year round, then head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. If you want to look like an athlete you have to train like an athlete and this is my step by step system for doing it.

If you've ever watched his videos, before trying to get you to buy his programs, he emphasizes the importance of finding an exercise and nutritional routine that you can do over a lifetime, longevity, whether it be with his programs or not the important thing is to find what works for you for a lifetime.

I've personally been hanging from a pullup bar for anywhere between 2-5 minutes a day for the past three months now and the results are incredible. I've gone from only being able to hang for one minute to now being able to go two minutes. The decompression of the lumbar spine after a long workout is also very satisfying. Great job once again Jeff at informing many people of a simple gesture that can truly benefit you.

man i have lower back problems too, and i found out recently that mine were linked directly to my workout ( cause we all know that you need to go hard or go home haha), and ive went to a medic who just did like some kind of massage on the back side ( he was pressing hard on some points near lower back) and i was completely fine after that, of course after some workouts it came back, beacuse of the muscle tension (who kinda remain a lilttle bit contracted even after i finish the workout) as the doctor said, but i can do it monthly since it really erases the problem. so if you really feel you have a problem with that i recommand you to try this, maybe it will completley solve your problem too.

@SouthJerseyMatt thanks for asking. 4 yrs ago, I was on my grind. Lost 37lbs, reached my target weight of 180lbs at 6 ft tail, I got off of blood pressure meds (which was my main goal) and maintained a healthy lifestyle for a few yrs. Unfortunately, the pandemic threw things off and then I tore my rotator cuff in my dominate shoulder. I had surgery this past January. Unfortunately I gained back about half the weight. I'm finally starting to feel stronger and have been getting back to it. It hasn't been easy but I'm motivated to get back to where I was and continue to build day by day.

A HELPFUL TIP: If you see anything in a video that you feel like you can't do or that you don't believe you can do... just make it easier to do. For example, he says to hang for 1 minute and then do the ab hold for one minute. A lot of people won't actually implement this in their life because that's a bit too much of a change for them. Basically, if your mind perceives something as being too difficult, you won't do it because your mind is unwilling to change to that extent right now. The mind is a creature of habit. It doesn't want to make big changes. So, in order to fix this, you can either increase your willingness to change (difficult) or decrease the difficulty of the item in question (easy). In essence, we simply have to make the goal easier to accomplish, and then we can increase the difficulty over time. Instead of starting with the 1 minute, what feels do-able to you? Maybe you don't even HAVE a pullup bar. Well, maybe buying one is a good first step for you. Then, when you get one, your next step can be assembling it and putting it up in your bathroom, for example. Then, the next day, you can wake up and hang for 5 or 10 seconds. Maybe you finish that and think, hey that was pretty easy, I think I'll hang for another 10 seconds. Guess what? Now you've just succeeded 3 times in a row before you even did your first hang. This is how you build up cumulative successes and reach goals very easily and have a lot of fun/motivation doing it. Everyone is different, and this isn't a race. You're in the game of life to have fun and enjoy yourself. If you make it easier for you to win, you'll have a much more enjoyable life and you'll get the things you want much more easily. Principles at play here: Life can be classified as a game You make the rules in your life Make the rules so that it's easy for you to "win" Winning = Success Success = More success - "Success breeds success" - Each success, no matter how small, will motivate you to get more success AKA the Motivation cycle, momentum cycle, or snowball effect

*Summary:* Drink a lot of water when you wake up because your dehydrated when sleeping. Hanging from the bar improves posture, grip strength and abs. When you hang, drop the pelvis, this also decompresses the lumbar spine. It also gives good thoracic extension when you reach your head through.

That's really good stuff Jeff, thanks for taking the time to shoot and post this. As soon as I get my power cage put up in the garage (need to paint the floor first) I'll do this every morning. Also, to develop practical grip and forearm strength, I have children's tennis balls, and I practice trying to squeeze them hard, do a set of fingers, then a set of thumbs, both to failure.

I'm dealing with a lot of concussion issues right now but once I'm better I'm going to jump right into exercise. I've started with this exercise though about 2 months ago and when I first started I could do the first one for about 5 seconds and the second one for about 2 seconds. Today I did it for 40 seconds and 8 seconds. I'm noticing an improvement in my grip strength big time. I cant wait to start working out and putting all your advice to good use!!

Great for shoulder impingement. Start out hanging 15 sec with light toe touch; work daily until you can do full minute hang of 3 sets. Shoulder stiffness and pain will be cured. Unless you have a tear or some other injury.
