Yes, I remember struggling as an apprentice and the older guy watched me struggle for a bit then showed me the proper way. He seemed to get a kick outta watching us struggle though 😂

Carpenters are generally the worst teachers there are. They act like theyre some rock start doing magical brain surgery or something. Its like how about if your soooo good, you teach me how to pull lay out and not get frustrated in 2 seconds.

The trick I use is go in straight only just enough that maybe more than half the top is in, then tilt to your angle. Never really had a need to reverse it unless I go too deep initially

I like reversing it and “drilling” it by screwing in reverse at the angle you want so it never goes forward but you still have a decent pilot hole

Not to brag, but just today I discovered this on my own. The one difference for me is after I reversed the screw out, I did not keep it in reverse. I switched back to clockwise to finish screwing.

That’s why you use “Structural” Screws. You’d never tie down trusts like that with a nail since shear isn’t the problem anyways you’re tying it down

Im so happy to see videos like this beginning trades tricks and tips would have helped years ago whrn all the old men just expected you to know and get mad and show you. Thats why most people dont wanna go in the trades because of grumpy ball busting dudes. And theor info is gonna die with them.

@@BillDaBurgerEater My baby boomer stepdad when I was 16 asked me if I wanted to learn to drive in his stick shift jeep. I really wanted to learn stick shift because I thought it was badass. His idea of "teaching" me to drive stick was to keep laughing everytime I stalled and refuse to tell me what I was doing wrong, until I said "Let's go home", it took many years later until I learned from an older (but not boomer) Gen X co-worker to let me drive myself home in her car while she pounded beers...because she was chill I learned super quick. Boomers LOVE holding the stupidest little thing they know that you don't over you, not sure why. It's literally like they never outgrew toddlerhood.

Use a taper bit counter sink for a cleaner hole. To answer other comments about nails structural rated screw has 3 times higher shear rating than nail and 4 times higher rating on pull out

Always great stuff! This time though the bracket to the left is what we call hurricane clips. That is because those screws will pull right out over hurricane winds !

You know this is just a shed, right? No amount of hurricane clips will keep it in place if you get hit by a hurricane and also hurricanes virtually do not exist in Canada :)

​@@patty109109 depends on location. Clips are required in hurricane prone areas at minimum. Straps or double wrapped straps preferred. Won't be able to get home owner insurance without at least clips. But since the board to the left had a clip, I assume he is doing toenail and clips.

Thanks for the tip. Here's one for you: always wear safety glasses when handling any tools: you never puncture your cornea, it saves time being driven to the hospital, it saves money (since in the U.S. you have to pay doctors to fix you up) and you look better with both eyes and no giant gouges out of your face!

That’s very good, but, if I were building a home, I’d invest in the “hurricane brackets” shown next to that angle screw job. They make your roof rafters stronger against being blown off in high winds.

Simpson makes a structural screw that replaces hurricane ties. SDWC. They have a QuikStik extension tool that makes it easy to install on walls over 8’ tall.

Having done this and much more for twenty years the basic are what you rely on talk to professional athletes they may do crazy’s tuff but the fundamentals are what make them great. This will still split wood that is the awareness to know when you can and can’t do this. Bold of you to assume I can split a 2x12 with this technic. Sure do like him but he is hard on equipment. Everything is a hammer!

That's a hurricane tie. It's not holding the rafter up, it's holding it down in case of high winds. The rafter has full bearing on the beam and most likely a seat cut. No reason not to use both. I mean it's possible to use too much hardware but a little overkill isn't a bad thing. Codes are a minimum standard, doesn't mean you can't go above and beyond 😁

I prefer to pre-drill, to at least some depth. Otherwise it will split on some timbers. Better for doing more accurate or variable angles also.

Never had to put it in reverse. Just 1 push pf the trigger, stop, adjust angle of screw and send it. Couldn't imagine putting it in reverse and backing the screw out everytime I put in a screw.

I figured this out while building a storage shed from scratch. After about a couple dozen times of cussing and missing where I needed the screws to go, I screwed it in just a bit and simply bent it to the angle I wanted it go. I haven’t messed up a screw angle in the 4 years since!

When shear strength is a factor, yes. Looks like in this instance he's using the screw to hold the rafter down from pulling/lifting force. I'm that case threads are superior to smooth shank.

IDK about NEVER SPLITS 😅- but yeah my dad showed this to me and it really does work. No slipping or the screw shifting somewhere you didn’t want it to start.

Or buy a "screw guide" for your screw gun. Handy for installing screws straight too to keep them from wobbling around until they bite.

I just put hurricane ties on every rafter. If you do not like the idea, you do what you want but my sheds hold together very well.

I concur with the technique, but not splitting is attributed to a proper fastener, possibly a pilot hole and also the make up of the wood itself.
