We did similar speed training when I was a high school swimmer in 1979-82. We would tie long surgical tubing around our waist and to the starting block. It would start creating resistance about halfway down the pool, and would take about 10 strokes to finish the last 5 yards, but it would give you a big pull coming off the wall that would increase arm/hand speed coming back. We used to only do this the last couple of weeks of the season when we were in our taper. Taper is when swimmers progressively decrease yardage, while increasing speed work. I always cut a lot of time and smashed my PR’s at the end of the taper.
@MartinBorgmeierLD
@MartinBorgmeierLD 2 года назад
I didn‘t know this!! Love it! Cool to see that most principles are very similar in other sports. Some with overload /-speed training
@hoganfan924
@hoganfan924 2 года назад
@@MartinBorgmeierLD It was interesting training, as it required a lot of power to finish the first length of the pool, but then it switched immediately from power to speed, after the turn. Tapering is also used by all types of endurance/speed athletes. I know distance runners taper going into big events. I think they do more downhill running too, to get used to a higher turnover rate.
@JeffTheCSCS
@JeffTheCSCS 2 года назад
Glad to see some old school principles have had lasting effects on athletes! The applied resistance helps as a pre-load, which in turn, allows for a replicated load (like loading a spring). Another way to tweak this would be to add a PAP (post activation potentiation) to the forward swing or concentric motion, this immediately before using the band for back->full swing, SHOULD, increase the concentric by a smidge more.

I replied to Robert Hull’s comment in this thread if you want more detail: PRGR is best between blue Sports Sensors and RypRadar. I bought all 3 and none are perfect, but PRGR is best of the 3 for speed training with speed sticks.

@@sonny2480 the Sports Sensors and PRGR I find to be pretty on top of each other with club head speed readings. Both have some swings where they detect the backswing and give a speed reading for that and not the downswing, but the PRGR has fewer readings like that so more reliable on that metric. that's why I prefer the PRGR at this price point.

@rhull3939 2 года назад
Hey Martin, how accurate do you find the PRGR to be with swing speed? It's great that it measures practice swings. I have it and I was wondering. I know it doesn't take launch angle or spin into account for the ball distance but I was wondering about the swing speed and ball speed.

@@MartinBorgmeierLD it is. I've used it on the course and any time I hit the ball well, it was pretty accurate. It's terrible on mishits from what I can see. I hit one hard and duck hooked it and it told me it went 290 something. More like 180 into the woods on the left. Haha.
@brockwilliams203
@brockwilliams203 2 года назад
I agree with Martin: PRGR is good for swing speed measurement/training. I have the PRGR radar, the RypSticks radar and the Sports Sensors blue/red speed radar as well, and only the PRGR is consistent in getting speed right. Sports Sensors reads the backswing speed too often but speed is generally right when it only reads the forward swing. RypSticks is better than the PRGR at avoiding the backswing but I find the speed reading is accurate - PRGR will read 100 / 101 / 100 on three comparable swings, and Ryp will read 100 / 94 / 99 in a side by side comparison. None of the three are as good as if Trackman could pick up swing speed on a Stack or RipSticks club for training swing speed. But PRGR is the best of the three. Hope that helps!!
@rhull3939
@rhull3939 2 года назад
@@brockwilliams203 yes, thank you. I bought it to start dialing in my club distances in the winter hitting into a net in my garage and I wasn't gonna spend thousands. Basically, if I mishit one really badly, I'll just ignore it because I know the yardage is wrong. I used it on 2 par 3s and for some drives during one round. On a 160yd par 3 I came up right around 10yds short and it said 152 total, another it was dead on. I think it only uses ball speed to calculate the distance, correct?
@brockwilliams203
@brockwilliams203 2 года назад
@@rhull3939 Based on my reading of the manual that comes with the PRGR, it takes the clubhead speed and the club you select and calculates distance from that with a pretty simple algorithm. Not pinpoint but directionally correct, and not specific to the quality of the strike, so off center or face open/closed would not be included in the PRGR distance calculation.
