Do Video Game Tutorials Suck? | Video Essay about Tutorials and Teaching in Games, Hellblade Senua's

Do all video game tutorials suck? Well there's definitely some great ones out there, but there are a ton of boring video game tutorials that could be better. Games like Dark Souls and Hellblade could learn a lot from indie titles that nail the video game tutorial. JRPGs can be quite a lot when it comes to their tutorials as well. Like Kingdom Hearts 2? Oh my word. That tutorial still haunts me to this day... But yeah, I decided to make a video essay about this because I noticed how many games in recent memories just fell short with their tutorial sections.
What are you least favorite video game tutorials of all time?

Lmaoooo now I want a mod for Dark Souls where I can play as Mario. Specifically from Odyssey so I can through my cap at all the things! Also yeah... when I have to pull up a separate window to play the game? Uh uhhh, no no no. I felt that way with Subnautica a lot of the time. 😅

hollow knight never felt like it had a tutorial, youre free to explore, the items you find tell you how they work one-by-one and eventually you slowly find each ability and you mix them together with moves you already know until you master everything.

Worst Tutorial? Dwarf Fortress has a quickstart guide that you have to read on the wiki that includes a flow chart that is more complicated than anything I do at my job, so maybe that. It is the type of game where learning to play the game is part of the experience and the fun of it, though. There's no real pacing to the game to feel like you're being removed from or stuck in the story.
@filmotter
@filmotter 2 года назад
Ooh that kind of sounds interesting to be honest. But I will say nothing annoys me more about a game than when I have to read outside sources to understand something in the game. Like how FFXV has all of it's context and backstory outside of the game itself. Ugh! What is Dwarf Fortress btw. Sounds like it could be a strategy game?

I cannot think of a specific game, but the worst kind of tutorials for me, are the ones that stop the whole story for 30 minutes to an hour just to tell you the most basic stuff, like press R1 to shoot, in the most basic cube room levels with glowing enemies, some stuff are just better communicated trough user interface, also i kinda get? jrpgs like Persona reasons to have long tutorials, since there's too many elements to the gameplay, it can get overwhelming, the key for me is to have the game's story running along side it in an interesting way, not having to wait for the game to start
@mosdarko2252

Also i didn't realise i could parry in hellblade either, till the late stages of the game lol, i was like.. well.. guess i'm dumb at swords
@filmotter
@filmotter 2 года назад
Yeah! Totally agree. When the tutorial keeps interrupting the beginning of the story, I feel like I can't get invested in whats happening. Like my first time playing Persona 5, it was all good because it was just telling me how to play. But now that I know how to play... I have to hold the skip button for HOURS before I can just play the game on my second time around.

@mayaselph4307 2 года назад
Oooooh, ahhhh, wow, very cool Otter! 🦅 It's funny how you've actually touched on a couple of games that I loved that are at various points of the spectrum of good / bad / no tutorial 😅 I really enjoyed FFXV, but when I started it I tried the tutorial and it was a big mistake; the classic JRPG problem of flooding you with mechanics you won't remember, but also there was just so much dead time, waiting for messages to disappear (because they were timed instead of having a dismiss prompt for some reason?) and just waiting between each section. That tutorial was at least optional, but idk, I shouldn't *regret* choosing to view the tutorial 😂 I possibly haven't played enough games with terrible tutorials to have a range to select from, but FFXV is the first one that springs to mind when I think "worst tutorial." Then Hellblade, I think I did figure out the blocking thing pretty early on simply because I often change keybinds so I had a look at the controls and saw it there, but that's not really the way you want your players to find out about a mechanic! And the mirror / focus thing was something I didn't pick up on until *quite* late in the game. I loved the game but yeah it would've been so much more enjoyable if I understood the mechanics earlier on. And Celeste is definitely one I look up to as an example of how to do it right if I ever get around to building my own game haha. I'm not sure how effective Celeste's tutorial is for those who have never played a game before, but for someone who has the basics down it did such a good job of teaching the new mechanics by doing - although having said that the DLC chapter was a bit of a let-down in that respect :( "Bad tutorials don't make games hard, they make them inaccessible" 👏👏👏

Hi! I wanted to bring up Minecraft as an example of a game that doesn't have a comprehensive tutorial. If the game isn't your cup of tea because of the idea that it's usually seen as a "kids game", just stick with me for this I suppose one could say that because of its massive popularity, it probably doesn't need one anyway? And the joy of playing comes from interacting with the community of other players and learning from them, including keeping up with the devs and their updates. At the same time though, there are so many mechanics to the game, and new features are being added about every year. However, I've found a playthrough from nana, a Japanese RU-vidr (better known for his horror content if you're interested in checking that out). He deliberately chose to not look up any guides or tutorials on the game at all. Surprisingly, he's gotten pretty far into the game while keeping his word (save for a few times he was accidentally spoiled by his nieces on some mechanics). It takes him quite a long while to experiment and figure how things work, which is probably only possible because of his amazing patience. It made me realize how unintuitive Minecraft tends to be. Without his level of patience and creativity, it might be impossible for newcomers to play without looking up guides or browsing the Wiki. You can check a playlist of nana's playthrough here if you're interested: ru-vid.com/group/PLbqkLu2V1bJJUQ2aLZjFdz8decGs1kHg-

i wonder, for games that have better tutorials or explanations, what the difference was during development it seems to me that it doesn't matter so much for most people though (most people will play the game anyway) so maybe the time, testing, consulting for a good tutorial isn't worth it to devs even outside of video games there's a definite lack of good "educating" for any how-to/tutorial for any topic though thank you for the video 💖
@filmotter
@filmotter 2 года назад
That's something I'd love to ask some indie devs about if I ever get the chance, actually. Like... some do it so well. And others just... don't. So I'd love to hear what the testing process is like for the games that do it well. Like Hades nailed it. And the tutorial there was so quick that I totally forgot about it within minutes.
@hades_head_empty

i know this isn't necessarily like, correct, it's just a vibe i get. but seeing the time length of under 20 min and the words "video essay" made me realize that i usually consider long form content to be video essays. like, 40 minutes minimum. something to put on while i do menial/repetitive tasks. and under that is short enough that i'll have to get out of my flow to pick the next video. also i love in depth looks at things, and those tend to be longer (not always the case, i know) so i gravitate towards video essays that are closer to documentaries or thesis papers. all that being said, seeing this title made me reevaluate what a video essay really means vs what it means to me. and that time length doesn't rule a video out from being an essay. i know this isn't related to the topic of your video, i just wanted to share to see if others have thought the same. idk

I have to wonder how much being a reviewer/streamer might effect a person's patience with a game; as opposed to someone who only plays one or two games every couple of years and is more prepared to be methodical and experimental in their first playthrough, and is also not being observed by anyone who might razz them for not playing well right off the bat, or be counting on them to play the game in a watchable way.
@Siferiax

I guess for Hellblade it was just me doing my own learning style. The "what does this button do?" 😂 Experimentation goes a long way for the basics. These kinds of videos have made me more aware of tutorials in general. I feel tutorials need to be there when you need them. Which is to say the game should be aware when you're struggling or fail to use a concept over and over and then give a little hint. Hey did you know this was a thing? Like in Hellblade if you keep losing fights and never block, just a little "hey press this button to block" would be helpful.

Metroidvanias are in my opinion prime examples of how to make a tutorial. At most, they'll just tell you the name of the ability and the hotkey for it when you unlock something new, and you get learn through experiences thst are often immediately provided for you. And since these games' whole purpose is unlocking new additions to your moveset or combat skills, you don't need one long tutorial, so it's less boring.

Shout out to all the games I couldn’t figure out how to play as a kid and thus gave up on - I swear a good half of them didn’t even try tutorials bc it wasn’t a thing I guess? Something I really pay attention to lately is how much reading ability is needed for regular gameplay and tutorial, because I hang out with my lil sib who is still learning to read and wants to spend time with me playing games. They can remember things like “that button does that” but if the screen has a popup it’s not an effective teaching method aha. (that’s probably why Mario levels are designed that way, so kids regardless of reading ability can play) I think untitled goose game and botw are some of my favorite tutorials. Here’s basic stuff, go wild and explore. Oh wow, you can use that basic stuff to do color stuff! That was intended but the players discovery of it makes the gameplay feel more fun
@filmotter

Exactly! I love being given tools and just let loose into a world to cause havoc. That's one of my favorite things about games like that. I feel like I just happen upon things, even when the game was made to lead me to those things. So good! Tutorials for first person camera games are one thing, but there are only so many buttons on your controller. However there is a plague of new games which simply refuse to tell you how their stuff works: Oxygen Not Included (vague text boxes, missing essentials), Surviving Mars, Stellaris and Space Engineers: highly complex games which expect you to visit websites and watch youtube tutorials?! And even worse: many are 'finished' games with DLC packs (!)

I’m an ex pro gamer was born 1990 my step father was a gamer so I started super young playing all sorts so all these new games that try and give me a tutorial is probably the hardest part of any game for me and usually ends in an uninstall before I actually get through it, basically I’m a gamer who picks up anything and can jump straight into it, there are websites that bypass this by allowing you to download save files so you can skip that bullshit
