the reason why Walmart oil is cheaper is because they're entire business strategy is to buy in huge bulks so that the price in the store is lower. They also have a much higher volume of customers as well leading to large volume of products sold.

TLDR: Walmart does indeed get unique versions of some products in order to sell it cheaper by using inferior parts.... In defense of the people who have been saying this, this is exactly what Walmart does. They tell the supplier that they will only pay them X and to figure out what they are going to do to get that item to be at a price point that works with that demand or they will refuse to sell anything from that supplier, and in order to not lose all those sales a lot of companies comply.. An example was a Stihl chainsaw I bought from walmart. I brought it back to walmart because it broke 3 times in under 3 months and each time they had me bring it to a local chainsaw repair place. The last time I was there I asked them why it kept breaking and they told me that because Walmart wasn't paying Stihl as much as other retailers they used a plastic piece where a metal piece is used everywhere else. I gave him $20 and asked him to install the metal piece instead. He gave me $15 back and installed the metal piece and I never had to bring that chainsaw back again.

The difference of the bottles is that the one from Walmart is their newer bottle. (Walmart moves product more quickly) The parts store probably doesn’t sell much, oil as most don’t, that one has probably been on the shelf for a while. I was working at a parts store when the change over happened and we started getting the newer bottles none of them hit the shelf for a while because of how slow we moved oil.

I work retail and sometimes we get the same item packed differently based on the packing plant. It costs money to re-tool so they just keep using the packaging their machine is set up to handle. Great video! Thank you.

I started getting my oil from walmart when I had 2 vehicles that burned oil (one was designed to burn oil and the other was a high mileage piece of crap) they both took castrol 20w-50 (rx-7 and a van to which if you put anything lighter it would look like a hurricane of smoke running down the highway) which was almost double the price any where else so I saved a lot. I still do this to this day for multiple of cars. I usually get the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil and have yet to have a engine problem(except for the high mileage piece of crap, I ran it through a "puddle", which ended up being a F-ing LAKE and blew the engine cause of all the water it sucked up and being so old). One last note about the van , I used always buy coolant and walmart was by far cheaper as well BUT it got to the point to where I was just turning on my garden hose and filling up my radiator with water every morning before I drove it, and yes I did replace the head gasket but I'm pretty sure the head was warped already cause I'm sure the engine had over heated plenty of times before. Times were rough and fun with that mini van rest in peace my friend.

I was using only Castrol all my life, 12 year ago switch to walmart supertech synthetic no problems and like my engine. Changed every 4,000 miles.

Walmart is cheaper because they are a discount store that buys in ridiculous bulk shipments. Easy to understand honestly.

What i always thought was walmart was able to sell oil cheaper because of the sheer amount walmart buys. And that auto parts stores get to upcharge for being that niche. Also automotive stores upcharge a shit ton on wiper blades, antifreeze, wax, and especially synthetic oil. Here its 45 dollars for a 5 gallon pennzoil full platnium oil meanwhile the same oil here at walmart is 25$.

I worked in the Walmart automotive department back in the early-mid 2010s, and at that point they had the squareular bottles like Autozone. One problem we had with them was that because that style bottle took up more depth on the shelf, we had to do two facings of each type of Castrol oil to fit a decent amount of them out on the sales floor. With how optimized Walmart tries to make everything and with more oil types and viscosities coming out around that time, I wouldn't be surprised if they pressured Castrol to give them a different bottle that would play nicer with their shelf layout.

I recently bought Kirkland Signature full synthetic oil for my Versa from my local Costco. The online discussion about it being watered down crap was astonishing. What people didn't realize was that the Kirkland stuff came from the same manufacturer, Warren Oil, who distributes the oil to other companies/brands, including Supertech. Car has been running perfect while using the Kirkland stuff and has made me rethink buying only name brand stuff like Mobil 1. Never underestimate the power of marketing.

Good to hear cuz I got the exact same stuff for my older Nissan. I've been told that thicker is better with mileage but I like to add 'Restore' to my oil changes and im pretty sure carbon build-up over its 217k mile life has slightly increased compression anyways, which is why I only run 92 or 93 octane. Just did my 1st timing belt change on it too (VG30), I hope it works out lol

LOL ok the battery thing has always made me wonder regardless of what I knew for fact, because every time i left a battery on the ground for an extended period it was dead, when i started putting it on a shelf for the same reasons, it was never totally dead....even though as a former toyota tech we all knew it was BS, my personal experience made me keep that put it on the shelf superstition going LOL!! but of course there are vairables, battery quality, age, temp, condition etc and there was never a side by side precise example. but like some people wont turn the volume to number 13, its just one of those superstitions backed by bad luck that always stuck with me haha personally, i never have heard any debate about AZ vs WM like this....but we always did joke that walmart could be cheaper because it was bleached and resold as fresh....oddly though, we have a flea market in vegas that would sell detailer bottles with straight up windex in them vs the actual product they just refilled empty bottles they rummaged thru the trash the mexicans would collect, i would suspect they prob sold used motor oil too HAHA

While I have heard that Walmart has deals with some companies to produce a cheaper version. Think electronics, clothes, furniture, etc... But they also get cheaper products by buying company wide in bulk and then shipping it themselves to each store.

I like the smaller spout as the whole bottle can be cut up to become a funnel. The smaller spout fits in most oil fill holes.

the differences in the samples can go back to the batch they were drawn from. I'm sure the manufacturer has a range they shoot for not an exact number. The base stock they use changes from batch to batch.

is it possible that the Autozone is older packaging and or older spec? SN or SN+ and Walmart SP?

Saved me like $40 on my last oil change for my 328i since it eats 7 qts. Still had to hit the zone for a filter since I wanted stp but appreciate the tip Netgear.

I've used Castrol a lot but I don't like those low anti-wear additive numbers. One thing I'd like to say is that people are scared of chlorinated paraffins which are just about the best antiwear substance known to man but it forms hydrochloric acid if you leave it in your engine for years or never get the engine to operating temperature...Change your oil, Motorkote good!

went to walmart for mobil 1 esp 0w30, they only had three quarts for like 7.50/qt. went to autozone to get a 5 qt jug and a single qt for my alfa giulia. the single qt of oil was like 10 bucks. felt like an idiot at the register for not just buying the three at walmart, and felt netgear’s look of disdain as i paid like 70 bucks for my oil. never again mr. netgear!!

Some people don't realize that these companies have different packaging options for the business needs. Such as display or easier stocking. That's why they're in different bottles.

I like the classic square bottle and im assuming most cars do too and thats why they seel them at autozone.

The bottle shape and the foil seal are probably at the request of the retailer. Walmart likely wants the seal because a crushed pallet of oil in Walmart's logistics chain has a lot more stuff to ruin than in Autozone's chain.

I did buy some bad brake parts cleaner from Autozone one time. It didn't come with a straw and it was watered down really bad. I should have took it back but I was afraid they would piss me off.

The Castrol HM oils were from different batches... so a tiny difference, but the same formula. I THINK the WM bottle's seal is for tamper/return issues...

HERE’S THE DIFFERENCE: At Walmart, you have to walk to the back right part of the store (wherever the F the oil is, usually far af), sift through the completely gutted selection of oil scattered across the shelves, pray your oil is still available, wait it line at the self checkout for 5 years, and walk 300 yards to the car in the parking lot. At auto zone, you walk to the oil section, your oil is definitely there, walk 20 feet to the counter, and another 20 feet to your car. I’m eating that $2 difference every time to avoid a Walmart in Atlanta.

I work at an AutoZone and i'm sure the bottle is different for marketing purposes only. The shape of the Wal-Mart bottle and the lower price are just their attempt at getting our customers. Side note, I'm pretty sure GTX is the only bottle with the obscure shape at my store. Castrol has a couple other sub brands which have the same bottle as the Wal-Mart GTX.

Ive been told the same thing about car tires, that Walmart gets special car tires you can't get from a tire shop.

Use edge gtx in my 2j car and never id issues with the walmart stuff and do blackstone yearly.

I suspect they are same with batch variance and maybe shelf age difference.

With the skus being the same, im betting they are the same product, unless one is really old. Castrol probably subs out blending and bottling but I still think that the blend should be the same with the skus matching. I know that Walmart sold tires with the same brand name and model name as OE tires that were absolutely different. They had different part numbers, different tread pattern, ratings etc. Some tire shops had the OE version.

Castrol is very stringent about quality and purity of their products and guidelines must be followed by distributors of the branded products or they will not be allowed to sell them. They also use Castrol in the automotive centers and samples are taken upon delivery. I’ll take a leap and say all the major brands do as well.

Never ever considered that a BRANDED oil (in this case - Castrol) would ever be different. Unbranded (such as SuperTech) yes. But how could Castrol get away with selling the SAME container, with DIFFERENT oil in them, at different stores? But thank you for doing this test.

You should have shaken each bottle to mix up any additives that may have fell out of suspension.

The bottle are different due to what’s stocked in each store. Autozone has the smaller bottle because it sells way more different types of oil than Walmart ever will. Walmart wants to fill a shelf up more to make it seem like it has a bigger automotive area thus getting the bigger bottle.

Before the 1970s, batteries on concrete would discharge faster because rubber cases were slightly porous. Holding moisture allowed tiny micro current to discharge to the moisture in the concrete. Plastic cases ended that problem. Myths always exist about "differences" such as GMC trucks are better built than Chevy, I had a 1979 GMC Sierra, that had a Chevy name on the left fender and a GMC on the right. They were built on the same assembly lines and only the RPO spec sheet determined "named" items like badging.
