Do we all have to change to LMDE? - Linux Mint vs LMDE - (Ubuntu Snap) 

When LMDE6 came out I started migrating my computers to it. I love it. All the Debian goodness with the Minty frosting on top. I only have one computer still on the Ubuntu version.

Thanks so much for your video. I am an Ubuntu / Linux only user since about since about 2011, but started using Ubuntu in 2005. Now I hate Ubuntu because of snap. Ubuntu is trash. I started using LMDE 6 about 5 months ago. Your video is one of the best descriptions I've seen on what the future of LMDE is. I don't like flatpack either. I hope they will add the Driver Manager to LMDE soon. I'm sure I can add the drivers, but it will be a pain and take too much time. I surely hope that Debian will always continue to support the apt system.

A nice video with good and honest comparison. Linux Mint was my first distro, specially the whole Cinammon experience was beautiful, but after i learned/grew i t experimented with multiple OS. I am using LMDE 6 now, but agree that new Linux users should try /start with regular Linux (Ubuntu base) mostly because of the big base, simplicity and support , LMDE is really rock-solid, and you can get most of the everyday apps with flathub...

I went from Ubuntu to Mint when they started all this snap crap. And as soon as Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 came out I installed that and it's terrific. I'd rather have a 100% community distro than that corporate based stuff.

For a new user, I agree, Mint will be slightly easier, especially with proprietary drivers. Having said that, when I installed Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 it automatically installed the correct WiFi driver with no need for me to do anything. It's a Broadcom driver which is a pain to find the right one manually but Linux Mint Debian Edition found and installed the correct driver all by itself.

5:55 - WDYM? Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS which receives point release updates just like Debian, and they both are mostly bug and security fixes, not major feature updates.

LMDE has more updated packages than Ubuntu mint (system packages)

Good video. I’m running LMDE now and absolutely love it. Actually wanted to try Mint but I couldn’t get it to install as a VM in Proxmox.

Imho LMDE its a right way for Mint.

I currently dual boot with 21.1 Mint. This whole battle deal with Ubuntu / LMDE has me concerned. Since w/10 eol is 2025 my plan was to learn on Mint & migrate. But now with this & wayland I'm not sure what the heck to do by then. Maybe even dual boot with 11 until they can get their $*** together.

I had been running Mint's Ubuntu based Cinnamon version(s) since 2011. With 21.2 Cinnamon, my Soundblaster Audigy FX 5.1 card would only do stereo and not 5.1 surround. I ran the Live LMDE 6 and I had surround 5.1 and I love it, So that's what I run now. I changed my other desktop machine to Debian 12 Bookworm Cinnamon, and it runs great as well.

It's nice seeing Linux Mint going directly to Debian, when is what Ubuntu is based off of in the first place. It's better to cut out the middle man. I'm using plain stock Debian 12. It's actually not that difficult to install and set up. Just a few extra steps like manually adding users to the sudo list in the terminal, modifying the repository list to install the proprietary nvidia drivers. That really is the most difficult part of it. After that the rest of the experience is a breeze.

I bought a custom built computer from a trusted friend that installed Ubuntu for driver availabiltes. I've been using mint for years, and I'm going to be switching to LMDE on all my computers because of canonical's agreesive policies. Despite setting updates for two weeks, I'm getting nag screens at least once per day, and often 3! Imve lost work despite frequent saves and backups, in window$ like forced reboots while I was away from my desktop. I'm highly aware of the need for vigilance for security, but I have final saye say! The corporocratic war on ownership and right to repair must be stopped!

I am a newcomer to Linux from W10 and I went straight to LMDE when I did my first installation on bare metal, but after tinkering with several VM's on Ubuntu's Mint. I have been lost at different points, and ready to quit, but I have been able to do the transition...

Good comparison

Well, it's been nice having some of Ubuntu's bells and whistles and compatibility with Ubuntu packages, but moving upstream does seem like the better move for Mint to take control of their destiny.

Mint WILL definitely have to abandon Ubuntu for sure because canonical want to go all-snaps. Next year they will release an all-snap distro together with the regular iso so they can have thousands of beta testers and when it's 100% ok, they will switch to only all-snaps.

I have LM 21.2 running on my main desktop, and LMDE6 running on both my secondary desktop and laptop. I'm not surprised LM wants to move away from Ubuntu. I dual-booted Windows and Ubuntu from 2004-2015, but gave up using Ubuntu given the direction they were going and the lousy changes they implemented. After trying out nearly two dozen Linux distros I started using LM full time in 2015. I'll never go back to Windows or Ubuntu. Eventually I'll have LMDE running on all three of my systems.

I've been on LMDE since LMDE4, and there's no way t return Ubuntu-based sitros or other distros (MaBox is my Arch-based distro if I had to).

I did use both, I noticed no difference. Yesterday I tried MX but this was not what I thought. My final desicion is LMDE!!

When I found LMDE 4 I stopped looking. It is at 6 now.

Now try to install old NVidia drivers on on a laptop with 2 GPUs :/ strugling with this issue for few months now.

LMDE is a nice gateway distro to Debian. Installed LMDE on an old NUC (i3 8GB) and it inspired me to want to install Debian + Gnome. If you love Cinnamon - fine, but I prefer Gnome. Ultimately, any Linux distro is simply a means to running applications and in that respect I still feel more productive on macOS (OSX). I love the open-source ethos but do wish that the Linux community focused more on efficacity and productivity than multiple Desktop configurability. For e.g. Preview. It's the built-in image viewer. Hit the spacebar and the image pops open which we can easily resize with the option to edit. In Linux, I have to download an image editor and none of them are even as good as this basic built-in one in Preview.

No; Debian and anything derived from are meant to be SERVER based distributions. The focus of Ubuntu has always been server, the focus of Debian has always been server. Linux mint is ultimately very pointless, how can you try to rip away from Ubuntu and then use Ubuntu repos? It's not a smart move at all. There's a reason that Debian regurgitates the ESR version of FireFox by default. Fedora, OpenSUSE, and Arch Linux/Arch Variants are the go to's for systems that are meant for users, with Arch being more tailored for aggressive and experienced Linux users who can fix their own problems. It's literally in their wiki by the way, they don't want to hear about your problems, they want you to post your solutions to them instead. As an added bonus Fedora, and OpenSUSE both bring Gnome 45, which is sleek and new.
