Bro I’ve been trying to put electricians on to these Ideal 45-113’s for a cool minute. I bought mine from Bee’s lighting right when they first came out. Ideal makes good stuff, people sleep on it. Great video.

For an all around Wire Cutter, Striper and Crimp Tool, nothing bets the discontinued Vaco 1963 Tool, for Insulated Terminals. I think the Vaco Tool for Un-insulated terminals is the Vaco 1916. BTW, If you are building UL Cabinets, you need a tool that strips wire, and will never nick the wires. Also a Heavy Duty, Ratchet type Crimper. Also you have to put the Terminal in the Crimper in the correct position.

I got a pair from the supply house and the teeth between the different wire sizes were tweaked after the first day causing closing issues. Thought maybe I had a bad pair so they exchanged them and the same thing happened. I’ll stick with my Knipex strippers.

Great point and great video. I just purchased these from amazon. They’re $40 shipped free, as an illusion that it’s free shipping. I couldn’t find a better grand total, so $40 is it at this point.

I have both of these pliers (knipex and ideal). Both are great pliers and they work great for what they are and money spent. It means less tools in the tool kit or pouch.

I’ve been on the fence about the Knipex forge strippers but not going to 10 stranded has been the thing that has steered me away as of now, I end up just using my lineman’s

I used the knipex for a long time. They are great but I switched to the southwire s5n1 for $25 it’s hard to beat. Less features but feels really good and opens wide.

Hmmmmm…… ideal was handing these out at my trade school when they visited last year. Haven’t really been using them as I really enjoy my Milwaukee needle nose strippers. usually you end up getting what you pay for (which in this case I payed nothing), but after watching your video they seem a little more appealing than they did before. I guess I need to try these out for a couple weeks in my commercial lab to see which I prefer before getting back into the field this summer. Thanks for probing my interest with your video!

As someone that pre twists, I was very disappointed with knipex. I was hoping this would be a replacement for my linemen’s in my pouches when making up floors worth of joints. Unfortunately, it’s just 2-3 mm too narrow. They are only good for 2 maybe 3 wire joints. The biggest selling point for the knipex is the threadless cutting on the bolts. Idk why more companies don’t include stranded 10 on their cutters either.

Best replacement for me is the Milwaukee’s 7n1 lineman stripper strips up to 8 and shear style cutting and effortless screw cutting

Ballistol is great, a bit expensive but worth it especially if you use a sure shot refillable aerosol sprayer with a bulk size of Ballistol that really offsets the cost, hickok45 is always recommending Ballistol & he turned me onto it 4 or 5 years ago and now on any ppe that goes pew that’s all I use
@americanelectrician
@americanelectrician 8 месяцев назад
Wait wait. You use it to take away the bad smells from your PPE?
@Jeff-rk8hq
@Jeff-rk8hq 7 месяцев назад
@@americanelectrician lmao no I must have been editing the message because that’s what it looks like I said, ballistol has a weird smell itself imo lol if you use andthing like that made of rubber use silicone lubricant it’s better for them and doesn’t dry them out (it. Also keep your car doors and locks from freezing. If you spray it on the lock and on the weather, strip seal before a heavy snow, works well ) but I just meant that’s all I use on guns because it actually does a pretty good job cleaning, lubricating and protecting so it kind of works like a clp imo but the ballistol is all I use for cleaning etc aside from that all I use is some grease similar to the golden copper grease that the Glock factory lubricates their slides etc with but it’s just essentially a copper antiseize

So i didn't buy the knipex due to the lack of 10 stranded. I just got them a few days ago, and 12 and 14 stranded just does not strip at all. On thhn It'll be perfect on one side, and the other side won't even have any cut/mark on them. So, quite literally, i am having to rip half the insulation + nylon coating off. I feel like my pair is defective, but this has been my experience with other forged strippers. I have to use all my might to strip 12 with these and the milwaukees. Idk what's going on but my ideal reflex are staying for now.

I prefer a wide tip on my forged strippers, because I carry them instead of a linesman's pliers. Really. I don't need to pre-twist wires because I don't use wire nuts any more (Wagos for the win!) but I'm in industrial so I use 99% stranded wire, and I often need to 'comb' the end of an existing wire for a re-connect after replacing a contactor or whatever, and I used to use my linesman's pliers for that, but now that I carry the 7" Milwaukee forged strippers I have my 'silver bullet'. If there is something better out there then I will switch, but for my needs I carry the 7" Milwaukee forged strippers and a pair of actual needle-nose pliers (not just long-nose) for control work where I need to get a wire back into a terminal strip where my sausage fingers won't fit. So, for me, a 'regular long nose' plier isn't small enough to be as useful a needle-nose, and a regular long-nose isn't as useful as a wide nose. Instead of being a goldilocks situation it's not as useful for either. Everybody needs different tools for their own work, and I'm always watching videos like this to see if there is something that I might like better. I desperately need at least #18 to #10 stranded stripper, and Milwaukee actually does #20 to #10. Good stuff. The Milwaukee's aren't perfect, so I'm still looking for something better, but so far they are the best that I have found for me with my work.

I had the romex stripper version and gave it away after one day! I know everyone has different needs but the quality wasn't there for me. I do wonder what the country of origin is on thoes ideals because if it's Taiwan they look eerily similar to milwaukee even if ideals came out before them. They could be the same oem from Taiwan. It's funny I want alot ofcwhat you don't want I use knipex instalation pliers since I do mostly residential. I do want spring loaded but the only model of instalation pliers with is European version in chrome and tends to knick wires. Just sharing my experiences and I'll put my hands on them in my local platt but I have a hard time thinking a generic Taiwan oem would beat a German masterpiece (unless it's a BMW lol)
@americanelectrician
@americanelectrician 8 месяцев назад
So the installation pliers are great but they don’t have the right sizes for commercial guys. 12 stranded is a necessity. I had the Romex version as well and I didn’t love them the way I do this style of plier
@bogdan_d82
@bogdan_d82 8 месяцев назад
I have the Knipex VDE european version, no spring, with the long and thin nose, i like them, but they don't twist wire good and at times i find them too long for the job and if the cable is braided and a bit old they don't strip good.
@americanelectrician

Hi Guys!!! Do the curved style of blades on these types of pliers hold up well? When I looked at Klein, their similar style had a more traditional blade setup that I would think lasts longer. Klien Model #J2078CR and Model #J2158CRSEN are the ones I'm looking at.
@bogdan_d82

That said the knipex I think is still a way better stripper for me and my job, the feel the way it cuts is just a hard one for anyone to beat. It's nice to have another style stripper in my arsenal cuz other than my full time job I own rentals and I'm constantly doing lighting repairs/outlets etc and this will be used for all those projects along with my knipex!
