Do we forget to have FUN? PM Model Sea Fury FB11 in 1/72 scale - Build & Review (Kinda)

I bought a PM Model Hawker Sea Fury FB11 model kit which I was going to build as a personal project, simply to have fun and not put any undue stress on myself to complete it. Using only very simple techniques and a limited selection of paints I built this kit over a few days for my own enjoyment.
I didn't plan on making a video (or even a review of this build) because I did this for me . . but then I realised that maybe it would be helpful to others if I shared my thoughts on this topic. After all - why do we put so much stress on ourselves to build kits to the point that they are "perfect", but sacrifice our own enjoyment in the process.
Perhaps doing an easier, or "bad" build from time to time is good for our mental health? What do you think?
I also compare this model to an older PM Model Hawker Sea Fury Trainer that I built in my youth - keep an eye out for that near the end!

Matt, be careful mate, people might imagine the whole hobby is for fun and that would never do.... well done on a great build and for reminding all of us what this is about. It's important to remember modelling like any hobby is for enjoyment therefore l avoid over engineered and over complicated kits and photo esch whenever possible simply because l find them overly fiddley and stressful and a hobby should be about fun . Probably stems from starting modelling when l was a kid in the '60's when l built Airfix ,Revell, Frog, Matchbox and Monogram Models , straightforward to build models , basic but good and this has stayed with me. Good video , nicely built and painted model and most importantly enjoyable , rewarding and fun which is what it,s all about . Cheers .

Absolutely love the sentiment. It's all too easy to forget that this is a hobby first and foremost and a hobby should be something we enjoy without condition. An old, slightly rubbish kit can be just as enjoyable as the newest, most accurate and detailed kit. It was interesting to see someone with a completely different approach to a build than the one I have. It's nice to be reminded that there are so many ways of tackling a kit that will give an equally satisfying result.

They are great little kits to do, Ive done two. I did like the decals so made my own. One was a PM kit which I did in Royal Navy version WJ236 and a FROG kit which I did in a Dutch version 6 - 19. Ive got an old FROG version which I think Ill do in an Australian colour scheme, like yours, and the trainer version. I quite like them. They are simple and pretty robust kits, and like you say, fun to build. Maybe I went a bit far making my own decals, but on these occasions they were a good learning curve.

Definitely worth it going back to basics once in a while. I had an old Airfix P40 kit which I'd put aside thinking I'd never build it due to its age and quality. I decided to get it out the way at the end of last year. Build it up, painted and decaled it in a day. Didn't bother with any extra stuff such as filling and sanding. Still came out quite well despite this. Still cam eout better than the kits I was building when I first started.

nice build! PM's scheme instructions are a little inaccurate. The dark blue scheme indicated in the kit was used for display purposes on a couple of aircraft from the ground base NAS Nowra (HMAS Albatross) Hence the "NW" on the tail. Most were operated in Extra Dark Sea Grey upper surfaces with Sky fuselage sides and lower surfaces. Tail markings were "K" for HMAS Sydney, "Q" for HMAS Vengeance and "NW" for NAS Nowra (HMAS Albatross)

I believe (but cant know for sure) that tooling is derived from or updated from the 1960's & 70's Frog / Novo model. Wings are put together very differently (better), panel lines are recessed, but I swear the cab interior and the crude missiles are identical to the Novo one I am building (I put my rear bulkhead on top of that "bar" on the cab floor as thats how I interpreted the Novo instructions). May be wrong but it doesnt hurt to speculate aimlessly... That's a nice, quick build by the way! Australian scheme looks great on them.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the thoughts! I do actually have a Frog Sea Fury in the stash that I got second hand, and whilst there are similarities, I think the PM Model version might have been "inspired" by the Frog version, but it doesn't seem to be a direct copy. Panel lines on frog are raised, on PM they are recessed Pilot is included in Frog, absent in PM Frog has option of folded wings, PM does not Drop tanks come in 2 parts on both, but on Frog they have a top and bottom, whilst PM have two sides that are joined Frog lower wings come in 4 parts, PM is a single part Tail surfaces on PM are single parts, and split on Frog A seperate part for the Rudder is included in the Frog, whilst it is part of the fuselage moulding on PM So yeah, whilst I think the PM kit has been inspired by the Frog kit (particularly with the engine construction, rocket design and landing gear) I think that the Frog version is distinctively different enough for it to not be a direct copy or upgrade

I cannot tell a lie, I adore the PM Sea Furies. Sure, they're basic but with a little work they build into decent models. For a long time they were also the only game in town for a 1/72 Sea Fury and had some great decal options (delighted to see the Cuban markings in the box, I had to use AM decals for my Bay Of Pigs Fury). Also glad to see that they appear to be freely available again: the rumours on the modelling forums back in the early 2000s were that the moulds had been destroyed as part of a family dispute following the death of the company founder. Will be picking a few up really soon and having myself a great old time.
