Do we need nuclear power to solve climate change? Amory Lovins says no

In 2017, the V.C. Summer Nuclear Plant expansion - meant to hail the renaissance of nuclear power in the US - came screeching to a halt. The project, to build two new reactors at an existing South Carolina facility, was canceled after being delayed more than a year, costing $9 billion USD, and still being only 40% complete. Now, the only new nuclear project in the works in the U.S. is the Vogtle Plant expansion in Georgia; a project also more than a year behind schedule, and billions of dollars over budget. Still, nuclear projects remain a focus of government and think tank decarbonization strategies. Why?
Dr. Amory Lovins, adjunct professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, and international authority on the clean energy transition, joins Climate Now to explain why he thinks nuclear should no longer be considered as a source of energy. For Amory, it's not just the chance of environmental catastrophe or nuclear proliferation that make it a non-starter, it's the economics.

I think there's a strong association between nuclear power and nuclear armament. For both you refine radioactive materials and research nuclear technology. Ever notice how warhawks are insanely pro-nuclear?

Excellent interview. BTW, 16:54 it doesn't "beg" the question (which is a logical fallacy), but _raises_ the question. Also, 17:57 _route_ is pronounced identically to "root"; a _rout_ (as you're pronouncing it) means something entirely different.

Maybe Lovins is just a little bit anti-nuclear...

That's because he's a genius not a nuclear fanboy drunk on the pro-nuclear kool-aid.

So, he is dreaming about a future grid? It is clear we need battery storage in most places. There is not enough and it wears out. Demand is still growing rapidly.

Anti nuclear sentiment is still very comon unfortunately. He sounds plausable which makes him a danger to our fight against climate change and ecosystem colapse. I wont even talk about the technical details if you are technical at all and open minded its fairly easy to do the research ( all be it time consuming) to see that he is wrong. The bigger problem here is that if enough people are influenced by people like this then we wont do we have to do.

What danger exists in a data based, rational assessment of nuclear power in terms of cost and carbon abatement?
