Do we really need In-Line Mic Preamps?

I just got the UA SD-1 and yeah, it's hungry for that gain. Funny enough, I got it after watching Kyle Bull run a bunch of dynamic mikes up to a guitar cabinet. I figure if a vocal mic sounds that good on a guitar cab, then I can alot more use out of it.
