The oscillating nature of film careers in #bollywood has often been discussed but the 'shelf life' of female actors has often deterred them from having any form of longevity. The likes of #preityzinta #ayeshatakia #amritarao #ileanadcruz #laradutta #rimisen all beautiful and capable actors but why is it that their work is few and far between? I hope you like Top 10 Bollywood Actresses Who Quit Their Careers and Some Who Are Still Struggling!

I remember in Koffee with Karan Sara Ali Khan and Janvi were saying after 30 it's difficult to achieve success and Karan was giving them Deepika's example.. Imagine if nepo kids are insecure about getting chances how much it would be difficult for Mrunal, Sanya Malhotra who don't have much support.. Everyone can't be Deepika,or Priyanka..

I do not know if its a personal choice of hers or if Indian producers have abandoned her. I feel there is still more i want to see from her. Now with the advent of OTT I think female actors have a plethora of options to choose from. It's about adaptability as well. Once you are no longer considered "leading lady material", you can get into other aspects such as production etc. Anushka Sharma and Priyanka Chopra are great examples of sustenance. It is the unfortunate truth that a 70 year old male actor can still be a leading man and a 35 year old female actor can't.

Preity Zinta's case is very different from all others you mentioned in here. She was already a huge superstar like Alia and Deepika when she started leaving films during 2007-08 for IPL and was still getting good films (like Jab We Met) but rejected them all. So increasing in her age, stereotypical roles, or flop films had nothing to do with her just like in the case of other disappearing actresses. That's why it hurts very much when it comes to her.

It depends on priorities at the end and the opportunity you get. Tabu and Kajol from 90s batch have held their position because of their transition. Madhuri and Raveena both keep themselves in limelight but not by doing movies so cant really count them. Same goes with few other 90s/2000s actresses. Kareena from 2000s have transitioned from commercial heroine to more of character roles. But luckily she still gets commerical films in between. Vidya and Rani have slowly transitioned to more of the middle of road movies and not entirely leading lady type roles. Kangana had the opportunity to continue but have got distracted not. Deepika and Alia have maintained their streak so far. But there is chance of breaking it in few years from now. Absolutely agree with Jammy on Preity, Lara, Rimi and Amrita.

It is plainly a knee-jerk impact of how our society is. Beyond a certain age the women are expected to let go of their aspirations, dreams and wants. Like till today, remarrying is a thing that gets you a side-eye. If it were'nt, more movies could be made depicting women giving life another shot at a much later age that'd open the gates for female actors who've supposedly reached the saturation point of their career. Ending on the note that things would change gradually towards favourable✌️.

I mean there's biological reasons. Pregnancy, and giving birth, and breastfeeding, and children needing their mother more than their father for the first couple of years make it much more difficult to balance all that PLUS raising and taking care of the kids part which both parents share. In fact, it's practically impossible to work for at least months around a baby is born, and just objectively more difficult to balance after that time. But I do agree that it's a sort of devaluation of fatherhood to never even think of asking that question to a man, as of they weren't needed or didn't want to play their role in the child's life at all.

IMO, this phenomenon is present in every other film industry. For instance during 90's in Kannada Film industry there was heroine named 'Malashree' who used to action roles and got equal recognition and remuneration as a hero. But that feat has not repeated till now. Same goes with Anushka Shetty in Telugu industry. Such exceptions can be seen in every other Film industries but no repetions. May be, It also has to do with the audience taste. Even now, the deep mass pockets in India dont get along with a Female-lead movies as much as a male-lead.

I don't think they're thrown out to the side but if the opportunities dry up. You gotta move on to the next best thing. I also think some take a break because they can afford it since they've been working since they were kids. This is so unlike seen in today's generation of actors since so many of them start their careers super late. I don't think it's super late at 23 - 25 for some like Sara Ali Khan but it is compared to the older stars who were mostly child actors.

Some just fell out of love with acting. So maybe even the level of passion required is one of the reasons many just gave up . But with the wave of OTT maybe many who din have the choices back then will have. But it will also boil down to choices they make. N also the impact they create with acting even with small screen time. U can also add kajol n rani to the list , since they too stopped making movies at the same pace that they used to. I miss kajol the most since she s such a great actress. Atleast now she s beginning to make more OTT movies. So hopefully we ll get to see more of her n all the yesteryear actresses. N yes the movie makers n writers need to make more well written fleshed out female characters as well. That cud also be one of the reasons why they actresses r not inspired enuf. While tabu and Vidya from early on opted to make different movies n different kinda roles so that they themselves don’t get saturated by the same roles n get burnt out. So yea. Tats tat

What we people don’t realise is that actors have screen age which is determined by how they look. Whether we like it or not but females have less shelf life compared to male counterparts because primarily majority of females are casted to sell glamour and look beautiful and sexy. They also don’t have much of a role in the story as well so they fade away very quickly. To counter that you have to be like Tabu who never really was in the movies because she was just beautiful, sexy and glamorous. She was and still an outstanding actress first. That’s why if female actors want to prolong their shelf life then focus on your craft first and then the looks. Otherwise you will be in a movie just for sex appeal like Amrita Rao, Manisha Lamba and Katrina Kaif etc.

Minisha Lamba is a very intelligent lady. I was blown away when I found one of her interviews some years back and she talked about how much of her life she had already pre planned including being aware of this shelf life thing in the industry. It was just mind blowing level of intelligence.

Most of the examples discussed on this video are Outsiders, i think it has to do.with bring an outsider and not having enough connections. Apart from shelf-lige approaching, there were actresses like Kajol, Kareena, etc whose Shelf-lives got little more extended due to Kjo and other biggies' monopoly. And other actresses were left to do the small budget routine movies, which were not as much accepted those days as much they get accepted now. Now tines have changed which is why we get to see more of Yami, Sania Malhotra, Nussrat Barucha, Kriti Sanon, but could not see kore of Aiysha takia, Amrita Arora , etc.

I would say even genelia should be a part of this conversation. At one point in time she was at the top of her game in the telegu industry and even the hindi industry but she chose to focus more onher family and casters just assmed she is quitting after marriage. Personally, she isn't even that old yet and I don't understand why she is not being casted anymore. Her role in ved was amazing. As much as I dislike the story (both ved and the og majili) I can see the female lead part being demanding in terms of acting and both samantha and genelia killed it

But men are still casted as heroes and actresses after a certain age they will be considered old and get roled as moms or aunts . Its happening in every film industry . I find terrible when old uncles as heroes get 20 to25 yrs old females as heroines 😅 Its very hard to watch...

I feel height factor was also one of the reasons in Indian film industry unlike Hollywood here there is always such perception like actress should not be taller than their male leads if u see apart from Aamir and Anushka u don't see tall actresses paired opposite to shoter actors that is also one reason especially with earlier actresses like Sonali Bindre and Lara Dutta for not getting roles especially they r 90's actresses they faced this more than the current actresses like Katrina opp to Aamir we love them right then why is this alws a problem, in Hollywood Tom cruise is paired opposite to Nicole Kidman we love their pair on and off-screen. And the short actresses are also not given more opportunities like Rani Mukherjee only works under Yash Raj banner and Preity Zinta and Minisha are also considered short IDK y is this a problem again coz if u see Priety Zinta has alwz given best films and been part of best stories that has set Bollywood to an other example of beautiful stories and choice of films. Chori chori chupke chupke, kya kehna, koi mil Gaya, veer-zara, lakshya, kal ho na ho. Especially Her role in kabhi Alvida na kehna, my most fav Dil chahta hai. She as an actress alws tried to give good films or good roles. Then y shd height be a drawback. Now Alia is doing good, with coming times we see slight transition.

The question equally relevant to this discussion is that “WHY are 50+ year old actors playing 30 year olds like Jawan or Dunki?” Because these actors are playing younger characters the actresses paired opposite them are also 25 or 30. Besides, the Indian audience is very sexist where younger women are preferred in the movies. You don’t see this in Hollywood. Tom Cruise played a role appropriate to his age in both Top Gun movies (with Jennifer Connelly paired opposite him who is also 50+) and played an experienced aging instructor. In the latest Pirates of the Caribbean the astronomer Carina was paired opposite Henry Turner and not Jack Sparrow. Tom Hanks, George Clooney and other A-list actors play roles appropriate to their ages (parents mainly). If SRK were to play more roles like he did in Dear Zindagi or something then he’d be forced to be paired opposite someone like Kajol or Tabu

I mean, Hollywood does have a bit of a problem with the age thing still in that actors might play younger characters, although not nearly to the same degree, but they definitely don't have such a huge discrepancy between the male and the female leads as a rule (and if there is an age difference it's addressed by the narrative).
@sumanthmurthy1642
@sumanthmurthy1642 2 месяца назад
@@Cationna I don’t recall star actors (50+) playing college students or 25 year olds in any recent movies. For Spider-Man back in 2016, they chose Tom Holland who was just 19, correct casting which they corrected from the previous movies. Admittedly DiCaprio played a much younger character (20s) than his actual age of 50 in the recent Scorsese movie

I seriously respect the choices of women who opt to take a break to focus on being a mother ..but sometimes I also wonder why so many women think like this, what soft-coded them to think that it is okay to take a break after becoming a mother, why is it so normalized? While men usually don't take a break after becoming fathers..it rarely occurs in their brains to take a break ..while of course exceptions are everywhere..but I am questioning the normalized and well accepted standards

There's one thing that came to my mind when you mentioned "unsaid but understood in this patriarchal society we live in". Because I feel in many cases what women say in front of the camera might not be the whole truth. Again I am not saying that there's patriarchal reason with everyone, but it wouldn't be unfair to take this into consideration that many women would take a step back in their career as it was mostly the norm, especially in the entertainment industry. I mean in 2020s we are seeing so much patriarchal influence, think about the society in 2010s. I believe patriarchal behavior are instilled in us just because it the world we have seen growing up and even with conscious effort and discussion, the change is slow.
