Do you Have a really stubborn Nozzle Clog on your Non Stationary Cart Type Printers?

Your printer has this clog that simply will not react to head cleans or the "tried and true" soaking the print head over folder paper toweling wetted with head cleaner or WINDEX with ammonia.
So what to do?
The last resort is direct injection of Cleaner into the Print Head Ink Inlet Stems.
The catch is if you are not careful you will do more harm than good.
In fact you could ruin the print head if you are too forceful.
However if you are careful, you will likely end up with a fully cleared print head an another print saved from land fill or recyclers.

This may be an old video but it worked!!!! Thank you, thank you, Jose! I followed your instructions exactly and after leaving Windex inside the Epson nozzle overnight, I did head cleaning in the morning once and it suddenly started printing great AND it also solved the problem with skipping a line every inch or so. Yippeee! I appreciate it so much!

Here's what worked for me: I am no printer expert. I am an artist. I have little 30 ml plastic needle tip bottles for filling with paint and making thin lines. I took an empty one and, with a scissors, trimmed the plastic needle tip a little at a time until it was a snug fit. I put a clean folded piece of paper towel down over the sponge tray. I squeezed some Windex with ammonia through the nozzle until I saw it come out on the paper towel. First nozzle check was perfect. It was only my magenta that was clogged. YEA!

Came back and logged in, strictly to thank you for this video! My old Epson WF-2540 quit printing, while doing our shipping labels yesterday. Had a few OEM's laying around to finish up those labels... and that's when the fight started! 3 or 4 carts were so clogged, thought I busted the printhead in the early stages of the repair attempt(S). Fast forward to today, and we're back in the race. Thanks Jose!!!

@magnoliascreens7469
@magnoliascreens7469 6 лет назад
Actually, it isn't. The Cyan and Yellow both will print hit or miss after the cleaning; and after a few pages of test prints, stops printing all together. Now, not convinced head damage wasn't done. Given the old gal one final cleaning and have emptied the carts back into the CISS tank... Will refill them and test again. May be making an unplanned trip to Best Buy tomorrow. I did notice drips coming out of the print head, after soaking only the business end in distilled white vinegar and water, while looking to see if there was a spray pattern or dribbles. *shrugs* The thought crossed my mind to use naphtha on these two buggers, but haven't. Thanks for the reply Jose! Have a nice night.

Why are you using vinegar??? Acids will dissolve electronic connections and corrode the nozzle plate! You can use Windex but never vinegar or other acids! I hope you did not damage the electronics!
@magnoliascreens7469
@magnoliascreens7469 6 лет назад
In my reading before tackling this, Windex was widely suggested. Vinegar, just as I used it, also made the mention. If it was wrong advice and I've cursed the print head, so be it. I'll take that L with pride and carry on. It was also suggested to use 50/50 alcohol/water, mixed with a drop of "OIL" - I asked for verification of hearing her correctly and she affirmed. Did not take that advice but, at one point before talking to her, I'd considered using pure Naphtha. That 'may' leave a film but if the unit was flushed with air afterwards and left to air dry for 12-24 hours, I "think" it'd be OK. Cont...
@magnoliascreens7469
@magnoliascreens7469 6 лет назад
Didn't do Naphtha. Used 90% alcohol 50/50. The 2 problem nozzles are back, but barely. This may take a while before I trash the printer and upgrade. Black is working fine with monochrome set on my desktop... so, it's serving the basic function for now. One guy, who seemed like he knew something said in extreme cases, he uses nothing but "white gas." Which is a petroleum Naphtha (pure Gas), as you know. I have VM&P Naphtha on hand. The same thread, another person(s) suggested DIV and water. so... you know. Seem plausible to use this, and make sure it's air dried, mechanically (clean syringe) and naturally, under conditioned air? If you have a manual that'll help get to the innards, that'd be great. Need to clean the internals out after all this head cleaning and crud. Thanks for your time, Friend! If you need Screen stuff, DM me, anytime!

You have great videos and they have been very helpful in maintaining my Canon Pixma and Maxify printers. Printing every day or two certainly helps, however I still have issues with clogged print heads on occasion. Would refilling used cartridges with Windex with ammonia and running a clean cycle hurt the print heads? What about removing the print head and soaking the heads in a pool of Windex over night? I also wonder if some of my issues may be due to a problem with the printer cleaning mechanism or waste collector. Any suggestions? I'll be looking for more of your videos.

When canon printhead begin to show signs of clogging even though you are printing frequently it's likely due to the printhead begging to reach the point where it is near it's physical life. I would not load carts with with dex but I stead remove the carts and printhead and dribble Windex onto the affected ink ports while it rests on a Windex soaked folder paper towel. Ere are many videos on YT showing how to do this properly. But at the end of the day, canon PHs should not clog if you print often.

Jose, Your video and tips to perform the steps are very easy and thorough. I have an HP Officejet 4622 and My current issue is since I did the steps for each nozzle, My printer isnt recognizing the print head. What is that all about and what can I do about this. My Printer isnt that old and the usage was very slim. I shouldnt need a new print head since this the unit is 3 yrs old and hasnt been used often. Do you recommend the Windex or Rubbing Alcohol and if the Alcohol is ok, whats the best that works, like say 70%, 90%, 50%. Let me know what you think? I also have replacement ink cartridges because I cant find the ink refill kits they use to sell in the stores, so NOW I have bought 4 high yielding cartridges, which allows me to print off 500-800 sheets of paper which is what I need for my small business. I spent a lot of money buying a brand new Canon and used the cartridges it came with. Ink is expensive, so your input is helpful. Thank-you. Tom

I am a total dummy when it comes to HP printers. I only use and work with Canon and Epson Photo printers and not office printers. So I simply cannot even begin to suggest what to do. First I don't know what you mean by " I did the first steps for each nozzle"! Is the print head on these printers user replaceable? Have you been NOT using original ink? The older HP printers I remember used carts with built-in thermal prinheads. Are your carts not being recognized or the actual printhead? If it is the actual printhead then its time for a new machine. Did I hear hear you say you used the inks from a Canon printer on the HP????? I hope I read that wrong!! Instant death.

Thank you for helping so many of us! I think my problem with my Canon Pixma ip4500 may be the software update from MS. A new driver is not available for Win 10 with this, now 'obsolete' , printer. I have ink coming through the print head but the test print has NO color and the black is diminishing the more I do a clean/check nozzle/print test routine. Now, of course, that could be partly because the smaller black cart is now showing to be low on ink. I have taken the print head out and cleaned it with warm, then warmer, water and soaked with Windex. The print head can be removed so I can see that color ink is coming out but is not 'ejecting' onto paper. All in all, I think my formerly reliable little printer is kaput due to 'planned obsolescence'. Any thoughts about Win 10 being the culprit? Thank you.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 лет назад
If cleaning does not restore Ink flow while printing then yes. Maybe it's time for an upgrade. Canon printhead are very fragile and basically they are literally self destructing as they print. They will not last indefinitely. However it is better to just start fresh so you can have an up to date driver.

Good video Jose -- a guy asked you a question below, that I'd like to know -- do you have the exact link where to get that adapter ? Sure would be helpful. Are the adaptors still available ? What is the name and size description to make sure you get the right adaptor. You say use a syringe with tubing attached -- but everything has to fit, so what size of tubing ? and will the syringe head fit into it. I wonder if the receiving nipples on "all" Epsons are the same Jose ? Problem I'm having is finding the right size tubing -- where do you get it, and how do you know if you have the right size? Right now I'm using the plastic tube from the inside of a windex bottle that fits perfectly. Problem is you can't get much force with a syringe with a skinny little tip, to try and exert some pressure. Maybe surgical rubber tubing is the answer ? This Windex tube is the exact fit -- very rigid and stiff, and I plan to blow with my mouth to create some pressure. I'll do this til I find a better idea ?? I have an Epson Stylus CX 4800 that prints beautifully, when it's working, but right now the test results show broken lines on all colors, and I ran about 10 head cleanings, and now getting blank pages ? Maybe I ran the unit out of ink, as that's what head cleaning does. Anyways, your video is great Jose -- but it seems that everything always looks easy on RU-vid, til you try it yourself. I think the major problem is having the right size and type of tubing, and right size of syringe to make this all work out. ' If there's a product description or link you can give me to buy that adaptor I'd sure appreciate it. thanks -- Robert in Canada

Make note of any special tools you may need to reassemble the printer because you may need to search for them also. I have an NX420 that I am installing an excess ink tank on. Could using a generic chip affect print quality? I'm getting gaps on my nozzle checks on a Canon MP620 (My middle Magenta and Cyan are completely missing)And not getting solid blacks on the left surrounding bars perpendicular to the PGBK, C,C,C,M,M,M,Y,BK (along with the bottom half of the BK missing). Also vertical gaps on my H-K under manual alignment. I tried cleaning the print head but it didn't affect the print quality at all. Should I try oem ink? Is the china ink I purchased that cheap where actual quality is affected?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 лет назад
I think your print head could be permanently damaged. You printed already with carts that are not providing sufficient ink feed. That will damage your print head and that is why you now have large gaps in your nozzle check. You should NEVER use compatible carts ( not chips ) on Canon printers. You should only print with OEM carts which you can then modify, reset and refill. Look on eBay for a brand new OEM print head.

Epson artisan 1430 question: if you plan to store a printer for an extended time, what are your thoughts on taking all the carts out , replacing the carts with empty carts filled with windex and performing several print checks? Once the checks are complete , remove the carts with windex in them and place the printer in storage? There is no ink to print with but going through the print check process a few times would wash out the ink channels and leave them clean and ready for future printing. If my idea is totally bad, how would you recommend prepping a printer for prolonged storage?

You can not directly refill your original.yellow cart. You should have filled the replacement cart with the pc yellow ink. You now have a blocked yellow cart due to gelling. You will need window cleaner with Ammonia to clear that. Possibly. Do not print photos until you solve that.

You may have killed it. Are You using refillable or compatible or original carts? If you are getting slightly different nozzle check results, you are maybe still ok. Cleaning cycles are the only recourse. Cleaning, followed by a nozzle check. No regular printing at all! Rest it overnight. Repeat. No regular printing. If you show improvements then there's hope. If not then a new printer should be the next step.

The adapter is from Inkrepublic I think! Are you using refillable carts by any chance? If so then check your LC for the correct priming level. A varying result of nozzle check is always due to air due to a refillable that is not providing enough ink flow because of insufficient priming!
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 лет назад
You can use a plain tipped syringe with a piece or Rubber tubing the will fit the ink stem on the print head. No need for the adapter.

Thanks, will see site. I use the tube and a full refillable cart and put syringe on top and push cleaner in. I like the all in one syringe there. But do wonder how long the gasket will last. I use CIS, refillable's mostly. Can you say why the LC print check of print-head prints top bars but not bottom half LC only. ALL other colors are fine. I run clean, test, it will print bottom half of bars and not top? It witches and prints top but not bottom. It like witching back and forth from bottom half to top half. But mostly prints bottom half of bars. Than LC will fade all out printing a full LC page. I've use CIS, Refillable,and new LC carts. Same issue. All other colors print fine. I do see LC ink in tubing sucking well running a cleaning. So I feel the ink post is seating on the CIS.

The 99 cent store and dollar store Windex even the one with ammonia isn't as strong it's watered down. I don't think watered down is the Wright word because it applies at one point it was full strength. Probably if you purchase a bottle of ammonia at the same time you buy a 99 cent windex and add extra ammonia you will be okay.

Believe me. Windex doesn't need any more ammonia. It's strong enough for the purpose of unclogging printers.

Hi José, Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Question: when I run a nozzle check in my epson printer, black color doesn't print at all. Same happens when I try to print anything, selecting normal paper. I can only assume that my black printhead is clogged. However, if I select photo paper, I can print perfectly any document or photo even using normal paper! I have been trying to find in internet an explanation to this behaviour, without any success at all. Any idea what's going on? Assume that the same printhead is used regardless whether normal or photo paper is selected. Am I wrong?

@@cheo1949 Thanks your reply. I have an old Epson SX-415 multifunction which has been working perfectly during many years, with refillable cartridges and same bulk ink. Then, from one day to the next, black color didn't print at all. I searched in internet and read all I could find about unclogging (and this is how I found your highly appreciated videos). I tried all your recommendations, without success. I tried also replacing cartridge by a new one and to link printer to another PC, but nothing worked. I then came across a long thread in a webpage in which one of the commentators suggested to try the photo paper approach. I tried, and it worked! (although when switching back to plain paper, black refuses again to print). The next comments in the thread were full of positive inputs from people, with many different models of Epson printers, for whom this solution had also worked out perfectly, although nobody could provide any explanation why. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate again the webpage where I found this information. Openly, my printer works now, and I don't care much if I have to waste more ink than needed, but I am completely puzzled about this situation (which might help others too), but to which I have not been able to find any reasonable explanation.

Do you mean one single nozzle or a complete channel? If its only one actual nozzle and it's an epson it's not a huge issue. Unless it's permanently damaged it will eventually clear itself out. If other channels are clear there's no need to clean.

@@awincyglassndesign Install a piece of hose on the ink inlet to the print head and fill it with the solution. Let that slowly drip into the print head to soften the clog. If that does not work look for the service manual online for your printer and consider removing the print head from the printer so it can be soaked in the cleaning solution for a few days. That dried ink will eventually losen up and get you back to like new operation.

It has carts that ride on top of the print head. I do not have access to surgical tubing. How would I buy it? Amazon? I had ordered the aquarium tubing on Amazon - waited 3 days for it to come. I had originally preformed the soaked paper towel method of cleaning in your other video. It worked for a day and then went back to printing with lines. Tried this and it has made it worse. The ink cartridges are now 'out of ink' from trying to fix this thing. I'm debating whether or not I should shell out the $300 bucks and get a new printer.

how to clean just one printcard
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 5 лет назад
What do you mean ONE Printhead. A Print head is ONE complete unit composed of multiple COLOR Channels. Each corresponds to a color. TO clean one channel you load a syringe with CLEANING fluid for Print heads and NOT Thinner and attach a piece of tubing that will slip tight onto the Ink Spigot of the print head with THAT blocked color cart remove. You then ATTEMPT to inject the cleaning fluid directly into the channel and if you do it forcibly you will delaminate the print head and will be the end of the story. You can only do this on an epson printer with cartridges that float on the print head carriage and Nothing else.

@@cheo1949 Thanks Jose! It prints fine if I do a head cleaning first, but I'm tired of doing that. I print once every 2 to 4 weeks. The Epson is 4 years old and has only had Epson ink.

@cheo1949 5 лет назад
The problem is really lack of use. Printing every 2-4 weeks just isn't enough to keep those nozzles constantly cleared. You also never told me the model printer. Also performing this operation will cause a purge / cleaning cycle to occur every time I you perform it. As you would have flushed the print head with cleaning fluid and ink has to now flush it out. That would still only be a temporary cure. Printing often is the cure.
