Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is very difficult to diagnose AND to treat. In fact, it is often considered a diagnosis of exclusion, which means one receives the diagnosis after other possible conditions have been ruled out. So why is CFS so difficult to treat and manage? And what do physicians look for during their consultations?
Join Faith and Dr. Abhinav Singh, who is board-certified in internal medicine and sleep medicine, to learn more about how CFS is managed and treated.

Suggestion: 1. Don't drag patients through the "trauma", time and expenses of "diagnosis by exclusion/elimination" and trust what the patient is saying? 2. Don't ever, ever tell the patient that there is no known cure for "X", rather be truthful and say perhaps, (if you have to say something) "I personally don't know of a cure, but there may be others who do"?

I disagree on both points.

The CDC released a bulletin in 12/2024 stating 3.3 million people in the US have ME/CFS. There are also diagnostic criteria. SMH Do your homework.

I have the same problems, but my CFS started in 1957 when I had a particularly bad case of the flu as a freshman in high school. I ran a low grade fever for 5 years, with tender glands and various sinus infections and bronchitis. I've been in remission 3 different times but the last time I was taking a heart medication called Metoprol that had side effects that didn't kick in until months after starting it. It ruined my health and I haven't been able to recover since 2007. My body gives me the same problems you have, but I can do nothing for several months to change that my body has rebelled against going to sleep earlier than 4 am no matter what kind of magic pills my doctors come up with. I decided to go along with my body starting this morning, I've tried it all, sleeping pills, alcohol, (bad idea) muscle relaxers, and combinations of all those and a couple of other meds that I'm not sure what they do but one of them seems to help. I also take a couple of hundred bucks of health supplements a month. So far all I can see is that I look 20 years younger than my age, I started them in my 30s. I also had the money to see doctors about allergies, I'm HIGHLY allergic to most foods, a candida doc, and an immunologist. I suspect my age is keeping me from from remission this time, but I refuse to give up!! Oh yes, the pain of CFS turned into Fibromyalgia after I started that Demon Heart Medicine, but I hurt much less after a good night's sleep, that is when your body repairs itself.

No cure, but I've been in remission 3 times. you have to learn how to rest more, my sleep always goes back to normal when I'm in remission. But it's been years since I could manage that, but you learn to pace yourself if remission is in the cards for you.

@lauragestes8847 Thanks for the suggestions. I am going on 8 years of this disease. I have done everything you have suggested on a consistent basis. My frustration comes from a lack of study and funding that could maybe repurpose medication that could help us function better day to day. I actually had some special testing done by a research doctor, and my results came out positive. His protocol suggested medications that are off-label. Because the meds are off-label, I can not find a doctor to treat me. They are afraid of losing their license. I totally understand that. I have asked a total of 5 different doctors. Maybe the problem lies with the FDA or the CDC? I just think if I accept all reliability, then the decision should be left up to me and my doctor. No repercussions should take place for the doctor or myself. These are not trial drugs. These are drugs already in use. There is too much government interference when it comes to health care. Sorry for the rant.

@bobbychaudhury6304 There are medications for rapid heartbeat and anxiety, and depression. I will not list them here, but I see both a functional medicine doctor and a psychiatrist. I get through the day, but sometimes it's hard. I also have ongoing pain off and on from spinal fusion surgery. I would say reach out to doctors to help you cope.
