From 1971, here's Lawrence Welk and his Champagne Music Makers with the instrumental version of "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" with Bob Smale at harpsichord, Buddy Merrill on guitar, backing vocals by Gail Farrell, Mary Lou Metzger and Norma Zimmer plus plenty of brass from the boys in the band!

Such Class!! I was a kid during this era. It was the last of the Kennedy culture where women were proud to be beautiful and dressed to go everywhere. My mom wore her hair in all of those styles. It was a wonderful time to be alive.

1:02 My parents are in this video, pink dress/red shirt. My dad kept trying to dance in front of the camera. When it aired we got telephone calls from surprised relatives and friends.

That's some mean harpsichord! My folks used to watch this show when I was a kid, I couldn't stand it then, but it's pretty cool to watch now.

In a culture immersed in sneering, "ironic" hipster garbage, this stuff is downright subversive. I love it.

Evidently you haven't heard Lawrence's 1976 album "Nadia's Theme" where they tackle "Baretta's Theme" and also "Theme from Swat" and additionally "Breakwater" from the album "Scarlett O'Hara" in 1963. or even "Hey Jude" from the "Galvesston" album. But, speaking as a musician myself, Welk got away from the pop music covers as he explains in one of his books. He thought doing pop tunes was a mistake, many musicians agree, and his later albums reflect a return to more timless material.

It's kind of different having the trumpets in front and the trombones in the back because usually the trumpets are behind the trombones. I'm curious why the trumpets are in front of the trombones in this song.

The trumpets are the stars of this arrangement. So it makes sense they are up front.
