You didn't hear a difference between the "high" and "low" inputs because there was none. The way these Fender amps are wired, input #2 only functions as a "low" input IF THERE IS NO PLUG INSERTED INTO INPUT #1. With 2 cords plugged into the amp going to your "A/B" switch box, they were both functioning as "high" inputs. Try plugging into one input at a time and you will hear the difference right away. especially with single coils.

Agree; I do notice a volume difference when I use 1 vs 2 (reissue) and same guitar. I had no idea about the single coil vs humbucker though, makes sense thanks for the info!
@VN9001
@VN9001 2 года назад
This is true. There is a very noticeable difference between inputs 1 and 2 (when used one at a time). Just try swapping between a Telecaster and a Les Paul with these two inputs to accentuate it. Some hum buckers I've used are rather low output (some of Gretsch's models for example) and they sound great in input 1. I also have some really hot single coils (some Seymour Duncun shredder coils for example) that I run in input two because they're so hot. No rules, plug in wherever you want, but there is a logical reason for the two inputs on the DR.

As you may have noticed the bright cap has maximum effect at lower settings of the volume control, and progressively less as you turn it up. This is because the cap is bypassing the series element of the volume control. At 10 there will be effectively no difference.
@JonMonter

So lots of people clip that bright cap out of the circuit, which I've been considering.. what is your take on that idea??
@JonMonter
@JonMonter 2 года назад
Hey Dustin! Yes these amps are very bright indeed on the vibrato side. I did the mod you are talking about, my tech removed the feet of the cap to take it out of the circuit but is very easy to re sodder it back in there. I am putting out a new input comparison vid with this amp very soon so you'll be able to compare these sounds with once the cap is removed. I would recommend this mod BTW, thanks for watching!

Thank you for helping me id and locate the 47pf capacitor. It sits on the Vibrato Channel Volume pot. Regarding input 1 for single coil and input 2 for humbucking pickups. That really twisted my brain around. I've never ever heard that before. Did you learn that from another source or just conclude it yourself. It sounds logical, I'm just blown that I've never heard that before. I've been using Fender amps since 1964.
@JonMonter
@JonMonter Год назад
Thanks Carl, I never heard it before either - my tech told me about it. Check out my channel b/c I re did the input comparison - you cannot have cables into both inputs b/c it negates the resistor in input 2. But its a game changer on the deluxe - you can get cleaner cleans at a higher volume with hum buckers

@pharmerdavid1432
@pharmerdavid1432 2 года назад
I couldn't hear the difference in the video, because of low quality sound reproduction, but here using my DR clone I can definitely tell a difference between "normal" and "vibrato" channel, and between input "1" and "2". I generally prefer the lower gain inputs in most amps, including my Deluxe Reverb (clone). I was only using the vibrato channel, because I like reverb, but after reading some opinions (there are just a FEW - eh?), I put a 12AX7 in to activate the "normal" channel, and it really is a bit fatter, with more bass (less treble?). Those four holes are all different, subtle, but I can definitely hear the difference. Even with a stratocaster, the lower gain holes sound better, and I'm liking that normal channel. If I connect the reverb to normal channel, I wonder if that will degrade the tone...?
@JonMonter
@JonMonter 2 года назад
Hey David! Thanks for watching and yes there are many opinions about what to change / mod with these DR. I must also say that the input comparison was done incorrectly (using both inputs at the same time negates the resistor, so both inputs sound identical) I re did that part and will release it soon. Also if you feel the vibrato channel has too much treble (a common complaint) you can take that tone cap out of the circuit and it will sound like the normal side. I did this mod and I really like how it sounds now. Im not sure about connecting the normal channel to the reverb. Im sure you can find 100 opinions on that one lol

The high pass cap you are referring to (as a bright switch always on) acts as everything above the frequency it allows is on 10, so technically to replicate that treble pass you would have to have the vol & treble dimed.

I didn't hear any significant difference with anything you did. I have a 65 Reissue which sounds pretty good to me, kind of like most Fender amps. To tell the truth I think all the hype about the old amps being better is to justify the crazy prices people ask for them, and any difference between the old ones and new ones IMHO is very subtle. Over the years I've had a few of the older ones, a blackface Bandmaster (it was OK), a Blackface Bassman (great bass amp for small venues, used for bass in a 3 piece acoustic band), a silverface Quad Reverb (loud and very very heavy, weird Master Volume control), a Super 60 rackmount (OK), and now a 65 Deluxe Reissue (probably the best of all of them). BTW I sold all of the others with no regrets, except for maybe the Bassman, and I wish I still had that one.

no different to the sounds im getting from any other amp or the Logic Guitar Rig in the studio. an amp'd signal is what it is. obviously eq compression and mic placement, room and fx can make these amps come alive, but the vintage stuff is way overpriced.
