Do You Know Why Mom's Panda is So Big in TURNING RED 

Very interesting, amigo. It makes quite a lot of sense considering that Ming, who bottled up her emotion when she was younger, only did so because Grandma Wu was very strict, as well as old school. So, the mother-daughter relationship between Ming and Wu was stressful for Ming in more ways than we can begin to imagine.

This movie really gives a whole lot levels of a mother-daughter Relationship. Like Ming is very protective towards her daughter while at the same time, Mei wants to live her life and be whoever she is without so much protection from her mother. We can’t blame our parents though, but we just have to prove them that we’re not a little child anymore and that they have to deal with us growing up and live a good life.

I thought ming's was big because of her pent up stress and pressure she and everyone else puts on her to be perfect, and that a single small thing outside her control would make her lose her composure and make excessive attempts to overcompensate.

In my opinion, if the story centered around Ming and her Mother and Meilin Lee being the glue to bring them back together I believe this would have worked out also, although this would mean that all of the Coming of Age setting and Comedy elements would be more redundant but I would love to see how they would have executed this plot

I think I'll have to disagree, only because Mei's dad told her that when her mother and her grandma fought over him, she was still giant. I thought Ming's panda was big because she's destructive when she got angry.

2:23 I just realised, Robaire holding Mei like this is a reference to the movie _Dirty Dancing_ . :) It works even better because both movies are set two decades prior to when they came out, with _Turning Red_ having just come out and set in the 2000s, while _Dirty Dancing_ came out in the 80s and is set in the 60s.

Bandit theory...doesnt hold up. Mei's dad mentioned Ming has going Kaiju before.....during an argument with her mom over him. no one taking anything away.....unless you count him taking her heart which she wanted....its just super raw emotion. if Mei's highest emotion was a 5 (my guess that does it) it makes her normal big...but Ming was a 10. I think it works like the Hulk...its not the reason but the anger ammount

The thing is we see Sung Yi’s size in the end when she flys Meiling up at the end. The reason Ming Lee’s panda isnt as big when they are trapping the panda again, its because you couldn’t fit the panda through the portal.

Another reference to 4☆Town being 'Bandits' could be the fact that they first appeared on stage in cages, like criminals. This was probably intended to be like song-birds, as they 'sprout' wings a moment later, but it works both ways

The story explained by Mei’s father shows that when she was young, her red panda was very big. He was not surprised when she transformed back because she had always been this size in her red panda form. Even though these points could be correct, she had no daughter or similar relationship when her transformation began (as a young person). She was not trying to protect someone. Her relationship with her mother and the disagreement about Mei’s dad could sum up these feelings but this would mean that there is more than just what is said in this video.

In the bamboo forest, when Mei encounters young Ming, she kind of explains what caused her to become Godzilla sized panda. I.e. that she got tired of being perfect and having to do everything that her mother tells her to do that she got angry, which resulted in hitting her mother (Grandma Wu), which is possible that the scar on Grandma Wu's brow was caused by that.

Interesting, however, then how do you describe how Ming Lee was so big BEFORE Mei was born? Remember, Mei's dad said she was big...

What about that one comment her dad made about how he knew her “panda” was really big

This is a very interesting theory, but when the grandmas get rid of their pandas and mei is the only one left in the bamboo forest, you see Sung Yi transform into her red panda with Mei and it isn’t big.

Theory the mom has still getting her time of the month and the old ladys are done with theirs so the mom has more period panda power than anyone

From my interpretation of the film, I dont think this is the reason for her being so big. I think the reason is due to how often the panda has come out, how many times. first evidence: The father told Meilyn (idk if I spelled it right) about Ming's big panda form, which meant that it wasnt just at the end of the movie that she was big Second evidence: Mei's panda is always consistent throughout the movie, it doesnt matter if its sadness, excitement, or rage that brought out her panda, it was always the same size (I assume the size change occurs over a long period of time) Third evidence: The aunts and grandmother's forms are a bit bigger than Mei's, which would make sense, they're older so have likely had their pandas come out more, however they were able to seal it away quickly before it got too out of hand. whereas in this theory that its directly just emotions, they'd probably be as big as Mei, as they had the same reason: determination to save Ming Fourth evidence: They stated near the beginning that the more the panda comes out, the stronger and harder to seal it gets, but I assume this strength also is correlated to size too

The fact that Mei Meis dad talks about her moms huge form and then at the end saying "I told you she was big" dissproofs your theory. It ends up proveing that bottled up emotions and\or intense emotions are what cause the panda size. Mei Meis wasn't that big becauae she had her friends to take away the stress. Where her mom only had Meis dad but even so that wasn't till later in life amounting to huge amount and cantity of bottled up emotions.

Fan story : remember what told ming's grandmother, that they were close to each other before,and I think that when she's high school she has huge crush with mei's dad and grew each more loved same as her grandmother. When they were ready to tell the truth, her grandmother didn't want to accept him (mei's dad) and her daughter ming furious as hell ming's was soo angry that her panda hid it well was exposed she hid it well when she was 15 but the size was different than before it is gigantic, she have a fight with her grandmother that event they argue and argue as mei's dad watching hopelessly her mad made her mother hurt as sadly she cried with tears from what she'd done soo she had decided to seal this monster and forget from the past. As years by, she decided she had to protect to her daughter from emotions so she planned to don't make mei any friends and relationships she hates every teenagers because she don't want her daughter suffered from she did before so that's why her mother was very aware to mei's wants (like going on the concert) friends and relationships

personally i think it revolves around what brought the panda out in the first place. my theory about how pandas reveal themselves is when the panda holder experiences the most emotion they have felt in their life. for mei she felt a lot of different emotions, all pretty strong the night before she got her panda. and in this theory i’m assuming ming’s panda came out when her mom disapproved of jin. and we also know ming felt a lot more pressure than mei which caused her emotions to burst out, making her panda bigger. since the panda is basically a defense mechanism it would make sense the size changes depending on how in danger the panda holder feels to accommodate with the danger level. so maybe the reason ming’s panda was so big was because she felt a lot of emotion and felt in danger which caused her panda to be huge.

I don't agree. Mei's father has seen Ming's panda before and it was always this huge. And the panda don't really change in size if they did filmmakers would have hinted it somewhere. For sure Mei's emotional outburst throughout the movie was not of the same calibre. If we go by the emotion logic than maybe it depends on how emotional they are generally. Or their ability to control emotions.

That's actually the first idea, it's explained by the crew behind Turning Red. The size was determined by emotions but it was scrapped because it was confusing and inconsistent (CMIIW) also, the original plan was to make Mei and her Mom fight like Godzilla vs Kong in the middle of the city... But it's scrapped because it's going too far from the main topic which is kids growing up. so they made it that Mei stay in the same size no matter how strong her emotion is, and just made her mom as big as kaiju without much explanation.

i have a theory thoo!! jin (mei's dad) said that even before her mother was already that big, and when she turned once ming lee and her mother fought because of jin....but it may be bigger then that when she was protecting/ fighting for something even bigger, mei. maybe at the time she first turned into a red panda she was already pregnant with mei hence why defending and protecting over jin was a big deal at the time... I disagree, I think they all just differ in sizes and it doesn't depend on their emotions. Remember when Mei's Dad mentioned that when her mom and her GRANDMA fought, he mentioned that Mei Ling's Panda is gigantic and almost destroyed half of the temple. Mei Lings panda shouldn't be that big since she's mad at her mom, and there's nothing to with bandits

I actually kinda disagree, because of the line from Mei's Dad Jim. It could be that the size is dependent little control you have over your emotions. And because when not in panda form Ming is the one that never seems to be able to keep her cool and is always a little over the top we see this is her personality, and so it would make sense that this would be the size of her panda. I think if the particular emotional outbreak determined the size that we would see Mei's Panda vary over the course of the movie. I also think you can't really use what's seen in the spirit realm as evidence for what happens outside of the spirit realm. Jim describes Ming's panda as huge, even when it wasn't a conflict about "raiders" threatening her daughter. The size of ming's panda gives greater justification for why the pandas must be locked up, but Mei's great ability to control her plus the smaller size presents the characters with reason for why it should be Mei's choice

If you'll notice, the Grandma pauses at entering the portal and appears for a second or two to ponder on keeping her Panda, but decides to get rid of it anyway. There's lots of little comedic bits too. Abby's face and body language as Mei's Panda tells the truth to her massive Panda Mom is absolutely hysterical. 😆

I think that the real reason is the intensity of the emotions the first time you use it is what uses the size remember when Mei talks to her father he said that her first time using or the first time he saw her using it was about Mei's grandma didn't like Mei's father so that would possibly explain the size of her red panda and why Mei's was the smallest due to hers being caused by a dream

This actually make sense. There really isn’t much lore to Turning Red and it is pretty understandable, but if there ever turns out to be a series or sequel or something I would like to see it focus more on story. Because I feel like the story can go deeper

She kept her intense emotions sealed up for a long time, and when Mei abandons the ritual to attend the 4*Town concert, Ming lets her inner beast run rampant, then she undergoes her transformation and BOOM! She becomes a Godzilla-sized red panda! I'm not gonna lie, it's honestly terrifying how pissed she gets!

I thought it was big because she has a necklace, right? I think its the necklace that it has a connection about Sun Yee or its about Sun Yee, so the red panda of Sun Yee, which was huge, went on mints body ( if it makes any sense ) so thats my theory.

If Turning Red 2 is possible I wouldn't mind Mei's family deciding to keep their pandas too in it since Mei is happy keeping hers and I bet her dad is one too. And I wonder who would be the main antagonist in Turning Red 2.

One thing that I think that has to do with Mings panda is the dark side because she said the red panda has a dark side to it so maybe that’s why her panda is so big and that’s why she hurt her mother (the scar on her face)

Also Ming Lee said "I thought I had more time" in the temple,also when shes crying at the ritual,you can tell she got her red panda later than Mei,since this movie is about puberty and periods.

This is similar to a theory I stated in another video. Ming Lee is the middle child among her sisters. I figured the panda’s size is dependent on the fight-or-flight induced stress levels. And it is psychological that the middle sibling is sometimes used as an emotional punching bag from both ends, and attend to go through all other kinds of emotional struggles. In a way, the theory in this video makes a little more sense than mine. And here I thought Ming is afraid of failing her mother for not being the ideal perfect daughter, causing all of that bottled emotions to go volcanic. (-w-u)

I know it's based on emotion, but I doubt it was 4town that made her that big. Because her panda has always been big. Even the husband has seen it. No one was surprised about the size, meaning her panda has always been big. I believe it's because of her repressed emotions for years, mei Mei is the youngest panda in the family, but the rest got their pandas as adults with mind changing to confront her mother about marrying her husband. So I don't think it's 4town, but instense emotions, Ming's own are really intense especially since she surpresses it most of the timw
