That's the thing about nostalgia. I was fortunate enough to have a pretty great childhood, so I most often look back to it as my idealized time. But then I realize that not everyone had the same experience, and in fact some are happy to break free from their past and never look back. I suppose not having that safe space of the distant past to retreat to could be considered both tragic but yet it could also provide an individual with the perk of moving forward unburdened by the same chains of nostalgia.

I’m always looking for games I didn’t get a chance to play as a kid and after I find one I’m looking for another one instead of finishing the first game I played. If I want to go to the beach, a theme park, a fancy restaurant, or cook a crazy experimental mean I’m the one who has to organize that now when it use to be my parents. I have less free time, but the games that require huge time commitments don’t appeal to me as much as they used to. If you go a long time without playing some of these retro classics from the 90’s and early 2000’s then coming back to them in your later 30’s can be VERY refreshing and enjoyable just like those simpler times as a kid and teenager. But having the time is difficult when you have to be on the go.

I grew up in the 80's & 90's. I really miss hanging with friends playing video games together, biking. sports such as street hockey & ice hockey & video game & movie rental store along with arcades. I know they still have arcades now but there was a whole lot more of them in the 80's & 90's. It's just mostly the socializing I miss. As far as being an adult now in 2024 & onward I love my life a whole lot better than when I was a kid. I love the fact that I can drive an SUV & that it has amazing features like apple car play to basically go anywhere & not be lost. I love the fact now that I am making a lot of money just working a 30 hour a week schedule. I love the fact that I can play any video game I want with Emulators & that I bought a small collection of physical video games. Technology such as my cell & pc. For movies & tv shows I buy blu rays & watch them etc. As a kid school was something I really hated. I was picked on, bullied, sexually & physically abused. Those were more of my high school years more than anything. 5 years as a teenager feels like 20. You talked about homework. Yeah I had that throughout elementary school & high school. Yeah I did have some great experiences in school like my high school friends who some are still my friends till this day but there was also the negative too. School is 30 hours a week & for what? You learn useless things that don't matter in your every day life, homework everyday then you got to pass exams to get a high school diploma. Now I don't worry about those things.
@dariusq8894
@dariusq8894 4 месяца назад
The things I miss most about childhood are a result of social change. I miss going to the arcades. I miss going to the comic book shop on 'New Comic Book Day' (aka. Wednesdays). I miss feeling safe going downtown to hang out for the day. These are all things which I can technically still do, but the passage of time has changed them to the point where I no longer do them anymore.

I’ve been thinking about this exact topic a TON lately. In the past two years I went from working then hanging out with my wife and playing video games all day long, then writing for IGN and podcasting about video games to now having a fixer upper house, having our first child, and maybe getting to play for an hour a week. I still consume a ton of video game related content in the background while I’m doing chores, but I’ve had a hard time dealing with the fact that that part of my life is more or less over, or at least over for a good long while if I’m lucky. Don’t get me wrong, being a father is amazing, and just yesterday we started mapping out which chores we’re going to tackle on which days and which things we need to replace sooner rather than later for the house. But finding that balance of being a responsible adult, father, husband, and friend while still enjoying my love of games and making sure I have ‘me time’ has been one of the most challenging things I’ve had to experience in my life (mainly because of the endless nature of it)

I don't think I miss being a kid as much as I miss the era of society in the late 80's early 90's. I have been pondering this for awhile lately and think although some luxuries we take for granted now we use everyday (such as the internet) would be missing, I feel the social interactions and how we function was much better. Give me riding my boke till the street lights come on and going to a video store over Netflix any day

Ah yes. Netflix isn't the only streaming service we got tons now. Even if you don't like streaming services you can buy blu rays of movie & tv shows. Also you have to remember cable & VCR's were barely a thing until the 90's. Also t.v watching your shows you may have had a black & white t.v & then a colored t.v... A lot of us didn't have cable so channels would be a snowy receptions. Then no DVR existed so you either had to watch your tv shows live when they aired or tape them on your VCR with those 6-8 hours SLP mode tapes. Now lets say you want to watch Star Trek The Next Generation, on blu ray with clarity & they have a lot more content on them. It's very cheap to buy also.

awesome talk here Bird Man, and thanks for asking. I miss different things about being a kid, and a teen, and even being in my 20s. friends, family, being super fit, the wonder of having first crushes and girlfriends, definitely all the old shows, videogames and movies, but what I miss most is the feeling of "I got plenty of time". I still do have plenty of time, just noticeably less, so now it is indeed crunch time, and actually, that's a great thing. and now I do math on what quarter or third of my life I'm in. I'm 32 soon, so if I live to be 130, my goal, I'm still in my 1st quarter, barely! XD

Early retirement is the key. You get to be nostalgic about the times when you went to the store and bought new NES games, AND you get to play those same games as much as you want (and be better at them).

As a kid (teenager), I have to say that I cannot wait to be an adult. Honestly being a teenager is weird because everyone has high expectations of you because you are older but also give you no responsibilities because you are too young. So it’s kinda this odd state of being told to do more and expected to do less. I can’t wait for people to finally understand that I can have responsibilities like an adult. I mean, how else am I going to afford to get a collection of video games from 20 years before I was born? Like everyone’s like “get a job” then when I try to get a job they’re like “you’re too young”. Idk it’s just weird. Anyway, I hope to look back on my childhood one day and be happy. I don’t know if I will, but I guess I’ll see someday if I can make my future self proud of all the things I accomplish as a kid.

When I was a kid, people kept telling me I was weird. Teachers and school faculty pushed to make me take medication to be "normal" because I didn't want to sit still for six hours. I wasn't allowed to do much of anything except play video games. Now I'm all grown up. I can ride motorcycles, there is a stunning curvy woman with blue-green eyes who lives in my house and calls me "husband", I get to not only fly drones in my spare time I get paid to fix them, I've made friends with all the neighbors, adulthood is much more fulfilling and entertaining than being a child ever was.

I used to think I'd kill to go back to my childhood, but I came to realize that I had fond memories for games even from my recent adulthood, and that changed my attachment to the past. Those memories became more positive knowing I'm still creating positive memories, even with the frustrations of adulthood.

Im glad that while im an adult I still got some twilight years here where I can still not have *so much* responsibility that I dont have a lot of time to myself. Sure, I dont have *as much* time to myself as before, but I sure have a lot of time to myself. A few chores, a bit of freelance work I do for spending money I do more than anything, and some stuff that isnt paid but I technically get some form of work experience from. In fact the only thing that seems to suck up my time unintentionally is sleep and youtube. As in, I sometimes sleep for 12 hours if im not careful. And that's less time for playing videogames. Point is it is nice to be at an age where I understand videogames on a deeper level, but I still have enough free time to really dig into them.

I miss the joy of playing the first three Mario games for the first time and feeling like every game that I rented was great!! Even the excitement of bringing home a game after renting it and looking forward to playing it just for a few days was amazing! There have been countless moments like that in my childhood and teenage years, which I’m so grateful for.😊 Life hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows for me, but one thing I love about being an adult is all the good memories I have made along the way and can reminisce about.

with the proper music, office work can feel like a videogame, its kind of similar somehow, keybord.. screen, calculating the right upgrades, jumping throw the correct cells on a spreadsheet. If you live where I live, walking your dog can feel like real life Castlevania😆. If you work at a factory you might as well be playing Megaman.

I miss my childhood overall, because I had a great one, which is off course an absolute blessing on itself. We didn’t have gaming consoles in our home, but I made up for that as a young adult. I bought my first gameboy advanced with some awesome games: Zelda, Mario and Wario were my favorites. Now, as a 49 yo, I haven’t had a tv in my house for more than a decade, but I still enjoy some good old handheld gaming on my Nintendo ds, 3ds and Switch. I work as a taxi driver and I often take my Switch with me to kill the time in between rides, so that’s a great having-fun-while-taking-care-of-responsibilities-combo😊

Yes, yes I do. Being an adult, like all things has it's pros and cons. But the way the economy is, the cost of living vs wage ratio...health issues (for the past few years. Am 44 now). The stress of work, responsibilities etc..the dating scene since getting out of a bad 17yr relationship in 2019 is horrible. So yeah...being a kid was amazing!

Having a 40 hour a week job with minimal paid time off leaves little time for hobbies, let alone the essentials and self care. I miss having spring, summer, and winter breaks, and other holidays as a kid where you had lots of time on your hands to do things at a slow pace. Open world games make me kinda sad because I would love to have the time to just experience a world at a leisurely pace. I loathe having to consult How Long to Beat in order to see if I should even bother playing. Something.

I do and don't miss being a kid. I do miss being a kid as I got to spend a lot of time with good friends and the feeling of video games in general was quite exciting (it easy to get jaded with gaming as an adult). Not to mention, having a lot of time to play said games as a kid. I don't miss going to school as a kid or having a lack of freedom when living at home with parents. Adulthood is hit and miss, too. Having a job, you can afford any game you want, but the downside is not having the time to play them as you're working 40 hours a week or you have to catch up on the weekend with chores and errands. Another downside to adulthood is your social circle begins to shrink and sometimes you just are too tired to enjoy what you used to enjoy. I will say the big plus of adulthood is when you are able to invite other gamer friends over to hang out and play games all afternoon/night! That is always incredibly fun!

I mostly miss the simplicity of the older days more than my childhood itself. I am definitely revisiting things like movies and comic books and video games to get that good nostalgic feel. But I mostly miss how quiet the world was before the internet. You could actually take time to just focus on something without having multiple notifications going off or social medias eating up all of your free time. I do love the internet, don't get me wrong. I do love living in the future haha. But only when it's useful or helpful. Not so much when it comes to dealing with ads and the loud ass news or social media with the notifications and the dings and the bings. Nobody really just lives in the moment anymore because there is always a pop-up now. I do not miss the beatings and the yelling and the zero control that came with being a kid, so that much of childhood can stay in the past for all I care. I much prefer being an adult with control of my own life.

Thanks for this, Bird. In the summer as a kid me and my 3 brothers would go to my cousin Cole's house circa 98-00. He had everything. Good gaming PC that ran starcraft and RCT2 like a dream. N64, PS1, SNES of course, dreamcast when it came out. We had a 4 system rotation, and we would rotate on the hour so we each could play what we wanted on each system. This is where I was introduced to such titles as lords of the realm, killer instinct, final fantasy "3" and 7, wild arms, suikoden, pokemon, balders gate 2... so much more. There was also an hour of outside play each day, but man those were the days. I'm grateful that my cousin was the spoiled one and not me. Also grateful that he shared his awesome stuff. Peace be with you.

I have many of the Resident Evil OST on my phone that I often listen to when I don't have the time to actually play the games again. Hearing just the music for the Resident Evil games takes my mind back to when I was kid excited to get home at the end of the day and kill some zombies with a headshot from my shotgun.
