Something I think about (a lot) is the people who love video games, but don't play the older ones. In this video, I'll offer some perspective on whether or not they're missing. As you might guess, my answer is "yes".

The simple controls of retro games and quick up and go is what draws me now even more into the classic games I grew up with. The animations and graphic limitations really brought creative solutions to developers! Something I feel is a little lost now except in the Indie gaming sector. It’s tough to take on a game like Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis but geez one day I’ll complete that sucker!! Great vid as always bird!

A major pet peeve of mine is someone trying to tell me that the reason I like something is nostalgia. In 2013, I decided to go back and play all the games I missed growing up. Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life and Half-Life 2, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Baldur's Gate I and II, Chrono Cross, Super Metroid, Super Mario 64, Planescape: Torment, Xenogears and on and on and on...and to be honest, a lot of those older games are now some of my favorite games of all time. No nostalgia at all...just recognizing greatness. Another thing to remember is you can't really understand real greatness without playing a lot of games for a particular old system or time frame. By that, I mean you need a real basis of comparison.
@GeorgeZimmermen

@damonke79
@damonke79 10 месяцев назад
@@GeorgeZimmermen Actually I started with the Atari 2600. Moved onto the NES in 1987 or so and that REALLY got me into gaming but the truth is...I grew up poor and games were strictly Christmas and Birthday things. Moved to AZ with my Mom and stepdad in the summer of 1990 and never really got a system of my own until the Playstation in 1998. I played a good amount of SNES games on my best friend's system but we only played sports games/racing games so I was at the mercy of whatever he played. I also never had a pc that could do anything much more than Doom until about 10 years ago when I got a PC for school that had a graphics card because I needed it to handle 3d graphics for school. It wasn't until then that I went back and played old PC classics. So yeah...I've been gaming for about 40 years now...but missed a lot growing up, mainly because I grew up in a poor household

Well, I always thought I was missing out because I didn't grow up with a lot of older consoles and games that people think of as iconic. The Super Nintendo, The N64. Literally any Sega console. And not only was I interested in the games, but I was interested in the history too. Nintendo Power magazines, old ads, posters and so on. Collecting games is much of an extension of that. Because, of course there's far much cheaper and affordable alternatives and I do know of those. But having a Super Nintendo game with the original box, the manual and holding it in my hand feels like having history.

You touched a theme that many people never thought of and I realized long ago: playing old music in the background while playing retro games! Listening to music from the same age as the games makes the experience MUCH better! Most (if not all) of the songs are on RU-vid's official music channels, all you have to do is create a personalized playlist and play it on random mode, kinda like a music channel from back in the days!

Yes and No. Competent gamers with an appreciation for quality are likely not missing out on retro games, having either lived through that era and played them initially or else emulated them or experienced them today in some other fashion. The knuckle dragging, troglodytic mouth breathers who lavish undeserved praise on broken garbage like Fortnite or Bethesda Softworks titles are undoubtedly missing out on the retro experience. But this is like saying a hobo scrounging around in the dumpster for a half eaten sandwich is missing out on caviar, filet mignon and fine wine.

Each video game era has its own aesthetic that has become a part of the modern gaming zeitgeist. This is why there are so many pixel art throwbacks. In that sense, newer gamers are not missing out. I also love how the home-brew scene is creating new titles for some of these older consoles. What’s old becomes new again, as long as people keep it alive.

Another cool thing about retro titles is when they’re re-imagined by the fan base. Rayman, Metroid, Sonic and many others have had a remix, or modern touch ups that inject new life into these older games and have made them more accessible in terms of hardware and in some instances, adjusted the difficulty or got rid of the lives system.

Believe it or not, there was an era mostly during the late 90's when 2D games were automatically considered "old" even if they were fairly new. 3D polygon systems like the PS1 and N64 were all the rage and playing an older system like the NES was considered odd by some people. Welp, I was one of those weird people. The new 3D games were great but there was just something different about still playing the older 2D games. Luckily for me, this era is when I started collecting and I took advantage of "old" games that were dirt cheap. Cheap because the mass thought they were old and outdated. Now with indie devs and retro game communities, 2D retro style games are more popular than ever. I can only imagine how greasy those controllers must be at the chicken shack...

I hate retro games. They sit there, taunting me. I want to play them and I keep feeling like I don't have the time that I really want to just play the day away. I try to balance between them and newer games. Newer games take so long to finish, not like the week it used to take to finish games as a kid. My Saturn weeps. My GameCube whimpers. My N64 silently grimaces and my Dreamcast is whirring. Maybe some day, when I retire. Now that'll be the life. Because I don't hate retro games, I love them. I wish I had more time for them.

@benjib2691
@benjib2691 Год назад
@@HollowRickIt's kind of interesting because for me the dark age is essentially the PS4/One generation onward. I think that's because I might be at least a generation younger than you both. I'm from 1999, so I grew up with the Wii, DS and 360 (a little later). Imho the PS3, 360 and Wii are legendary consoles with legendary games, just like the 6th gen was. The 7th gen was one of the only generation where all consoles were really successful for each of the big players : the DS is the 2nd most sold console of all time, the PSP sold really well, just like the PS3, 360 and Wii. DLC wasn't really an issue compared to lootboxes and other things I don't really like, that came after, download sizes and software updates were kept to a minimal (or almost inexistent in the case of the Wii and DS) and each system has a strong personality just like on the 6th gen. I also began to purchase retro consoles and games in middle-school around 2013/2014. First a SNES (PAL, as I live in Europe NTSC consoles are harder to find in stores, which was my preferred method of buying back then), then a N64, then a PS2, then a Gamecube, then a Megadrive (which was switched to 60Hz very quickly), etc... until today 😃. I'm kind of sad because now that I have my first job and that I am in financial capacity to buy a much bigger amount of things, some games and systems have drastically gone up in price even since 2014. But at last I have bought almost every system I'm interested in (I would like to get a PC Engine and a few arcade boards like Street Fighter 2) and the corresponding everdrives or ODEs 🙂.

Are your points about why people don't like retro gaming is spot on. People just want to move on to the next new console & throw the old ones in the trash or sell them. I used to do this all the way up to PS3. I realized wait, these games aren't good I want to go back to play retro games. When I went back to replaying them as an adult, I was that much better at these games compared to what I was when I was a kid. As a kid it would take me months or years to beat something like Mega Man 2 which isn't the hardest game or something like Sonic. People claiming that retro games are too hard? I got news for you, Modern games are just as hard especially when they remake them retro like Cup Head, Mighty no 9, Kaze & The Wild masks etc. Also you can play games from roms on your pc or Ever drives. You can use save states & game genie codes for these retro games to make it that much easier.

Some things are just fun! Doesn't matter if time has passed, games don't "age" - they're just 1's and 0's. What DOES change - what makes us say games don't age well - is simply that we aren't restricted to crappy games. The ONLY reason I ever sat and played all 99 levels of Slider on the Game Gear (ugh) was because I only had three games and the best games on the market weren't THAT much better. One of the reasons Zelda 3 has "aged so well" is because it was FUN at the time, so will always be. That said, the entire gaming industry has evolved in at least a few ways. We went from 1 hit death, to lose your rings or armor, to where we are now where you have infinite health as long as you hide and heal for a moment lol. I think that has made gamers "softer" ... which is kind of a good thing. Gaming should be fun, and maybe even relaxing, not just a constant challenge. .... just like you're saying around 8:50 . For old guys like me, "retro gaming" isn't even retro gaming - it's just keepin on playin the games we've always been playin =D.

Hey man, great video as usual :) I have a question, I've recently got a slim PS2, what TV would you recommend, besides the usual CRT TV? (maybe older 1080p LCD TVs, 720p TVs?) My main issues with old consoles on newer TVs: blurry image, resolution stretching, input lag.
@3dmarth
@3dmarth Год назад
There's not much reason to use an old LCD TV (or any older HDTV!) for retro gaming, as they still make old consoles look terrible (all of the issues you mentioned), plus they tend to have slow response times, leading to blurry motion. HD CRTs sidestep these issues, but reportedly still add input lag. I'd think a widescreen 480i or 480p CRT would work well with PS2-era games, but I haven't gotten to try this myself. You can't go wrong with a regular 480i CRT TV, though! EDIT: You may find that 7th-gen (e.g., Xbox 360) holds up best on an older LCD. I find that TVs tend to make the picture nicer, but monitors are less likely to have lag. However, monitors from ~2004 are just bad all around! But the above issues may still apply to varying degrees.

I'm glad I came back to playing retro and retro style games. There's something to be said about having a game humble you. Just as much as it is rewarding when you finally overcome it. Honestly, I think let myself forget a little too much about how to deal with adversity, frustration and failure. Retro style video games have allowed me to practice dealing with those elements in a safe, low risk environment. And I really think it has helped manage those aspects in real life a tad better. Subconsciously, I think I allowed myself to get soft on dealing with those things over the last few years. Which in turn made me less capable of handling them when they inevitably popped up. I feel like I'm just starting to rebuild my resolve. And while it's not just retro video games, they are helping with the rebuilding process.

Honestly, most people are guilty of this, including me. Example: I wanted to get into Skyrim and looked at comparisin videos of all the systems...the PS3 version has terrible graphics by today's standards. That is never something I ever thought I would be saying about a PS3 game, but by the same token, I thought Final Fantasy 7 was the pinnacle of graphics at the time, because...it was...but it got a modern remake...BUT not every game does get a remake... So I would advise people to just keep an open mind. A lot of fun is to be had in the old games...Atari 2600 has some fantastic pick up and play titles that can be enjoyed today...so do all the other old consoles...it's all about the fun you draw from it. Like say if you go to a concert with a friend who likes a band you're not into doesn't mean you won't have a fun time anyway...and hell, maybe you discover a song or 2 that you do like! Bananas! Bread Ties! Rocket! Sega!

I think some of it is people not having/making the time for going back for retro games. I', part of a tabletop club (miniatures games, rpgs, board games). On our Discord we have a section for video games, and I honestly don't know if many of the players get through the modern games they're playing. The earliest I remember was Deep Rock Galactic and Elden Ring. Then it was Dark Tide. Followed closely by Diablo IV. Then a swift break with Boltgun. Currently, it's Balder's Gate 3 flooding the Video Games channel. And this was just the last few months. I don't think any of those games, save maybe Boltgun, are less than 40 hours to see a good portion of them. I occasionally mention what retro genre (usually shmups or beat 'em ups) I'm playing. But I'm not sure if they know what these genres are. Let alone interested. I think they are mostly too busy just keeping up with exploring the new stuff to find interest in exploring older stuff.

Here's something to talk about, how you first played a video game vs how you play it today. Like playing the SNES over RF input or playing GBA games on the original GBA and never upgrading to the SP system. That can have a lot to do with how you perceive certain games. I keep hearing how people hated the Mario Advance series and yes going back to it on the Switch is rough. Screens too tight, washed out colors, ect. But I beat all 4 of those games on the original Gameboy Advance. I busted out my old system a few days ago and played some Super Mario World. Aside from getting the right angle again and it being kind of dark, it was fine. But as a kid, that's all I had and saw no issues with it :P

Been getting back into retro games lately. Rekindled that childhood joy of gaming, and the rage I remember as a kid is nostalgic and still relevant 😂 Right now I'm set on finally beating the first NES GI Joe.

The main reasons I play modern games. 1. They go on sale for low prices 2. I can buy them digitally. 3. Delete them for ever when I beat them. This is for PS4. I have a switch, only beat 5 games on there. 1st party titles. Games are expensive on switch & the 3rd party games are just a lot better on the Playstation & they are cheaper. The retro games the switch provides? It's not worth buying the more expensive online membership for those. Just play retro games on original consoles or pc.

Speaking of Contra, I can't stand that game. The sides scrolling sections are fine, it's the from behind perspective sections where if the game reads an up input on the d-pad at all ever you die instantly. So if you're trying to move quickly from left to right, just die to walking forward into the electrified fence that exist only to kill you if you hit D-UP by accident.

Modern games are just padded out drip feed experiences. They just waste your time. Older games cut the crap and get straight into the core of the game. I blame people’s obsession with “game length=quality” for this.

Interestingly the Switch online service is how I found out about two of my new all time favorite games, Panel De Pon for the SNES and MUSHA on the Genesis. Also, you'll be delighted to hear that my 9 year old nephew loves Punch Out on the NES, which he played on the Switch online service. I think those mini consoles and streaming services are fantastic for people to get interested in retro games. And then if some old series interests you, or maybe a modern series interests you like Zelda or Fire Emblem then go back and collect the old ones.

For me I love the 5th/6th gen the most, no downloads no updates just a finished product power on and go, these days they drop an unfinished game then throw the dlc at us when they finish it. Even the 7th gen was 50/50 my ps3 has to install data but my 360 can play right off the disc. But graphically the ps5 and series x go to another level if you have a decent 4k tv.

I get more enjoyment out of retro gaming than playing most modern games. Some of it has to do with nostalgia, I'll admit, but most games today lack so much in terms of originality, it just feels like the industry is on repeat with everything out there, so I go back to my roots so I can have something different. Another thing, playing these newer, fang-dangled games, has made me a softy. For example, as a kid, I loved the Legend of Zelda on NES. I wanted to relive my childhood, so when I tried to do just that, it hit me right in that feels that this game wasn't as simple as I thought it was. There's an actual challenge there. I don't recall having to be so fine-tuned with which direction I step in just to avoid getting hit, and with so little health to start out with, you have to be. Maybe its just me, who knows. Maybe its just me getting older. Either way, I still love playing retro.

Sometimes I think retro gaming can be a misnomer for timeless gaming. But for whatever reason, prolly because we are slaves to marketing (that bit in the video was kindly understated lol), popular culture takes issue with enjoying the past. I think retro gaming as a medium of entertainment and fulfillment just lacks the history that music and moving pictures have already proven as acceptable even as it ages. Which is ironic because vgs are just the combination of those things with the addition of virtual interaction. Timelessness is the future’s acceptance of the past - it’s quality in perpetuity, and people and culture also take time to accept that “new” is a fleeting quality you can’t be sold on anymore.

You made a great point about other media being more acceptable for older titles like movies and music. Older books probably being the most acceptable older media. It's such BS. It's like the elitism in movie genres. Comedy and horror are not considered as prestigious by some critics. Occasionally someone comes along with that mentality like the French revolutionists wanting to burn everything that is old for the sake of progress.

Nah, I love my old games but they're not for everyone and that's ok! I'm glad not everyone does, they're already remarkably expensive a lot of the time. What's really important is you're enjoying your hobby, right? There's no wrong way to do that.

If somebody can't stand dying in older video games, try getting them into Mario Paint (but don't tell them about the flyswatter minigame since you can lose that one).

I grew up on PC games, I never had a SNES or Genesis (never played one of those until decades later, as well). There are true masterpieces of past and it seems to me a bad idea to play mediocre modern games or absolute masterpieces. Super Metroid I beat for the first time 2020 and it was amazing. To dismiss older games as nothing but nostalgia shows a failure to comprehend the medium.

Retro games compared to retro music and film, retro gaming requires a bit more of an investment, into specific and special hardware to play the games, but modern consoles still tend to offer some older or retro styled games. It's alot easier to just play what ever music (even on vinyl easily enough these days) or any old movies, unless you're into collecting actual film reels, which is a thing that some people, who have a lot money, like to do. But playing music or film like that, is pretty close to the original intended experience, however for video games even if a port of an old game is available, it becomes a different experience just based on the hardware it's on. So I can understand people being more generally favorable towards old music and film vs games, just due a convenience factor.

I love him gingerly putting the Saturn in the trash. He knew he wanted the joke in the video but also knew he wasn’t going to risk breaking the system. A problem with new games is all the extra steps a lot have to get started. I’m not saying going back to Metroid with no map, but why do I have to sign a 20 page agreement to play Assassin’s Creed by myself?

Personally for those who enjoy playing video games but not old games, I think to each there own and everyone has what they like and don’t like. However I’ll say that people should definitely give something that looks fun and interesting to them a try. I think that just cause something is older and came out years ago doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be played. If someone tries out that particular game and doesn’t like it cause it feels outdated, fair enough but i don’t think a game being old should deter people from trying/playing them
