Does running arguably one of the best DI boxes ever made, the Rupert Neve Designs RNDI 1-channel Active Instrument Direct Box into the mighty RME Babyface Pro FS really make a difference? Let's find out.

Please post your findings in the comment section. My take: I really love both units. It's very close. Big difference compared to most other audio interfaces, but RME is next level. Don't expect it being this close with Antelope Audio, Universal Audio, Audient, SSL. Their D.I inputs just don't feel as fresh and punchy as what I have tested here. The Ultralite MK5 however, Motu's latest device is coming very close though, with tons of gain on the instrument inputs. That is just enough on the RME's but could be a bit more. With an active DI of course, this is a non issue, so you are on the safe side there. Bottom line, show up at any session with a RNDI, and the engineer will love you!

I find the RNDI is almost like a limiter, in that I can get a super hot signal that does not clip and it adds a subtle harmonics that creates a nice clarity, awesome to be able to use it with the powered outputs of vintage tube amps and so on....

I use RNDI S trough the mic inputs of my Babyface Pro. Sounds great.

It is very hard to find a babyface pro currently in Europe. The Motu Ultralite Mk5, Focusrite Clarett+ 2Pre and the Apogee duett 3 are available options for me currently. It is very difficult for me to decide. Getting the Motu or one of the other ones plus a Di Box instead for the money. What would you recommend? My needs: Best Guitar and Voice recording quality i can get in this price range.

Interesting - since that is a German (EU) product, so should be easy within the EU. Motu was sold out in the USA for many months. Glad to hear it is back. The new Focusrite Clarett+ don't use the same chips anymore as the Clarett, that's why you can get it. It's the chip factory in Japan that burned down, that makes chip components in some these audio interfaces - that is why those who have that chip are hard to get.

Hey there. I realise this is an old video for you, but it's brand new to me (just came across it today lol). I'm brand new to DI boxes. I actually started looking into them as a means to record a dry signal from my guitar at the same time as a wet signal. But it seems (with my extremely limited knowledge) that is not the main focus of these units, if at all? I have the big brother of the Babyface Pro - a Fireface UFX III. Currently I'm using the AES output of my AxeFx II going into the AES input of the UFX, as I wanted a direct/unaffected signal from the AxeFx, just like using USB for it, but without using USB. I was looking for a way to record a dry signal at the same time. Would this RNDI allow for that scenario? I'm having a hard time finding info because I'm not sure how to even properly phrase a question. So I hope you understand what I'm trying to ask?. Either way, thanks for the video.

Yeah, DI boxes allow you to do that. Most audio interfaces have a DI "box built-in" which they label as a "high-Z" or "instrument" input. With RME, these are top notch. What's important for you is that a DI Box typically has a thru signal where teh DI gets output via the Mic Phantom Output, and the other is just passing the signal through, unaffected. I use this to send one to my guitar amp with FX and all, and the other goes into my audio interface, dry. So - XLR to computer and THRU to guitar board or amp (and from there back to computer) in my case. Then I have an effected and dry signal recording simultaneously.

@@massivebeatzz excellent! Thank you so much for responding and giving me some guidance! I think this is probably the setup then that I need. I know the AxeFx has two individual outputs on the unit, but you have to do some weird routing on the AxeFx itself (creating an fx send block on your created guitar patch), and it seems like a hassle (to me at least). Whereas the DI box seems easier and has the added benefit of some other functions. I could be wrong, but that's how I'm interpreting what you and others have said. Again, thanks for the reply!

Maybe you should have split the signal before going though the Thru bypass of the RNDI, no? I'm wondering if in instrument mode, the signal is still processed within the unit (for impedance purpose)?

I don't think so - being the definition of True bypass means it is not affected. But if anyone else wants to chime in on this - please correct me :)

Anything from Antelope is just pure madness to get anything to work around with. I suffered with that company for 2 years straight and nothing was fixed. I am finally with RME and couldn't be more happier.

RNDI sounded like it had more body and warmth.

There is no meaningful or perceptible difference in sound. Differences are apparent when you drive the Neve harder since it imparts colouration.

yeap - while YT washes out some differences due to the compression algo - you are correct, and that's really a good thin, and an endorsement for the RME.
