without a sporran, i feel a kilt can be misjudged as a skirt more easily.

Yeah, I agree. When I got my first kilt the three things I got were sporran and belt with it If I didn't I felt it would look like a skirt.

I agree. When I wear a kilt at home I sometimes don't wear a sporran. However, when I wear one in public, whether it be a utility kilt or not, I'll always wear a sporran

Just get a pair of Kilt Hose, it'll be fine.

If you’re going to wear a jacket and/or vest you could potentially get away with no sporran but it just finishes the look so well

Never forget that if the sporran is in the way >temporarily< you can just rotate it out of the way.

I have been a daily kilt wearer for 6 years now and I always wear a sporran always. Even when I wear a utili-kilt I have one but I really don't wear those as I prefer the traditional kilts. I have a main sporran I wear daily that my brother made for me and a couple others for dressing up.

I use molle magazine dump pouches for sporran replacement often. They are inexpensive and work great. Come in colors too.

Interesting video and good question! I will add 2 things from my own personal experience: 1) If you're going out, like for a walk or going somewhere where you'll be spending most of the time outside, *and* you wear something like an overcoat, inverness cape, etc any large jacket that buttons over the area where you'd have your sporran: you're better off without it. I walk my dogs in my kilt and when its particularly cold or raining, I'll wear a large overcoat that fits close my body, and so having a bulky sporran underneath not only disrupts the silhouette, but also messes with the fabric, and is uncomfortable, in the few times I've worn one because I needed my sporran, I had it sometimes "leak" out, and basically keep my coat jacket opened by maintaing a large gap via the sporran pushing through between button holes and trying to 'escape' so to speak, and so I always try to avoid it 2) If you are going anywhere with strong winds, I STRONGLY recommend it. In so many cases of, again, walking my dogs, my sporran was the difference between being a kilted dog walker, and a dirty old guy flashing other walkers marylin monroe-style haha. There's definitely a nice wieght balance to sporrans, where they're light enough to not be noticeable, but certainly heavy enough to keep the apron where it needs to be regardless of weather. I've also seen people talk about using "foraging bags" to great success as a way to maintain the 'side pocket' feel people get used to with trousers, most of the ones I've seen are basically small to medium size canvas pouches usually suspended on the side(s) of the waist, often attached to a kilt belt, and from what I heard they're great! Hope this serves some use to somebody, new or experienced kilter alike, take care everyone and thanks for the upload

Well, I also own a couple different leather belt bags, more like the type you'd wear if you went to a festival, but I don't care how it looks when I wear it, but when I'm trying to be casual, sometimes the sporran, no matter how simple it looks, can still look more than casual to me. It definitely does help to cover those "unsightly bulges", but I do prefer something less "fancy" shall we say when I want to be causal in my kilt. It's also the reason I've bought a few hybrid/utility kilts to date. They hold all my crap without fail and don't look too bad.

I have rectangular black leather pouches that mount direct onto a belt, mainly for carrying phone, coins and keys whilst wearing trews so that the pockets are not ruined. You can get similar faux medieval type of puches but kilted I wear a sporran because, well I'm a Jock and a traditionalist.

I have old molle pouches that I do the same with occasionally when wearing something like a chain instead of a sporran. it's not a bad look on a kilt, especially if you don't want a heavy sporran bouncing if you have to hustle somewhere. Pouches on the sides are a bit less in the way than between my legs...

Athletes at Highland games will not normally wear sporrans while competing as they tend to get in the way.

Exactly what I was going to say. That's a situation where a violently flopping sporran might damage your "stuff." 😳😂

I saw the Irish group Celtic Thunder, wearing all black kilt, black vest, black jacket, black hose, black shoes, white oxford shirt. Very striking! But much later, watched video, no sporran. See, didn't matter . But, if they wore a sporran and kilt pin (chef's kiss): excellent!!!! 😀

When I wear one of my utilikilts, since I have the two pockets, I do not wear a sporran. Wearing a kilt, I wear a sporran but depending on the situation, I might wear my hunting sporran or my Rob Roy sporran. I also have a nice belt pouch which on occasion I will wear on my belt, usually on my right hip (I am right handed) in addition to the sporran worn in the front. As the guys have said, a lot depends on what you are doing and whether the sporran might be in the way.

I wear a "Great kilt" and keep my chain wallet in my right fold and my keys (I have a lot of keys) in the left side fold. I also replaced the original twisted "dog leash" chain with a heavier welded link (more traditional looking) chain that does an admirable job holding down the apron.

I tuck my baccy pouch and phone into my rise, my key is on the kilt pin just like Mammy used to put it so we didn't lose it and my knife is clipped on a loop on my belt, I rarely have any pockets, maybe a chest pocket if I wear a shirt, again a rarity.

Also, for my utility kilt I actually use a tactical pouch as my sporran rather than a leather sporran. It holds a lot more and kinda seems to match more.

This subject is something I've had on my mind for quite some years actually. I work with leather as a hobby making belts, engraving, stamping, embossing etc... I think perhaps, a wide, weighted panel, made of several layers of stitched and detailed leather, would look fantastic as a sporran alternative. One could add embossing, contrast colour piping, riveting, all manner of decorative deviations actually... Even perhaps hidden pockets or storage. If the sporran serves as the kilted gentleman's version of a man-purse or satchel... then this leather panel might serve more like the kilt version of a leather wrist wallet? I even considered a couple of names for my idea. The Kilt Plinth. A kilt Pinnel... ie; a weighted 'panel' that 'pins' down the front of the kilt. This has actually really made me want to fire up the old walking-foot machine and make some.

Honestly I almost always wear my sporran, unless I'm wearing my utility kilt but that's cuz my utility kilts have pockets. So basically I wear spawned if I'm going dressed in like full dress up I want to look nice you know, but if I'm just wearing a kilt to run home Depot if it's a utility kilt and I have pockets to put my wallet in no I don't use the sporran, I'll just slip what I want in my utility kilts pockets what it really comes down to is like where are you going if it's a really dress event yes wear it if it's a casual event where you your utility kilt and just use the pockets unless you need extra cargo space. I mean at the end of the day I really view my sporran, as basically a man purse or pocket that is there for utility it's really only there for looks if you're trying to do a dress up event and look like spiffy and whatnot. But I mean the belt on mine broke like 8 months ago and that has not stopped me from wearing my kilts. Honestly I just tuck things into my kilt belt like my phone and my wallet I'll tuck that right into my kilt belt and it gets held right there in a perfect spot right in my abdomen it works beautiful but if you want that extra space like if you're with a friend or whatever and they ask you to like hold their phone or their keys the sporran is very useful. But I do have to agree it really depends on the look you're going for if you're going for like a formal dress up yes wear it if you're going for a casual I'm just wearing my kilts today while I do my everyday things don't bother with it unless you need the extra storage space. I don't see a problem with that as long as the kilt fits properly and you are comfortable wearing it and you have good leg movement that's really all the Highlanders we're going for with that dress in the first place so don't f*** with what works

Hi,Personally i think a Sporran should only be worn Formally or Semi Formally, now a days its better with a bag,you cant get that much in a sporran plus it can be a bit heavier with stuff in it.

If I'm going ultra casual with tech boots and T-shirt I substitute a traditional sporran for a ballistic nylon M.O.L.L.E pouch, suspended from a sporran strap instead of a chain. But, at any dress level at which I am wearing wingtips or brogues I always wear a sporran.
@drakus40k

I tend to wear chains on mine, if I'm not wearing a sporran. Personally, I don't think chains ever go out of style. But I'm talking more than a wallet chain - a big triple chain that I hang from my kilt belt. So it serves some of the same purposes as far as covering unsightly bulges and weighing down the front of the kilt. Mind, I do this when I have a jean or leather jacket on, so I don't have to worry about pockets...

I do agree that a sporran "completes the look" as per tradition. But it is also an example of "box thinking" you argue against in other videos, where tentative customers ask you "What will other people think of me??"
