**UPDATE 4-25-2019** I wanted to be transparent about what happened to my 2015 Forester XT. Take what I say with a grain of salt. Back in February 2019 I was on a snow camping trip and drove my Subaru through some pretty deep and hard packed snow. I was able to power myself off of this sticky snow when I got stuck, but in doing so, I must have stressed out the CVT. *IT FAILED* and needed to be replaced. It made it to 60K. In this video, I show you some reasons why the 2014-2018 FXT’s might now be for you. I need to add something to this list. *make sure you monitor your transmission temperature* and make sure you don’t over stress this vehicle. Change out your CVT and differential fluids sooner than what is recommended. Know that Rough driving will substantially decrease the life of your CVT. I hope you FXT’, Ascents and new 2020 Outback XT’s will last as long as possible. *Original Pinned Message* Please note, *THIS IS NOT A COMPARISON VIDEO. It's more of a BUYERS GUIDE FOR PEOPLE CONSIDERING BUYING A 2018 or USED SJ FORESTER XT (TURBO).* *Updating info from comments & personal findings here:* -USDM 2014-2018 Forester 2.5's come with paddle shifters if you buy the "Black Edition" - according to @chicken222 -I took my 2015 Forester XT in for an oil change at the dealership, I brought up that I saw some seepage coming from the transmission which some people have issues with according to TSB# 16-103-16. While this issue won't instantly leave you stranded on the side of the road, if left unchecked, it eventually will. The transmission is covered under warranty for 10 years. While my Subaru is being worked on, I was issued a loaner vehicle at no charge for as long as it takes this dealer to correct the issues. I'm totally fine with this just as long as I'm not left car-less. -0-60mph tests, 2014-2018 FXT v.s 2.5 - I pulled off one 0-60mph pull in my 2015 FXT @ around 6.2seconds that showed in the video, the 0-60mph run on the 2.5 was a very very long 9.2seconds I had a chance to do another 0-60 run in the 2.5. I did a little better at 9.1seconds. In my video I said that the turbo is faster 0-60 by 2 seconds, but in my real world testing it's looking more like 3 seconds, which is pretty substantial. By the way, I'm located in LA county california and elevation is close to sea level. -I updated the title of this video from "Do you NEED a TURBO Forester? Buy one now" to "Do you NEED a TURBO Forester for adventuring". I enjoy my turbo Forester, but I recommend you give it some extra protection (skid plates). Mr. P F mentioned below, "... Mud is truly the devil". "If you must play in the mud, clean the drive train soon after by power washing". I will also add, power wash that radiator too!!! Mud is notorious for leading to overheating in Turbo's. A vehicle's radiator is typically behind the front bumper ***BE CAREFUL TO NOT POWERWASH YOUR ENGINE BAY*** or do it from a far distance. It's best to just use a garden hose on the engine bay.

I cringe when I see or hear “Tran cooler should be the first upgrade”. A Scangauge II should be the first upgrade. Even with a trans cooler, a transmission can still overheat. So please, be like @goadvtr.trek and buy a scangauge II before a cooler. instagram.com/tv/CLkNDCHg5Jp/?igshid=2654k7vw3l12

You many not need it for adventures but you definitely need it to pass the 90 year old grandma doing 15 miles an hour below the speed limit. With that said. I love my XT

I enjoy my 2015 XT Premium, my partner has the 2.5. It's been a nice difference from my Toyota's and VW's, where-in it doesn't need repair always(VW) or isn't boring as a home appliance(Toyota). The engine seems highly susceptible to heat-soak. Once the oil is above 208F, the turbo just appears to give up(mild exaggeration), which I suppose is a fine trade-off to engine damage. I also absolutely hate the "sport" suspension. This is shown as an off-road vehicle, with gut n' teeth smashing firm suspension, so off-roading is done at VERY low speeds. This is a highway cruiser, rather than city vehicle. I get 13mpg daily, driving my 1 mile to work. The engine hasn't time to heat at that point, thus poor mileage. On the freeway, I get 30's if I stay under 70mph, and 26 normally at 80mph. Not bad for a flat front, awd, 250hp box on wheels. Having driven, the CrossTrek, Forester 2.5, and Outback 2.5, I have no idea why anyone buys Outbacks. They're ponderously slow, gigantic, and sloppy. A Forest 2.5 makes an outback look like a corolla, and it's only 2k more than a Crosstrek...obvious choice - Forester. I suspect, due to the new Ascent's turbo 2.4, that'll be why the Foresters no longer get a turbo...as the Forester would have been the clear winner, value for money, and faster. Oh well, I'm getting used to a future of less good, year after year, but will look forward to my car holding value as a WRX Wagon the US never got. Thanks for the videos.

Joe S. I agree ☝️!!!!! Damn heaksoak is real!!!! I guess moving it from behind the engine in the EJ engines to the front bumper 😒 in the FA models didn’t really help much. My buddy tuned up my FXT and replaced a spark plug that was causing knock events, my Subaru is running better, but after a long drive and several WOT pulls, heat soak does set in.

Out back. Simply comfortable hate the shake of the forester and more space. Yes is slow but is more capable!!
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 6 лет назад
BsOnK1969 the Forester is more nimble, but that shake you speak of is because of the narrower track. The Outback isn’t as nimble, but you can sure put one into turn at high speeds and get it sideways, it’s a whole lot of fun. I’ve driven all the newer model Subaru’s except for the BRZ and Crosstrek. The Outback used to have the XT badge, and Rumors are the Outback will regain it when the ALL NEW model is released. It’s rumored it will get the new FA24DIT that’s in the new Ascent. I wouldn’t mind switching to an Outback, but I can tell you, the Forester actually matches the outbacks cargo room and fits taller people better. 4 of me will fit in a Forester, but 4 of me would not fit in an Outback.

If you're going to be doing anything with a CVT Forester besides just daily driving, GET A TRANSMISSION COOLER. If you're really going to go nuts and try to do something like rock-crawling or anything else where there isn't going to be much airflow through the cooler, you may want to go so far as to install a fan that you can control (on/off + speed).

Subaru killing the turbo in the Forester is a death worthy of pouring out some liquor. I guess "Blue Thunder" (my 2014 Forester XT) will be sticking around for a while until it gets replaced by a new Forester in the same class.

killersushi99 !!!!! I watched your videos before I bought my Forester 😃. Thanks for stopping by to comment. You helped me make my decision to buy one. I owned a 2010 WRX, the speed and quickness “feels” like night and day. Even though in reality it’s a 2.2 sec difference. Might as well wait for the new ones in 2020. They might have that 2.4 turbo.
@tommymas1

Hey Killersushi...... watched your videos too. Same here..... was about to upgrade for 2014 XT to 2018 XT but decided that since Subaru wasn't taking those like me into account by killing the turbo (and stiffer suspensions and bigger brakes), that I don't want to give them anymore of my money. I'll keep the 2014 until I decide to change. Hopefully, Subaru will come to their senses and add the turbo in 2020. If not, will be my first and last Subie (after having American 4Wds past 25 years). Like you said, I am bummed.
@JonDZ_Adventuring

The same rumors that said the Forester turbo would be discontinued are saying that the Outback will get the 2.4 turbo in the Ascent. I prefer the Forester because it’s taller and more nimble. But I can say, from driving both vehicles, it’s more fun to throw the Outback into a turn and drift (since it has a wider track and less too heavy). Hoping for better future options!!! 🤞

As someone who had fast V8 muscle cars and v8 trucks....the extra power is sure nice but its not a requirement.....the only difference in having more power is that you get there 2 seconds quicker while using more gas.....so to me the na 2.5 is good enough to do everything and gets over 30mpg on the hwy while also being more reliable by being a more simple design.....if I wanna go fast I'll just get in my mustang GT....but when I wanna go on a roadtrip I take my 2018 SUBARU OUTBACK WITH ITS 2.5 NA and its 30mpg.....just my 2 cents.....

Thanks Vic Wiseman! I do have my regrets about this video. In retrospect, I should have spent more time talking about the advantages of the turbo. I hope any future XT owners heed my warnings though. When you beat on a Subaru Turbo, the game can easily turn into “pay to play” if you aren’t careful and if you don’t protect your ride. A Subaru “turbo” is a more complicated machine. Ive tried taking the wind fairing off, but the whistling sound was unbearable. If I load up gear in the basket, than I will still have the same problem of reduced fuel economy. Lately, I’ve been utilizing my hitch cargo basket 😃. It’s a wonderful solution.

About the '14FXT CVT solenoid filter: it's the CVT valve body holding the solenoid(s) that gets replaced - not the CVT itself, at least not for me anyway. My bone stock '14FXT CVT is fine now at 117k miles July 2018, but I did have my CVT valve body replaced by SOA (for free @ 88k miles; it would've been a $1800 job) - I think you may have read about it on the forums haha ;)

I received a nasty youtube comment from this guy named wrwind. He felt that I down played the "speed, acceleration" advantages of the 2.0 turbo FXT.... I think it's common knowledge that FXT's are faster, and I did show two video sequences of the difference 0-60. He seemed very ignorant to the fact that turbo vehicles will boost to compensate for decreased aerodynamics. *I WANTED TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO REMIND YOU ALL. A TURBO VEHICLE WILL TAKE A MUCH MORE SUBSTANTIAL HIT TO FUEL EFFICIENCY COMPARED TO A NON-TURBO VEHICLE WHEN WIND DRAG INCREASES*. Lets say we install a cargo basket to a 2015 2.5 Forester. It goes from 32 HWY mpg to 28 HWY mpg while cruising at 80mph on the freeway, a loss of 4 mpg. Now, lets take a 2015 2.0 Turbo Forester and install the same cargo basket. It goes from 28 HWY mpg to 19 HWY mpg while cruising at 80mph, a loss of a whopping 9 mpg. Not only do you lose fuel efficiency, *YOU ALSO LOSE PERFORMANCE*. So if you need a cargo basket to carry extra gear on your turbo Forester, and you're getting close to the fuel economy of a Toyota 4 runner and performance drops slower than a 4 runner.... then you should probably buy the 4 runner eh? What's the solution? Install a rear hitch receiver and Buy a hitch carrier. Your Wallet will thank you! Listen to "Vu D's" comment down below, cargo baskets are terrible for your turbo Subaru.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 6 лет назад
r ruiter if you watched my other videos, in all about straight up, no bull crap testing. I don’t candy coat things. If you drive like other Californians and cruise at 80mph you can lose up to 9mpg because of turbo boost. It’s imperative you stay out of boost to have decent MPG numbers. Of course there’s different types of baskets out there, some more aerodynamic that others. So what do you drive? What numbers do you get with a cargo basket.
@TobyCostaRica
@TobyCostaRica 6 лет назад
Makes sense that drag keeps you in boost. But dammit those cargo baskets look so much cooler than a hitch carrier 🤔
@JonDZ_Adventuring

A cargo basket was the first thing I bought for my Forester XT, I even made this cool Star Wars vinyl sticker montage on the wind fairing. I just couldn't take the MPG and performance drop. I may try one of those front runner racks, but they're a cool $1,000. Maybe I'll get something made custom i dunno.

The thing about turbo is that it makes altitude trails way easier right?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 лет назад
Dreamy kinda. From my experience, there’s considerable turbo lag. Even with a 2.0 turbo that starts boosting at 2k RPM’s. Bigger engines react faster, and that’s why the 3.6 Pentastar engine for the JL Jeeps is still preferred over their new 2.0 turbo mild hybrid. Especially in off-road situations. The future will be performance hybrids, they won’t care about altitude at all!!! They are rumored to be rolled out with the new Toyota truck lineup.

Added complexity, poor fuel economy every time you actually utilize it, requires premium gas only (that's a deal killer in Canadia)... what's not to like? For the Forester, I don't think losing the turbo is a big deal, and I guess the 95% of people that bought the non-turbo versions agree.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 лет назад
Peter Jowett world wide its 10%. And the 50-75 thousand people isn’t a very small group. This isn’t the first time Subaru has made a similar decision. Not too long ago they discontinued the WRX and STI hatch with close to 50% of them being hatchbacks. Not to worry Subaru fans! The new Outback will have the FA24DIT option. Will run on 87 and still produce 266hp and 277tq. The Forsester is top heavy enough to where it can get into a power slide as confidentially, the Outback can. So, I guess, I’m fine with this decision.

Cool and informative video, thank you for the info's. I would never drive my car or truck through mud like that (Maybe slowly) as mud is truly the devil. My suggestion for long reliable vehicle service is, if you must play in the mud, clean the drive train soon after by power washing or something. It pained me to see under your beautiful white forester. Additionally, Turbos are very sensitive and susceptible to dirt contamination more so than normal aspiration, so change air filter frequently Other than that keep up the Forester life.

P F thanks for the comment. In this video, I was trying to indirectly recommend that turbo Subaru drivers, that don’t have snorkels, stay away from mud puddles. The mud will clog the radiator, leading to overheating. Also, the placement of the turbo the FXT is right in the front bumper. A good bash from a rock will probably lead to needing a new turbo. The turbo alone is $1800, eek! I feel safer with my primitive skid plate, but until I get a bash bar, I’ll be extra careful.

No manual, no turbo... Maybe I should go buy a 2018 Subaru Forester XT Touring that I've always dreamed of. I hate how the 2017 and 2018 models have fake shifting in automatic mode, undoing the advantages of a CVT. While I am very appreciative of the paddle shifters offered in the XT, that updated programming is dumb, and obviously designed to appease the ill-informed consumer.
@JonDZ_Adventuring

Waldemar Ishibashi I’m happy with the TR690 H-CVT in the 2014-2018 Forester XT. It is a slightly different than the TR580 in the 4 Cylinder non-turbo Subaru’s. I did NOT like the Jatco CVT’s that’s found in all Nissans and everything else besides Toyota, Honda and Subaru. I know they’ve improved the response time, but that version of the CVT just feels too “slippy”. I’ve driven stick my whole life. I’ve never been happy with traditional automatics. Surprise gear shifts aren’t my thing. For example, I loathed the transmission in the current model RAV4. Power delivery felt too labored.

You can use a lesser octane fuel. But other people have claimed that it’s not worth it because you get much less horsepower and worse gas mileage. I have to mention that my CVT went out in the FXT. It was repaired under warranty and when I got it back I had to make an executive decision to trade it in. In this video, I point out that you really have to take extra care with a turbo Forester. I took that extra care, but the CVT still died 😪.

Everyone I know with a 2014-2018 Forester XT has had its CVT fail before or around the 100K mile mark. The FA20DIT isn’t prone to oil consumption problems, but the engine is also known to fail in whatever vehicle it is in. I could not recommend this vehicle. My Subaru Master tech friend says he sees Atleast 4 Subarus with turbo EJ and FA engines with blown engines at his dealership every week. There’s even an active recall on newer 2.4 turbo equipped vehicles due to a faulty CVT. Your best bet is a 4 cylinder 2.5.

ranwilder, 1.) new tires and wheels. There aren’t many All Terrain tire choices for the XT’s 18 inch wheels. Down sizing to a 17 inch wheel opens up so many choices. Optional mods would be 2.) Lift kit for more ground clearance 3.) improving approach and departure angles by modifying front and rear bumpers. Possibly cutting them or having a bumper custom fabricated. Those are the main mods that come to mind. Oh! I’m a big fan of my Xbull traction boards (3rd gen). You can use them for bridging and ramping and they’re only $89 on Amazon right now.

The turbo uses a completely different transmission, the TR690. The 2.5 uses the TR580, and I don’t know it’s details.

4U2NO my 2015 FXT is being worked on right now. I was given a loaner 2018 2.5 and man..... it’s slow (for me). Also, I miss the sport suspension in my FXT, the 2.5 feels floaty. I was surprised to find out that I get terrible MPG’s trying to drive the 2.5 fast. I averaged 18 mpg flogging the gas pedal to still end up driving slow. My FXT will move much faster and still pull 21 mpg going around the city. For those that drive spirited. Take it from us two. Get the FXT or you will regret it!

do u know anything about the new forester sport? Reliability ? cvt transmission...
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 лет назад
The 2.5L non turbo Subaru’s have better reliability. I’m no longer expert, but I THINK it’s because of two reasons. 1.) the less powerful engine doesn’t stress out the CVT as much. 2.) the Normally aspirated 4 cylinders get the 2nd generation TR580 CVT where as the turbos and H6 get the old first generation TR690 that’s retrofitted for higher torque applications. It appears the 2nd generation CVT found in the less powerful Subaru’s simply last longer. Of the people I’ve met in person (not counting social media), I know 1 guy that has had his Forester 2.5 go out. But, I’ve personally met 5 people (almost a 100% failure rate. The ones that haven’t failed yet are 2017-2018 models) with failed CVT’s in their FXT’s. My friends and I think we can get more life out of the turbo CVT Subaru’s. Now to answer your question. I think you should be able to see 250k miles out of the 2019 Forester sport if you take care of it.

john fredy the 2019 RAV4 was really hyped up. It’s reliable, but it turns out that so-called fancy AWD just.... for a lack of a better word... “Sucks”! It’s still a heavily FWD AWD system. The 2019 Forester seems to have a better awd system, but... the 2019 RAV4 does have a better transmission and Because of that, id say the RAV4 wins overall. Give the RAV4 bigger tires and a lift, and it’s really the winner. But... here’s the crazy thing. 19 RAV4’s aren’t worth it. A RAV4 adventure is $35.5. For just a little more, you can buy the vehicle I drive now, a 2019 Honda Passport AWD. Mine full leather, tripple climate zone, apple car play, twin clutch rear differential, 3.5L V6 with VTEC, is easily worth $10k more than a new RAV4. I just can’t fathom that my Passport EX-L is just $2500 more than a RAV4 Adventure 🤯🤯🤯.

J Rod nice! If you do get one, just be prepared to possibly deal with the two technical service bulletins regarding the transmission. Other than that, the Forester FXT is a fantastic vehicle. It’s fuel efficient enough (for me) to travel long distances, so I could then explore off pavement. It’s a true adventure mobile!
@kartboarder22g17
@kartboarder22g17 5 лет назад
Here's the thing yes its faster, and more powerful, but you don't get as good mpg, you have to use premium, more under the hood to go wrong, especially the moving part Turbo. The Turbo compresses the air entering the cylinder chamber, as the rings wear you get more blow by of fuel. But fun comes at a priece right?

I kinda have to disagree with the paddle shifter thing as the 2.5 NA have low on transmission selector, so that will keep you in a lower ratio longer, which would be very similar to holding your car in gear 1 or gear 2 on your XT.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 лет назад
You said it yourself, it will hold it in a low gear range (multiple low gears). This means you truly can’t lock in a gear ratio and do a sustained long sand dune climb like the one referenced in my video.
@kartboarder22g17
@kartboarder22g17 5 лет назад
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Well its going to hold it in that ratio anyway, as its gonna hold it in the lowest gear ratio that the engine can handle. So, if it is climbing a hill it doesn't automatically keep climbing the ratio, it will hold in whatever ratio is necessary as it climbs.

@2008tmp 5 лет назад
@@kartboarder22g17 Not the same. I would have been stuck many times this year in very deep snow if I wasn't able to put the car into manual mode + paddle shift when I needed to stay in a set gear. X-mode is ok for ice hill ascent/descent but is terrible in deep snow on the 2018's.

In this video, I go over things to consider, and problems to look out for in the 2014-2018 Forester XT's, especially if those potential buyers plan to offroad them. I bought mine from CarMax with 10k miles and a 10 year, 150k extended warranty. The warranty is badass, I previously used it to put a short and long block into my 2010 WRX when I had it. I paid $27k for my FXT, and my extended warranty was another $1.5k. CarMax won’t be the cheapest, but their warranty is awesomesauce!
