As a Subaru driver, there are some things cars should not be able to do that I've managed to put my Subaru through, and the fact that the car remains running so beautifully after everything, is why I fell in love with Subaru.

I'm noticing a pattern here with stock 90s subarus thrashing everyone at offroad sports

A long time ago I was with a friend in his Toyota pickup with thousands of dollars invested in it, suspesion, the big tires, etc, he was so proud and then we went to the mud and he instantly got stuck and was making up excuses about how difficult it would be for anything to get through etc., then along comes a coworker of ours in this piece of junk stock Geo Tracker and he went through the same spot with zero problems. It was hysterical to see the faces of all the big 4x4 owners that got stuck after this Geo strolled right through lol

Love my 14-year-old Legacy Outback. Once turned up to an outdoor event where car parking was the other side of a waterlogged field. Was allowed through because of the "4WD" logo. Past the stranded BMW whose driver "was sure he could make it", no trouble at all to prime parking spot. No problems leaving, either.

I mean, Subaru does makes a car that says “world rally cross”

This reminds me of passing through a snow storm that dumped about 20 inches in WNC a few years ago. I returned from a trip, drove my Forester from the CLT airport (minimal snow) into WNC, snow was deeper & deeper along the way. I saw all kinds of 4WDs & once in the rural areas even some tractors stranded along the side of the roads. At one point a man on a tractor trying to clear out his stretch of road asked if I thought I could make it home, still had about 10 miles… LOL, I responded, pretty sure I got this… and made it just fine. Folks outside just scratching their heads watching my drive by at a snails pace. Getting ready to buy my 3rd. Had an outback, then forester… prefer the Forester. Love the x mode for steep mountain decents as well.

After watching two videos of the Subaru beating all other 4wds... I without a doubt think that the Subaru is a great starter vehicle

Subaru is an incredible vehicle. I owned one for 16 years. Traded it in for a new Outback 2018.

keep in mind when reading this comment, i am no expert on this topic. however, i have some pretty basic knowledge. the first two guys woh tried to cross the mud pit ran straight in there at high speeds, meaning that when they get into the mud, the wheels will be spinning so fast that they lost traction and instead of driving forward, they will just dig a hole in the ground that will get the vehicle stuck. they then proceeded to step on the gas pretty hard when they got stuck, which just made the problem worse. the subaru on the other hand went in nice and slow, meaning that the wheels were able to keep traction on the mud, and continue to drive the vehicle forward instead of just digging a hole.

Gonna say a lot of what would've helped it is not having the diff hanging down so low to get caught on that big middle section in the mud. Still, keen to take one of these out when I get the chance.

I was never a Subaru guy until my company offered one up so I got it to see what all the fuss was about. After the 1st snow storm I understood why. I am now a Subaru man for life. They got this 4 wheel drive thing figured out....

Not that surprised really. I drive a junkyard legacy and that thing rips through everything. One of the best cars I've owned.

Locking differential makes a big difference. And the tires on the Subaru were knobier than the rest. That helps a lot as well.

Makes me proud to drive a subie! It might be a brand new legacy that will never see this type of action but it’s nice to know she’ll be able to handle the worst of conditions come winter time

Has no one heard of lockers or limited slip? Like wtf? It’s not 4wd when 2 tires don’t move smh. A full time 4wd with locked diffs would perform just as good as the Subaru or better.

Grip, weight, speed, momentum, timing, acceleration, resistance, height, angle, gear shifts, just one will make a difference

The so called 4x4's need front and rear diff lockers not some fancy traction control. Without front and rear diff locks they are basically 2wd. Subaru did very well. Surprising with open diffs ....the center differential viscous coupling obviously works well for transfering the power plus the lightweight unibody helps stay above the surface. Think it's also valid to point out how aggressive the tires are on the Subaru...they look more aggressive and gear towards mud than the 4x4

I was accused of walking a trail to mark it for a convoy of 4x4 and 6x6. Finding an impression of my Michelins proved i drove my '79 DL5 2x4 wagon along the route.

It looked like a couple of the dudes stuck didn’t have locking diffs, at least not in the front. That may have helped. I have had my Subaru for a few years and never had it stuck and I’ve had my Jeep yj for about a year and honestly when it comes to snow and slick conditions the Subaru always wins. But the Jeep has been a beast in its own right. When storm season comes around I can pull fallen trees out of the road or if I’m in a rush drive over them. Respect is certainly due for either vehicle AWD &4WD are both sick. Wish the community’s vibed a little better. Same for those dudes that think a car that isn’t American isn’t a 4x4. That’s just silly.

In a somewhat related topic, I live in a snowy area and see FAR more big tough 4 wheel drive trucks with big tough off road tires and equipment getting stuck and sliding into ditches than little Subaru’s with regular old all season tires. And in my area Subaru is very popular

The 'off roaders' are hopeless because there's no diff lock. They just spin the wheels with the least grip. I guess the Subaru has some sort of limited slip diff. If you buy a toy, don't expect it to work like a proper 4x4

If I could get a Subaru with low range and a manual transmission like they used to build in the 80's I might consider owning one.

Fair comments on here about having the right set up, but all these Muppets saw everyone getting stuck in the mud and ruts, and DIDNT THINK about not driving into the ruts Dont drive thought ruts, there is plenty of room there on the sides, 1 wheel on the side, 1 wheel on the centre

Tires. Subaru had aggressive MT's (Mud Terrains) while the others (from what I can tell) had at most AT's (All Terrain) tires. HUGE difference when in deep mud. Also, some of the trucks appear to only be in 2WD. Not knocking the Subaru, that was impressive--just stating the differences that made the difference.

My opinion is the Subaru has a thinner wheelbase, it sat higher on the tracks and didn't drag its belly.

Is it just me or did the Subaru have much better tires than the ones that got stuck? Also, it appeared that none of the ones that got stuck were fully locked, which would be my definition of a "real 4x4". That being said, Subaru's are obviously very capable and show what can be done with a limited setup when it's engineered right. Another often overlooked benefit of Subies is that they generally have a higher power to weight ratio, meaning they don't sink as easily. Best advice on the thread: Know your vehicle and your limits. Looks like everyone had a lot of fun out there! :-D

My 90’s Nissan Pathfinder has locking diffs... and it was $300... These guys really shouldn’t have had this much of a problem if they knew how to lock their diffs

Haters gonna hate but subarus will always be the best all wheel drive. Best cars best suvs hands down. No better handling stock automobile.

Going off road is never about how big your tires are or how powerful your engine is how sticky your tires are, or how tall your lift is, or how many fog lights or snorkels you add, all you need is a decent platform, confidence, and competence.

seems like the gear boxes on the real 4wds gets stuck in the central mud stretch, since they are hanging down in a half circle. Subaru has a very slick rear gear box and its very high off the ground towards the body of the vehicle.

Need to do one with a VW bus. I was out at Little Egypt in Utah a few years back in my Wrangler. Heavy rain and constant use made the ruts in the trail that swallowed my 32's. As I round a corner close to the trailhead, I see this 70's(?) VW bus just reach the trailhead. This is not the first time I've been on washed out trails and seen old VW busses.

Subaru is obviously the "King of the Mud". Its not about the size of the car its all about the intelligence. The Lion may be the "King of the Jungle" but when it comes to running swiftly, the hare/rabbit will outrun him. Kudos Subaru team!

I have a 2018 Outback 3.6R Touring that I absolutely love ❤️ I dont do any extreme off roading like this , but I’ve been through some pretty deep snow and black ice roads here in northern Michigan and this thing just goes through it effortlessly ( stock Bridgestone Dueler AS street tires from the factory) I even did some pretty gnarly two track / logging roads where I deer hunt and came home with a nice eight point buck on the roof this year … got a lot of thumbs up 👍 driving home with the buck on the roof of the Subie 😎

I'm going to jump in here with my perspective on this. First my background, I did many years of hard core 4wheeling back in the day with a 1977 Fj40. Now I explore easy trails in my old age with a lifted 2009 Ford Escape. What we have here is that the first two vehicles have solid rear axles, which are the lowest point in those two. When they went into the mud hole the real axle and differential dug into the hump between the two wheel ruts. Getting them stuck as they dont have the traction to drag that rear differential and axle through that hump basically anchoring them. Now, that Subaru has Independent front and rear suspension so the rear is just as high as the front down the center. So it has more ground clearance down the center not hanging up on that center hump, plus those two that got towed out before it as they where being towed and "plowing" that center hump lower making it even easier for the Subaru. I know full well my escape is no where near as capable as my old fj40 but i have gone where many jeeps owners can not because of experience. In this case its just that the two went before him and cleared that hump out of the way, if he had gone first it would have been the same result as them. Stuck.

Man, I cant wait to get my 2004 suby forester XT back on the road and into stuff like this. 2" lift, AT tyres, 1.5 way rear LSD, 20kg Sti rally centre diff, Sti helical front diff and 200kw at the wheels! Shown up so many 'proper' 4wd's over the years it's not funny, and that was all before the good diffs went in. Stock they go so well......

that subaru is way lighter, while its tires match those of the bigger 4wds. It doesn't sink like a ship in the mud.

Impressed with the forester, but with the others, it looks like bad driving, not bad equipment.

Patrol is one of the bests 4x4 cars, we like to build a super offroad things based on that car here in russia (you can check channels like "Academeg" or "OffroadSPB" on youtube to see some russian offroad custom cars.) However i see some problems on this patrol: 1. It has a pretty bad driver who just cant drive it as it should. 2. WTF he doest use a differential lock? 3. It has very bad tires even compared to Subaru . And 80% success of all subarus just in theyr drivers, cos they just amazing crazy, they always like "Just hold my beer" and do a crazyest thing, love them)

I love how the other drivers gunned it, hit the water, and stalled. The Subaru driver just let his machine do it's job and celebrated his intelligently-won victory. Bravado and big tires vs confidence and a balanced wheelbase. Tell me again how these others are "superior?"

I've lived in the foothills of the Sierra Cascades for most of my life. When wheeling, only three types of vehicles make it to the high lakes sitting around 8k feet elevation: Yota's with 33" + tires, winches, and lift kits. Jeeps with 33" + tires, winches, and lift kits. Subarus......stock. They're pretty remarkable. My 79 wagon with bald tires put most stock 4x4's to shame. They just don't cease to surprise me. You think there is no way you can make it through the 3 foot tall wall of snow and the damn things just mash right through it. This is fresher powder of course. They don't do great against multiple feet of packed ice and huge rivets dug out from the 44's people use around here.

This is ultimate cringe. None of you blokes belong out there, clearly.

My question is: What is Subaru doing? Like why do they just pump out perfect hill climbers and mud waders? What do that know/do that American auto makers don't?
