I just started learning to code and I'm only on the responsive web design portion of it. In another video you pointed out that you took notes and I didn't even think to do that. I was struggling to remember certain things so I decided to take your advice and take notes. It has actually helped me to retain a bit more of what I have learned.

Logic, as a branch of mathematics, is more particularly needed than most of the other branches. However, when you program computational processes, static or dynamic graphics, or even data analytics in finance or scientific computing, then you really need to be good in math (both analytically and numerically). Love your insights! Cheers, Tiff! 🥰🤓😍

Hello Tiffany, first off I want to thank you for your personal opinion on math within software engineering. I am also an aspiring youtuber currently in high school. Personally as a competitive math student, my math skills make my understanding of complex coding problems make it easier. Personally math is most similar to salt in eggs. Not needed but not tasty without them.

Math helps w/ understanding how to solve abstract problems esp. in regards to algorithm interview problems. It shouldn't scare anyone, but it may simply lead to more time taken to solve problems vs. coming w/ a math background.

I think that's part of the beauty of being a software engineer, you have a lot of options and you can combine it with other fields and skills, but works without them as well. While they may not be fully the definition of "software engineer", but you can add it even with some biology or electronics if those are your interests, and you can try out bioinfomatics or embedded development for example. And you can search for something that suits you. I did react for like 1.5 years, and really didn't use any math that would be outside of the very basics. But I also did a small internship as an embedded dev, and there I did feel my lack of physics/electronics background holding me back a bit. So it's all about what you choose and look for :)

Its intresting I've always been good at logic but poor in math. I'd argue that simply focusing on getting better at logic can replace the need for a mathematical expertise. Reading Platonic dialogues for example where arguments are broken down into their composite parts and ruthlessly examined have greatly improved my thinking when it comes to telling the computer what to do

I‘m just a first year apprentice and a little self taught and I can just talk about things in germany, maybe it‘s similar in other countries: If you want to study in university, you will be kinda screwed up, if your bad in math. It will be much harder, than for people who are good in math. If you want to make an apprenticeship, being good in math is helpful, but not absolutely necessary. In school you don‘t have a lot of math, so it‘s kinda like explained in this video. The „way of thinking“ in programming is kinda similar to math. I used to be very, very bad in regular school math. But I still have good grades in programming lessons.

Google is beginning to read my mind. Logically, I've been doing more searches on youtube for interview-type videos, so it really stands to reason that you would be recommended. Sorry for the long message, but I just wanted to share that tidbit with you. Keep doing what you're doing! Wish me luck!

I don't even like the terms "good at math" and "bad at math", because that categorizes people. For most people, being "good at math" means you've _practiced_ math a lot. I'm a software engineer who has gone back to school part-time for higher level math, and I noticed that I'm having an easier time with calculus and other math classes than when I was younger because my day job "exercises" my logic and problem-solving skills.

As a certified mathematician & programmer I agree: not really needed outside of a couple of very specific areas. Scientific computing, graphics, finance. Probably a few more. Where does the question come from? From the confusion between software engineering & programming & computer science. Academic computer science is very math-y, but academic CS is not much concerned with programming / software engineering. And of course the fact that computers & programming started with math. The very first programming language was called FORmula TRANslation.

You are right about Fortran but even that was not for advanced math. It just allows you to plug numbers into a simple equation so the computer can do the arithmetic for you. Programing Y = A* X**2 + B*X + C after plugging in values for the variables is not the same as solving simultaneous sets of differential equations.

Everyone keeps on forgetting a wonderful programming language called Pascal. It actually started the trend of modern programming. It has been a long journey for me from there to my current state of art android programming in java and kotlin.

@@chrisaustin9949 I'm not sure what you think early computers were used for, but it was not quadratic equations. Here's a hint. What does the "I" in ENIAC stand for? The thing solved differential equations. Rocket trajectories and bomb explosions, probably.

It is more about if you "can" be good at math rather than if you are actually good at math. If you had a hard time with pre-cal even when you put in the work, then you probably don't want to get into software engineer or computer science. On the other hand if you are good at math, you will definitely good at software engineer if you put in the work. You won't be good at anything if you don't put in the work even when your IQ is off the chart.

Let me contribute to the topic. In México, Computer Science education is divided into four categories: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology and Software Engineering. The toughest (math-wise) is Computer Science, while the easiest (math-wise) is Software Engineering. It would be nice to make a video explaining the differences among those four categories, and why the math requirement change.

It depends on you work Math is basically everywhere. The hardest part is the heavily theory computer science degree, that's why software engineering degree exists now... As an example Let's say you're making Google maps, how does it know your best route ? Yeah some numbers going in... Probability statistics vectors and matrix are important, but it's not theory at work.. The good news is, at work it's an open book, no theory everything is applied. Problem solving, Google is free stack overflow and you're good to go. It's not high school and not university, you're not gonna solve derivatives and functions out of nowhere. Don't worry it's not a big deal
@super_hero2
@super_hero2 2 года назад
If you are good at problem solving, leetcode and similar stuffs, then chance is that you can be good at math if you try. If you had a hard time with pre-cal even when you put in the work, then you should not get into software engineer. The question should be if you "can" be good at math rather than if you are actually good at math. If you try super hard at something, you will definitely be competent at it but is it worth spending 3-4 times more than your average peers to be the same level as them that is a question each person has to answer themselves.

Believe it or not, when you program, you are using a branch of math that is called: "first order logic". All of these conditional statements and truth statements work using the principles of boolean algebra. Algorithms (complexity and computability) and building test units require (i.e., optimize tests by using induction and/or contradiction). Whoever says that you don't have to learn mathematics to be a software engineer/developer, is wrong. Maybe you don't have to learn the theory thoroughly, but without a sense of at least the nitty-gritty stuff, it will be a really tough uphill battle. My take on the whole "being scared of math" is just laziness. Granted, you don't need to be a "math wizard", but there are some mathematical aspects to programming that just can't be avoided.

Agreed. Definitely helps during the analysis of algorithms (for optimization purposes, for example), but it isn't required for coding. If it's not your strength, you can improve through practice, and, if working in teams, you could learn from others who are good at it. It's also a great idea to study experienced people's code (it's easier if they are good at commenting and documenting it). Nobody's perfect at everything. But, through practice, you can learn and improve. This is a never ending journey.

Yes you do need to be a maths whizz to be a software engineer, and that's why this RU-vidr is a RU-vidr instead of a real software engineer. You can learn software engineering without being a maths whizz. Great. Now implement discrete cosine transform in your programme, to compress an image. Can't do it, can you. So you have to use a function written by someone else. The person who wrote that function is a maths whizz, and a real software engineer, and doesn't need to supplement with RU-vid channel income.
